The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie was everything I've sorely missed in my fantasy, Grim Dark at its finest.

This is my favorite series and to any new readers I would advice 2 things: 1. Get the audiobook - Steven. Pacey's (the narrator) portrayal of the characters in the pages make the books even better. 2. Don't skip the standalone books- They are set after the first trilogy and they are considered by a lot of readers to be even better than the first trilogy. (They are that good.)

Yep I loved this book as well. I love Abercrombie's witty way of writing, inserting jokes where appropriate and quotes that are dedicated for the characters ("you have to be realistic about these things" for Logen and "stairs my old enemy" for Glokta). Even though there isn't a decided plot established, this book really serves its purpose to introduce the characters, main nations, setting, etc. and I'm sure I'll see more of plot stuff in the next book (haven't read it yet). As for the characters, they are absolutely lovable, especially Glokta, which I agree with you, that he is probably one of the best fantasy characters out there, never thought I could be so emotionally invested in a character. Great vid and keep it up!

Before i started this book i had heard that joe was the "lord grimdark" and that there was very little plot in it. I was a little disappointed as i was reading it i didn't really see why he was considered the "lord grimdark" i mean it was pretty grim don't get me wrong i was just expecting more, then when i got to the end i was like ok yeah i totally get the "lord grimdark" now this guy is awesome. I am also not sure why people say there is no plot i mean it is obviously much more character focused but i still thought the plot was great. I also was not expecting to laugh so much every character says or does something that kept making me laugh. My fav character was Ferro she is awesome. Looking forward to more First Law videos.

I got about 30% into the book and haven’t touched it in about 2 weeks because I just had no idea what was going on or what the main point to any of it was. I tried looking everywhere for some type of explanation of what the book is about and this is the first and only video that’s done that perfectly. Thank you!

Ah man I totally get where you’re coming from because at first you’re just dropped into the thick of things and it’s a bit like ‘who are these people? where are we? what’s the purpose?’ But once I got my bearings, things really clicked and honestly the characters were what pulled me through that initial stage of confusion. Thanks for the nice comment!

What I really want to see would be a discussion of Abercrombies work as postmodern art. I really like how the characters themselves are in dialogue with fiction and storytelling. For instance Logen reaches the wizards tower and when the wizard asks if he'd like to know how the book is going to play out, he says no. He's a postmodern protagonist who struggles with the Absurd and is cripplingly aware of his own flaws, yet must continue down the road of life despite it's muddy choices. In book two Abercrombie introduces a colonial setting that reads almost like a modern Heart of Darkness, and those that have finished book two will know that it ends with a twist that is oh so existential.

I'm 180 pages in, everytime I sit down and read it, it's thoroughly enjoyable. But those times gets a bit far between, since I don't have that plot, that needs resolving, to draw me in, yet. But I think I will get there over the next few chapters! Glokta is the best character, if the whole book was just about him I would have read it in 2 sittings. @@LostinDiscovery: Thanks for the response! The praise for it has been unanimous, so I know I'm dealing with one of the best, it's just so slow. The next fiction book I own but have yet to read is Way of kings. Looking forward to it aswell, it has also gotten unanimous (mostly) praise. Hopefully it will have a more involving plot. I have heard and am prepared for a slow start though. After that, 'Gentlemen Bastards' seems interesting, the first one being supposedly a cool heist-story, and all I know about the sequels are that they have awesome covers.
