I've been getting this question a lot, so here's my answer. Plus building the rabbit hutch in the English cottage.
Gopher Hawk: amzn.to/3GPswiw
---------------------------------------------
Hi I'm Brian with Next Level Homestead. If this is your first time here... welcome! I'm glad you're here! If you're a longtime friend, welcome back!!
For most of my life I was a city boy, gardening in the suburbs. I was the first generation in my family to not grow up on a farm and somehow it was still there inside me. So now my wife Emilie, son Noah and I have moved to a small farm (at least it will be) and we're documenting our journey on this channel. Building gardens and chicken coops, buying a dairy cow and who knows what else lies in store. But we can't wait to take you with us!
(The link above is an affiliate link. If you purchase through our links we'll receive a small commission that helps support our channel, but the price remains the same, or better for you!)

Put an expandable plastic wrist keychain on the spigot. When you turn it on, put the keychain on your wrist. It will remind you to go back and shut spigot off and put keychain back on the spigot. (I saw this tip on Cog Hill Farm channel)

You could have a cracked pipe or a blown irrigation part. I got that notice and it was a spray irrigation and the riser had broken off down where it connected to the pvc. You'll need to run the irrigation to check each and every (ugh) sprayer. Edited to add: you can feed the rabbits the Orchard grass, but not the Alfalfa grass (except in extremely limited amounts). My sweet lop (RIP) ate Timothy Hay and had play dates with the guinea pigs (also RIP). I am amazed at how much you've gotten/are getting done. No project gets completed without at least 32 trips to the Big Box Store. Happy Holidays!

What a touching moment with you and Daisy, it made my heart swell and tears of happiness for the two of you, she loves being rubbed and scratched, that's a plus! Hum! Wonder how Bella is getting out? We had rabbits in Northern Nev. and had to install a small Air Conditioning Unit to keep them, as it gets terribly hot there and in the winter no problem, they love the cold. Can't wait to see the finished rabbit hutch. I raised rabbits when I was a kid 71 yrs ago, the hutch was 2 stories high and that made room to raise more. I took orders from neighbors for fresh rabbit and had to do the whole thing by myself. Those were the days! Blessings on your health and well being as well as your family! Keep the great videos coming! Looking forward to the next one!

Keep her on the lead. We had dogs, along the way that just barreled right through the underground electric dog barrier. They got shocked, didn’t matter, they wanted to chase something more, probably deer. Lost two dogs to the highway because of that. Lesson learned, fence put in, dogs safe.

1500 gallons is 200 cubic feet! That would be a 20×10 foot area a foot deep. You should be able to find that! Other things that I'd check: the water heater (if outdoors, so you wouldn't see leaking), a water softener running unnecessary recharge cycles, a toilet in "perma-flush" mode. That much water in 8 hours is only about 3 gallons a minute, so it doesn't have to be a "gusher". If you can, look at the water meter to see if it shows water flowing. If so, turn off everything you can and recheck. Now it should show nothing flowing. If not, you might need "professional" help to track it down. (Your proactive water utility might even be able to help with investigating.)

That exact thing happened to me a few months ago. Water bill has been pretty consistent for months throught out the very hot summer in the low desert, about $117. per month. THEN i got a bill for almost $600.00. In two weeks time Enough water to fill 4 inground swimming pools. There is no place on my property that was wet enough to hold that much water. And my septic tank couldn't that much water either. So where did the eater go? Fought the water company and lost anyway. This seems to be a scheme water companies are using to rip us off out here in the Southwest. Water bill is normal once again. The meter was replaced after that mess

Cog Hill Farm had the same problem of forgetting to shut the water off when doing morning and evening chores. So, Brooke the wife bought Jason, her husband, elastic stretch bracelets to put on each Spigot. When he turns the water on, he puts the bracelet on his wrist. When he is done, he turns the water off and puts the bracelet back on the spigot. It works like a charm.

Thanks for another great video, Brian. You pack so much into a short time, but I could watch for hours if that were possible! I find it’s the every-day-ness of your activities that are so comforting in this topsy-turvy world we live in. LOVED your painting; laughed at Bella running from Daisy, and the story of Daisy’s tantrum. Plus picked up a few tips along the way. I know nothing about rabbits except that their poo can be used “green” for fertilizer. (There are plenty of wild ones in my area.) Feel free to let your ADHD kick in and forget to make short videos! ♥️

Think you can guarantee Bella got out under the gate. That’s plenty of room for her. Dogs can get quite flat. I found one in the street and went to rescue, but it run to a yard and squeezed under a fence. If I didn’t see it I’d think it way too small an opening. (I knocked on their door and yes, it was their dog.) Things are just humming along at the homestead. Can’t wait to see the hutch. I look forward to your videos and seeing what Bella and Daisy are up to. 😁

Rabbits don't usually get along until they have been bonded. You don't just want to put them together. You will want to put a fence in between the two of them until they get used to each other. You probably have a local rabbit rescue that you can contact and I'm sure they'll be happy to tell you the exact process to use. If you were to just put them together they fight viciously and then it's very hard to Bond them once they've had a bad fight

Another lovely video. I look forward to seeing how your rabbit hutch will turn out and to see your rabbits. I grew up In Europe, where the climate is similar to Canada. My parents used to keep rabbits in a DIY hutch. It had double walls, with fiberglass insulation in between. In the winter, the door was covered with a burlap as added protection against cold. The emphasis was on keeping the rabbits from freezing to death. My job was to feed them every morning before school and to clean their cages. When it was time to skin a rabbit, I had to hold the rabbit by its hind feet, while my mom masterfully "undressed" it from its fur coat. That part was okay, until my mom started to empty out the contents of the belly. That's when I really felt like plugging my nose, but I couldn't, since I was still holding the two feet. LOL. As a reward, I got to keep the bit of money that I got from the furrier. What do you do with your rabbit furs?

Nice painting Brian, I love turtles so much. On the water leak, surely that much in 8 hours would be obvious somewhere? It would be far more than the little wet patch in Daisy's corral. Potentially it could be in your watering system. If you are able to turn off different sections, take water meter readings every few hours. If an electronic meter, could even be the meter I guess. Good luck. Annoying when new things get on the 'to do' list.

The pens share a fence so the chicken run has to have hardware cloth and cement around the parameters. We have raccoons, opossums, stray dogs and coyotes. We have to cover the chicken run because of owls and hawks. Love your videos and learning about homesteading and gardening. There is always something new to learn.

I wanted to tell you about the hoya plant for your covered patio. The hoya is an extremely vigorous climber and I promise you, you will love it. It also propagates easily in water. As for the pothos you have in the patio area, could be a big disappointment because the longer the vine grows, the fewer leaves you will get on the vine. The reason for this is because the plant will put most of its energy into feeding the vine thus not producing leaves. If you ever noticed a pothos plant with long vines, you will see the plant is basically bald on top.

Are you getting rabbits to breed and sell or to eat? Did you check all your toilets for the water usage? A toilet that continues to run will go through that much water pretty quickly. Sometimes they can be quiet enough that other household noises can cover the sound. Especially if it’s a guest bathroom that isn’t used often. Can pretty much bet that’s where Bella got out. It’s amazing how even a large dog can wiggle through a space that size. We used to have a large neighbor dog who would crawl under the fence to play with our toy poodle. 😂🤣

I also often forget to turn off my hose bib so I decided to add manual timers (no batteries or power required) to each of my hose bibs. That way at least they only run for so many minutes if I forget to shut them off. I have a well and so my shutoffs on my hoses can drip/leak over time from hard water deposits. This is the timer I have been using: Orbit 62034 Mechanical Watering Hose Timer (I could not find the share icon on Amazon for some reason 🤦🏼‍♀️) BTW they are on sale right now too! We have had leaks in our barn and pastures! During the winter the cows come back to the barns and surrounding area so we do turn off the pasture waters. Leaks are expensive 😢

Just so you know, now you are known as Daisy's dad's channel in our house. Lol. We enjoy how real you are and love seeing the homestead take shape. Looking forward to the next episode.

In Florida, we have major water leaks in underground copper pipes. This has caused very major expensive re-pipes through home attics. What causes this is highly debated. Chemicals in the water is my bet.

Thank you for your gopher hawk lesson. I have one trap and a ton gophers ugh. I just ordered more traps and it’s on. I didn’t really know exactly how to use them and now I do. 😊

Brian, I wish you could talk to other cattle owners about Daisy being by herself. Since cows and horses are herd animals, it is so sad to see a horse in a field with no other horses within sight. That is not a happy animal. I imagine a cow is not much different. The seller may have said it was ok for Daisy to be alone because he was trying to sell you that one calf because it was all you wanted. Just a thought . . .

I love your long videos. I can’t believe how much you get accomplished in a day….and the painting is beautiful. You have so much talent - and energy, I might add. The negative thing in this video is you talking about your afflictions. The talent you have, in so many ways, far outweighs your ADD. I am of the mind that everyone has a touch of it in some area so for anyone to make you think you’re less of a person because of it is not 26:40 productive. I look forward to another long video. You, Daisy and Bella seem like family. 💙

Jason at Coghill farm puts one of those scruchy keychains around the spigots, puts it on his wrist when he leaves was running then we he sees it on his wrist it reminds him to go back and shut it off. He takes the scrunchy off his wrist and puts it back on the spigot for next use. Just a tip ❤

I am surprised you dont have a camera system looking at the pasture. Would help find out any issues you may have when you aren't around to monitor Bella. As for your gopher issue.. You should look into lining your fence line with a DeepRoot tree root barrier. Not only are you keeping gophers out but you can direct roots to not damage the fence line and/or road.
