I'm 21, I've deleted all social media, and I swapped my iPhone for a flip phone. It's been a month, and now I'm thinking of getting myself a bike for my 22nd birthday. I love the calming feeling I get from living a simpler life. I really like your content.

Riding bikes is the best!
@_Shadbolt_5 күн бұрын
I did that once and the flip phone was so slow and crashed all the time - so it ended up stressing me out more than my iphone 😅 Also that iphone will come in useful for navigating while on your bike! Otherwise, great idea getting rid of the socials, they're genuinely useless.
@historicalaccuracy154 күн бұрын
@@_Shadbolt_ Were you using one of the "smart-ish" flip phones? I got turned on to the idea of them when I saw one in a video but very quickly started to hear about issues like that with them and decided against it. Now I'm wondering if maybe the best solution might be a paired smartwatch and just keeping the actual phone buried in my bag to manage my bad impulsive scrolling habits that way? Tinkering around with time limits and minimalist launchers and stuff just... Doesn't seem to cut it enough tho... As embarrassing as it is I think I'm hopelessly addicted to this damn thing and in need of a goddamn intervention of some kind or another
@_Shadbolt_4 күн бұрын
@@historicalaccuracy15 I believe it was the Nokia 2660 - it had whataspp and maps theoretically but they hardly worked 😂 Honestly it just made me realise how useful and practical smartphones are. The only issue is social media. Delete those and KZfaq from the phone and you won't have anything to scroll!
@Gnmar27232 күн бұрын
I definitely feel similarly - have always fancied the idea of going back to the days I had a slide phone. I could call, text, and low res pictures. No socials, no distractions, no smartphone addiction. I also tend to get rather down on myself for not being able to curb my usage and still have a smartphone that does all the amazing things that it can do... Lately I have started to shift my thinking about if from internal to external locus of control - it has long been the absolute no. 1 goal of big tech to keep your attention for as long as humanly possible. They are the ones who have made algorithms so insanely "good". And I know I'm in control of my own life and literally have the choice to turn the screen off whenever I please, but you also must accept that this is not an inherent character flaw of your person. The tech giants have done everything they can to hold your attention, and understanding that makes it easier to step away from it.

What a beautiful way to think about commuting by bike. I really enjoyed watching this video. The clips while riding the bike, your thoughts about commuting by bike. I'm 34, living in Germany, also never owned a car. Commuted with public transport and bike (just in summer) for years. Since the corona pandemic I only go by bike. I prefer to wear sporty clothes while riding, so I always carry an extra set of clothes for work around. And I also have a set of rain clothes. Using a bike to get around was always a very natural thing to do for me. I'm super flexible when it comes to time management, get at least 40 minutes of exercise daily, costs less than the alternatives and is good for the environment. And on tpp of that: I just like riding bikes. Did it as a kid and never stopped. As the years past by I may have lost a few of these positive feelings and thoughts about it. So I take this video to start remembering why I enjoy riding a bike and what it means to me. So, thank you for the video and your thoughts. And the beautiful shots of Seoul. Have a beautiful weekend.

I’m in my early 30’s and just purchased my first bike; commuting to work now, five miles each way. It’s a challenge because I struggle with anxiety and I don’t like being “seen” but visibility is essential when you’re on a bike, surrounded by cars. It’s a good challenge though, especially when it does better for my health and the planet. Your content is pleasing to watch. It’s familiar to me as an english speaker who is learning Korean and getting into cycling. Cheers.

This is crazy- I am in my twenties and I also have started running my little errands on my bike. >.< I also have anxiety and I feel like cycling has pushed me out of my head. In my experience, if I start to think I won’t be able to balance or I am going to hit a tree, I do. It has forced me to live in the moment and trust myself and my body. Similarly to your experience, I have been afraid of the cars and uncomfortable with being seen, but part of cycling is making sure you are visible and confident so that cars can see you and hopefully not run us out the road.

Hooray for the algorithm with this one! There's really nothing more you needed to add about the practicalities of bicycle commuting. You either do it because you have to or you love to. You love your bike and you love to find every reason whenever practical to ride it. I feel that way about my own basic hybrid workhorse. It's unmistakably my own with racks, bags and accessories galore. Also because I'm 2 metres tall, it always stands out handlebars and saddle above every other bike around it. The star of your video though were the back streets and scenic views of your commutes and the restaurants. If you do nothing more than just remake versions of this video again and again, I will keep coming back for more. 👍and subscribed. Oh, and no matter how much you love making videos and riding your bike, make sure you spend more time with your wife and making sure she knows that you love her even more! Priorities! Never forget.

I used to work for a company near East Grinstead, UK and my cycle commute from home was 1 mile on local town roads then 8 miles on a gravel bridleway which was an old railway line that cut through the countryside called "Worth Way". 6 years of commuting on it and I had some amazing times, several dog attacks, a horse attack and thick snow that lasted for ages on the country lane. It was a real adventure and I actually valued the commute more than the job (don't tell my old boss). I have moved on and working back up in London but with remote working, I am cycling out in the morning with some nice coffee stops before returning home, so a sort of proxy-commute. Fascinating that you are still in semi-casual tie-based attire in the workplace. From a visit to Tokyo, I remember business is still very formal in terms of dress-code. It appears that you are not having to wear a full suit which is great :). I was interested to hear you say that they are not used to bikes and that traffic can be heavy. I noted that in Japan to but also the pedestrian areas were mixed with cycling, which I thought was great given that in the UK its strickly a no-go option to mount the curb in a busy Town/City. I loved that in Japan and was very happy for shared used and common sense. I sometimes get the feeling that we simply can't have nice things in the UK because our cultural landscape means that we will lean into risky violent issues for example, allow mixed used of pavement areas and people will ride the pavements at 50mph on e-bikes knocking everyone over.. Common sense is hard to find in the UK. I heard from a friend living in Japan that they have the highest level of bike theft in the world. However, its apparently like the umbrella situation, where bikes left unlocked outside shops are often grabbed, cycled 2 blocks and then left again. The owner then reports it to the police and in the vast majority of cases the bike is quickly found. But its still registered as theft by the police. This could be urban myth! Great video as ever and nice to see the bike in action again and the coffee buzz was palpable.
@probablyridingАй бұрын
That sounds like a delightful commute apart from the dog attacks! Always love riding out on the bridleways back at home. Japan and Korea have some similarities but are very different. I reckon bike theft thing must be an urban myth. Korean’s also think their country has the highest theft but I looked at the numbers and they’re nowhere near European countries or the US. Bikes get stolen here because rolls either don’t lock them at all or they’re just locked badly with cheap locks. I love how safe it is.

@probablyridingАй бұрын
I’m the same. I see people in the cars stuck traffic and think why would you want to do that. I realise it’s a necessity for some though. Can’t believe I own my dream bike. Certainly a forever bike.
@Mike-vd2qtАй бұрын
Sweet Rivendell. I know how that frame would feel and ride with those tires. The biggest thing I've experienced about commuting by bike is how it separates work from home. The kid like fun of hopping on your bike leaves work back there, way back there in a different place. Side note, those Nitto Albatross bars are comfy for short distances, but my old arthritic hands need drop bars about 1" above seat height and a Brooks B-17. ☮
@probablyridingАй бұрын
It is a wonderful bike and yes, the commute is a nice way to separate work and home. The bars on this bike are Nitto Billie bars. They’re wider than the albatross (which I also found too narrow) with more space for your hands. They’re my favourite bars so far. The Brooks B17 is nice but I think this Berthoud Aspin is by far the comfiest saddle I’ve had. Thanks for watching.

@thenexthobbyАй бұрын
Wonderful. You've taken advantage of paths, alleyways and other non-official routes that would be otherwise unavailable if "everyone" there commuted. It's not a commute, it's an adventure. Envious of your Atlantis; I own a few Bridgestones and was a "BOB" member in the '90s. Trying to start doing a bit of this myself, despite working from home and in a small town. Everything here is nearby, however that always means sharing the roads with cars. There are not any alleyways or other paths you find in urban areas. I identified a target goal excuse: There's a small grocer -- last one in town -- we usually avoid for various reasons related to small selection. But I can take a bike to it on a 25mph suburban street from my backyard and otherwise avoid the traffic associated with our regular grocer. Perhaps the selection at the small grocer isn't so bad after all. Would like to be car-free when possible. Last year I bought an old motorcycle, but guess what? That requires "dressing up" -- I will not ride that without helmet, gloves, motorcycling shoes etc -- whereas a bike demands much less, and I've come to realize that convenience is why it should be more practical.

Hi Marcus, I think your videos are fantastic! I too find myself brining coffee or tea on bike commutes.

Thank you. Certainly adds to the enjoyment.

I'm from the Netherlands. I've always wondered how it would be to be cycling in the Far East. I have seen Japan for a few days, but not South Korea. I can see that the infrastructure in those cities is also car dominated, but they do think about bikes by some lanes. Good to see this side of the world! Thanks.

Thanks! Cycling in the Netherlands is a dream.

I love commuting on my Brompton. Nice to ride and convenient to tuck under the desk at work. Nice video content. Ive just discovered your channel 👍🏼

Brompton’s are great commuter bikes. My brother’s commute in London is part riding and part on the train. Great to be able to take his bike on the train easily.

I’d love to see a video compilation of the shots of your bike with the beautiful backgrounds and flowers. 🌸 🚲 🏠 Those are always one of my favorite moments in your videos.

Another gem thrown up by KZfaq. I think you sold riding to work pretty well😊., Seoul looks amazing in May. ❤. I am a 55 year old in Brighton. I have been cycling on the seafront to work for 19 years. It would be crazy not to!

That sounds like a delightful commute!

Really enjoyed that. Thanks 😊 I am just starting to customize an older mountain bike. I am older so I need the lower gears to get up the hills!!

fun videos - thank you. i commuted year-round by bike in NYC. 19 - 20 minutes. was so fun. now living in Hong Kong. i wouldn't dare bike here. but i think we got Seoul's nice weather last week. now it's back to rain, 28°, and humidity.

Thank you. I was in Hong Kong last month and absolutely loved it but it’s certainly not a bike friendly city!

I find it so much easier to explore cities on bike. Here in Japan, I find a similar experience. New places, old places, good food. That's good cycling. Beautiful bike you have, too.

I briefly was very much car "light" while living in Oregon a few years back and dearly miss that lifestyle. Much more difficult with where I live now. It really is like a portal into another world when you live mostly by bike, especially in a place with the infrastructure. Hoping to get back to that world in the near future, thanks for sharing! And not to state the obvious but that Atlantis looks like a dream!
@probablyriding17 күн бұрын
That’s a good way of putting it. It does feel like a portal to another world. I always feel like I’m on the outside looking in at everything else. Lucky to have better infrastructure than a lot of places here. Hope you can find that portal again!

I like cycling, too, but it’s really more like I enjoy being on trails than the ride itself. Being on a path next to nature and away from loud and dangerous cars alloes me to have a bit of alone time, it’s almost like meditation.

I witness so much more of the world by riding. I feel that by witnessing more of the world, I experience more of life. By car, the world just goes by in a mindless blur.

Love the tip of getting a second hand bike. It's important to have bicycle being affordable for everyone! My suggestions of future videos: - I'd love to see your process of planning a trip to the countryside. What maps do you use, how do you decide on campsites? - Always excited with specific stuff to South Korea, maybe some "language learning video" with information about important (bicycle related) phrases might be nice? Also things like road signs or traffic rules specific to South Korea... - Videos on specific districts of Seoul might also be interesting.
