When someone of intellectual means, respectable and well loved with their circle converts .... it begs a question to thise who havent. The ones landed with the question are asked what am I doing wrong? What don't I understand? Am I being self-decieved? ... but rather most people will find that striking aporia unpalatable and then ask instead - whats wrong with the convert?
@lewkbauer
@lewkbauer 8 ай бұрын
@@benjaminlquinlan8702 well said. I appreciate that thought process. I have been born and raised Church of Christ. I love the people. We mean well. The problem that I have been struggling with is that everything we learn is historical and intellectual. Feelings are generally uncomfortable, icky things and so we tend to ere on the side of caution and be more business/logic like. It does feel legalistic and Pharisee-esque. The Bible is infinite in its depth. However, I do feel like I am missing context to several things though because of sola scriptura. For instance, we have no methodology for dealing with evil spirits and demons. I like to help people, so how do I deal with someone who is demon possessed? Meditation? I want to know what the biblical authors specifically meant by that. And here the Catholic Church has answers. Y’all have several forms of meditation! I’m not ready to convert. But it is hard to deny that y’all have been thinking this through for quite a bit longer than we have. If I continue to have lackluster answers then I am sure my walk will continue to a different church. Will it be the Catholic Church? I’ve not found too much that I have issues with. But due to the nature of my entanglement with my church, I have to be prepared to answer all of the hard questions.

@@lewkbauerI came to faith in a Calvinist denomination. The criticism of the Catholic Church was always its doctrines of Mary or the Pope and “legalism”. Now, we’re in a less Calvinistic congregation and the longer I’m there, the more it’s clear the Protestant Church suffers from a vacuum on clear teaching. I find the structure and long history of the Orthodox and Catholic Churches immensely helpful

@@MekMalazan sorry but no please reread and note the word usage of "I think" vs "I know" and "probably" rather than " it is certain." I was an English major. Words matter. By your logic you are sinning as well accusing me of calumny, of all things. I'm not judging this man as you are me. I'm not saying he is sinning as you are me. And besides, acting as a character you play, is not acting, it's acting. It's not sinning. People can portray themselves differently to different people. It does not make them liars, perhaps maybe somewhat disingenuous. Words and their meanings matter and distinguishing between similar words is called nuance. BUT, you are entitled to your opinion, as I am entitled to mine. In regards to sin, in this case, I would defer to my priest if I need correcting. Thanks

My grandparents owned a bakery in a village in Germany. In the 1950ies, the people living there were still living like in the 19th century. My grandmother told me that she would meet kinds of people that you just don't meet today anymore. One particular customer she told me about was an old man that had lost all of his teeth but one. On that tooth, he would hang his pipe with a thread and so every time he talked, the pipe would bounce up and down. I was reminded of this anecdote while listening to the stream.

All of the evidence continually points away from any proposed religion so short of a personal experience I don't see how I could ever be converted. I watch these types of shows to hear the arguments and reasons for people's beliefs but so far they're all terrible. At this point if God exists and wants me to believe, he's going to have to show up personally. If that is too much to ask then unfortunately he has set me up for failure.

@Pints With Aquinas, don't take for granted what Dr Harrelson is saying about southeastern Ky. He's dead on. Theres a protestant church on every corner... but Catholic churches are few and far between. I too live in southeastern Kentucky... and I'm in the process of trying to cut myself a path to the Catholic Church. It has been difficult. There's one Catholic church in my area, and I want to start RCIA as quickly as possible. I've devoured basically everything Catholic I can find on youtube, and I thank God for channels like this, people like Dr Taylor Marshall, and also Exorcist priests I've found on youtube like Fr Carlos Martins, Bishop James Long, Fr Vince Lampert, Msgr. Stephen Rossetti, Fr Dan Reehil, etc. Unfortunately I don't quite have the support Dr Harrelson does, , I'm kind of more on my own. Like Dr Harrelson I grew up in the Church of God. Unlike him, I ended up becoming disillusioned with it, because unlike most, I actually started to study the scriptures. What I found in them, didn't really fit with much of what I was hearing from behind Church of God pulpits. I too wanted more... and when I began to find all these Catholics on youtube, I QUICKLY began to understand that all of the horrible things I had heard about Catholicism all my life, was all WRONG, and all came from a place of fear and ignorance. Sadly, WILLFULL ignorance. I don't mean that in a disrespectful sense... but rather from the literal sense... They just don't know what they don't know. My mother has lost her mind after I told her I wanted to become Catholic. Her exact words were "You are WAY out in left field now"... My response was, No Mom, I think maybe the problem is that you guys have been way out in left field for far too long. As I began to learn about the Catholic church from actual Catholics, they knocked down every single thing that the Protestantism had taught us about Catholicism, one by one, and things suddenly began to make SO much sense. I thank God for people like Matt... Who is bringing the truth of the church to those of us who never had the opportunity to learn it. So, Thank you kind sir! :)

I became Catholic in 2015 (former pentecostal pastor and missionary) and my wife has yet to follow me into the church- very difficult in the early days. My family did not agree with my conversion as well. Years later they still do not prefer it, but they understand that I want to follow Christ and hopefully see a man who is true Christ and his convictions. Prayers for you and your family.

Thankfully my father’s mother was a woman of gentleness & reason, helping to reunite father & son (it was helpful that he adored my mother, who was Catholic from Polish immigrants. My grandfather had thought my mother would eventually convert, but couldn’t deny that she was anything like the anti-Catholic propaganda that saturated the south due to the KKk ).
