You are the first person I've seen talk about this, interesting ideas & very curious how Apple will use this. Although I was under the impression that thread networks kind of rely on devices staying stationary. The reason the mesh works is because the network assumes to get from point A to point C it needs to hit point B in between. If your mesh is moving around, that route may no longer be optimal.

Thanks! Yes I think this is why the iPhone probably won’t function as a Thread router or border router. Think of it more like a Thread-based control like a Thread button.

Matter Controllers do have to be stationary and connected to Wifi 100% of the time, while Thread controls don't have to be. Although Thread Border Routers do have to be stationary.

While I recognize there's a more significant barrier to entry for users when it comes to Home Assistant... many of these things you can already do. Like automations based off of when you leave your home. I have my HA set up to widen my ecobee thermostat range when it detects that my phone isn't connected to my home wifi. I can also set up plugs and light automations based off my phones status. HA works flawlessly for me.

Hi Eric, Nice explanation. However the comparison between Thread and BT does not make sense. The BT Mesh network is optimised for smart home and networking applications and thread shares many similarities in that case, devices like Airpod only BT LE which is not for many to many connections.

Yes, it’s going to come in very handy for the government when they ban encryption. All the good guy nations are doing it, like the Us, UK, Canada, EU etc. The neural engine allows them to use A.I to circumvent end to end encryption. It’s like having the Stasi in your pocket. Can’t wait for their mask to slip because we all know it’s not really about protecting children. Half of them are abusers, anyway. Like Biden.

Hi Eric, thnx for the video! I was wondering if you have found a way to know if the iPhone 15 Pro is actually using thread when using for example the home app when controlling thread devices. When I look in the Eve app, I can see the thread devices in my home (such as Eve Energy & Belki Wemo) but also a lot of unidentified 'Router XX' where XX is 2 digit hexadecimal code in 'unknown room'. I guess many of them are my HomePods & Apple TV... But... I can't fine more details. Any ideas?

I wonder if thread support is to also help make the iPhone more useful in its nightstand setting. Considering Matter might take a year or two to really gain traction, having thread feature in every iPhone right away may not be that attractive for Apple.

@gregg5958
@gregg5958 9 ай бұрын
Huh? Hue uses Zigbee as it’s communication protocol, not Thread. Though it is a similar implementation in practice. They even outlined this in an interview: “Mesh networking with Zigbee in an efficient and reliable way is really hard. We have been working on getting that to work well for a decade. And Thread at scale in the complexity of users homes is not yet proven. I’m a bit afraid of how open Thread will be. There will be many, many companies with many different implementations in the same network. So, I see a lot of risk, and we don’t have plans to build Thread light bulbs.”
@Vanamonde96
@Vanamonde96 2 ай бұрын
They are the same thing basically its not z-wave and how come suddenly devices that weren’t even planned when built (smartthings) etc well some sowftware trickery plus a zigbee radio = thread Thread is forgivable for the whole CSA But matter was a promise, but not really just another way to get people to use qr codes

I was too lazy to set up home assistant on a vlan to make it secure. So I just use thread and hope that apple did some proper job implementing the firewall for their thread border router functionality. So far it works flawlessly and devices reconnect quite quickly when taken off and on power. On the other hand I really dislike that matter supports wifi as is. So if you just want to add a device using the QR code and you accidentally bought a wifi device apple will just connect it directly to your home wifi.

Hi Eric. First, it''s just great to see you back at your old cadence of videos. Your channel is IMO the best HomeKit content available and the community needs you! And this is a great video. I'd not heard about Thread support in the new iPhone and am intrigued by the possibilities like you are. While I feel that WiFi should in theory be able to be as responsive as true mesh networks, I've never found this to be the case. Devices still have trouble acquiring or "unsticking" from an access point, and migrating from access point to access point. With Thread, it seems like you could use the Thread mesh to more reliably and more responsively initiate actions (like scenes) in HomeKit and automations, just like you indicated. And that the Thread mesh should be more responsive in many (maybe most) cases than WiFi, like Zigbee can be, where every node can effectively be an access point to the mesh network and route to the other parts of the network, including to the border router, which can then access your main home network and to cloud services. Very interesting possibilities here.

It's the Twelve South Forté Stand. You need to also supply your own Apple MagSafe charging puck for it. I agree it's a great stand. I am awaiting my iPhone 15 Pro Max today. I would be surprised if this stand doesn't work with an iPhone 15 Pro. They sell it in Apple Stores in the US so maybe you can try one near you once the rush of iPhone sales dies down.

How about instead of thinking of the iPhone as a thread router, it’s actually a thread device on the network, like a light bulb. It’d be great if the iPhone, iPad, and Mac become home accessories on the thread network. I’d love to create a HomeKit “movie scene” that turns off my iMac display and sets my iPad and iPhone to do not disturb focus mode before playing a movie on my Apple TV. 🧐

I have been using HomeKit for years, and it feels like no-one at apple uses it because of how awful it is. I had hope that matter and thread would make a difference, but honestly it has only made it worse. With the current thread implementation you end of up with splintered routers everywhere it is crazy so many large companies involved with this can't make a standard that works. I don't need or want another thread device from apple I just want them to make work what they have.

It only took 2 years longer than necessary to get 6E. Wi-Fi 7 will be certified standard at the end of the year. We should've had 6E on iPhone 13 Pro series and Thread on the 14 Pro series. It just feels like Apple doesn't care about connectivity at all (Lightning USB 2.0 since 2012). I have no clue why we never got a Lightning USB 3.0 upgrade around 2017. It's really annoying because connectivity improvements are essential on Pro devices especially when you consider the price tag of the Pro iPhones, it's not like they have limited margins to worry about!

@owenashcroft8167
@owenashcroft8167 9 ай бұрын
I sort of agree, especially given the price point of the iPhones, but Apple also hasn’t ever really been an early adopter of technology that it isn’t explicitly pushing. WiFi’s 6E, while available is far from ubiquitous, given that most people are still relying on the WiFi 5 at best because their free modem from their isp is ancient. So I get why the chip wasn’t included, it would push the cost up to Apple and relatively few people would use it, and even for those who do day to day you’d probably not notice the boost unless you’re a serious power user or in a really cluttered wireless neighbourhood

I’ve never actually run into the problem where I need this to have a good experience to turn on the lights. My workaround is an advanced technique known as “flipping the light switch”, it’s a tough one to master but it’s well worth it imo, saves on money and works immediately 100% of the time, plus it doesn’t require me to talk to a machine to turn on the lights (thus filling the air with sounds that can interrupt what others are doing around me)

Good for you, but then why are you watching this video? If all you care about is turning lights on/off then a smart system is probably not for you, but there are many other features that only a smart system can give, and that’s incredibly valuable to those who find those features useful. My lights change their colour temperature automatically during the day depending on time/brightness/ambient light levels, and that alone is a feature I’m never willing to go without. It’s more than just a minor convenience, it greatly improves my health in the dark winter. That’s just one example. Plus, voice commands are just one of many ways to control these systems. No need to use them if you don’t want to.
