I finally finished Master Detective Archives: Rain Code a few months ago, and it was so good I just HAD to make a video about it. Consider this a review of sorts for the game, as I give a spoiler-free analysis of how this game is able to innovate and refine the detective game genre. Whether you've played it before or not, I hope you enjoy!
Music Used (All songs are from Rain Code):
Deduction Denouement
Aetherias Tragedy
Gumshoe Gab
Kanai Ward
Mystery Labyrinth
High Society City
Rainy After Rain (WDO Session)

The protagonist, Yuma actually has more personality and how he is important to the game than just being a protagonist. The characters were more thankfully well written and well designed. It’s awesome how Kodaka improved his story writing, and the plot twist was great. Sadly it doesn’t get the recognition it deserved as opposed to Danganronpa S (which was a disappointing cash grab.) I love how the game overall has great writing in general and how the ending sets off a more natural flow to a sequel. The models for the game are also very impressive, deriving from the UDG models and improving them more entirely.

Spoiler meme The real reason why Yuma forcibly allowed Shinigami to take his memories is because he solved the fnaf lore and realized how boring it was knowing it all so he got rid of his memories in order to rediscover and solve fnaf again.

I absolute adored Rain Code's gaudy neon fever dream art direction, there's nothing else out there quite like it. Kanai Ward is also just an extremely cool setting, and Rain Code's final antagonist is genuinely one of the most interesting and compelling characters Kodaka's written.

I really agree with what you said about this being Kodaka's best story, but not the best game. The actual gameplay does feel like a bit of a step down from V3 (which honestly doesn't bother me too much since i mostly played it for the story aspect and it still felt rewarding enough even though it was simple), but hopefully it will improve gradually if it gets future sequels. One thing I hope for is more involved sidequests where you do more than just talking to people. Maybe there could be mini mysteries that have investigations, but dont need mystery labyrinths to solve (Halara's DLC could be used as the template so it seems possible to implement). 6:47 I see what you did here 😭

My impression is that the game has alot of good ideas that just needed to be expanded on to truly make this the best Kodaka game. If they let you pick which detectives you want to tag along with more for each case, actually hang out with the detectives, have more meaningful skills and mini-games actually had difficulty to them, this game would've been at least an 8.5/10, especially with a very memorable story once you beat it. The post-game seems to be enough to make the purchase, which I know I will when it's ported to Steam. I'm very satisfied with the OST, which is a major plus for me as a stickler for game music, so much that I've been had several tracks on my playlist for a while. If anyone asks who my favs are - Shinigami, Halara, and Fubuki. Yomi and Makoto on a good day for the tension they bring. I'd say it's likely that there's a sequel. Feels like a soft reset for one and I'm interested enough to see what other detectives Kodaka can cook up (which I'm sure he has at least a dozen now)

I think V3 is better mostly because it was built on 4 games plus 2 anime seasons… I think Raincode as a stand-alone game or rather a first entry is way better than danganronpa 1 or 2 and accomplishes a ton on its own. But I think V3 which is in my top few games ever, is still a lot better. Don’t get me wrong though. Raincode was my game of the year though and it’s still one of my favorite games ever. I think the series has a ton of potential and I would love to see future sequels

I don’t think it’s better than THH or DR2, and I’d say those are Kodaka’s best games without a doubt. Rain Code is a good game overall, but it is also very flawed, particularly towards the middle.

This game is fantastic and I also really like the fact that the pink blood was plot relevant, but I also think that every Danganronpa game is better.

Personally I didn't feel like continually exploring Kanai Ward, since it didn't really feel like there was anything new. Of course there's new parts of the city that unlock and all that, but that's only a small portion of the overall explorable area. Perhaps what could make it more interesting to me is more things to do that I find interesting. Another commenter suggested mini mystery sidequests, in the vein of the Judgement spinoff duology of the Yakuza series, and while that could work, it could also dilute the focus of the narrative. The focus of that series is perhaps equal parts the combat and exploration as is the story and things making sense in story for you to just fool around for hours isn't a concern. I don't think the same thing could work for a "normal" detective game. I haven't beaten Judgement yet, but its story has a long drawn out mystery that takes time to acquire pieces of the puzzle, much like say, Persona 4. A visual novel could do that, but perhaps that'd make me bored....? Frankly I don't know, and minor gripes aside, I absolutely adored the game and will definitely pick up whatever the team makes next! Also I preferred the Mystery Labyrinths and they're smaller Reasoning Death Matches to the Danganronpa trials as they were smaller and bite-sized. Many trials felt like they went on forever, and while the Mystery Labyrinths were similar in length over all, they had much more variety, keeping them engaging. The strength of the game is precisely as you and the Famitsu review put it, variety that causes you to never put the game down.

Yeah, great points all around, I’m kind of glad the game didn’t go crazy with side quests cause if there were any more I would’ve just skipped them in favor of the story cause I was so hooked. But yeah, a biiiit more mystery in the side quests would’ve been nice. And yeah, mystery labyrinths felt way faster paced than DR trials did, never really thought about that.

Didn't like Danganronpa at all, but Raincode has quickly scalated to one of my favorite games of all time! The misteries were great and the writing was on point to me. Would also love to see a sequel if it happens

My biggest problem with this was solving the mysteries didnt actually help. Completing the mystery labyrinths just makes things more difficult for everyone

I feel like it would've been cool if it initially did help, but over time, it becomes less and less helpful, making Yuma wonder if killing people for justice is even worth it or not, adding to the themes that, no, it isn't.
@themaxtails
@themaxtails 4 ай бұрын
Isn't that the whole point? Yuma struggles frequently with that question throughout the game. It still feels satisfying to conclude a mystery and the labyrinths are still fun to play anyways, at least to me. :)

I kind of disagree! I feel like the running theme was that the very reason Kanai Ward was so depressing was because the mysteries went unsolved. When you help somebody to find thr truth it usually either saved someone who was innocent or brought closure to someone who couldn't deal with the Peacekeepers spreading misinformation. Especially in the ending the truth helped to bring about a good answer that stopped letting the residents of Kanai Ward feel uneasy and actually made the face the truth head on to become innovative! Even if most cases ended with a depressing death it wasnt like they died for no reason and nobody solved anything

I think that the only thing I didn’t really enjoy while playing was the mystery labyrinths for the same reasons you listed (walking in a line, limited movement, etc.) but the story is really amazing and the only thing I care about in a game most of the time lol. When it comes to the unimportance of the suspects and culprits, I don’t think I ever really thought about it 😅 I seriously never felt too attached to the characters but I also didn’t really care to get to know them so it never bothered me. I would like to know more about characters outside of the main cast tho I think that would be amazingggg

I feel like one of raincode's biggest flawes is making their mysteries a biiit too easy. like they put it's major realization card too early on or too predictable in the chapter. but with a few tweaks? 10/10... okay 8/10 because the other detectives never felt much like major characters since they do litterally nothing outsside their chapter. love this game but that hurt
@Po_ke_girl
@Po_ke_girl 28 күн бұрын
My biggest complaint is that half of the chapters feel like they just kinda…. Happen? Like the story feels disjointed at some points. Like I didn’t gave a single fluff about the nail man. I had no care about who he was or anything. Plus it was obvious. I will say tho, the pink blood twist was insane and when I slowly started realizing where they were going my jaw dropped.

There is a big plot hole though, the blank week mystery is literally impossible because it could only happen if the sun was out 24/7, which it isn’t, the homunculi would’ve stopped being berserk when night time came. I really like this game but realizing this plot hole really decreased my enjoyment of the story sadly.
@vinoperson1239
@vinoperson1239 3 ай бұрын
I think the idea is that, after exposure to sunlight / UV radiation, it takes a while for the homunculus to re stabilize itself even after the sunlight is blocked off. Think about when Yuma turns off the rain cloud generator: Kurumi is exposed to sunlight for like 5 seconds and immediately passes out. Then in the entire following scene of Yuma and Makoto talking, the rain cloud generator is back up and yet Kurumi still doesn't wake up. Now expand that to the idea of them being exposed all day, and you could imagine that they're on a loop where they're going berserk all day, begin quieting down at night, but then right as they would finally re stabilize a new day begins and the cycle repeats. Edit: This is also likely why Makoto said if left exposed to UV rays for too long a defective homunculi will eventually die, and yet none of them did die during the blank week, because a regular day doesn't last long enough for continuous UV exposure to kill them.

the light thing is just one of many plot holes about the blank-week. with the blank week we are made to believe that within a week an entire city's worth of people were killed by their homunculi , Makoto cleaned up the whole mess of blood and broken things and likely boarded up buildings that was no doubtedly caused by the homunculi rampage completely on his own in a massive city, then built the rain machine. not to mention the blood draws are not where the homunculi's memories of their og's lives stop, but it should be because if we're assuming the DNA is what carried their shared memories over, then they shouldn't have access to anything past the blood draw- but they do. and if we assume that their memories did stop at the blood draw, then that means all of what i stated before happened in a week _as well as_ a whole city's worth of homunculi having been made and put into copies of their og's clothes and given things like tattoos and scars because even if memories can be transferred through DNA, things like scars/tatts/clothes can't because they aren't part of your being in the same way. i've thought about this more than i probably should have
