Tai Lung posing a physical threat to Po, Shen presenting a mental threat to Po, and Kai being a spiritual threat to Po, is all just a small example of Dreamworks' genius writing on behalf of Kung Fu Panda

I think in that last scene part of Shen wanted to change but to him it was too late and so he decided to attack because to him it felt like the only real option. he just had everything he's been working towards the majority of his life be destroyed in the span of a few days after all, and when he see's the cannon falling he sees a way out and a way to find peace

Fun Fact: Po was originally going to save Shen from drowning, presumably after the cannon was blown up, where Shen would've, and possibly, realized the errors of his ways, but the idea was ultimately scrapped

Shen is the best villain in Kung Fu Panda hands down

The opening is just something you wouldn't expect in a childs movie And that makes the Kung Fu Pandas so refreshing There's so much in them not just for kids, rather even things that go straight over kids heads

The qoute "you either die the hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" could not be more true. Your take on Shen is the one thing I've been trying to figure out on Shen and Po. They are opposites which just makes him more compelling and he is the best villain in Kung Fu Panda and all of Dreamworks at least in my opinion. Great video!

I am a huge Fan of Lord Shen!! He is amazing! Man.. I remember seeing him back in the movies in 2011 When he debuted.. He was a amazing fighter, Kung fu Artist, The ruler of Peacocks and their master, and his performence and abilities of running into walls is actually Amazing. I was so inspired and Amazed to see him and by him. Best part.. I heard he came back in Kung Fu Panda 4!! I was shocked. He is my favorite of all of the Kung Fu Panda characters!! (2011 & 2024) He is back!!!

6:18 in the prophecy the goat says "If you continue down this dark path you will be defeated by a warrior in black and white." the prophecy doesn't outright state that a panda will defeat him and you want to know who else is black and white except for the pandas? Shen. Shen only has himself to thank for getting himself killed, Poo only stopped him in his path of destruction, had he backed down he could've lived but he chose to continue and ultimately sealed his own fate.

Each villain in the KFP had something different to challenge Po. Tai Lung: Body Shen: Mind Kai: Spirit Tai Lung was defeated not when Po started beating him up or sending Tai Lung to the spirit realm. It was when Tai Lung couldn't accept the truth that there was no tangible ingredient or power, it was instead what was inside not the outside. While Po accepted the outside appearance isn't everything, Tai Lung was only filled with rage and vengeful restlessness. Po overcame Shen through not vengeful retribution but instead learned to heal from the mental turmoil, Shen couldn't fathom ever recovering from the scars on ones own mind. He couldn't let go therefore it ended in death. Kai was the mountain that was seemingly impossible to climb, Po in the film was placed in a position he wasn't comfortable in at all and had to show his spirit/will could handle it. His spirit was tested as Kai got closer he began to get desperate for mastering Chi, Kai slowly began to break his spirit as Po see's his family and friends in terror that Po seemingly lost as he shouted them to *run.* Yet Po still ended up showing one big act to show his spirit and will to win when he sent himself to the spirit realm with Kai. Kai couldn't break his spirit and as a result was brought back to the prison he was held in for years. But that wasn't enough to defeat Kai, the way Kai was defeated was not merely by Po. Po had taught the pandas and those around them spirit, the spirit to stand up and fight therefore they gave Po the strength inside to climb the impossible mountain.

People have been talking about Death from Puss in Boots 2 a ton recently, but ill quote something I said in a discord server. People simp over Death from Puss in Boots 2, but they forget the original Dreamworks big bad who severely traumatized the protagonist and made him completely question everything about their life. Plus, Death isn't even really evil, just an antagonist. The reason he isn't evil is because he's just doing his job. Shen on the other hand, traumatizes Po, mocking and taunting him about his tragic upbringing throughout the entire story, projecting his own insecurities onto Po to drag Po down to his own level This is what truly separates these two amazing villains and pushes Shen to be a top 2 villain in fiction imo. Jot just Dreamworks, not just animation, not just cinema, across all of fiction
