WHY I DRIVE A TOYOTA 4WD | StoryTIME with Andrew St Pierre White

My relationship with Toyota spans 20 years, from 1994 when I wrote my second book, to 2014 when Toyota South Africa finally handed over the keys of the Land Cruiser Troop Carrier. That was in South Africa and the conclusion of that and many projects. Since that time I have had no connection or link with Toyota in any country. But I look back on it as one of the best experiences of my professional career. And it moved me from being solely interested in Land Rovers, to a life driving all kinds of 4WD. And, I have to admit, why I now drive a Toyota Land Cruiser. This is that story.

As a Toyota Prado Series 90 driver, I must say this is an utterly underrated vehicle. Definitely not as tough as a well maintained Series 80, but easier to drive and maintain. Definitely a badass too. Tougher than the later Series 120 and 150 for sure. In fact, the later versions had the D4d 163cv engine that combined good fuel economy and reliability; a class on her own for sure.

You may have addiction issues buddy :P But for reals its nice to be in a vehicle that does its job. With all that we have to worry about on the road or off road its nice to know the vehicle will do its job.

Andrew, '12 hilux owner myself, I wanna say I have watched all your vids twice +. I also own prado 120. And I used to have Pajero as a company car. I hope to get my hands on 70 series eventually but those come rare and tremendously expensive where I live. In any case, 5 + years with hilux, fully built and didn't have to change a "bulb".

Thanks again Mr White. It was watching you and Mr Dahl for the last few years that helped me decide on my vehicle. I have a 20 year old Prado that I purchased for an awesome price, and in the couple of years I've had it, it has never let me down. Have been to north Wales several times fartarsing about, and a long trip in the Pyrenees which was fantastic. It's just passed its MOT today with a couple of advisories, a great truck :-) Thank you again for all of your videos, I love them. Just a shame I'm stuck in Blighty with all its restrictions. Best of luck to you, keep them coming. Cheers

Loved, loved, LOVED your stories. Love Land Cruisers. Absolutely amazing vibe throughout the entire video. And at the end, just as you were saying you hoped it's not too long, I was like... No, it was too damn short! I want more! Thank you mr. White! You're an awesome awesome guy. p.s. On the side note, I've owned 5 Land Cruisers, and currently have two. One of which is a 120 Prado with 923 000 km's on the clock! I just know what you're talking about. I know! They truly are special. Indestructible, amazingly well put together, rugged, utterly capable and unstoppable machines. Nothing else comes near the level of a Land Cruiser. Nothing! I truly have no idea why I haven't yet, but I am now subscribed indefinitely. Gonna start watching all of it. Thank you again.

I don't care for many people whatsoever. I tend to be a tad difficult I suppose; which is why I'm glad Andrew isn't a cult leader or I'd be completely smitten. I could listen to this man for hours on end. I am a dedicated student. I can't wait to take his Masterclass. I've been blabbering on for 5 years about taking on a documentary type film. I have found both the inspiration and confidence to do that because of this man. Very few have the talent and skill to teach craft. Bravo, ASW!

Another great story Andrew I had a similar experience on my 105 last year. The engine cut-out halfway to Broome, cranking beautifully, no fuel. Alas I'd blown a fuse (excessive current draw by relays on aftermarket D-Gas), tried to figure out where it was, but after 10 mins I ended up running a quick fuse and wire straight from the battery + to the injector pump, and kept on driving!!! For a week or two we jumped out of the car, after turning off the key, to pull the temp fuse to stop the engine! Once back in Karratha, I was bothered enough to figure out the fuse location and replace. The simplicity of the 1HZ really does give peace of mind.

Can't stop listening to you Andrew. Some magic spell you have that I've been trying to figure it out. It's something about the deep love men have for their vehicles similar to the cowboy and his horse. It is the partnership that brings us through unforgiving terrain and gets us home safely I suppose. A love story with a machine that brings us freedom from civilization. I drive a VW Westfalia. Had it for 30 years with many great memories created with it. I also have a 4Runner and other 4x4s. I love them all like a woman loves her shoes. Always camping whenever I can with the family. Life is great! Thank you Andrew and cheers mate!

I also had the fuel issue with the 1HZ 105. I bought the vehicle in Cape Town, drove it to Durban and the next night it would not start after driving for the day. I found that it would start when it cooled down but when it was warm, it wouldn’t. Took it to the mechanic and he said it was common with the Patrols and 100 series, either remove or replace the immobilizer unit. Thanks for the great videos. I have learnt a lot from them.

The fuel consumption of the 105 makes perfect sense. My '97 Cruiser (1KZ-T engine with an Intercooler added in front of the radiator and a chiptune) drinks 18 liters on 100km below 95 km/h, and 11-13 above it. I have to be in Overdrive and keep the revs below 2000 to achieve that.

Fantastic story, thank you for sharing. As far as your fuel consumption to George and back, my 2 cents worth having had a similar situation with a modified Volkswagen- cruising at 140km/h and above, you are in a rev range where the engine can make use of the flowed head, modified camshaft profile etc. and actually “breathe”. The increased power and subsequent improved efficiency require less throttle to do the same amount of “work”.

That wasn't a bad review on Toyota at all, just on some of the people who didn't know there was no ECU on that version. I really liked the part where he got to show his ex work partner what vision he had for the company if he just had some humility to listen to his ideas in the first place. I love a good comeback!
