Recently there has been a growing trend that deems time spent on gaming as inherintly a "waste of time". While there are many rational reasons behind why spending excessive time on gaming can lead to suffering in the end, I want to offer an alternative perspective that demonstrates that there can be invaluable benefits to competitive gaming as well, including strong carryover and confidence towards achieving other things in life, as long as you discover the correct insights during gaming.

TIMESTAMPS:
00:00 I started playing League 12 years ago
1:32 My first time playing ranked in Season 2
2:36 I started making videos about League
3:20 Season 3 (the most memorable season)
4:45 Season 4
5:05 Season 5
5:24 Season 6 (starting to improve & a mindset shift)
7:15 Season 7 (going for Diamond, confidence towards improving)
8:40 Season 8 (Falling out of a strong mindset)
9:17 Discovering my breaking point
10:22 Reflecting on how my mindset should have been different
11:45 I already had that mindset, but it wasn't engrained enough
12:13 Season 9 (forfun duos with friend)
12:22 Season 10 (going for Diamond again, mindset still wasn't perfect)
13:04 I reflected on this period in my old video
13:24 Climbing is a number game based on your skill/winrate, so don't tilt
14:05 League is not like other, cumulative skills
14:36 Season 11/12/13 (mostly forfun duos again)
14:51 I enjoyed the game but it made the rest of my day more difficult
15:20 Retiring from League (but not before one last final climb)
15:45 Wasn't satisfied with hitting diamond too easily on main acc (S2023 S1)
16:00 Climbing on my smurf account (S2023 S2)
17:03 Arriving in Japan (and shop review)
17:57 I had always wanted to try online gaming in Japan
18:10 I learned Japanese partly because I wanted to experience the Japanese internet
19:07 I made an account in the jp server in 2019
19:30 I played with premade Japanese players in voice in 2019
19:50 If I wanted, I could play League in Japan now
20:00 I livestreamed the Japanese League server, but stopped after 4 games
20:30 Is it worth playing League in Japan? (Yes, for me)
21:46 NordVPN Sponsor Segment
23:20 Starting my climb to Diamond in Japan
23:33 Getting double inted by a streamer and a troll
24:12 High winrate climb
24:26 I didn't know Riot removed tier skipping
24:55 Already had interesting experiences in the Japanese server
25:11 Hitting Emerald, and my first lose streak
25:37 Hitting Diamond
26:23 Going for Master!
26:58 I enjoyed playing with the same players
27:22 I still had negative experiences too
27:31 1 game away from Master! (and a 2 week break)
28:07 One of the worst losestreaks I've had
28:41 How toxic is the Japanese server?
29:28 Climbing back from the losestreak
30:05 I was against a RANK 5 (former RANK 1?) JP player
31:08 HITTING MASTER!
31:22 Decay games & The Vanguard Incident
32:45 JP server reaction to an earthquake
32:59 Interesting Japanese usernames
33:07 Was spending ~5000 hours on League of Legends worth it?
33:39 You can easily spend thousands of hours on games "unproductively"
33:56 Instant gratification from video games isn't usually fulfilling in the long-term
34:14 Why do I not regret playing League despite wanting to use my time impactfully?
34:28 Why I'm making this video
35:00 Learning what it means to do everything in your power to improve
35:25 Climbing in League isn't easy, it takes more than just lots of hours
36:21 Reaching difficult goals after working towards them is going to give you invaluable confidence
36:35 Even if I spent those hours on learning something else, I might not have been better off
36:49 League was a hobby of so many of my friends when I was younger
37:08 The negative experiences in League made me so much stronger
37:42 I feel genuine fulfillment over reaching my goals in League
37:55 Even the bad periods were lessons learned that I can apply in other areas of life
38:18 What even is "regret"?
39:00 Will I keep playing League?
39:39 Sometimes the things we value must be sacrificed for a greater purpose
40:10 Dangers of not allowing you to enjoy something you do anyway
41:00 If you're going to do something anyway, do it full intent, instead of half-heartedly
41:27 After fully accepting something, you can enjoy it to the extent that you ironically don't need to engage in it that often
41:44 Conclusion
42:10 Outro

Anyway, hopefully this will be an interesting video that offers an alternative perspective to the statement that competitive gaming is inherently a waste of time, as well as some insights into changing your mindset in a way that can help make the time you spend on gaming more healthy, productive, enjoyable, as well as potentially even less time consuming by increasing the quality of the time spent, instead of quantity, even if it means stopping gaming entirely for a while when other things take priority, as you can always return to it in the future.

Absolutely superb video, one of your best ones without question. As a fellow gamer of several thousand hours, I've also reflected quite a bit about my own journey. My trajectory and my conclusions were a bit different though: I hit global in CSGO with relatively little conscious effort after ~2.5k hours, through not tilting/flaming, being honest with myself (about what I did well/badly) and just thoroughly enjoying myself. On the other hand, I very consciously tried to improve at osu; I played a lot of practice maps, tried to consciously identify and fix my weaknesses and made improvement my foremost goal (instead of enjoyment). I'm still to this day stuck at the 300pp barrier. My (tentative) conclusions were that enjoyment itself (greatly) facilitates improvement and that with some skills (especially subconscious ones), it's sometimes better not to overthink it and to just let the brain do its thing. In the language learning sphere, I've heard it said many times that the people who improve the fastest are those who "just do it" i.e. those who just go into it headfirst, have fun and don't worry about all the little details (which is what I've done with CSGO and also how I learned English). On the other hand, I admit that another thing I've learned from osu was that not everybody can become anything; we all have our inherent strengths and weaknesses and if becoming very good is important to me, it's probably wise to select a skill where I have at least some baseline talent. Some things are not meant to be. Very interesting to hear other gamers' reflections about their journeys.

As another competitive gamer (fighting games), it's really cool to see someone from a different genre take a very similar path to myself and make similar takeaways. Really well put together and well thought out video, keep up the good work. Also love all the Ping Pong clips, that show really understands the competitive experience so well.

As someone that has done gaming and sports competitively (well over 5k hours in each) I can say that I appreciate your message, although I disagree with your final outcome. I find that most of the enjoyment I got wasn't the satisfaction of achieving a large goal but, in making small corrections such as form checks, or summoner's usage. Going back and being able to look at previous clips of myself and cringing at these small details while having the knowledge that I'm better at X small thing now feels better than setting a large goal that I sometimes fail to reach. To expand, I think that this ability for this small incremental improvement works better (for me atleast) than larger goals that cause me to beat myself up for not having reached. Which causes me to walk them back, diminishing most of the feeling of joy after having "cheated" or "coped" with a lesser but more realistic goal. Either way a great video on a game that I used to enjoy playing.

I think most things in life come down to having a healthy mindset, whether it's games, language learning, gym or anything else. It's very easy to have unrealistic expectations and get demotivated when they are not met, instead of actually improving. Personally, I've never been able to maintain the right mindset when playing competitive games, thus I've never really achieved anything significant (I was silver in CS:GO after 300 hours lol). At least now I can apply the lessons I've learned from that to learning Japanese, working out, and possibly my future hobbies. By the way your videos really motivate me to constantly improve myself - I've started lifting weights because of your gym progress videos. Keep up the good work!

honestly my outlook on league improved massively when i started playing when i wanted to which was mainly when gamemodes were up (especially arena) my highest rank was silver but even if i could put my mind to climb to gold or even higher i prob wouldnt enjoy it as much as learning a new skill or playing a different game so i simply stopped playing ranked also hearing mishaps that were done by people new to the game is pretty fun around when i started playing the game in a dominion match i bought 6 boots on hecarim not realising they dont stack in movement speed

Ive been pretty surprised to see how many people view competetive gaming as a waste of time. As someone whos also spent many thousands of hours dedicated to self improvement and reflection in order to improve at the current game im playing, I dont view any of it in a negative light. My personal goals I achieved and friends I made along the way vastly outweigh any downsides. Lovely video to watch thru as someone whos never played league

This is video is really helpful. Thank you Liva! I have been going through the same sort of thing. After playing world of tanks for 10 years as my main game and dedicating myself to learning japanese full time for over a year now, I am experiencing much cognitive dissonance. I want to quit playing because it’s unproductive and I don’t get satisfaction from it anymore, but at the same time I want to maintain social connections with friends I have made online. Making a decision has been really difficult as I keep deleting and redownloading the game, but I finally think I can fully focus on japanese and feel ok with that. Thanks for sharing your experiences in such a well made video!

i really really love this video. i only touched league twice but it didnt feel like it was right for me, and despite knowing little to nothing about it this video was entertaining all the way through. listening to your mindset was super interesting and it really resonated with my ideals. your journey so far is an interesting and even inspiring one in my opinion. I honestly LOVED the takeaway on how almost anything we do can be beneficial if we approach things with true commitment and care. reminded me of a lyric from a song "Everything in this world leads to soul enlightenment. There is nothing wasted about our lives." I also found the tidbit on how what constitutes wasted time isnt what we spend it on but how we spend it. The idea of sacrificing things we love for greater pursuits has honestly not been a thing ive thought of, especially since im a person who has trouble getting myself to even start doing the things i dream of doing, its something that honestly inspires me more and makes me want to do the things i want. The idea that if you are going to do something, give it all you have. I also really liked how you talked about pitfalls of such a philosophy, idealism without effort will harm you. all in all i want to say thank you, this has been of more my more favorite videos ive watched! (also this video is the reason why im gonna start to watch ping pong the animations lol)

Great video I can really relate as I have spent over 2000 hours on clash of clans (a strategie mobile game) I even managed to get rank 1 of my country in it once in the main base and several months in a row in the night base (a secondary game mode for those unfamiliar with the game) I have now stopped playing for almost 3 years and will not get back to playing for more or less the exact same reasons you don't play hardcore anymore but I do not regret a single minute spend on it!

2000h might seem like not a lot compared to the 5k livakivi has but the thing with clash of clans is its not designed to be able to be online for hours at a time You're supposed to go in every hour or so do an attack or 2 that will take maybe 10min and come back again in an hour And i have probably around +2k hours in stuff related to the game as well like watching videos about it or spending time on the discord of my clan at the time etc

god, you comparing how people flame in the euro servers versus the japanese servers just reminds me of why I'm glad I gave up on league (and most online games tbh). I started playing around the same time as you, and just got conditioned to being called slurs and other horrible things, and played through that for 3 years. I gave up and switched to hearthstone for a while, but never really got as into an online multiplayer game since (outside of playing a call of duty here and there for a few months, and rainbow six siege for half a year). I recently tried getting into counter strike 2 since I enjoyed CS source back in the day, but when my girlfriend and I started getting harassed more as we got better, I just couldn't do it anymore. Maybe it's just due to me being a woman, but I absolutely hate that getting harassed is just a part of playing online games, esp if someone on your own team gets tilted and blames you. I think the only game I didn't get harassed in was rainbow 6 siege, but I think that's because I played it in it's first year, before it really exploded in popularity. I'm happy to just chill and play balatro or another deck builder now, and experience a similar feeling of improvement and growth from those games as you did from league, Livakivi

ngl when I saw your opgg I expected a video like this Since your profile when you streamed was the first time I opened opgg after changing browsers, it got saved as top result when I type it in url bar, so I kept seeing you climb with an amazing wr overtime, when you hit masters I almost sent congrats on your discord, but decided not to, as it would feel a bit weird also 34:29 mom I'm in the video I still agree with competitive gaming being a pretty awful hobby, maybe its good when you're young and can learn with it like you said, and I definitely learned a bunch with it as well as someone who also used to be high elo (but I quit a bit before Renata launch), but it can very easily lead to addiction, and an infinite loop of frustration where losses make you mad, and win doesn't make you as happy to make up for it... Unfortunately not everyone can learn and grow from everything, and in competitive gaming, it is definitely the overwhelming minority of people who does it, so I still consider it one of the worse hobbies, but not necessarily the worst, Gacha gaming is still worse, so are things that harms others

I absolutely regret playing dota for 3.1k hours. The cost was too great.

Ironic how apparently league is now borked on Linux because they introduced cancerous anti-cheat.

The "Gaming is a waste of time" trend is probably a sub-genre of the "sigma grindset" one, where pretty much everything that doesn't earn you something tangible (money, etc.) is deemed useless. I hate it with a passion and I'm glad other think the same. In the end if you are not ignoring your family/friends/yourself because you're gaming there's no harm in it.

The „hard work grind, body building, carnivore diet, productivity pure and business” mindset is awful. In pursuit of a sense of meaning and happiness and fulfillment you doom yourself further with this shit, I wish people would stop it already 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@coconut-tea Not to get political, but I suspect it's a side-effect of our hyper-capitalistic society (especially in the west) where you constantly have to prove your "worth" by getting more money, a bigger house, a more powerful car, to have 6 packs and a 11/10 partner etc. In this mindset you're never happy with who you are, no matter how far you've come. Of course, the roots are healthy: bettering oneself should be a constant goal, but the fruits are sour.
