The ONLY reason why I stayed for 3 years was because It would look really great on my resumé and set me up for the future. I was so anxious and overwhelmed at times that I would take "breathers" in the staircases.

Read this recently that if your company requires you to work late hours and on weekends , it's the company that is broken. Glad you are out of it and realised it early on. Balance is key.

This resonates to me so much. I was in a similar boat as yours, joined PwC as an intern and (finally) left as a senior in December lol. While I could not refute the fact that I landed on my current (amazing) job because of the Big 4 name in my CV, I still have the anxiety and depression developed from my years in audit. I remember crying in the bathroom from all the stress and the expectations of managers and clients, then had to put on a smile when I walk out to face my team. While I met a lot of amazing people and will miss late nights with them, the other experiences left a bad taste in my mouth. High five for surviving audit!

I'm not in audit but in tax. Just for 7 months. Definitely can relate to you. Once I feel no value to work in this field, I always wanted to resign.

Everything you described is exactly the same as what I went through during my 4 year stay from 2015 to 2019 in PWC. I think it is the way of the firm, with few exceptions.

Manager at Deloitte Canada. It absolutely adds no value, the work is not analytical and even at manager level we aren't really given the chance to advise on clients other than audit/accounting related issues which the client do not care.

I am on my first week in one of the big 4, still on the training process and the training already gave me anxiety and depression. Oh no, how can I survive this firm.. my contract says that I should not resign unless I had a year of service in the firm... And that adds to my depression, like I never thought that I am too weak to be in this firm 😔

Hello :)). Very nice Vid. I am looking to study masters in accounting for 2 years and enter one of the big4 so i can climb up the ladder in the accounting world. However, I am currently 28 with health related job background. Would you say my age could act as a barrier to land a job as a graduate and climb up the ladder?? Also, would you say accounting is a job that you have to have a natural talent in it? (eg. like music and sports). Or is it more of experience and people skill?? Thank you :)

There are a number of inaccuracies that anyone with rounded Big 4 experience would identify - it seems you didn’t have enough actual opportunities at the firm or you wouldn’t say all the work was so easy. Also, to say that you saw no value in the work makes you sound very naive and unaware of what the job actually accomplishes. Don’t get me wrong, audit is a tough gig (I myself was in audit for 5 yrs based in NYC), but you should really think about the things you say on a public forum before posting and drawing criticism (my real concern is that you provide a false picture of what PwC is and divert students that may actually like the job)

my take based on working in consulting for 7 years. pros; you get great exposure to many different companies / sectors. you learn and develop lots of skills including analysis and dealing with clients. cons; its a bit of a pyramid scheme, where you are told that if you work to death, sacrifice personal life, in some instances (tell the small lies to win bids), and put up with some of the toxic environment with backstabbing colleagues, favouritism (its run by partners, and the partners are like little kings and queens, and if they like you you rise if not, no chance). you can feel like a sellable resource, when the resourcing teams try and sell you for jobs (they act almost like pimps i felt just selling me to jobs sometimes without even asking me). for some its a great life, and it suits their personality and temperament. but i got tired of being sold to different clients as the 'expert' on something i knew little about, just because i was on the bench. i also got tired of being under pressure to deliver to unexpected deadlines that the partner had promised, working with lots of juniors who were from disparate backgrounds, emotional states, training and personal goals, to deliver something that was of high quality. sometimes there was no respect from the juniors to those below partners, as they did not see you as important in their career growth. so if you were in the middle between grad and partner, you sometimes got no respect from those above, nor from those below. but again its is very team dependant. if you are in a good team it can really be great. but most people did not want to kill themselves to be partner, and were looking to leave and join a firm in industry as a 'head of' type role.

I am planning to quit as well, I am not recent graduate and have enough experience to get other job that is more realistic with expectations and money is not so great at Pwc since this company pays less than others.
