The Accounting Struggle

4 жыл бұрын

Oh Hey Guys- Welcome Back!!!
I have spoken briefly on why I decided to leave public accounting in other posts, but never in great detail. Many of my other blog posts speak to the public accounting experience, so I am often asked why I decided to leave public accounting.
In today's post I discuss what lead to my decision to expand my accounting career beyond the public accounting experience.
To be clear, this is based entirely on my own experience and is in no way meant to discourage anyone from pursing a career in public accounting. I strongly believe that getting public accounting experience is something that every accountant will benefit from in ways beyond resume boosting. If you are just getting started in your accounting journey and you are trying to decide which career path makes sense, you should find this video to be insightful.
I speak on work-life balance in another post and the role it played in my decision to leave public accounting. For more on what you can expect from in public accounting, check out this previous post.

Great video! I am in public accounting now (3 busy seasons in audit) but I can relate to what you mentioned in your vid about the hours, not having that sense of fulfillment and also how your personality was affected during busy season. It's definitely a great start to any accounting career and we all know when its time to leave. Keep it up! :)

Thanks for this video. I too am a nontraditional student. I was the same age as my managers as I graduated with my BS 10 years after my HS graduation. I started at a BIg 4 already married with 2 children. It was they hardest year of my life. Missing out on stuff with my husband and kids. I only stayed a year and knew that it wasnt for me. I left 1/2020 right before busy season bc mentally I just could not handle it. I am now working in an industry position I enjoy. I havent passed the CPA yet but plan to start studying again next month. So glad I found you.

Thank you for sharing Jasmine. I don’t have babies yet but I knew I wouldn’t be able to be the type of mom I always wanted to be working in public. It’s a difficult and unfair reality we have to face but it is what it is. I’m happy to hear you have found a more suitable role ✨

Every word in this video is the truth, period point blank lol. You are signing up for a new lifestyle when you go into public accounting. Not only do you think about pay, job roles, etc, you think about what type of life you want to live. Especially coming out of college into public is a big change. I am speaking from the audit perspective as well, no matter which one you choose, it's the same. It's easy to say what you want to do *before* graduating and going into it, but once you actually start, it will hit you. It's definitely a good experience, and you should try it if you get the opportunity to get your own experience, because it's different for everyone.

Thank you for this video! It’s three years ago that you made this. I came across this now. I’m also in tax, and I love the challenge. But I have felt that the stress of other people has been wearing on me. This video was spot on. I don’t like the WLB but I’m thinking of taking CPA still (just because it’s been my goal for a long time) and maybe going into government or another accounting field that would allow me a proper WLB. Accounting isn’t my passion by any means but I do like it and I like learning and I pick up things quickly but my anxieties and stress levels are at an all time high.

Thank you for sharing your story. That is how I’m currently feeling. I don’t see public accounting as my entire life and even if you try to put your foot down, they still don’t care. I wish firms would stop promoting work life balance during recruitment since that’s not the reality.

Yeah the work life balance part is kind of scammy lol. I think they should just call it work life flexibility, meaning you can work while your are doing personal life things like vacationing.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, I feel like you're reading my thoughts. Bit of background info; I'm a 1 1/2 years old tax accountant, and started in January 2019. I hear that's been one of the toughest tax years with all the new reform. Can't say I agree since it felt hard because it was my first year doing any kind of tax accounting. I too wasn't your traditional college student and therefore not your typically accountant. I served over 4 years active in the military, 4 years active and 1 year active in my 6 year enlistment with the National Guard. Because of that, I started college as a late bloomer and therefore started my career later in life then the average accountant. The long hours where never an issue especially since I've worked long hours before overseas in a cambat zone. There is no time off/weekends. At least not at the begining statges of war time where your unit is responsible for setting up part of infrastructure. FYI, I'm not trying to brag, "one-up" anyone, or anything like that; this is how it was for me anyways. I was also married for several years as well, and never saw being a mom as part of my life. I love the freedom my husband and i have as just a couple, not saying that being a parent is necessarily restrictive. I'm not getting younger, and my husband and I recently made the decision to have a child come 2021. It's obvious that this is a major life changing decision, but it also had an unexpected impact on my carrer goals in terms continuing to pursue a tax accounting career. Im absolutely not saying that you cant be tax/audit accountant and a new mom; there are plenty of mothers who have successfully advanced their careers in tax accounting simultaneously. But one of my managers was sharing a personal story, and the one thing that hit close to home is when she said that her 7 yr old daughter was asking her if they can do x,y,z for summer; and when she responded that she couldn't because she had a tax deadline, her daught said "you always have deadlines". Much like you The Accounting Struggle, my life goals no longer align with my current career situation. When things finally start to look better in terms of the economy/coronavirus I plan to make that change. Thanks you so much for sharing your insight, experience, and thoughts. I feels good to know that I'm not the only one that's insightfully queationed public accounting as a career. However, I was so, so, so excited to come in every day durring my first entire year. And lately I dread every Monday/day. I get anxiety on Sunday thinking about going in to work. That's one reason I know thats its time for a change. Another reason is, like you said The Accounting Struggle, the job its self is not fulfilling anymore. I'm not giving up accounting, just the type. I personally would like a shot at government accounting. By the way what are you doing know? For whom are you working? How have you liked it so far? What kind of responsibilities do you have? What tax accounting concepts have helped you with said responsibilities?

I'm thinking about going into public accounting next year as a career switch. I currently work in compliance, but have an accounting degree that I would like to really utilize. However, I am hesitating because I am 35! lol...and I see that many entry level public accounting jobs hire a majority of people straight out of college hence they would be a lot younger. In your experience, have you come across people that are not traditional starting off in public accounting at an later age? My happy hour days were over a looonnngg time ago..lolol
@TheAccountingStruggle
@TheAccountingStruggle 4 жыл бұрын
Don't Touch My Locs I cant say that I ran into too many folks around my age in the same roles. I was often older than the seniors and some of the managers. At large, public accounting works well for those who are in that stage of life right out of college. I do see more variety in industry roles. I think that’s because of the practicality.

The hardest part is that you simply won’t know what you’re doing and there aren’t textbook notes to just reference. Everything in application is more unique and won’t always fit the textbook rules. You just have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable 😣

I am currently in my second year of college studying accounting and i have not had an internship yet. My question is for public accounting do they train you or do they give you work and expect you to understand what to do?
@TheAccountingStruggle
@TheAccountingStruggle 3 жыл бұрын
Both lol. The training is them giving you work and letting you take a stab at it, then you use the review notes they give you to improve. It’s an effective way to learn but it hurts the ego

I really wish the mantra of doing something you love for work is the only way to go. Work is work. You need to find a good paying job so you can love comfortably and have all the fun doing what you love at home. This garbage advice is making a lot of people pick trash majors that don't have great job outlook or pay and then they call college a scam.
