Lovely video my family left Dewsbury in 76 I’ve never been back the lovely building are still but the heart has definitely been torn out of it. Saturday morning 60s you couldn’t move in Dewsbury for people not just locals but coaches loaded with shoppers for Dewsbury Market. In the 47 years I’ve been away it’s just died and it’s so sad to see boarded up shops M&S gone even McDonalds couldn’t survive and Dewsbury Market isn’t the Market I remember and those Chapels in the cemetery that’s just disgusting they really need to fix those before they fall down.

Yes it is tragic. I remember the coaches coming way into the 90s. The market hasn't really changed apart from what's on sale.

Born and grew up there left in 99 so much has changed used to love Saturdays in town with my mates. Worked in Halfords opposite the bingo. Time has not done it well what a shame. Moved to Leeds last year after leaving West Yorkshire in 99 might have to pop one over day and remember the good old days

Dewsbury seems to be a similar size to Hyde, near me and has the same problems of empty, boarded up shops. They're talking about investing money in the area, but I can't see how that'll open any shops. The worst thing they ever did was get rid of the old wooden market stalls, people used to come from miles around to visit, you could get all sorts of stuff on that market and it filled the entire plaza in front of the Town Hall, now it's down to about 8 permanent metal stalls. Hyde used to be quite famous for its market like Oldham or Bury are, now all its famous for are its serial killers. (3 at the last count, Hindley, Brady and Shipman).

They're putting millions into Dewsbury too. The market story is same everywhere, theses people are too shortsighted to realise that that's where small businesses start. They're going to renovate the market, why? There's nothing wrong with it apart from attracting people to trade there. Same with the arcade bollocks, town is full of empty units, what's more smaller empty units going to do?

@@Bhh2 Yeah, that's the way it always worked with markets; if a stall was successful, the owner would invest in another stall if one was available and then move to a booth or a shop in the Mall or similar adjacent arcade. No stalls = no growth = no movement into shops = empty shops with no prospect of any businesses moving in. Desparately sad. They did the same thing to nearby Denton market, replaced it with an open plaza with a bloody fountain! End result, empty shops! Short term Smash and Grab economics, a bloody wasteland waiting to happen. 😔

Only go back to dewsbury to cemetery we’re my mum dad and sister are cemetery was a mess all over grown it was mess it was upsetting

I USE TO GO TO CADDYS BIN LID AMUSMENT ARCADE J&B,S WERE THEY SOLD FIREWORKS FOR BONFIRE NIGHT AND SANTA WAS THERE AT CHRISTMAS THE 1ST FILM I WENT TO SEE WITH MY SISTER AT CLASSIC CINEMA IN DEWSBURY WAS SUPERMAN WITH CHRISTOPHER REEVES

Great video i live near dewsbury way its a pointless town to go in the 90s was good lots of shops and markets now nothing left i only go to asda pets at home now and i subscribed to your channel i do food reviews etc if interested
