Can’t you just wash & go? Why resort to damaging your hair
@youngrightnow20492 жыл бұрын
@@PiinkPerfectionM8 Well wash and go’s are not a viable option for every natural, and definitely not for every natural mother. I also like to keep my natural hair in mini braids or mini twist (if I find time to do it myself) that I can wear under a wig when I am feeling very low maintenance and need to focus on my immediate goals and take swift action. When I don’t even feel like wearing a wig but have extra time at the moment, I will definitely blow dry or straighten my hair. Of course, not every natural can do this either and it might be VERY damaging for some naturals and only a little damaging for others.

I’ve been doing twist outs ever since I’ve been natural because they’re a good, easy stretching method and style. But lately, I’ve been letting my hair be frizzier and more undefined because that’s it’s true natural state. It took me a while to accept that, and it’s still taking my family time to accept it, but I don’t want to always have to manipulate my hair, or do anything at all to it for it to be seen as acceptable. I also feel more carefree, and being carefree has been my ultimate goal in life.
@jordyn.242 жыл бұрын
i have always felt the way you felt about your hair and it being in a more natural state, but unfortunately my family doesn’t think it’s acceptable for me to wear my hair like that. i can’t go too long wearing my hair frizzier or combed out without my family asking when i’m going to do something to my hair, or that my hair looks a mess. it’s very frustrating because i used to love my hair no matter what it looks like but lately i don’t like my hair even when its in a twist-out or very curly. my family isn’t usually very accepting of sew ins either (unless they’re short and dark) but it’s gotten to the point where if my hair isn’t in some sort of style that isn’t my own hair (unless it’s straightened) i hate my overall appearance altogether, as ashamed as i am to say it.

@@jordyn.24 oh my goodness I totally understand where you are coming from and it makes me so sad. I beg that you please try to power through because natural hair is so beautiful and once we stop damaging it and learn how to take care of it, it’s perfectly manageable too! And I understand the family thing but from my experience, most of them (even the grandparents who have been the most brain washed [through no fault of their own] and set in their ways) can come around! One of my biggest tips to help with natural hair confidence besides all the obvious stuff you always hear (ya know, fake it til you make it/try not to care what other people think/etc) is to wear your hair in its natural state when you get dressed up. If you like makeup, wear some bold and flattering lipstick or eyeliner. Wear a nice outfit that makes you feel like you. Wear jewelry and other accessories. If heels make you feel cute and walk cute, wear heels! I see a lot of girls wearing their hair in it’s natural state on the regular when they are in sweats and no makeup or their regular work outfits. And then every time they have a wedding or party or something, they wear makeup, jewelry, heels, AND get a wig or silk press! I SWEAR with a lot of those hairstyles that you feel uncomfortable in, you could come to see the beauty in, if you styled yourself to the max and left the fro as is. And you can play around with natural hairstyles to help too- messy low bun, top knot, sides pulled back, etc. Just make your hair look intentional, like you wanted it to look that way and it goes with your whole look, rather than feeling like you just didn’t do anything to it and need to get it done. And idk you so maybe you’re already doing this and this isn’t helpful so if so, just ignore me lol! I just really wanna see more of us wearing our natural hair out! It’s so gorgeous!😁

I don't believe in hair typing anymore. I used to, but then I realized it's just another tool used to divide the black community, just like skin colors. It's the idea of having categories for features...what other group of people has categories like these? Light skin, dark skin, 4c, 3b. People argue about hair type, debate about if so and so's hair is REALLY 4c or not (there's so many videos titled "Reacting to 4c hair videos," on KZfaq. Everyone's hair is different. Hair types don't even really help because one person's "4c" hair can be completely different from someone else's "4c" hair. Hair typing is just another thing our community argues about 🤷🏽♀️ Just learn what your hair likes and needs based on density, porosity, etc.

Have all conversations about those two topics been productive? No. But there’s a reality that those phenomenon exist and seriously influence intracommunity dynamics

I don't think the hair typing system is bad. it can be useful when learning about how your hair reacts to certain techniques and learning what tools you should use on your hair to get your desired result. Hair typing taught me how I should be detangling my hair. I think the only danger comes when you prioritise hair typing over hair porosity. Rather choose your hair products based on porosity so your hair has an easier job at receiving moisture. This has been one of the most important things I've learned since I've started my natural hair journey 3 years ago

Yes to what you said about us expecting other people to be comfortable with us (our hair) before we’re even comfortable with ourselves (our hair)!!! I literally just said that to a friend the other day when we were reflecting on our natural hair journeys. I’ve noticed the confidence that I now radiate with my natural hair or box braids is returned- as in I get A LOT more compliments on my hair now than ever before. A little positive reinforcement never hurts lol. When you’re truly confident and comfortable in your skin the world will fall in line. As for the hair typing system: I’m not bothered by it. But it took developing a level of detachment. I only really refer to it when describing my hair/texture for context or looking for styling inspo and tutorials because it helps me to have a frame of reference that best reflects my hair type. So I personally don’t believe that the system ITSELF is divisive rather it triggers deeply ingrained texurist beliefs about type 4 that existed way before the system. In other words, the typing system is only a symptom but not the actual root of the problem.

I got a natural hair stylist and she really has helped me with gaining confidence to wear my natural hair out. Its a process for sure. Love this video and love you Ki

FanTASTIC video!! I loved it so much that it took me double the time to watch it 😆🙌🏾 my favourite part of your video is how healthy your natural hair is and how comfortable you are with yourself and in your own skin! Keep up the awesome work girlie!!! 💛💛💛

You have beautiful hair, like honestly wow, that shape is so flattering. Honestly I stopped caring about my hair in the sense that I stopped doing all the treatments because it wasn't working, I live in protective styles, but wigs, my scalp just can't tolerate braids anymore which makes me so sad. I believe in stretching hair too, my hair thrives when it is stretched.

Hi there. Almost 5 minutes into watching you and I had to stop and write this. You are so young and have a great understanding of self. You have said so many deep truths that all 🖤 and 🤎 people need to hear. If you cannot see your stripped down self and honor and appreciate it then you can not project self love because it's not there in the first place. We are given a body and should honor it, not pick it apart and destroy it. Nature said each of our bodies was good enough to be brought into existence, WE ALL ARE CAPABLE AND WORTHY... NAPPY HAIR OR NOT! Leave a positive mark on as many lives as you can without destroying yours!

I went a year without heat just so I could get comfortable with my hair and learn more about it. I realized keeping it simple and blow drying every wash day is best for it. Now I just have to figure out how to get rid of all these products 😭

Something else I think people should realize is that it’s okay to straighten your hair AND have healthy hair. Like you 100% can have healthy hair and straight at the same time

It’s so true, when I finish washing my hair, it’s soaking wet with water I detangle, apply leave in conditioner then oil. I use olive oil. Then I do a protective style eg bantu knots. 10/10, my hair feels so soft. I tend to avoid gels.

Shes's right about just not caring when it comes to growing out your hair... I let my hair go for so long many times and every time, I would notice it got longer. Just a tip tho, when you do actually detangle your hair, don't get it wet first. Just comb it out dry so you don't rip out all your progress and break off the ends of your hair.

I feel like this is a sign. My hair has plateaued & has been breaking off a lot more recently from wash n go’s. I’ve honestly have just been over trying to wear my hair curly at this point due to the breakage & wash n gos that only last a day. So I’ve had this idea to start stretching/straightening my hair to help with length retention, but i wasn’t completely sure if that is what i should do. Hearing that stretching is what helped you confirms that it is what i should do. ✨

I find Hair TYPING only useful when it comes to STYLING. Because different textures call for different methods.

same! im not for hair typing when it comes to trying to categorize each persons hair and also because of ita texturist background, but it does help when searching for hairstyle inspiration

My, my, my!!! I feel you on the blow drying and styling your hair. Because I follow so many naturalists that really don't do that and they style their hair so well. But when I let my hair dry naturally, for one it shrinks like crazy but I find it hard to upkeep daily without overmanipulating and causing it to break or shed badly. :( But when I blow dry it out and style, I don't have this problem and I can go 2 weeks like that. So I was really pleased to hear you say your grandmother as a stylist recommend blow drying. I needed to hear that because it was just confirmation of what I was feeling but didn't really know how to explain it! Your hair is gorg & I had to hit the follow. Thanks again!!!

I like using hair types just to know if my hair will look a certain way in certain styles- it's frustrating when I try something just for it to not work bc my hair is too curly but I also respect girls who don't want to type their hair because it's not that deep and it's their choice

I can agree that not caring as much and creating simple routine is the best n easiest way to maintain and grow your natural hair. I cut all my hair off and it all grew back in a year
