Just a couple weeks ago, I threw away a years worth of my shed hair; now that I’m taking better care of my hair, I was collecting it to track how much shed hair I lose each month. But I wanted to tidy up my closet, so I trashed it. But it was so hard - seeing my hair in the trash made me want to cry. It felt like I was wasting a piece of me. This video makes me happy - it has given me justification to not be so quick to throw it away in the future (and that I’m not crazy for wanting to keep my hair, lol). Thank you for this! 😊

I sometimes cut up my shed hair, and put it in the soil of my house plants. I learned my hair is high in nitrogen, and this is slowly released to the plant when it is in the soil. Hair as a top layer on the soil, can deter pests. Hair can help to give soil a sturdy matrix which may be useful for supporting roots. Plus, hair is rich in nitrogen which makes it ideal for composting and treating plants with. I just cut my shed hair up, in small pieces, then mix it with my plant soil before inserting the roots of the plant in the soil. I learned how to do this from Pinterest years ago. My house plants have lived, and done better after putting my shed hair in their soil.🪴🎍❤😊

@@bettynevels1669 oh wow!!! People think I'm the typical "I got Indian in my family" that some Black people are known for when I say that but on both sides of my family there's actually substantial Native American heritage. I specifically know about the Blackfoot because it's part of the family history on my maternal side, which is where the hair burning comes from. I'm not sure on my paternal side but the DNA testing they had done shows my family has NA heritage on that side as well. It definitely explains my hair lol. It's more wavy than curly.

You know that is interesting that when I used to go to the beauty salon and had a hair cut or a hair trim, I remember just here surrounding my chair on the floor and sometimes I was asked if I wanted to keep the hair and I was thinking now why would I want to do that? And then I'd watch The Little Helper sweep it up and throw it in the trash. So I guess hairstyle is new that some of us have feelings about hair and would not want to just leave it there would want to dispose of it in the way that we felt best

Oh my goodness. I am the same way. I have a bag of shed hair in my closet. I even keep my child's shed hair in a separate bag cuz its fascinating to me. Their hair is a completely different color than mine. I plan on making a clip or hair piece/wig with it one day. That way it will match my hair color and texture perfectly, no need to blend. That's what women did in ancient and Victorian days. They made custom wigs from their cut/shed hair.

Grew up with always burning your hair, never flushing or putting it the garbage can. Then, I got away from it over the past 10 years. Another thing was after doing your hair or someone else's, you would say, "mo hair", the old folks shortened version of "more hair." It's amazing how these traditions were passed down from our ancestors. We had very few hair products available and definitely not many to cater to our different textures, but our hair grew. 😮😊

That’s really cool to know. I have actually been saving all of my hair since since 2017 and I have my hair from my big chop back in 2014. I have it put away in little sandwiches bags dated for the year and month for which I lost that hair. So all in all I have 8 years worth of my hair put away. I started doing this so that I could visually see how much hair I was shedding from month to month. And as I am changing my hair and food regimens I can see what’s affecting me the most.

@@marianav9655 I have the hair that I lose per month in a mini sandwich bag marked with the month and year. I then put all of the bags for that year into a small/medium size cloth bag and tie it up and put them in a drawer. One thing that I have been experiencing is that over time air will fill back up into the sandwich bags. So Im going to put the bags from each year into a vacuum seal bag. That way I will be able to stack them. The draw that I currently have them in is getting full. So I will have to make this change this year. Hope that helps. And your idea about using the hair to recall moments and feelings is pretty cool. In 2022 I started taking my journaling to the next level where I tracked my daily actions and emotions throughout the day in sections (morning, noon, and night) in a custom spreadsheet. It has been an amazing experience to be able to look back on my year based on the day and time. It really helps with recall. And it only takes me a few mins a day to do it.

@@marianav9655 Im glad to hear that its something you would like to do. I have put so much work into perfecting what I am doing, Im happy to see that others like it. One more thing. I use to write all of my notes on a card and would store it with the hair, but in 2023 I made a personal hair tracker where I now document everything that I do to my hair and all of my product recipes. So if I have a wash day, I know the date and time of the wash, what products I used, if I did a full wash or just a co-wash, and what style I did to my hair. And then I add any extra notes. It has been a game changer for me. because if I do anything that changed my hair I can look back at what I did over that month that was different from the past months.

While I just wanna see how much hair I’m losing. 😂😂 end of the day I throw it in the toilet at home but these days I’ve opted for burning because I’m still African and I believe hair carries energy because my mom always tells me don’t go to to just anyone do your hair

Same. I happened to save a pile of hair from my last detangling session. Idk what I planned to do with it but now perhaps I’ll try mixing it in with my plant soil or with a smudge stick.

And although, I haven't practiced that in my adult life, this makes sense why I always felt weird about throwing away mine or my children's hair. Now this has jogged my memory, I think I will return to that practice or even bury it which seems much safer if I wanna get the kids involved

Yes I'm african american from the south east. I follow this tradition of keeping hair safe then burning with herbs and oils with certain energies. My aunt told me about it and how the family elders used to do it. I started doing it as well when i became an adult. I've only heard of enemies burying shed hair with charms to do harm although I understand your approach.

Iam so so glad that I am not the only one putting my sheds in soil garden instead of the trash. I love my hair and I want to keep them close by.

I would put my shredded hair inside of a candle as an offering to my loved ones. I didn't think about using it for gardening. Thank you for this tip!❤❤❤❤ Also, I found out that they can turn our hair into diamonds.

This was a very fantastic video to watch, and some interesting comments to read. I'm so happy to see i have fewer shedded hair, as I am moisturizing my hair more often. But to save my hair?? Too spooky for me. I have no use for it, anyways.

Many years ago, my 80 year old aunt would always burn her hair that was left over from her brush or comb. I can now understand why

What if you can't bury it because of the apartment complex doesn't have grass? Then what do you do? Everyone and y'all's family have a blessed New Year and a blessed day. Y'all always stay blessed and healthy ✝️🙏🛐🕊️

Happy new year! All of this is very interesting especially the first comment I read. I can't keep a plant alive so maybe I should try this. Currently, and don't laugh, I took my shed hair into an empty toilet paper roll and fold it over at each end and then put it in a grocery store bag and then tie that and put it in the trash. Is that a bad idea?😥
