@spinningnumbers6 жыл бұрын
they're quite simple really, but I'm still amazed by the people who think they can stay in the outside lane all the way around and leave on the forth exit! Then start waving their fist at you!! The only advise I'd give is to show the examiner that you're aware of the traffic around you (use your mirrors a lot) and especially the traffic that's waiting to come onto the roundabout. Make it obvious you've got an eye on the entry points and you're aware of the potential hazard. (Big fail area). Good luck George, I'm sure you'll be fine. Look at some of the people who've passed.....you can't be as bad as them can you?
@crazyoncoffee6 жыл бұрын
michael sharp technically you can do that! I don’t think there’s anything in the Highway Code preventing you from staying in the outside lane in a technical sense, it’s just bad etiquette.
@spinningnumbers6 жыл бұрын
if you do it on your test you will fail and more than likely there will be a roundabout on your driving test route. There are highway code rules regarding roundabouts that you'll need to know. Part of the test is negotiating the proper lane when approaching the roundabout so that you go onto the roundabout in the proper lane depending on whether you're turning left, going forward or turning right. Get it wrong and you will fail your driving test. Taking your test won't come down to etiquette. You better get it right.

Eek you’re not supposed to go around a roundabout in the outside lane like you did (all the way around) You might’ve blocked someone’s exit off. If you’re going all the way around you use the inside lane

spiral roundabout - what's that?
@Cheezsoup6 жыл бұрын
@ dopiaza2006 Spiral roundabouts are sometimes called Gyratories. Basically they are roundabouts that have lanes on them, which of these lanes you take depends on where you want to exit the roundabout. These lanes spiral out from the middle of the roundabout. So even if you started as far right as you could by the time you get to the third or fourth exit your lane would now be totally left, and without changing lanes (dodgy if the roundabout is at all busy) you have to leave the roundabout (and potentialy drive the wrong way untill you can SAFELY get back ontoi the proper route). See pic :- d2f0ora2gkri0g.cloudfront.net/live226906_spiraldiagram.jpg note how the lane you would be in "spirals" out from the centre Here is a KZfaq video of how to drive around them. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLShdtZotprWdGQ.html
@georgeknowles87626 жыл бұрын
There's usually no problem on roundabouts when there's just locals using them. The problem is that some of them (the roundabouts, not the locals!) have unusual approaches, lane configurations, and exits. Locals know this, but strangers can get confused. I can count three such roundabouts on the same road within one mile where I live. Some people also drive far too quickly on roundabouts and get upset when other drivers try to filter in. That defeats the whole purpose of roundabouts, which is to improve traffic flow. I have occasionally been "hooted" on roundabouts for driving at what was obviously perceived as being too low a speed. Simple solution, use a little courtesy on roundabouts. If you're a Londoner, look up "courtesy" in the dictionary.

They've become less common over the years.

British roundabouts always reminds my of a passage from one of Douglas Adams books: “He had extracted himself from the Cambridge one-way system by the usual method, which involved going round and round it faster and faster until he achieved a sort of escape velocity and flew off at a tangent in a random direction, which he was now trying to identify and correct for.”

If you want to have some real excitement or heart stopping moments, set your satnav to fastest route whilst in countryside areas. It will take you down the narrowest roads and lanes you will ever see, locals coming at you at 50 mph or more with nowhere to go but the ditch. One for the bucket list that's for sure! . Also some of our roundabouts do need traffic lights as you will take your life in your hands trying to get onto one during rush hour and then there's the pot holes! Nicest place I have driven recently was North Wales last September (2017) Very well kept. In contrast somewhere like the Cotswolds ( which you would think with all the income would keep it's roads in good condition) were some of the worst I have driven on . Cities and towns in UK are no go now for driving unless you have to, but we still have some wonderful drives through what's left of the spaces between .

Not so. I can quite correctly take the inside lane at a 4 junction roundabout and then take the 2nd exit i.e. straight ahead. I recognised that main road, the A505 with the sneaky speed cameras. Coming up to that roundabout one evening I witnessed one of nature's wonders, of one of those mass starling bird flocks in the sky above it, all wheeling around in unison. Marvelous; then they all dived down into the spinney of trees growing on the roundabout to roost for the night. And yes, do take notice what many others are telling you about roundabout lane discipline. Being in the wrong position is especially dangerous if you have motorcycles around you. However, there's no law to say you can't drive round and around on the inside lane all day long.

I like your remark about what happens if you miss your exit from a roundabout. I've done it more than once over my driving life. Even once with a 40 foot articulated rig. The only time it makes sense to put traffic lights on a roundabout is at motorway/A road interchanges where you would end up with traffic queued up for miles on the motorway during rush hour because the traffic on the A road wouldn't give traffic coming off the motorway a chance to move.

Just thought I'd mention that if there's a dotted line down the middle of a country lane, it means that there is room to pass car to car (but not always trucks) but if that dotted line vanishes, it means proceed with care as the road has just become narrower. I'm a PCV Instructor here in England. (rule 223 of the Highway Code say's, Give way to buses pulling out from Bus Stops) just thought I'd add that for everyone's benefit.......tongue in cheek. As for indicating on roundabouts, most people think it's a Christmas light and only use them once a year.......lol...drive safely

Word of warning, you shouldn't drive around the roundabout in the outside lane. If you're in the wrong lane you should just continue and then comeback to the roundabout and start over. crossing over lanes is fine when nobody is there, but is classed as a major fail in a driving test. If your not sure which lane to get / which exit to take get in to the right hand lane to go to the inner lane of the roundabout, go round the roundabout and see which exit to take. Getting in the left lane and not taking your exit will cause problems if you have cars around you.

You make a very good point about the lack of lights/stop signs, I am often surprised how far I can drive from my home in Brighton without ever needing to stop or even use first gear (traffic permitting), Liverpool is the furthest yet. As there is only one roundabout between me and the M23 I could theoretically drive to Scotland without encountering a single set of traffic lights or stop sign, that's about 400 miles.
@tifrap6 жыл бұрын
Ana Lou Brighton is a city. But to be fair I do live on the edge of it, and when I say that there are no traffic lights between here and Liverpool I am conveniently forgetting that getting anywhere within Liverpool would involve loads of lights. Unless I could plot a roundabout only route.

Matt Harding sorry, I have to disagree, if your lucky enough to live in the country that's fine, I have visited and lived in a lot of places in UK, it certainly isn't this quiet, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, London are a nightmare, motorways M6. M60. M62. Nightmares, Leicester, Coventry, Swindon, only the most rural places in England are like this, it won't be long before they are a thing. Of the past the way they keep getting built on any city and towns are far more busy than this..
@Slash10666 жыл бұрын
Snakeman Yes of course cities are busy but all the space between them is rural like this
@snakeman99026 жыл бұрын
Matt Harding But much of the UK isn't this quiet, as mentioned, this is still one of the quietest areas ever, the poster is saying this is why he likes driving in the UK, this isn't a true representative if the UK, The Lake district is rural, much of Yorkshire has rural areas, unless you go at stupid o'clock you would be lucky for it to be this quiet of course pending where you go, but this guy seems to be driving around a village, this isn't typical of villages.

Roundabouts are simple. If you approach a junction of any kind, and there's traffic coming from the right-hand side (UK Only), then STOP!!. On entry to dual lane roundabouts, Get in the left lane if you intend at coming off at 12 O' Clock or before. Get in the Right-hand lane and indicate right if you intend at coming off at 12 O' Clock or after (This includes going around one or more times). Always Indicate left at the junction before the one you want to actually exit, and look in your left mirror before moving across lanes. It really is that fucking simple. If both entry and exit to a roundabout are dual carriageways, use lane discipline and your fucking indicators! one day, America will catch on to how many lives are saved by roundabouts compared to junctions with lights. Another thing to thank us Brits for ;P

You have to indicate right to let people know your still going around the roundabout while in the middle of the roundabout. Never drive on the outside land on the roundabout unless your going straight over or exiting the roundabout.
@songsmith31a2 жыл бұрын
I prefer the use of "left, central or right hand" lane, not least when they all exist. The average traffic speed and acceleration of any given vehicle can also affect the movement between lanes when negotiating a roundabout safely. I am a veteran of London's Hyde Park Corner when it used to be like jockeying for position. Toot-toot!!

@jamesmacdonald30906 жыл бұрын
Problem in UK is that the next town is only another 10-20 miles so it is easy to end up doing long trips and wasting a whole day! Bought something on the South Coast.. Oh well its only an hour from London and London is only two hours away from home... traffic is horrendous around London.. that's an extra hour.. work traffic going South.. another hour wasted.. easily becomes 5-6 hours one way. You can rarely complete trips in SATNAV time! I do miss just getting on the Freeway and then getting off at your destination, if I wake up in time!
@grahvis6 жыл бұрын
Perception of distance does very much depend on where you live. When I lived in the South East a 20 mile drive would take in half of London and almost everywhere you might want to go was far closer, I wouldn't have dreamed of going all the way into London just to buy something. Now I live in Wales and think nothing of hopping on the bus, going 20 miles to buy a few things from the market and have a drink with a friend.

Most Americans couldn't cope because it takes lane discipline to drive in the UK. Americans just can't seem to help changing lanes (no signals of course) when negotiating a junction.

If you like roundabouts in the UK, give Swansea and miss: here the council really love traffic lights. Traffic lights and more traffic lights. Traffic lights just for the sake of it. I am sure somebody gets commission for every set of traffic lights that get installed.
