I lived in Taiwan for two years and have since visited three times. What can I say? As soon as I leave, I miss Taiwan.
Yet, for some reason, I still can't make the commitment to move to Taiwan. Do I have commitment issues? Here's why I'm afraid to live in Taiwan again despite the fact I love it so much, have friends here, opportunities, etc..

The intensive Mandarin courses are NO JOKE! You are not allowed to (officially) work while enrolled and from the schedule I've seen there wouldn't be time to work anyway. You could SO dominate the YT/Social Media space here in TW. Still, Spain.... it's calling you too! How great to have so many options! We feel that each year when we think about renewing our contracts. We can go so many places!! So much more freedom, safety, and security than we would have back in the states. See you out there in the great wide open! ~JB

Speaking mandarin is easy, but the word is difficult :) normally foreigners learn listening and speaking only, reading and writing take more time to remember~

Hahah speaking isn’t that easy! Through immersion it’s best to learn but getting tones right is harder.

Not sure why people keep telling you where you should go. Home in where YOUR heart is, not anyone else’s. After 39 years in the US, I am seriously debating about moving to Asia. Taiwan is one of the choices since my mom is still there. But also considering Thailand and Vietnam.

It's ultimately a choice between the known and the unknown. In Taiwan pretty much everything is transparent but other countries may have unwritten rules which makes Taiwan the second best choice for expats just behind Indonesia. As for the risk of war, I would like to point out that no amphibious assaults have been successful since WWII against an active resistance. Secondly, when the entire world was rushing to invest in China and opening their on markets to China, Taiwan was the only country to cancel such effort by China. Thirdly, Taiwan's laws are very business friendly, which helps foreigners start their enterprise without a lot of funding. You can ask Xiaofei (Asher) for tips. And lastly, Taiwan has been working hard to become bilingual. Even if that goal does not completely fulfill itself, one does not need to be fluent in Mandarin or Taiwanese to have a good life in Taiwan because the locals will go out of their ways to understand you and with the help of modern tools, anyone can make a living there.

I feel that there are more and more expats in Taiwan that you can build and have a relationship with comparing to local people due to language barrier. In my opinion the main downside of living in Taiwan is the house pricing being too high. We don't worry about china if wars breakout that could mean WWIII anyway

The best time of my life was in Guangzhou, where I would be now if it wasn't for the political situation.I moved to Taiwan on January 31st and plan on a long-term relationship with this country. I initially hesitated because of the China threat, but then I realized that was the reason I had to come. What better place for Art, Wine, & Anarchy to continue giving a platform to artists than a potentially endangered culture struggling to have a voice in the world. Running from the danger wouldn't make me worth a damn as an anarchist. After just a short time here, I'm starting to think that the US's refusal to recognize Taiwan's independence has less to do with China and more to do with the fact that Taiwan proves that a nation can pay low taxes and still give everyone healthcare; making Taiwan a threat to America's current status quo. It would be equally as tragic for Taiwan to become the 51st state as it would be for Taiwan to join the CCP.

Kayla, Taiwan would appreciate your staying here and helping it internationalize to the degree you can help. Taiwan needs internationalization to survive in the long term and can use all the help it can get on that. You have a right to consider your happiness and safety as the primary factors. However, please also consider what exactly is it that makes you want to stay and whether those things mean also any obligation to sacrifice some of your happiness and safety. I was born Taiwanese and came back of my own accord to help Taiwan against China, come hell or high water. It was this or joining the Ukrainian military. You have a different relationship with Taiwan and have no moral obligation to stay or fewer emotional ties to make you stay. You must ask whether the Taiwanese people are worth it. Are we worth it, when so many people are so ignorant and delusional enough to support pro-China forces? Sometimes, even I think it’s not worth it, that it’s a lost cause. But I have no choice but to stay to the bitter end if it comes to that because of who I am. You have a choice to stay and help us overcome these delusions and improve the chances by just that much so that it won’t come to the bitter end. If Taiwan can internationalize sufficiently, with sufficient foreign investment and diplomatic and military support from the rest of the world, it may just be able to survive intact as it is. For that, however, it needs more people like you to stay and transform it.

I hear you! At the end of the day, it’s still my life to chose where I go and if I find home elsewhere it is what it is. But I do understand. That’s why I actually encourage people to visit here, even if they just visit the more people that have a personal connection is important, than just watching Taiwan on the news and assuming it’s dangerous when China flies their plans around 🤦‍♀️

Taiwan may have a special place in your mind but at the present it's in facing china's threats and intimidation not only in encroaching its territory but also in the parliament, media and international arenas as well. If I were you I would try European countries, Australia or New Zealand to see if these countries were suitable to settle down. Just let fancy lead you and if after all these trying you still feel Taiwan is the best country for you to put roots then Taiwan still welcomes you to come back. Taiwan is precluded from many international arenas Just because most of the countries comply with china's request. After ww2 the delegates from 48 countries gathered in San Francisco US to sign the Treaty of Peace with Japan. According to the Treaty Japan only gave up the sovereignty over Taiwan but Japan has never transferred the sovereignty over Taiwan to any other country. The right to decide the Taiwan's future reside in 23.5 million of citizens currently living in Taiwan. If I were the leader of an democratic country I would be ranged with other countries to receive Taiwan into international organizations.
