Seriously, I came in thinking "How is it possible for someone to hate Kimi no Na Wa?" and after the first 8 minutes I was thinking "Huh. Good fricking point."

So how come they left notes on each character's smartphones and never checked the years.
@tarogent
@tarogent 4 жыл бұрын
When they switch bodies, each character will be in the others respective timeline, and so will their phones and the dates on their phones. For example; if you were to wake up in someone else's body living in 2016, their phone wouldn't show the date in the time YOU were living in.

@@tarogent I get the logic. But I still think its a bit farfetched that the year would never come into question especially seeing as the same date wouldn't fall on the same day. Like instead of a Thursday the 12th would be a Monday for example.

Yea, you don’t really see their chemistry and their dynamic but I think it’s doesn’t really need that. I think that it’s just natural for them to start falling for each other because you’re literally swapping bodies with them, you would be thinking “Is this fate?” You’re literally getting to know them by BEING them, it’s just something psychological.

As much as I love Makoto Shinkai and his movies (especially Kimi no na wa) the fact that Taki has almost no personality is never brought up and I'm glad someone finally brought it up cause it's so true. Taki is just there, his only importance is that he switches bodies with Mitsuha. He is *as stated* "an observer"

it's a positioning on "disconnection" the underlying themes suggest interconnection to be a primary theme. One character is extremely disconnected the other is the opposite, but both characters have connection & disconnection along their ways as well. Very simple truthfully.
@liam2988
@liam2988 3 жыл бұрын
@@VincentX709 I'll give you that. I obviously did not think about that, but honestly, I feel there should still be some reason for me to like or really care about Taki. I'm not trying to come off as rude or cynical about it, but if I'm speaking honestly, I just feel as if his character wasn't fleshed out enough. I get the whole idea around connection and disconnection. It makes perfect sense, especially within the plot's narrative, but in my opinion, I just don't think Taki got enough depth for his character that he deserved.

you could also argue that this is one of the most intense forms of love since two people loving each other so deeply that they emulate each other has been explored in things like the twin flames concept. in this, it’s not necessarily you love the idea of living the your partner’s life or being in their position, but the love you feel is so intense that every aspect of the latter is incorporated in your own life since you’re so greatly intertwined with them. meaning your connection with them is so great that you fall for everything that has to do with them, you seek out the same lifestyle that they have unconsciously and practically become the same because of that love. in mitsuha’s case, initially it appears she is infatuated with the city lifestyle of taki’s, and it’s apparent that she’s enjoying the experience because she desires elements of taki’s life but not him. the more the cycle progresses, though, it’s shown that she starts to fixate on taki’s affairs and things pertaining directly to him like his interests. living in his shoes, she’s exposed to the very things that make taki who he is, and in turn, her experience with these things makes her more drawn to the person’s life she’s living. in their own ways, i think they both come to love each other based on the information they pick up on one other during the cycle. even sharing the same experience individual to them of the cycle in itself is something that binds them together. the mutual understanding that only they have is the basis of the bond that grows between them. summed up, i think the love that stems from being in another’s perspective is due to the fact that you come to admire the position you find yourself in, not because you enjoy their environmental factors or you love yourself, but because you truly understand the other person and would further implement the qualities in their life in yours out of love for that person

I think one little scene/shot that could give Taki 100x more backstory would legitimately just be a shot of Taki's empty apartment, shown after the one time we see his dad and around when he draws in his room. It would establish that his parents are absent while he has to work on his own to make it where he wants to be. We can contrast it with Mitsuha's family where sure her dad is pretty absent from her life, but she has a loving grandmother and close bond with her little sister. Show us more shots of an empty apartment. Give us a living area with nothing but legal paperwork, and let the audience empathize with his issues. Differentiate between Taki and Mitsuha's home lives and explore how that affects their interactions

I know this is a really old video, but I've been looking for some reason why I enjoyed this film so much and why it seriously changed my life and made me rethink the way I want to live. Why did this happen and looking at the film analytically, it doesn't seem all too amazing. I totally agree with you on that. But I think there's an important distinction to be made when analyzing movies like these. Cultural impacts if you will, which I personally believe this is. I think this movie isn't meant to say something unique or profound. It's not meant to teach the audience anything. Nor is it meant to change your mind about something or think about anything in a new/unique way. It's not mean to have great interesting characters, or have interesting relationships at all. I think, even if this wasn't Shinkai's desire, the reason why this film is so good, is that it has a believable depiction of a hopeful reality. Life is suffering, it's hard, people work hard to fail most of the time, just for a chance of success. Most people probably don't really know for sure what they're working so hard for. Call it escapism if you will, but this movie mirrors the life of the audience (Japanese people keep in mind, so a lot of the culture will probably be lost to the international audience. Although if numbers are anything to go by, this isn't true) in a unrealistic hopeful way that makes you want to hope and believe that your efforts aren't in vain and you might still be able to have what you're reaching for, even if you don't really know what that is yet. Shinkai doesn't write with rationality, primarily because we as people aren't rational. We're emotional, and that's what I believe Shinkai captures so well. Our emotional ourbreaks, our awkwardness, our wonder and surprise at the stars and models put in front of us, our averageness. That brings me to the characters. You mentioned that they could be caricatures (Taki at least) that we project ourselves onto, and while I believe that is true, I think it goes a bit more than that. Taki is fundamentally different than almost everyone in the audience, but we can still empathize with him so well because he suffers and wants like the rest of us do. Often times in movies like Eternal Sunshine, the character's actions and desires are rational and relate-able, but they're so far from emotionally relate able and they don't force empathy out of you like Shinkai's characters do. I personally chose to pursue life more quietly due to this film. The desires I have and the work I want to put into them burned much brighter than before the film and I felt inspired to keep wanting the things I wanted. I understand you didn't like the film and I fully respect your opinion. I agree with most of the points you had as well! It was an extremely well put together argument. But throwing things out like "people overhype stuff all the time" isn't a good explanation of why movies succeed. The primary audience of this film probably is at least in high school if not older, and there are touching things about this film. At the very least, it changed my life and years later I'm still thinking about it. Thanks for hearing me out, if anyone does.

I love this comment. I had a similar experience where this film affected me very deeply. Interestingly the first three times I saw it I thought it was an ok film. In all honestly I didn't understand why it was getting so much praise. To keep it short I thought I had missed something. So I tried watching it again and at the end of the film I kind of felt empty but not emotional at all. The third time I watched it I felt the same emptiness. I thought to myself maybe its just a shallow film. So I went on with my life and forgot about "Your Name". A year or so passed, then one day I went to see the movie "A Silent Voice" In theaters. I thought it was an amazing film. It touched my heart. I went home and carried on with my days listening to the beautiful soundtrack of "A Silent Voice". At this time of my life I was very lonely and confused and I didn't have many interests. I was living the life of "the average Joe" a very robotic life. I was very absent-minded. It was "A Silent Voice" that made me think about anime again. I hadn't watched anime for a long time, but "A Silent Voice" intrigued me so much I couldn't miss it. After that I realized it came out in 2016 in the same year of "Your Name". So I started watching some videos on "Your name" the cute orchestra covers on the streets of Japan and some videos on Makoto Shinkai. I finally decided I'd give it an other shot. At some point in the movie I started to see some things in myself in Taki's and Mitsuha's personalities. I started to feel what they were feeling. During the Katawaredoki scene my eyes teared up. I was filled with warmth and sadness.The next thing knew I was sobbing. I had chills go down and up my spine and felt so many moods and emotions I have never felt before in my life. I felt like the film was comforting me and telling me it was going to be ok. That I have to keep going. It was giving me sense of hope and melancholy at the same time. After the film finished I was crying throughout the whole credits. I then went to bed still sobbing until I fell asleep. "Your Name" to me wasn't a deep, unique, philosophical film It was an empathetic one. I am very grateful for "A Silent Voice" and "Your Name" . That was my experience with this film. They are certainly not cinematic masterpieces but they will always be special to me. There's this analysis I really like its called "Kimi No Na Wa. (Your Name.) Analysis | The Ties That Bind". This video helped me put it into words. I'm not good with words lol Anyways, Thank you for your time.

I think if Your Name was a series we could’ve learned more about the characters and how they interact with their environment and how living someone else’s life has affected theirs. Like show how Mitsuha living Taki’s rash nature made her not second guess herself or how Taki picked up drawing and Architecture because Mitsuha liked art and buildings and vice versa. It would’ve been WAY cooler seeing the slow burn of them realizing they love and care for each other that they end up changing parts of themselves for the other person

Same here, my partner and I (both of us are queer trans people, for context) watched it relatively soon after we first started dating because a friend described it as "romantic and good to watch with a partner" and we both found it painfully mediocre. I think the only time I actually felt moved by anything was that one surreal sequence that involved cells dividing and turning into the characters as they grew up. The rest of the time was a lot of cringing at thd lack of thematic follow-through and how many missed opportunities there were to explore both the nuances of the characters effectively living as queer and trans people while swapped (and all the social ostracization and psychological suffering and constantly having to figure out how to pretend to be cis involved in that sort of existence) AND the nuances of how living each other's lives would actually mold each other. At first Your Name seemed like two very individual self exploration stories where the characters cared about each other but were ultimately just exploring themselves individually and seeing what living a different life in a different body would be like (again, another frustratingly unexplored thing) rather than two people falling for each other by truly living each other's lives. Then the romance was added and it felt so forced and dimensionless it made we want to scream, because honestly, the only reason so many people buy this sort of romance is heteronormativity (because people see a boy and a girl they assume things must be going on and that the end result of a boy and a girl having that sort of experience must inevitably be romance..... and they project all sorts of stuff onto the relationship that hypes it up into something it just isn't) and pretty, atmospheric visuals. It seemed like an overly ambitious thing that kept shifting gears and hopping from thematic non-sequitur to thematic non-sequitur without actually saying anything substantial about love other than this very overrused idea of saviorism and the idea that romantic love is always just supposed to magically arise from close contact and intimacy between boys and girls. It felt so alienating and uninspiring to me as both a queer person and as someone who was actively falling in love with someone for the first time through casual coexistence and quiet, slowly-building intimacy. The fact that it dethroned Spirited Away in various lists and ranking measurements makes me want to cry, because even Chihiro and Haku who aren't even explicitly romantic ahd probably aren't into each other that way have more interesting and believable chemistry than the Your Name duo. The concept had something going for it, though, so I'll give it that.

"Gorgeous when it comes to visuals, but with mediocre stories." I think that's exactly it. It's like he's got the artistic talent to draw incredibly, but can't articulate the story. It seems as though this is the only way he can monetize incredible art. I just wish he could focus on the drawing and not have to force it into a narrative film structure. The music is always incredible too. It almost as though they should be dialogless films.

I have said time and time again, makoto shinkai films are popular for their amazing visuals and music, which carry the weight of the lackluster story. This leads to people saying "I liked the visuals and music so I like the film". The visuals and music are a parade of Ferraris, the story is the dirt road they drive on, it only serves to get them from Point A to Point B. If the spectacle is good, you don't care what they're driving on.

Kaiju I think it's partially because of the general way that humans function. When someone takes a negative stance towards something you enjoy, the brain automatically goes into a defensive stance because of leftover survival genes 'n' shit. It's normal for humans to defend what they like and attack views that oppose it. I personally find that the tone near the end of the video and the general cutting in clips from... Whoever the hell that was praising it like it was the best thing ever made throughout, saying the humour was original, yadda, yadda. They personally sounded really stupid to me and cutting in examples of him made me feel like I was being insulted for liking something, which you know, it's fine, it happens. Gave me a sort of "If you like this movie, you're mindlessly praising it for things that aren't unique and should feel bad" feeling which I can totally see raising the dislikes. It feels a lot more negative than I personally feel it had to be, which gives me some negative vibes towards the critique in general, it's only human to feel that way. I dunno, maybe that's just the style of this channel? But it's just, in general, a style I don't care for. I don't care much for nitpicks, I find it to be kinda... Unnecessary? Nitpicks are nitpicks. Personally, I didn't enjoy this movie because I found it necessarily deep. As stated, a movie where two people in love travelled back in time to stop the Titanic from sinking is totally a movie I'd go see, so as a critique I guess I can just shrug at it? It's not exactly a dealbreaker. I felt that as stated, the critique being done here is aimed more at people who blindly think it's a masterpiece. I am not one of those people, so, well, it did nothing to convince me of an opposing view, nor did it feel like it really tried. It kinda fell flat for me because I just enjoyed it for what it was on the surface, a body-swapping comedy with a twist that felt, well not original, but at least somewhat interesting. Travelling back in time to stop a tragedy is a decent enough plotline for me to feel somewhat invested and I have no issue with different tones throughout a movie. All in all, this video kinda left me feeling not angry, more disappointed? Like it could've worked a lot better at explaining what they didn't like by removing a lot of the interruptions at 0:37 4:40 8:09 13:33 15:27. Without these parts being included, I can definitely see it being a far better-received video but as it stands, it feels unnecessarily negative towards the people that enjoy it. Wow, this was originally meant to be a very short comment about why people are quick to see something in a negative light and now it turned into this. Well, shit. Have it anyways.

My main issue with this film is with the plotting. When comparing this movie to that of "A Silent Voice" we see the exposition in the first 20 minutes. The viewer gets to see how Ishida and his friends treat Shouko and get a foundation of what the film is about, how each character operates, etc. From there we see the inciting incident where Ishida becomes isolated from his friends, is put into a similar perspective to that of Shouko, and eventually tries to kill himself. The story continues into the rising action as Ishida slowly regains friends and attempts to make up for his past mistakes. This is all halted in the climax, where he pushes his friends away and Shouko attempts suicide. A Silent Voice follows the basic principles of story telling, whereas Kimi no Na wa throws these concepts out the window. The movie starts with an exposition where it does similar things to that of A Silent Voice, (establishing setting, characters, etc.) and then continues to the inciting incident which was intended to be the mysterious switching of Taki and Mitsuha's bodies. This inciting incident falls rather short however, as the ensuing rising actions feels more like an exposition rather than the building of tension. In the first hour of the film, there is no building of tension, or real development to the story. It seems the writer intended on showing the dysfunctional way the teens were living out each other's lives and making that the rising action, however, this viewing experience is rather bland as the characters (specifically Taki) don't really evolve or showcases their passions, dreams, and life to the viewer (which you pointed out in your video). You point out that the date between Taki and Miki was rather pointless (which I very much so agree with) and the characters don't have deep interactions with the characters around them when they switch lives; leaving no room for the viewer to latch on to their love for each other. Overall the entire first hour of the film intended on being the rising action didn't achieve the goal of furthering the story or developing the characters, and the rising actions was more or less two teenagers living out their lives dysfunctionally and grabbing each others titts and dick. An hour into the film Taki comes to the realization that Mitsuha is dead, with the only thing left of her being the faint memories he has of her and her family. This realization feels more like the inciting incident, but at this point we are already an hour into the film. The rest of the movie where Taki and Mitusha go on to save the town from the meteor more or less follows the premise of rising action, climax, and falling action (however time traveling felt very confusing and just a random aspect of the movie that was thrown in to continue the story) ; however, because the first hour of the film is wasted not developing the story, the meteor being the main conflict feels rather cramped in and doesn't really connect with the themes and symbolism of the movie. The falling action at the end of the film, where Mitsuha and Taki are attempting to reconnect with one another but can't seem to find each other is supposed to be the nice bow at the end of the movie, where the two lovers finally meet again. However, because the first hour of the film didn't really develop the characters or give a reason for the viewer to feel a deeper connection to the characters and their relationship, I found myself not really caring that they ended up with one another or their love for one another in general. The film is by no means bad, and is one of the most visually stunning animes I've ever seen, however, in comparison to a film like A Silent Voice (which Your Name greatly overshadowed) I can't help but think this film was outdone by that of A Silent Voice and had the potential to do much better.

As much as I like the film, you brought up solid points on its flaws and why it fails to be the monolith people pretend it is. I honestly believe A Silent Voice deserved far more acclaim than Your Name, because that was a film that committed to its themes and did so by utilising the medium of film & animation. Sure, it's based on a manga, but the fact that it adapted said source material into a cohesive film that stands well enough on its own is more praise alone than I can give to Your Name's muddled plot, especially toward the end.

I want to post my opinions before the video and see how well they line up. The time hopping thing was creative but a little dumb (not the core concept but the execution), the plot was pretty logical yet complicated (a good thing imo) with the in universe rules, yet the power of love kept on breaking some of the laws set up. Kinda annoying. That is dwarfed though by my fustrations toward the romance aspect of the movie. I hated it. The characters only flirted with each other through time, they met during that twighlight scene but they don't even fucking remeber it afterwards so what is the point. Yeah sure while they might be twirling around their stupid strings of faith, I'm left feeling nothing. I cannot empathize with a relationship that consists of a few words, none of which are even remembered. I want witty dialouge, funny scenes, and heart felt conversations. Not this fate bullshit. I can't feel anything about it if the movie just keeps on waving this "ooooo destiinnnyyy ooooo" in my face. While the concept of feeling empty all the time is a feeling I'm rather aquainted with*, that dosen't make we wish these characters got together. Love should be an attraction towards because of a personality, not an escape from a supernatural depression. *like seriously give me my inter dimensional ring or my superpowers or my ability to see dead people already. Make my life an esekai already. I'm so fucking bored and all my friends are now hundreds of miles away and im surrounded by morons, fucking everyone around me (literally everyone, I doubt there is a single person in my school who even knows this movie, which in a school of 3000 is baffling)! If thats the case, it kinda carrys a message that you dont need to be interesting to like be interesting to anyone. this movie stressed me out so much. Thank you for making me feel at least sane.

You find it creepy because the director wanted you to see the events as Taki. Maybe get the point that the movie makes sense logically if you see all of the connecting from his side seeing as Mitsuha is dead. You do get that they lived days as each other and probably knew each other better than anyone else right? He has a character and its a pretty clear one, it's just not as defined by his family as he's is. Her family and friends are all she has while he's focusing on architecture, his job, his crush. You'd literally have to not pay attention or fight noticing these things in order to miss them.

Some good points you raised there. Especially regarding the gender roles -- those scenes were kinda embarressing. One of my biggest issues with this movie is the whole meteor strike. It's treated as something that just happened once like it's nothing. You'd think a metreor strike that killed 500 people and whiped a town from the face of the Earth would be one for the history books, seeing as I can't think of any such event ever being recorded in human history. In Your Name this is shelved as just another disaster, like it's an earthquake. I'm sorry, but it doesn't work that way. Certainly not only after 5 years have passed. This is an occurance that would've had the entire world shocked for the next decade, and placed that town among the likes of Pompeii. But our male protagonist actually needs to be reminded that this happened no more than 5 years ago?
@kirbyofthestars9904
@kirbyofthestars9904 6 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but for such a comet small like that strikes the town in the film is pretty damn small. The last time we had a falling comet hit the earth, which was the Russian Comet in 2013, did not cause such an awful dramatic explosion compared to the exaggerated version like the one in the film. That and how the hell did space organizations look closely at such a comet coming nearby not notice an oddity of the comet maybe splitting? Considering modern day technology to look closely at space rocks and whatnot.

CasualShinji I think to be fair he was just a little kid when it happened and given that yes it's significant but not close enough to impact his personal life it's at least believable that he would forget or even if every year there is some kind of Remembrance Day for it there are so many rando villages in the outskirts that his personal bias of not wanting her to be dead may of made him filter out that possibility

Dynamitrix 100 yeah sure but i don’t think his specific age really matters that much. Just the fact that minors are usually more self absorbed not to hold onto info about things that happened to randos in the middle of nowhere. People are vastly underestimating our ability to not remember tragedies. Take California right now, the wild fires have killed I believe 74 people and 1000 people unaccounted for and over 8000 structures destroyed. Big problem? Yes. Will people remember in 3 months? Nope, unless you were personally affected. In the gulf coast they have what are called 500 year flood plains. Basically there are areas that have a huge ass flood that is likely to kill a bunch of people most likely to occurs once every 500 years. But people still live there and people still die and every time it happens we who don’t live there say oh the horror and then forget until it happens again. My point being that besides the novelty of it being a comet. The death toll and the inoperable status of the town aren’t that big of an influence to stick in people’s minds or make it into mainstream education beyond being a fun fact mentioned in astronomy class that one time in 10th grade because the teacher was trying to make science cool by mentioning something you might remember hearing in the news. What matters most is location. If a major city was hit then it doesn’t matter how small the death toll is. There would be a fucking remembrance day and everything but rando village out in the boonies gets a nice aside comment every time a comet comes close. People mention it would be on the level of recognition of Pompeii but that was a major trade city not a rando village near a volcano. Which I will now mention a village called San Miguel Los Lotes which was destroyed 5 months ago this year by a volcano with 300 people still missing or dead and nobody really cares (so no not a thing the whole world would call notice too). A year after 9/11 people personally harmed by it struggle to receive aid because its no longer the trending tragedy. Humans are pretty shitty at showing empathy when we don’t have too. So is it believable that the government just relocated everyone and called it a day without putting it in the texts books? Yup. Is it believable that he didn’t remember a tragedy 5 yrs ago? Well given that we can’t be bothered to remember tragedies from a year ago I think that would be fair portrayal. I appreciate the optimism in believing we would care or at least bother to jot it down into many more texts books but even if that was the case what would that effectively change about the people in the movie? He would still need a village survivor to recognize his sketches for the movie to have a creditable connection for why he thought the two towns were the same one

The animation is beautiful and the body swaps at the begining spike your curiosity but that's it. No interaction between characters, "love" comes out from nowhere, comet comes out from nowhere, time travel comes out from nowehere and all the stuff that you said. It's like they sent some random bullshit along a love story to add more depth but it doesn't work like that. It was still enjoyable to watch even without getting "hooked" but it was so praised and compared to the Myasaki movies that when I went to watch it in the theaters I expected better. At the end , getting hooked on a show is purely subjective. A lot of people hate cm per second but I loved it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The “romance” was nonexistent for me. Plus the characters were just so flat. And empty, in a way.. plus, the scene near the end where Taki writes “I love you” on Mitsuha’s hand? Everyone raves on about how sad and tragic that moment is, and I just snorted and rolled my eyes. I haven’t seen the movie but I’ve read the manga. Hearing all these thoughts you have about the movie are very interesting. Their romance is, in my opinion, definitely played out better in the manga. You get a better backstory and, if my memory’s correct, they both have more interactions with each other’s lives. You get to experience everything more and get more time for the characters to connect. It might be this way because mangas and books traditionally in comparison to movies provides more information than movies tend to. Anyway, I like the video and think it’s interesting the differences are between the movie and the manga

I absolutely love this movie. The soundtrack, the visuals, and yes, even the romance. I do agreee that there should have been more time to explore the body switching. And, I do wish we got to explore the lives and personality of their friends. But there were tons of little moments where we learn about Taki. For instance, when he swapped into her body, we already know he has a short temper becuase he had the band aid across his face. Unlike her, he sticks up for himself and thats why people started to like her more. Because she is bolder and more charismatic since Taki feels that confidence in her life and she feels that way in his BECAUSE they WANT to help each other out, NOT becuase they are just simply being themselves. And as for the gendered aspect, I dont really think thats the point. I think they swap bodies in order to live the opposite lives of one another. She wishes to abandon her life as a shrine maiden and pursue a life unweighted by family pressures, and he lives in a bustling city and was needed to show the slower parts of life and town as opposed to his go go attitude. The grandma also serves as a somewhat parental figure for Taki as its clear he doesnt get to learn tradition at home. Finally, I heavily disagree with the disaster aspect. The whole point was that they used Misubi and the themes of the past to change the fate of the town. That was what the ancestors were attempting to secure. I think Mitsuha leaving to pursue her dreams but maybe showing her sister taking on the role of shrine maiden would have been beautiful. Finally, Taki wrote I love you on her hand because he knew they would eventually forget regardless since the gods were altering their memories and the whole sequence became more like a mistful dream. So he wanted to show her in that moment no matter she is loved because writing the name is useless. Overall, while I agree with some points, I think this movie is amazing and its something you watch as a feel good with a touch of romance. Id argue the main point is cultural past figuring out what your purpose is and then the romance. But thats just me. Will forever love this movie.

I wholeheartedly agree that the animation and soundtrack is wonderful, and the former is definitely Shinkai's forte. But I do want to defend GoatJesus a little bit and maybe provide a bit more discussion. 1) For the story aspect, I'm assuming you mean the themes and events that occur in the film right? Because he certainly did focus on other aspects, such as the characters, and imo characters =/= story. Characters add flavour to the story; the ways in which they are characterised to react to certain events are what humanises them and helps engage the audience. I hate to appear as some "raving, hateful Ghibli fan", but Miyazaki has created some great films with stories that are less dramatic than Your Name, and yet have people rewatching them over and over largely due to great characterizations. So all in all, he didn't "only focus on the story aspect". 2)As for why he didn't talk too much if at all about the great art and soundtrack, I might offer my perspective on this. Your Name is so overhyped to the point that pretty much every anime reviewer has praised it in their videos, and hell, Your Name's own music video is so popular that I think that pretty much everyone who has heard of this movie knows for its beautiful art. Perhaps it just doesn't need to be said, as at this point, praising Shinkai's art for being fantastic is like praising the coolness of a cold drink in summer. Maybe thats why he just included a clip or two. But I think that even more importantly, there may be a shared opinion that good art and good soundtrack does not equal to a good film ( I do want to emphasise "opinion" though, as I do respect your love for this film). I think that, even above a great story, great characters are needed for a film to be emotionally enagaging, and to me, Shinkai did not deliver that, and no amount of detailed backgrounds, detailed lighting and albeit great colours can make me rewatch something I can't/ don't want to connect to. Maybe he felt the same. The soundtrack is, again, wonderful but I guess it just isn't enough to make some people overlook the other flaws and to find this film "good". Sorry for the essay, but that's just a few points I'd like to share.

They spend more time taking us out of the story to show us a music video with a standard anime op than actually developing the story yeah the stuff they showed us was funny and nice to watch but the flip from the girl getting the gut a date and suddenly realising she liked him and he her was really sudden. I still liked the ending though but it felt like they were more just good friends for 90% of the film. And I don't like 5 centimeters per second. That ish annoyed me to no end.

Probably my favorite body swap would have to be Mayonaka no X Giten. First issue starts off as a generic stereotypical body swap, and ends with the main character returning to his own body to find himself covered in his sisters blood. From there it descends into a suspense mystery thriller where the MC and the girl who's body he initially borrowed are searching the most depraved corners of the body swapping forum to try and find his sisters killer while avoiding the law who's rightfully convinced he did it.

Hey man... thanks a lot for making this video. Tho it's been a while huh? When you *imagine* being in someone's life... this movie visualizes it so well, beautifully with lots of care, gorgeous songs and intricate symbolism that you puke joyful, melancholic, dense emotions for months. Years. A satisfying, unique, refreshing insight of what many people have wondered about. ((Oh, and perhaps the opressing social standard Japanese have makes them need to let loose more than a lot of people, so this kind of fiction/escapism is a really good thing. Makes sense if they make points like "leaving the past behind" and "love can come from sharing your life with someone else")) But when you're really *being* there, truly delving in your 5 senses and experience the entire picture of a stranger's life- hardships, broken or new relationship with others, new environment, new responsibilities. The protagonists would have been dead meat, and so will we. Yes... in a movie, it doesn't matter, those details will never be significant to passerbies, and we will never be like them. That's why... in the hearts of people who are grounded in reality, this movie is nothing but a lie. The existence of this movie will not help people cope through reality, because it only treads on what can never be. It doesn't feel like you're there. It doesn't try to comfort you, or let you reflect on your existence. Your existence is nothing that can be related towards this movie, and romance can only get so far. This movie is what it is, and our reality is what it has always been. if it gets fleshed out one day... i'd like to see how it grew.

I have just watched the film and came to youtube, then I saw the video "Why I hate your name" and thought, how could someone dislike this amazing film?, halfway through the video I realized you got a really good point, thanks for bringing it up I feel like the film is much more clear in my mind, and I still love it, many things could be added to enhance the plot, but I know that in the future when I see the film again I will cry for the second time, but this is all I had to say, I appreciate your comments.

First up, I'm going to say the movie definitely isn't perfect, and you're welcome to your opinion on it. I'm not here to hate on your opinion, more to discuss and debate it more. That being said, as much as I hate the criticism I'm about to say in general, it honestly feels like you didn't "Get" Your Name. It isn't some grand character driven romance where we're expected to get highly engaged with the characters, fully understand them, and feel great feelings when their love comes to fruition. It seems this is the story you thought it was, and are criticising it through this lens. But its not. It is a story meant to explore the feeling of losing contact with someone. The entire movie is about that longing. You get to know someone, they disappear from your life, eventually you forget them, and then one day maybe a chance encounter brings you back together. The romance is simply backdrop to this feeling. Exploring who Taki is as a character, his family dynamic, goals and aspirations, ect. isn't relevant to the story, so it wasn't put in. Taki as a character isn't hugely relevant to this feeling. He has this feeling, yes, but his father isn't the reason he feels loss of connection with someone he once knew - the fact he lost connection is. Whether his mother died or not is also irrelevant; it could serve to flesh out his character, but in a large sense that'd detract from what the film is actually trying to explore, by distracting from that point with some other story about his loss and growth as a character from that loss - which isn't something we're meant to be exploring defining him. What we want to explore, is how his loss of connection with Mitsuha affects him as a person, and thus he is framed entirely in terms of his relation with Mitsuha. Adding extra plot elements would just confuse this. In fact, the few times we see his character develop, it is entirely driven by this. Why does he want to become an architect/landscaper? Because he has this inextricable pull in his mind, from when he had a connection to Mitsuha, and the feelings he has for the landscape he experienced with her. His loss of connection has caused him to seek out a way to re-make the superficial parts of that connection. Mitsuha on the other hand, has her family situation explored as it is directly relevant to the plot. It explains how this whole body swapping thing is working, why they lost connection, and why its so hard for them to reconnect afterwards. She doesn't exist, until the end of the movie, after she loses connection to Taki - and this is somewhat intentional symbolically as we are viewing the movie, in all honesty, from Taki's perspective. Once she disappears, its like she is dead. Low and behold, she actually is, and Taki strives to regain that connection. She serves to contextualise the relationship Taki had, to show us what he experienced, so we can see how it affected him. This is also why it seems so one sided; her purpose isn't to explore Taki's home life, its to explore his connection with her. About the only scenes we have of her in Taki's body are the establishing scene, there to make it obvious they're body swapping, and scenes with Taki's boss lady, which is there to explore how his relationship with Mitsuha recontextualises his other relationships; even after losing Mitsuha, he can't just move on. He still feels that yearning for lost connection, and can't just date his boss that he used to like. When we get to your scenario instead, we get a completely different, and worse, movie in the context of what the movie is trying to do. How does that intro, exploring who Taki as a character is, serve to explore the main idea of how the loss of his connection with Mitsuha affected him? You seem to see this as a story about Taki and Mitsuha falling in love, and overcoming all barriers to have that love be a thing. The romance is the focus. But that's not what the movie is trying to do. The loss in connection between the two is the focus, not their romance. Its about Taki losing Mitsuha, and how that affects him as a person; he tries desperately to reconnect, but ultimately fails, and as time passes almost completely forgets the connection outside an unexplainable longing he feels, that underlies all of his actions like trying to become an architect. Then he sees her again, barely even recognises her but knows its her, and ultimately reconnects. That's where we end, because the romance isn't the focus; we don't need to know whether they fall in love and if the romance works out, we just need conclusion in whether that connection remains forever severed, or they reconnect. Another sort of 'theme' the movie explores is that of rural vs urban Japan, and the differences in culture and lifestyle between the two places. Seeing as most of the audience is likely to understand modern day urban life, which in Japan likely isn't amazingly different from the rest of the world, little is given to explore this in the movie; we see Taki go to school, hand out with friends at Cafes and the shops, go to work, and live in an apartment. Pretty standard for Urban life. Mitsuha we explore more, as local politics of town governance, what its like not having any cafes or places to hang out, what its like having everyone know you [Compare how all of Mitsuha's class know her, while with Taki we barely see their connection], and the traditional cultural heritage that is being preserved - all these things are likely less familiar to the audience of the movie, and thus need more exploration. Honestly, this feels a little like criticising My Neighbour Totoro for not giving in depth scenes where we see how the Mother's sickness is affecting her or her father, and their relationship. That's not the point of Totoro. Its the backdrop for the whole film, but its not the focus. This criticism follows through for the rest of the video; It doesn't explore gender stereotypes in great detail. Again, not the purpose of the film. There is a light spattering of showing how feminine traits can help Taki, and how masculine traits can help Mitsuha, but its all contextualised by their relationship. Anything that doesn't deal with exploring the core idea of the film, isn't explored, because that would be superfluous clutter . Its not a great disaster or timetravel movie? Again, its not meant to. It only pulls those ideas in as a creative way to explore its core theme more, and only uses them in relation to that theme; the disaster is what separated Mitsuha and Taki. Taki tries desperately to undo the disaster after losing Mitsuha, believing it will reconnect them. Fixing the disaster doesn't reconnect them, it just has them separate on better terms, with one of them not being dead. It allows the possibility of reconnection in the future, rather than reconnecting them now. Time travel, as already stated, is the reason its not so easy for them to reconnect; it wasn't just the disaster that separated them, but time itself. Its not a great film about dreams; Its not meant to be. Dreams are used as a metaphor of how it feels losing that connection, after a long time it feels like it was only a dream, rather than something that really happened. The movie has a central theme; that feeling of loss that comes from losing a close connection you once held. You ignore that theme to talk about the various themes it doesn't explore, because they weren't what the movie was about. Musubi doesn't set them up in the most straight forward manner? He's not meant to. He's not meant to set them up at all. Musubi's only goal is preventing the destruction of the town, which he does, through timetravel shenanigans. This just results in the relationship between Taki and Mistuha by accident, rather than by design. Fate breaking and weaving back together is again just a metaphor for losing someone and being reconnected with them. Movie doesn't say anything about fate? Same deal, its not meant to, fate is just a reason the two were connected to begin with, and once fate was fulfilled, they were disconnected. I'd also dare say Mitsuha is more masculine in confronting her father the second time. No, she's not Taki levels of masculine, but she's learned to stand up for herself and what she believes is right. This is progression for her character. You're right; her father isn't the primary adversary. There isn't even really a primary adversary. He's also not the climax of the film; he's the climax of Mitsuha's character arc, where from the start she has felt oppressed and worthless in the eyes of her father, but now she is willing to stand up to him thanks to how the relationship with Taki affected her. The climax of the film revolves around Taki and Mitsuha undoing the disaster that ended their relationship, and then re-connecting briefly mid way in order to do that. The climax ends when the disaster is averted, and we find out that just avoiding the disaster wasn't enough to bring them back together; they're still separated, and we get to see how that separation affects Taki now that they separated on good terms, rather than bad. This is also why we skip through all the relationship building stuff; its not important. What is important is that we know they had a strong connection to one another. We aren't going to be exploring the difficulties in maintaining that connection, what it means to each of them, how they feel about each other, or any other romantic movie jazz; we're exploring what happens when that connection is severed. This is also why the movie feels split into two halves; the first is there to establish the fact that they had a relationship, and is lighthearted and funny to convey that the relationship had a positive effect on them. The second half is darker, as it explores the negative effect that severing the relationship had on Taki, our protagonist.

Most of this video seems to be simply looking at Your Name as something its not, and criticising it for not being that, and I think that's... A little unfair. I'm not going to criticise Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood for not being a brilliant horror anime - it never tried to be, even though its got a lot of elements that could let it be that. A work should be judged on its merits of what its trying to do, rather than how good it is at being something its not Again, the movie isn't perfect. Its got flaws. Its also perfectly fine not to connect with the message of the movie, or to just not like it. But all of these criticisms, if addressed, would just make a worse movie. Because the movie isn't trying to be any of the shoes you try to fit onto it. Its trying to explore the feelings that occur when a connection between two people is severed, that feeling of longing, of forgetting, of wondering if it was a dream. The desperation of trying to reforge that connection, the sadness of failing. This is also why many connect to the movie; most people have experienced this. They don't go into the movie and leave feeling moved "This reminds me of falling in love with my first love", its "I remember feeling like this when my best friend from primary school moved away to the other side of the world". Its not about disasters, time travel, love, fate or anything else. Its about completely ordinary loss, that just happens sometimes in life; we drift in and out of each other's lives, and sometimes that can't be helped - even with those we have forged an irreplacable connection with. How it affects us, how we deal with it, how that FEELS - that's what the movie is about. If you've got criticisms on that front, odds are I'll think they're very valid. But I don't think criticisms about it not being a good romance movie, or disaster movie, or movie about dreams or fate or gods are very valid criticisms. Its likely more accurate to say you just didn't connect with the movie, and that's perfectly ok, but all these things aren't the fault of the movie. They're just the way things are sometimes. Not every movie can connect with everyone, not every message will resonate with everyone. That's acceptable, and it doesn't make either party worse at what they are because of it. It just means they didn't connect.

The thing is, since their characters have no real depth, nor their interactions, there is no way to understand why they long so strongly after eachother's companionship. It's not dynamic, not because it's not meant to be a romance, it's because the connection between the two of them is forced Doesn't matter if their intention was to represent a romance or not, because at the core, whaterver their relationship was meant to be, it's still shallow, because they are too.

I noticed this as well, but I think it was more coincidental after hearing Shinkai's problems with the film. The budget just wasn't there to make the film as complete as he wanted. Yet I still think there is enough implied connection that a lot of depth isn't necessary to make the characters strike an emotion. Rather, I think this is what people think is needed. There's a lot to be said for turning your brain off when it comes to feeling a film rather than critically picking it apart. I don't find it unbelievable that two people switching between each others lives, jobs, personal relationships, etc. would feel a closeness for each other, or an empty space when this suddenly stops and the only memory there is an abstract emotion. Goat is trying to look at this like it's Eva, and it's just not. A lot of reviewers make the mistake of approaching every film in the same way, when this is not at all how actual humans approach art. Stupid as fuck and lazy, basically.

I agree with the “We need to see more connection stuff when they are switching”. I too wanted more scenes where they switch and experience each other’s lives. But when you went personal about taki talkin to his dad, i disagreed. You gotta remember they are teens, and if i was mitsuha in Taki’s body, i wouldnt even dare interact too much with the father, so that everything can go normal and smooth without anyone realising the switch. You take it like these characters should already be experienced in the switch, you are forgetting that both of them are shocked by the phenomena and they will always be anxious of their actions, especially towards their parents or relatives. Both of them want the phenomena to stop and continue life without change, but what you suggested was “change”.

The movie is filled with juxtaposition. Boy vs girl, city vs country, tradition vs progress, family vs career, past vs future, massive natural disaster vs interpersonal human drama etc. I don’t find the fact that the characters are given disjointed sets of information about them a problem with the story but rather intentional and meaningful. Mitsuha’s life and conflicts revolve around her uneventful country life and her relationship with her family. She wants to get out, find a place for herself in the world. We’re told nothing about her hobbies, her goals, her plans for a career aside from her desire to go to the big city, yet we are told a great deal about her family and her role in the community as a shrine maiden. Rather than try to change her life however Mitsuha passively complains about all the things that she is unhappy with. Her concerns are all focused on the past; where she came from rather than where she is going (it’s very fitting then that all the bits of her life that we see are all taking place a few years prior). In contrast we are given next to no information about Taki’s family. The reason being that family life is not a big concern in Taki’s life. His father provides a place for him to live but he is more or less on his own to strike a path for himself. Taki is very independent active in his own life. Unlike Mitsuha, who can’t even be counted on to get up by herself on time in the morning, Taki is left to sleep in if he feels like it and basically has to fend for himself every day. He has a paying job, he has a hobby that he aspires to turn into a career someday, he even has a girl in his life that he wants to date. Taki’s life is full of aspiration; all his concerns are about what he’s going to be doing in the future. Despite all their differences, there are two important things that these characters come to share in common: 1) They each become completely enamored with the place that the other lives in and 2) They envy the lifestyle of the other. This is where the romance between the two spawns. Mitsuha falls in love with Taki because she loves Tokyo and admires Taki’s work ethic, drive, and aspirations for the future. Mitsuha actually helps Taki achieve one of his aspirations by scoring a date with his crush; something which Taki is obviously moved by. Taki helps Mitsuha as well however by bonding with her family, shaking up the status quo with how she is viewed by her classmates, actively improving her life with her friends by building them a “cafe” and straight up confronting her father later in the movie in a way that she would never do if it were not for Taki. Through body swapping these characters come to find that one another has things in their life that the other greatly desires. Mitsuha is allured by the energy of busy Tokyo life and Taki is drawn to the serenity of the countryside. Through her, Taki finds a place to long for and look back on, whereas Mitsuha finds a place to long for and look forward to. These characters fall in love because they find completeness in each other. By living eachother’s lives they get to know exactly what is missing in theirs and long for the things the other has to offer. They don’t even have to ever meet to know that there is a person out there that completes them.....cause that what it feels like to long for a soul mate. And that’s what Your Name is about.

Nice waxing of poetics in order to paint the movie into being something it's not. 1. We are *not* told a "great deal" about her family. I do not get a sense for her sister or her grandmother. Neither is characterized well (can you give examples of both beyond shallow "wise old woman" or "sassy little sister"?) They have no conflict, arcs, or much history etc. How can you possibly make the claim that we are told a "great deal about her family?" That the mom died and dad left the shrine (not even left the family, mind you)? That the family has a history of body swapping? That's not that much. Curious that you leave out that vital information explaining exactly what you mean. 2. You are factually wrong about a few things in the Taki section. Taki is not shown having wanted to date that girl. Rather the opposite--remember the line where he says he doesn't want to date anyone after the music video montage? You're so full of it. He's not full of aspirations and his drawing skills don't actually go into landscaping. Landscaping is about building things such as physical garden structures and irrigation systems and has very little to do with drawing. Architecture or being a landscape architect (which you should google the difference of landscaper and landscape architect) is about drawing designs that get built. Even then it's about blueprints for a landscape architect. I have to assume the film meant landscape architect. But Taki does not concern himself with his own future until after graduation and Taki has not shown us that he plans to use drawing in order to become a landscape architect. You are objectively incorrect. These are factually not in the film. 3. If they envy the lifestyle of the other then why doesn't Taki move to the countryside or say he wants to? This isn't explored in the movie on Taki's side. Give me a time code or quote from the movie where Taki is shown envying Mitsuha's country life or in awe like she is with the city on his end. He's not wandering through the countryside in utter wonder and excitement. Doesn't happen. He sees the crater and thinks it's pretty. Wow--that must mean he envies her life. He stays in the city you know. He doesn't envy her lifestyle from what I can see. He's a tourist if anything. 4. "Mitsuha falls in love with Taki because she loves Tokyo and admires Taki’s work ethic, drive, and aspirations for the future." < Where the hell was this in the film? It's not because you're reading into things that weren't shown and aren't there. She never falls in love with Taki's work ethic and drive. "Mitsuha actually helps Taki achieve one of his aspirations by scoring a date with his crush; something which Taki is obviously moved by." < No he's not shown being moved by Mitsuha hooking up a date. He's shown being pissed at her, actually. Mitsuha knows way more about this girl she sets up the date with and shows more interest in her than Taki does. Taki does not want to date anyone and is not shown ever wanting to. You are inferring based on nothing. It's actually kind of incredible. I have nothing more to say. This comment is a perfect example of reading so far into the film that you're reading-in things I asked it to explore but it didn't. You think it's already there because you want to see it and not because it is there. If you were projecting any harder you'd be a movie theatre.

While you argue that there is so much that isn’t there in the movie, i’d argue that just because it isn’t explicitly spelled out for you doesn’t meant it’s not there. While this isn’t exactly a subtle movie it does deal with quite a bit of nuance. Most of Shinkai’s work is like this; he often uses background art and little details in the scenes to convey information about characters personalities and emotional states. Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. When you look at a piece of abstract or impressionist art....how do you judge that? I’m curious. If I were to assume that you judge those things the same way you judge this film I would say that you find all art of those types to be lacking in substance. Anyway, there’s no reason to be so aggressive towards me. I like the film, you don’t. That’s fine. Just how you wanted to talk about the things that frustrate you with this movie I wanted to let you know that I found something beautiful in those very same things. I took the time to point out to you that there is more informantion in the movie than you give it credit for, and to even explain to you how even the lack of information is meaningful in this movie. I’m not projecting, or maybe I am, but art is like that sometimes. What matters is what you take out of it.

You see the movie as not giving enough characterization to its two leads. I see a movie about two incomplete people who when combined form what could be considered a sufficiently characterized person....a very potent way to tell a story about soul mates in my opinion.
@cordee21
@cordee21 6 жыл бұрын
So you're saying that lack of characterization could work in favor of a movie? It's a basic romance story. You need to have some degree of characterization in order to make people root for them. My guess is either he made them generic as possible so the audience can self insert more easily, or it had too many plot points and simply ran out of screen time. However he managed to squeeze in boob jokes for cheap laughs rather than one meaningful interaction between the leads. And is he really that subtle? I mean we're talking about the man who put 40 minutes of monologue in 1 hour movie explaining how tragic everything is. We all know how his movies rely on those heavy emotional scenes. Almost as if he wrote those emotional moments first then play connect the dots around them. By connect I mean force. To me he's like a VN writer. He sells VN adaptations to the mainstream audience. The absolute madman.

I loved Your Name, the plot twist and the animation really got my heart going and I can definitely say that I enjoyed it. However you are right, all the points you bring up are very valid and correct. In retrospect, it was more the musics, stunning visuals and the intensity of the climax of the movie that left something in me. For the rest, I have no memories of getting attached to either character or their environment. It felt like two somewhat empty shells thrown into a visually complex and gorgeous world, the latter being much more impactful in the end. I wish their relationship had been developed like you suggested, I probably would have remembered the characters as much as the drawings. This reminds me a lot of Garden of Words, but just with more action. Garden of Words and Your Name both have incredible animation that left me breathless, especially as someone getting into art. But both feel so empty character wise that watching them is like sitting down to get inspiration for drawing. It’s like animated art gallery. I’m rooting more for the panels than the story. It’s like the developing teams got together and said: “okay so we don’t know how to write a good compelling story BUT WE KNOW HOW TO DRAW REALLY REALLY WELL.” And I can get behind that. They do know how to draw very well, and that alone makes me unable to hate either Garden of Words or Your Name. But I find it sad to waste such massive talent on a flawed story full of flat characters. That’s it thanks for reading my mini essay lol

I respect your opinion and can see where you're coming from, but the flaws you mentioned don't hold me back from still liking this film. I think circumstances of Taki and Mitsuha where enough for most people to get emotionally invested. There's a video of Japanese elders watching Your Name and loving it because of they relate on an emotional level with growing apart from someone you love and not confessing to them before they never see them again. Maybe the movie has less to say about stuff, but it leaves enough open for people to relate to certain parts and nailing those things enough for people to love the movie.

GoatJesus My point is the same as yours. Popularity does not equal quality, but quality doesn't dictate audience consensus. Can legitimately bad movies have a big fanbase ? Yes, but not all movies with flaws are devoid of merit. People are not hung up on the lack of characterisation, because they're only vehicles for the audience to project themselves on. The people I talked to related to the situations and circumstances and that's what the movie was going for in the first place.

Clearly the execution was good enough that enough people felt a connection to the characters in this romance story.

I remember when Owarimonogatari season 2 reached #1 on MAL and tons of Kimi no Na wa fanboys went en masse rating Owari a 1/10 without seeing it just to keep KnNw at the top. Petty fans. What a joke of a website.

liked that you gave examples of ways to change the story instead of just criticizing it. Also completely agree with you on your point about montage sequences. Its just lazy writing IMO. They work in the moment but don't really create a lasting image in the viewer.

really liked your reviews! agree with not all your points, but most of them, even if i do really love to movie and cried like a baby, i appreciate someone talking about what could have been done better

I mean, the title is pretty clickbaity, but I guess that's what you need to do to get views. Better have a clickbaity title with a good video than a good video that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

As someone who unsurprisingly loves Kimi No Na Wa, I really appreciate you doing research and actually backing up your points. My personal critique of the film is that I don’t understand how drinking 3 year old sake made from the saliva of the girl you’re connected to means time travel.

This video is such a classic for me. Perfectly echoes my feelings towards it. Especially in regards to their personalities during the body swapping moments. They seem so out of character. Taki is just an ass for no reason, something that he never does outside of Mitsuha's body.

Yet Taki has a bruise on his cheek from a fight, as we are strongly implied. That Taki-as-Mitsuha would kick a desk to stop Mitsuha's bullies from badmouthing her, in an expression of the message "This is your final warning" does not seem in the slightest unbelievable to me.
