You can get maternity benefits in contract jobs as well especially EI during the maternity leave period. Whenever they are layoffs the contractors are the last ones to get laid off as they have no obligations to the employer. The full-time employees are unfortunately laid off first as they are owed severance and higher payouts depending on how long they have been with the company. Recently, wealth -simple laid 169 people in Canada; all of them were full-time, not contractors.

Think you are confusing contract work and being self-employed/freelancing and accepting various contracts. There are a lot of people working in an office for an employer just like full-time job on a contract basis so without benefits.
