Barbed wire fence can not hold a candle to high tensile electric. In this video I explain just a few reasons why, including a total cost breakdown of what I paid for my entire electric fence system compared to how much a traditional barbed wire fence would cost. The final numbers might surprise you. If I can avoid it, I’ll never build another barbed wire fence again.

Thanks for making the comparison in costs. The high tensile electric is cheaper, easier to put up, lasts longer and I think it looks better.

i like the idea of making some of the holes in Timeless fenceposts larger so barbed wire can be inserted thru some of the holes for a combo with electrified high tensile wire in case the power goes out due to falling trees etc. i also like the idea of using suitably robust wooden posts soaked in diesel fuel and used motor oil for the corners and braces.

Thanks for the info. I will probably use this to cross fence my pasture and start a rotation plan. Perimeter was just done using woven but those dollars make no sense for the interior lines on a smaller scale homestead. I would be interested in your opinions on different energizers too.

For a premeter fence at our corner. We have chain link. At our other place its barbed wire. Now I have enough woven wire to fenct that 14 acres. And I intend to build a new woven wire fence 10 ft inside the property line. Ive already planted things like HedgeApple and False orange in the 10 ft. My goal is to have a 10 ft wide hedge row of bramble ect all around the outside of the woven wire. Good for wildlife and will help keep people at bay.

I don't see many Hedge Apple trees. I have one good sized one here on my place, but I think a lot of people cut them out because they don't know what they are. I guess the country used to be covered up with them for hedge rows like you're saying. This place has part of an old dry stacked rock fence that continues onto my neighbor's place for a 1/4 mile, that used to be part of the farm.

Andrew best video you have made! I slow down watching yours as of late because I like informative farming. Great information here and share more on charger. I have 20 acres also that I have been putting electric fence around a little differently but same concept. Great Job

I have found that the 15 gauge gaucho wire is a little iffy for perimeter fencing. The cattle don't seem to respect it as much as the 12.5 gauge barbed wire with the longer barbs ( I've seen them use 15 gauge as a scratching post to take off the winter coat). It is about 50% more expensive too and stays are pretty much mandatory over 10' post spacing. The high tensile is the way to go for rotational grazing when you need electric power. There can be some debate if you don't need the electric but I would build plain wire high tensile anyway. The US is one of the few places where high tensile has not taken over.

I'm not sure why it hasn't taken hold in the US. I'm tempted to say that tradition is a big part of that, but I'm only guessing. I do know that there are some state fence laws that haven't addressed it, in terms of liability issues pertaining to livestock, but I've never heard anyone mention anything about that in discussion as to why they prefer barbed wire.

Just happens to be your opinion. I would not allow high tensile electric fencing installed on my farm for free! Just my opinion, but I'm not calling everyone else's choice junk just because I like something else.

How would this fence do if you hd a couple feet of snow 5 months of the year?

Actually, it would do better than one might think. There are a couple of different options. One, you can install cut-off switches on each line, then shut them off as they come in contact with the snow. Two, you could install automatic shut-off switches that will do the same thing automatically when there is a fault in the line. Those are commonly used in water gates and are called something like "flood gate controllers," depending on the manufacturer. It would also be a good idea to run a hot/ground system, which is what I have, in which the ground wires are tied back into the ground side of the energizer. That ensures that any animal that touches a hot and ground wire at the same time (like trying to go through a fence) will get a shock, regardless of how well they're in contact with the ground. Good question!

@@PlaneViewFarm thanks for the reply, we live near Dawson Creek BC Canada and we can get quite a bit of snow here. We run cattle sheep and goats, I’ve been looking into fencing ideas that would work for all three, this seems like it might be it.

I would not build homestead dependent on electricity. Nor would I want electricity for homestead, since it would be family operation and do not want electric for childrens. I dont want the children forced to stay in yard away from electricity. I know nothing about electricity and do not want to learn.

I understand your concerns. However, there are ways around them. Electric fencing can be off-grid with a small solar panel. In fact there are energizers that come with their own panel. Those have been available for decades. My yard is fenced with woven wire to protect the kids, but they also run around the property and play where there is electric fencing. If they are going to be playing near the fence, we simply flip a switch and shut it off for that time. They know how to turn it off and on by themselves. So far, after almost 12 years of using electric fence in some form or fashion, I'm the only one in my family that has actually been shocked by it and while it's not a pleasant feeling, it is designed not to cause physical harm. However, fully understand that it may not be for everyone. Thanks for watching!

As a child and growing up we always used electric fence to keep the cows and horses at home. It never was an issue and it also was a right of passage to test the fence. Way less harmful than the World Wide Web don't you think?

I’m no expert and I know it will work but I’ve heard 2 joules is pretty light for cows if used for perimeter. And higher joule solar energizers are pricey if you look at premier 1 a 8 joule is 800 bucks.
