Here's the down low on having a low production "rare" hot rod. Parts are expensive AND hard to find! That means everything will take more time that you expect. The biggest hang up on this car.... Is everyone thinks it should be restored back to factory. I hate to say it, but shiny restored cars just aren't for me.
Now let's talk about that Canadian hater ‪@UncleTonysGarage‬

I don't often comment, but here it goes... This guy takes cars most people would crush and puts them back on the street. He's working with the same budget, tools and expertise that most of us have. More importantly, he's having fun doing it. Let's cut him some slack and watch a fellow hot-rodder enjoy his hobby while sharing it with us. Thanks. Rock on, Dan.

It was a complete rust bucket, and nearly everyone that saw it as you got it would agree that it was just far too rotted away to even consider trying to get it back on the road. I'm a 55 year old Gulf War Veteran from the US, I'm also a Chevy guy. I myself would've bought it for the trim etc.... and scrapped what was left. I'm happy that you proved me wrong. I'm glad that you put that old girl back together and saved it from the crusher. You've done an awesome job on the car, and I'm glad that you took the time to save it. I hope you can make it HUGE in KZfaq land, and be able to keep making great videos for all of us for years to come. No matter what, I hope you keep having fun and building drivers from old piles of junk. Anyone who thinks they can do it better is welcome to go ahead and do it. At the end of the day, you're doing what YOU want to do, with cars that YOU buy. Some people think they know how everything should be, and how it should be done. I ran into this with a bike I bought several years ago. 1977 Yamaha XS650. I bought it intending to make it a bobber style Triumph clone. Instead of making it rideable and enjoying it for what it is/was. I got it running and instantly tore it down, hacked it and over the years I've had only a few chances to get out and mess with it. I have it back to a roller, tore the engine apart down to the crank and checked/cleaned everything. (It still has the original cross hatch in the cylinders) painted the engine and re assembled it. And haven't touched it again in over a year. All the while, I could have been enjoying it for what it is this entire time.

I was lucky, before I invested all that you put out in money and time someone with the same feeling of I got to have that came along. I turned a 15,000 profit. He has 65,000 in it now and on his way to 80,000. That is not a great show car, but a great driver. It is because of the words Nomad. I love what you do and enjoy watching. And the home-made camper for the truck. Between the vehicles mentioned and upkeep on the house, there is not much in the budget to throw money at someone and say this is what I want, go ahead and do it! I do enjoy the big channels with a nasa "white room" type build area, millions of dollars worth of tools and various equipment, and a seemingly unlimited budget to buy all the fancy new parts and just bolt them together. I consider those channels as a "fantasy, escape" You, UTG, Slantfish65sd, barerosegarage, and many other small channels are more indicative to real world experiences. You seem to put these cars together quicker than anyone else on KZfaq. I look forward to every one of your videos. The Nomad wasn't a success when they first came out, they leaked around the tailgate window because of the severe slope and buyers resisted buying because of the higher price. In 1958 they built the Nomad as a four door station wagon. The Tri-5 Nomads were a hard sell as a used car because guys wanted either a 2 door sedan, 2 door hardtop,or a convertible. Just keep going in your own direction it's all good. Good luck on this build we're looking forward to your driving the Power tour this year.

Friend!!! do not pay attention to the idiots who sit down to criticize!! really that car was to be shredded, it was junk. and you, you brought it back to the streets!!! Giving an opinion is easy when you have resources and live on the other side of the border, I live in Argentina and you have a Caprice, and I know how difficult it is to maintain a car that was only manufactured in the US, and live far away and not be able to buy spare parts because of the currency difference... Go ahead with everything that's less to go, and it's turning out incredible... One would like to be able to leave it as original as possible but unfortunately nomad spare parts are already scarce in the US, and they are very expensive... the important thing is to be able to bring them back to life... I admire the work you do, greetings from Argentina!!!

Hang in there, brother. You're on the home stretch. I bought. 56 nomad in April that sat for 30 years. I thought I'd have it on the road by June. Finally drove it in September. I feel your pain! As long as I own it, It will always be a daily driver. You are right on about the crazy parts prices. Fortunately mine was mostly complete. BTW you will get used to ducking you head. Only took me 3 months to figure that one out. By then the lumps had went down. Old school rules!

You and Tony making "diss tracks" is hilarious! Both of you guys give us poor folk something achievable to strive for. I can't imagine owning a Nomad just because of the nickel and dime stuff.....Eff that! Cool car though.

I personally don't care what people do with the cars they own. It's their car and it is only a car. Your Nomad was literally a lot of air when you bought it with not much usable metal. It's amazing how you have brought it back to life. It is too bad that the parts are way expensive for that model. Maybe you could adapt window regulators and/or parts from another vehicle to work in it. Who cares if they are not original to the car as long as the glass goes up and down. Don't worry about what other people say you should or should not do, including me. Just keep on doing you. Take care.

I feel your pain exactly. 1965 Cutlass convertible. One year car, no aftermarket support, no repops, ended up with sbc, 700r4, Ford 9", I never open the hood at car shows. The snobberazzi when they see the sbc. I pulled this car out of the woods and spent 18 years and way too much money. For me it was like saving a stray dog from the kill room. Wishing I had left my a beater!

Dan, 2 things.... First, If you can't beat them join them! Dump all of the cold, Canadian real estate and buy a large piece of property in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Maybe your new neighbor can share some of those cheap used parts with you and here's the key..."Duty Free!" Here is some other inside info on that new potential neighbor (and keep this one under your beanie from those fanatical Mopar guys), he's on record stating that he likes Tri-Five Chevy's and specifically mentions the '55! Shoot, he may even start riding your coat tails! The town even has Mur's name in it if that not a sign from God Himself! Second, You need to go to the Columbus, Ohio area and look up a Nomad Whisperer by the name of Big Don at Don's Hot Rod Garage! Go have a beer with that guy and I think you will need about a week of counseling with that guy! He can help you with your frazzled hatred of Nomads and help talk you off the ledge! Kidding aside Dan, the Nomad is already a major huge victory. If anyone doesn't believe that, go back to the video when Josh dropped it off the trailer in the DD storage field. The fact that you are now making the car more realistic and drivable instead of the insanity of a concourse restoration that bankrupts you morally and physically is another major victory! You're doing a great job and hang what the haters say....rock on!

Spot on video. At 60 years old now I’ve been a junkyard dog my whole life. In 1985 I bought a 54 Corvette basically in the same condition as your nomad. And it was basically a rat rod for the 27 years that I drove it. I heard all the same crap. Well, like you say your nomad will be a major win. My 54 toilet was! Smitty in Vegas

Sometimes the car community sucks. I was into Talons and that community hated body kits and wild paint. I got into the AE86 chassis Corollas and that community was elitist about cars having rust. There's going to be gate keepers in every scene.

I feel your pain bro. I have been a mechanic for about 30 years restored or hotrodded about 75 cars myself. I quit after my 86 regal grand national is done or done enough. there are none of these cars ether.. when I started in 1974 I bought my first 55 chevy 2 door post for 75 bucks. Didnt run, but used parts were every where . Fast foward today the old cars in fields are rusty junk. Too many Im gonna fix er up someday and they died and the family junked it. As for your nomad I would have made a street gasser out of it. As for uncle T the man is brilliant . Keeping hotrodding alive . I live on a govt check I cant afford all shiney new stuff. Ebay junk keeps me going.

I absofreakinlutely love what you are doing with the Nomad. Definition : A nomad is a member of a community without fixed habitation who regularly moves to and from the same areas. Such groups include hunter-gatherers, pastoral nomads, tinkers and trader nomads. In my opinion you are building a perfect "Nomad".

I"ve used to subscribe to "Hot Rod" magazine in the early 70"s,I was about 12 years old, loved it.Wild Vettes & conversion vans were very popular, anyway, their advice back then was "Buy the best possible version of the car you want",pay up in the front, cars are way more expensive to restore than you think.Of course,I never followed that advice because I was a better mechanic than most.-"Yea,right".

Don't listen to the haters and those who think too much of them selves! Yes your crazy for the cost of parts, but are you happy for the most part? Build what you build and people such as myself will appreciate the fact you raised it from the dead! 55's are my fav year, any condition on the road, f'n Kool, hope to have one myself one day! Don't listen to the boys that have more time and money than brains, you do you and it will pay off in the end!!! Fun to watch you, can't wait to see you bombing it around! I feel you brother. We used to build cars and trucks. Now it's buy this and install it. That is assembly not built. I especially hate the TV hot rod shows that say "build a 600hp motor with spare parts". As they pull a used 900cfm dominator and top dollar cnc ported aluminum heads out of a cabinet and act the the average guy has that. Rather than the crap castings and 600cfm holley that was rebuild over and over. That is what average guy actually has.

DD Speed Shop and Uncle Tony are amazing real world mechanics and builders. I believe a lot of people are so fascinated with a lot of these unlimited budget builds. They get a new aftermarket suspension and engine and strip the entire chassis and create new body panel with budgets that have no bottom. Although they are entertaining to watch many of us don't have 40-100K to dump on a make everything new type of car. We make due with what we can afford and if that means getting parts of other similar cars or hitting a panel with a hammer then that's what needs to happen.

Good afternoon Dan. I basically just found your channel a couple of weeks ago and have been trying to follow the "66" Biscayne build but it's been kinda hard following the videos in order for me. That being said, I just ran across this video and I know that I'm a little late to the party. However, my dream car was a "56" Nomad. I found one that was a basket case. Took our last $700. dollars out of the bank and bought it. Almost ended up in divorce court over it. It actually became part of the family. I had the car for 32 years and didn't finish it. It was close to completion and I figured that I'd finish it upon retirement. Well, it sat for several years and a gentleman called me up out of the blue and offered me quite a bit of money for it and like an idiot I sold it. I literally cried when he took it out of the driveway. It was like losing a family member. I will regret that decision for the rest of my life. I now have a "63" Falcon Futura Convertible that will never be a concourse restoration but the interior is done, it has a new top, it runs like a dream, and I will start on all of the paint and body this winter. And there isn't enough money in the world to get me to sell it. God bless and remember that you have something very special.
