This clip is taken at a clinic in Kaitaia , New Zealand. I talk about a common mistake I see where people try to "lift their horses back " with their legs but actually cause the horse to lean on their forehand when they do it.
If at any time you want to learn how to get real collection, click on the horses back and you will be taken to our online video page. Then you would choose "The Process to Teaching Collection"
Listen to The Journey On Podcast with Warwick Schiller, a conversation about horse training and personal development and the journeys that life takes us on. Listen on:

I've heard this said before, but never put so clearly/understandably. I have had this explained during Dressage lessons. but I'm thrilled to hear that it is taught in Western Riding as well! As I have aged, Western saddles have become more and more appealing. Even more so now! Thank you, Warwick!

go to other video called, teaching collection by warwick. In this video he explains that the lady picks reins and adds legs, but the horse is still on his front legs, head down but still on front legs. In the video 'teaching collection' he explains that you need to teach correct backup first - from stading, from walk and from trot and canter, then you can add leg and combine those two things and horse will have his weight on hind legs and head lowered

I started western first, my trainer then said that westernhorses just have their weight on the forehand :-( Thank god I changed to a classical trainer and my horse is not on the forehand any more. And she is in great shape now, said the osteopath today. Thanks to classical gymnastics :-))

Your trainer must not have seen real western horses in action - no way can a horse do a spin or a sliding stop with their weight on the forehand.

Logan Darrow ... there You are right. But the rest of the time - estimated 99,5% - they carry all their massive Bulk on their tiiny forelegs. Ever wondered, why none of the great quarters are heard of anymore once they have passed the "old age" of 12 or 15?! Klaus Krzic of the Spanish riding School in Vienna was able to show Top Performances with his 30 Year old Lippizaner ...

Very good decision, Miss Schenk, I did the same. There are sidebranches of Westernriding that give reasonable consideration to collection an gymastics ... the old californian "Vaquero" - Style. But alas - i think It's dying out.

Paul Mittermayr You are right, there are far too many Western trainers/riders who fake collection with low heads but weight on the forehand. I think it is actually improving though. New AQHA rules, new classes such as Cowboy/Western (which is Vaquero) Dressage and Ranch Pleasure are helping. The head handing four beating peanut rollers have given Western such a bad image for far too long and it does cripple horses too. The AQHA is finally trying to fix it. Now judges just have to follow the new rules and penalize peanut rollers who four beat and joalk and reward correct movement even if faster...

Great explanation. The 'fake thing' is exactly how people wind up putting their horses on the forehand.

The point of collection is for them to lift their backs, drop their heads, and engage their hindquarters. In doing that, their withers should go up, and their hips should shift downwards, putting more or equal amounts of weight on the hind end and the front end. It also lengthens strides, and separates their vertebraes. That ensures less of a chance of spinal injuries.

Rider should get off the horse to do the belly lif/topline lift exercise. t. This is very good video to point out the fallacy of trying to get certain results (lifting horse's back) by using incorrect method. Am glad Mr. Schiller made this video. Pity he didn't go on to show rider how to correctly lift her horse's back the way veterinarians recommend.

Paul you`re so right with your comments. I had to laugh - mutant quarterhorses :-)) About two years ago there was a western trainer at my stable, he just started a little palomino stallion that looked like a foal - it was only 19 month old. He pulled his head to it`s chest, stabbed him with his spurs and practiced spinns!! Some mothers of the english lesson girls got angry and yelled at him to stop. I was told by his girlfriend it was common practice to start a horse at that age for something called "Derby"!? Now the guy wasn`t that heavy, but if I look at videos of some famous western reining stars for instance S.....F..... he is quite heavy, I mean fat. So to imagine his weight on a tiny two year old, who is 99,5 % of the time on the forehand!? I also get kind of sick watching the pleasure horses, no cadence (they look like they`re limping about), on the forehand and extremely crooked, their hind end seeming to want to pass the front, or maybe they are going Traver (what do I know) :-)) Only very very few seem to NOT be crooked!

I'm glad about Your comment too! Most of the time all i read is written by blind followers. Yes i heard about that too, these derbies and futurities, where they show fast spins and full gallop stops with these babies ... to me it is heartbreaking and i find it morally reprehensible. To watch "Pleasure" is like a pain in the ass to me. I wonder what may be the pleasure in riding horses that drag their feet, hang their heads so low that they touch the sand with their muzzles, "gallop" in a four beat, show absolute lack of life, action and passion... if my horses would act like this i would call the vet in emergency. Even in times of a Natural-Horsemanship-Boom, the horse industries still produces these abominations. But there are some good ones, look at Warwick Schiller or Buck Brannaman, or the aforementioned, among many others. The only thing one can do is focus on the good guys and boycott the rest. And stay critical and try to do the right thing ... Wish You the best, greetings, Paul

Paul Mittermayr I agree with both of you, however... as I've been classically trained, I have to say that some of the best reining horses and trainers can rival a classical horse and rider. There is true poetry in every discipline where the rider/trainer has a seat and hands that listen and feel. I've been on "reiners" and I've ridden real reiners. The best have spent years learning and perfecting (both horse and trainer). The problem with most North American disciplines is that people view the horse as a throw away item and forget that they themselves could never be an athlete without years of conditioning... But then again, we treat our own athletes the same - asking them to peak before the body is thoroughly conditioned. I have to say that Warwick Schiller is one of a few that has a classical seat and I'm quite sure that his horses don't get short cuts by the way that he rides.

Learned to collect this way in western and then I switched to English. Luckily, I’ve been learning the proper way to collect by tucking the hind-end and a using some rein!

I knew I wanted the back to lift up, so legs could get further under the belly for better reach and smoother ride. How was the question. I do see that any actions that puts more of the weight on the forelegs is counter productive.

@kenzieshelley4172
@kenzieshelley4172 8 жыл бұрын
Some people back their horses I usually just go with transitions and work on lightness. I'm a dressage rider, but I do have experience in western pleasure as well, in both I would go with transitions and if your horse becomes heavy think as if you were trying to sit on your hind end and really tuck your bum. Also on the ground to build the muscle to do so take a hoof pick and lightly rub the metal part in the middle of your horse's girth area underneath and he should lift his back. You can also do the same on the hind end and drag it down their croup. Tail pulls can help as well.

Very nice explanation. Thank you. But now I'm wondering how I could imporva that? My guess is, it has to do with training the horse to go backwards and to stop properly first and then using this while aking to move forward. is that right?

Stopping a horse, and backing a horse up has nothing to do with engaging its back actually. You actually have to make it go forward. Starting at the walk, and in a snaffle, carry your hands and shift them forward, pulling at the corners of the mouth, not the bars of the mouth. While doing this push the horse forward, instead of just walking so lazily. Doing this for a less than a week taught my horse to put its head down in all three gaits. Watch Palma video and Arttoride for more.

I'm confused by something - why would you want to lift the horse's back?
@amongotherthings17
@amongotherthings17 9 жыл бұрын
the horses spine is like a bridge, if its hollow and dropped then they aren't using their muscle, the spine and ligaments are carrying you., it can cause a lot of pain and damage with our weight added. But if it's rounded and lifted properly the horse is carrying you with their muscles. Soft tissue can deal with shock a lot better that hard tissues. And the reason for them to rock back onto the haunches is because the hind legs are similar to springs where the fore limbs are more like posts and it goes back to shock absorption. Hope that helps
@GoldenLioness100
@GoldenLioness100 9 жыл бұрын
It does help - I'm just used to this being described as making the horse lift themselves through their stomach as it supports the back in the same way but brings their haunches under them at the same time.
@amongotherthings17
@amongotherthings17 9 жыл бұрын
GoldenLioness100 Biomechanically that is wrong. The abdominal muscles are there to draw the hind legs forward, not to carry the trunk in any way. The nuchal ligament and dorsal muscles are what carry. The pelvis rotates forward in proper collection (yes with the help of the abdominals but they are just pulling the legs under) and the nuchal ligament becomes taught raising the dorsal muscles allowing the horse to carry a rider much easier. If you have ever seen say some dressage horses in false collection where they are "carrying" the trunk with their abdominals they are what is called a "leg mover" meaning their back is not properly engaged and it is tense and inflexible so they are just throwing their legs forward stiffly. A horse working over it's back properly will move fluidly. Contracting one side (the abdominals on that side drawing the leg under) while the other releases (the abdominals on that side relaxing to let the leg go back) and vise versa with every stride. They should never be constantly engaged. Sorry is that confused things more. There is a lot to it.

I agree. A horse is a very heavy item and if you try to lift its back then you are in grave danger of putting your own back out in the attempt.

Mr. Schiller, i`m a fan of Yours. But this video does NOT make sense. The reining horses You talk about do have an organised, well trained body and they do hang their heads low. There we agree. But they are surely not collected, they don`t bend their hocks properly and they don`t shift their weight to their hindquarters (where it should be in a well collected and well balanced horse). If anyone wants to see this done properly, he /she has to go look for followers of old masters like De la Gueriniére, read into Podhajski or Penquitt, even watch Branderup or a few of the top - workong equitators ... this is achieved by great personal discipline and hundreds of hours of methodical, consistent training. It cannot easily be explained in a 4min. video and i daresay that none of the reiners with their deformed mutant-quarterhorses are anywhere near that goal. Good riders and sportsmen they are, but correct collection would even be contrary to what they have to show the judges in their championships. Such is the reason why i quit westernriding. Westernriding and collection are on opposite shores of the river of reason. No offense, greetings, Paul

1. The horse has no bum so this needs building up. 2. The chick is too heavy for the skinny horse. 3. Of course the horse puts its weight on its front legs because she squeezed her legs and it thinks it’s being told to go forward. From what I could see the horse’s back never rounded when she badly attempted to get it to do so. Inexperienced rider.
