Hey Bria, fellow Saia city driver here welcome to the team! I've been with Saia for over 12 years, it's a good company to work for imo. LTL has its own set of challenges and it may take some time to adjust, but once you do it's like riding a bike. If city life doesn't suit you, you can always transfer to linehaul. All our linehaul drivers at my terminal make over $100k but they do work nights. I avg about $88k in the city at about 50 hrs a week and off every weekend. Best of luck to you, looking forward to your further adventures!

Purely my own personal opinion. There's no way I'd go through the hard ships involved in getting a Class A CDL to work for $20-28/hr with all the rules and regulations Amazon has for their freight partners. Not even including the regulations within the trucking industry itself. I've had my CDL for years and out of curiosity, I did some homework on the AFPs in my area aswell as elsewhere. Come to find out, those drivers are immensely underpaid for what's expected of them. Top it off, they don't pay for experienced drivers. They tend to appeal to and pay people brand new to the business who don't know any better, no offense to you. Regardless if you're dropping and hooking or throwing cases (food service), it takes a special kind of person to do this job and to do it for an extended period of time. Right now, with the way things are moving I'd recommend getting your hazmat, tanker and doubles endorsements to set you apart from the competition because that's where the money is.

I do LTL local P&D as well. I got very lucky and got this job right out of trucking school. Basically I jumped in the deep end of the pool right off the bat, so it's been stressful, but I drove with other drivers for the first four weeks and they taught me a lot. I've been doing it 4 months now, and have learned so much in that 4 months that I feel like I probably have the skills of an average 2 year experience OTR driver. One piece of advice I can give is that when you have a bunch of stops in a day and it seems overwhelming, just take it one step at a time and focus on the current stop. Especially when while you're driving on tight roads and backing in tight spots, make sure that you're 100% focused in the moment. Also, getting phone numbers of some more experienced drivers at your company can be helpful. I have drivers who I can call if I am unsure about the best way to get to a place I've never been to. Even if you have a good Trucking GPS, you can't always trust it. Sometimes they will steer you wrong..

Bria Trucking Good Luck to You. It is understandable why You would leave Amazon and You have a great reason. Your Experience is the key to everything, so of course having all of your endorsements it makes perfect sense that You would gain more experience and make more money. I am sure at Saia You will start out pulling doubles and using your tanker and Haz Mat endorsement, that is going to be great experience for any job. Frankly, I love pulling and breaking doubles and wish more companies used them but You have shown that You have what it takes to be a commercial driver, SO Good, Take It Easy and be safe and never let anybody RUSH YOU.

Yes, I was very nervous. Especially since I had learned on a manual transmission. It took me a good 3-4 days in the school to get over my fear of driving the truck. My guess is you prolly have a better start-finish time and Im sure you will not have to drive as many miles per day at Saia. And maybe those things matter to you....for now. I will say a couple of things. Many compaines today do not want drivers that have had more than 3-4 jobs in 5 years time, for example. So be careful not to switch jobs too often. By my count you're already on your third company (which is not at all unusual) It can come back to bite you. Saia is a huge company and hopefully they will treat you well and and treat you with respect. But if they don't, there's alwasy AMZN. PS. ...i liked the mirror/windshield metaphor. cute.
