A few comments: 1. You are comparing Manchester to Tokyo, Seoul and Berlin, huge capital cities and buzzing metropolis’s. What did you expect? 2. Good point about the lack of parks in the city centre, this is my biggest gripe with Manchester. However you failed to mention that you can access the gorgeous Peak District national park from a 30 minute bus or train ride. If you live further out of the city centre, this nature is basically on your doorstep. 3. Not much to do? If you’re a tourist looking for a Ferris wheel then yeah good point, but as a resident there is more entertainment, culture, and sport options here than any other UK city except London. 4. God you are obsessed with Ferris wheels 5. You come across as lacking the motivation to do your own research on what’s available to do in this city. I’m sorry about that.

Born in Manchester and lived there for over 60 years. No parks in Centre? Agreed but that is because it was a 19th Century industrial city and all the central land was used for factories and housing. which left no space or money for parks for the workers. Boring? Yes if you have no interests that coincide with what the city - or anywhere else has to offer. Did you go out to meet people? Did you visit the museums, concert venues and galleries? Did you visit the tourism centre to see what is available? Perhaps you needed to get out of your comfort zone a bit? Everywhere in the world from the Sahara Desert to Antarctica can be interesting. Only people can be bored because maybe the themselves are what is really boring.

You missed out on exploring some of the areas of countryside and smaller towns in and around Lancashire/Yorkshire. The countryside is really breathtaking....

I am moving to Manchester in the next several months - and came across this video. Not going to argue content - these are his perceptions and thats cool; just going to say that nothing matches up with any of my research (future and current coworkers, various city walk throughs in VR, map searches, etc). There are many things I am excited to see when we get there - Castlefield, the Museum of Science and Industry, anal Street, Arndale, Piccadilly Gardens and the Alan Turing memorial in Sackville Garden, taking games at Etihad and Old Trafford. Lets not also forget the North Quarter. I won't be hiding in my room. All of that said, I am getting seriously creepy incel vibes here from the end of the video that makes me discount the whole thing.

As someone who's only ever lived here in Manchester, you're spot on. There's not really much to do unless you're into drinking culture, which i'm not.

The reason you hate it is because you don't socialise with people. That's what Manchester is all about. Also you're literally right next to the peak district - some of the best nature you can find in the country

Boring people find everything boring

Manchester is 1 and a half hours away from The Lake District! A unesco world heritage site! Did you go there?

As a person who grew up in Greater Manchester and Manchester was the big place to go, I only have nostalgia to prop up my rating of it. It's a bit of a crap hole because half of it is partying students and the other half is partying adults. The only part i like is Northern quarter & Ancoats which has a more chill and nerdy vibe. Lack of pedestrianised areas in city centres in England is awfulm makes it hard to walk and get anywhere.

Ok, first there's plenty going on in Manchester, you're just not looking for it. There's the Northern Quarter, the art house cinema, loads of museums. Too boring? Go to one of the many night clubs. Life gives the more you put into it. Yes it's hard to find walking in the city centre but guess what? The train station isn't far and that will get you to the penines in no time.

I had a similar experience there. I had a great first year there living in NQ but after a while it started to grate on me. The lack of parks as you say and just cosy pubs instead of bars. On one hand it’s a very fun city with the wealth of bars available but on the other a little dull

Daniel, if I was you, I’d move back to Berlin, get a simple office job or something, go on those walks you enjoy so much, get fit, and THEN re-enter the dating scene. I think it would be an incredibly fruitful venture.

Manchester is an idea. People move to Manchester because they have a distinct conception of what Manchester will be like. Manchester is excellent at self-promotion. I lived there for eight years. Unfortunately after six months reality will hit and you will realise it has nothing more to offer than most other UK cities. If you're hedonistic you'll have a fun time (for a while) but if you are person who wishes to experience life a little more fully, then Manchester will disappoint.

Fair and honest comments. Not easy to tell personal experience without the fear of others attacking you in the comment section. To people keep suggesting him to catch a train and go to another night club etc, he had just told you he had tried already. If you have been aboard each major city has several landmarks or characters. If you go to Edinburgh, London, the museums, the galleries, symphony hall, town halls, palaces, castles, street turn into markets regularly have interesting events on. It’s all relative, if you live in Bolton, Crewe for awhile, living in Manchester City centre is a dream come true.

I understand the whole thought process about being close to nature and stuff. But just because you have close access to greenery doesn't mean that your mental health will automatically improve. I can say this with experience myself. I lived in San Francisco, where I had quick access to Golden Gate Park and Glen Park. I also went to the beach very often. But the entire time I lived in San Francisco, I was at my lowest point mentally and emotionally. The way you describe your situation in Manchester was very similar to my experience in San Francisco. I live in Austin now. There is still nature here. There are more noticeable trees incorporated with the neighborhoods and the city, but I don't have quick access to nature the way I did with San Francisco. Here in Austin, it's car dominated and it's much much scarier for pedestrians. I mean, Austin and SF are like night and day when it comes to walkability. Yet, for whatever reason, I am better mentally and emotionally here in Austin. It's just an interesting thing that I thought I would point out. Not that I necessarily know what to make of it either. I just don't think that having access to nature and parks are a guarantee for mental well-being.

I was agreeing with you on the parks - Manchester even tried to pretend there were loads of green spaces by claiming spaces in Greater Manchester (not Manchester) as Manchester's, to try to win some competition, but the organisers saw right through that. However, you are being totally false when you say there's nothing good about the city. There are street entertainers, the largest Chinatown in the UK outside London, two libraries - one for quiet study, another where, on certain floors, you can play the piano or listen to others playing it (or other instruments on one of the floors), quirky little food places, Affleck's Palace which is great for those who want to shop somewhere different, and, in the daytime, with good weather, you could have a picnic in Piccadilly Gardens as a date, or maybe you could get a tram to somewhere nicer. And the museums and art galleries as you mentioned, a number of which are interactive. By the way, you obviously haven't explored just outside the city in the correct direction - walk towards Salford CENTRAL station (just on the border of Salford and Manchester), turn left after it, follow Chapel Street, and on the right is Peel Park (don't visit in the night, Salford is dodgy). Alternatively get a train to Salford Crescent station and the park is next to Salford University (just make sure you're not given a Manchester ticket as Salford is not in Manchester). Sure, there's not loads to do, and you do have to leave the city slightly to find a park, but to suggest there's nothing is nonsense.

‘I love going on walks and being healthy’ - Heaton Park is the largest municipal park in Europe. If you don’t try and actually discover the city you live in, maybe you shouldn’t give your opinions. You compare it to Tokyo, a city that is infamous for being a modern distopian vision of future cities, with such urban sprawl it makes LA look small. Again, from your video you simply do not understand or appreciate European cities. You say you were bored, Manchester has more giggs than any other city in England outside of London and is world renowned for its music scene. It has 2 universities filled with students that create a massive nightlife scene. It had 2 of the biggest football teams on the planet. If you were bored I would suggest that’s your issue, not the cities. All I’d say is I’m glad you’re leaving. Manchester is a welcoming city, but Mancunians won’t take pretenders or mugs. If you aren’t going to embrace what a city has to offer, perhaps best not to critique it.

It's true that UK dating is harder than Asia. But Manchester was a great place to date for me. The difference is I went out and talked to girls that I liked. All you have to do is go to the University and they are everywhere. Likewise there are loads of parks there as well. Sometimes the city center isn't the best place to live. Manchester is industrial feel to it. The centre is fast, built up. There are little places to sit and rest. I visit on day trip, soak in the busyness, museums etc. It has history, architect etc so its has a plenty if you look, not even that hard looking at that. Travelling out of the city then you have nature, hills. I would not live there personally, its a hard place. But visiting is ok.

Manchester sounds like where I live when it comes to dating. You make good points about the lack of a city park. It's definitely something to consider when moving somewhere.

I agree with the most of what the guy said here. Manchester is a really depressive place where not much is happening. Its raining here almost all the time while other places are warmer and sunnier at the same time as my friends send me pictures from London or Leeds or Cornwall. What can you do when its raining outside all the time, it ruins all your plans and staying indoors is not really good for menthal health. Thats propably why in Manchester people are mostly orientated in drinking or watching football in tv. What else can you do except get pissed and live football all the time. Also wherever you go in Manchester is like doomy and gloomy and there is a lot of places and street you just simply can be mugged, not mentioning the odour of urine. There is not much to see or do there. There are no true clubs where you could go dancing. The culture is to go and get drunk wherever it would be. If you invite your family or girlfriend there is shame to show them Manchester, because there is nothing really interesting. People in the streets are really weirdos and when you pass them you feel like you bought a ticket to the freak show. Its scarry sometimes to make a bad turn and spot some groups of drunken guys who could have knives and bad intentions. I guess thats a massive problem in the UK but there is a lot of freaks in Manchester especially. Its a sad post industrial city, second biggest in the UK and this is really shame to be here. I dont know how I survived 6 years here but I am very very happy that soon I am moving out as well. Manchester is a dead end, place with no future. I hate living here.

Agreed about the centre of Manchester and lack of a decent park. Piccadilly Gardens used to offer some relief 20 years ago. I'm a tram fan so love the Manchester trams, but they are high floor, so ugly platforms have destroyed Piccadilly Gardens and also St Peter's Square.

No he's wrong, there is tones to do. The arts, dance classes, martial arts, lovely restaurants/pubs, library, you can live in a skyscraper for £1000 pm, there's local gyms which do badminton, yoga etc. You don't have a park, but you've got the canals, which are nicer. You can go on a day trip to a lot of northern cities very easily and cheaply. There is crazy golf 10 minutes from his house if he didn't want to go the one of the really close bars. This man is just very depressed because he didn't leave his house.

I think your main fail is that you didn’t spot the tram system and didn’t buy a tram ticket. Manchester is surrounded by nothing but parks and places to walk. I’m sorry that you didn’t ever manage to leave Betham Tower and show your girl a good time. 😂😂😂

Your comparing capital city levels of investment to a city that's a city in a nation (Great Britain) when equivalent to Germany, Japan and South Korea has three capitals the government focuses on London, Edinburgh and Cardiff. As someone from Manchester with zero personality my experience with dating was instead of trying to force your own self confidence and humor try to tailor to the personality the first date. The Comedy Story, The Frog and Bucket, Hot Water Comedy or Murder Inc. If they are more into proper theatre performances starting the date at Salfords The Lowery, Palace Theatre, Opra House, Royal Exchange gives a very good build up of topics before going to eat. If they are more into gaming NQ64, Pixel, Fab Cafe for a few drinks and games. Taking some time to just enjoy nature Fletcher moss Park is like a 20- 30 minute travel from the City Centre, The peak district, are rather quick travels with so many hour and half travel spots by train and a quick taxi ride to get to for a weekend get away.

I'm going to have to cancel my lifelong dream vacation to Manchester now.

To viewers unfamiliar with Manchester, the very centre of the city lacks proper parks due to it being the birthplace of the industrial revolution, but it is blessed with amazing parkland just outside the centre reachable on the trams (eg Heaton Park, Chorlton and Sale Water Parks, Kersal Wetlands, Drinkwater Park and many more) - and it is surrounded by fantastically stunning countryside which can be reached in a very short train journey. Also, I'm so surprised that you found the city boring - there is an infinite amount of things to do every day of the week, it's the most multicultural place in the UK outside London, and you can find groups of people interested in virtually any hobby/sport/interest that you could think of. It's never going to compete with megacities like Tokyo, but for its size, Manchester is fantastic and has more going on than most cities of its size. It's not perfect - the inequality is very bad, homelessness is very visible, the streets are often dirty and the air is polluted - but in my opinion it's a great place to live as long as you make an effort to make the most of the things the city has to offer.

Sounds like your problem with Manchester was that the girls gave you a 5.6 out of 10. Like you I've lived in many cities and at the end of the day Manchester is the 2nd city of the 5th biggest economy in the world. Theres lots to see and do and its very interesting and gets 1 million tourists a year . As for greenery, you chose to live in the city center whilst most of the greenery is in the suburbs. Very few city centers are green, especially those that lead the industrial revolution.

I like the honest review and all the elements you’ve touched upon are really focusing on quality of living, so it’s not the usual ‘bland’ review that considers pros and cons based on how many restaurants there are :)

But obviouslt you havent lived in every city in England neither have you been at every place in Rotterdam. I live near Rotterdam and actually I really think I live in the best country of the world in the practical sense for sure. I know my country very well. I have been to many other countries as well.
