The floor of my chicken pen is like yours - I spread a lot of leaves on the floor to start out. I mean, I loaded up a 5 x 10 trailer with leaves mulched by a lawn tractor, into a bagger, twice. Now, I bag up the grass clippings, 7 bushel at a time, and dump those on top of the leaves. Chickens love to scratch through it. About once a week, I go out to the pen, and fork it over for them. The droppings that pile up go under, soil with worms and bugs come to the top, and you can feel the heat from the composting going on. Chickens love scratching through whatever I've turned over! Mow the lawn again, add another 7 bushel of clippings, and let it sit for a few days, fork it again. Extra benefit? When winter arrives, I have that mulch heating the chicken house for free! When autumn rolls around again, I'll give them at least another trailer load of mulched up leaves, to help keep things composting!

Just a warning that they can easily get an impacted crop from eating grass clippings.
@sv160
Totally agree with you.

What do you use to get rid of weeds and dandelions? Is it safe if you use and chemicals and give clippings to children?
