omar Dont confuse the matter. California isn’t an economic powerhouse because it’s run by liberals. It’s an economic powerhouse because it has easy trade by sea, from the border, has amazing agriculture in the center, and its cheap land and low taxes from back in the day made it an economic power house. California is great DESPITE the government, not because of it.
@RA-xx4mz
@RA-xx4mz 3 жыл бұрын
omar Of course it makes sense. The government is not the society. The government is not the economy. Individual Californians are doing a great job of doing their work and living put everyday lives. Our government is leeching off our hard work and people who don’t know any better let them take credit for our work. California’s government is Michael Scott. Our branch is doing great because we have great people, not because we have a great manager.

It’s because they just can’t comprehend how voting for positive-sounding things like ‘Equality, Unity, Desegregation, & Inclusiveness’ could possibly result in the mass-degradation of their city.. so they continue to blame it on something else.. & Mainly republicans, 🙄 because they also absolutely REFUSE to accept the fact that anything good could ever result from ‘racist, xenophobic, bigoted, capitalism.’ Even tho (despite whatever you call it) THOSE are the exact same principles that keep the slums out of sight & the streets safe. They won’t hear of it.. but also aren’t willing to actually live-out the ‘unification’ they voted for when an illegal drug-addict starts 💩ing outside their window. 🤣 Then they WANT segregation, but wouldn’t dare say that.. so they just move quietly and promote their ‘progressive’ ideology elsewhere.. (& because shaming other people who feel the same way they do ..makes them feel a little better about themselves.)😂 Either that, or they’re genuinely ignorant enough to believe that none of those homeless people are a lost cause by choice.. and that they all could have a chance ..if only they weren’t so ‘oppressed’ by republican ‘fear-mongering.’ ..so one again, they move & vote blue. 💥🙄🔫

I first noticed a change in Los Angeles in late 2014. I saw how people become increasing bitter and cynical. By 2016, I left for a year and went to Orlando and did some traveling overseas. In 2018, I was back full time. I went through a grieving process and when Covid happened, I left. I knew LA was only going to get worse. I put everything in storage. I came back and moved my storage to AZ. When I come to LA now, I see how people are clinging to the bragging rights to say they live in LA. The angry hostile people, the fires, the cost of living and steady decline of the beautiful place I always loved is too much for me. I have been spending a lot of time in Las Vegas and I am considering making this my permanent home as well.

I can certainly appreciate the sentiments you've shared. I moved to Los Angeles, California back in 2011 and I have never witnessed the levels of homelessness, urban decay, and predation that I saw in places like Skid Row and other parts of the city. My car was broken into twice, the rent for a small one-bedroom studio apartment was $1K. It was an interesting experience, but to make a life there? No, thank you!

I left NYC end of August of this year. I lived in one of the best neighbourhoods in Manhattan for over 11 years, and as a woman, I felt completely unsafe once everything with COVID started to unfold. The amount of young homeless people in the streets is heart wrenching. The fact that mental and emotional wellbeing are such an after thought in the US is mindboggling. I had contemplated leaving for a few years, but couldn't bring myself to leave given the calibre of the things you have access to in NYC ain terms of education, business, and network. In July, I was attacked in the streets 3 times during grocery runs, and that pushed me to pack my bags and move to Europe. Best decision of my life.

I live in New Mexico, and we've seen an increase in Californian's move here. The problem is is that people are selling their homes in California and buying homes for a fraction of the cost, and still having money left over. The dilemma is that the real estate is being bought up so quickly, that the prices on homes has drastically increased (supply and demand) and made it very difficult for the citizens who grew up here to afford homes. There aren't many large companies here, and jobs are hard to come by. The New Mexican people have always been fairly hospitable, but I have noticed lately that conversations of Californian's moving here is mostly negative. We even have a billboard that says "New Mexico is not California, and we like it that way."

This is happening in Idaho right now, too. Locals don't have a chance to match Californians who are paying thousands OVER the asking price with cash. Notice the difference in taxing income (how most people get by) and wealth (this is where rich people get their money from). Yes, the Income tax is too high, but it is how most people make their money, wealth tax is either very low or non existent, because the rich are powerful enough to block any such tax. Of course brain donating Republicans and their voters aren't helping in improving the situation for the majority of the people.

Those are state tax rates. Don't you guys up in Canada have provincial tax rates? In California, those tax rates fund a poorly mandated state wide road and freeway system, which is clogged and congested, social services like Medicaid which are about 50/50 split between the state of California and the U.S. Federal government, a rapidly spiraling out of control homelessness and destitution epidemic with the state failing to adequately provide for them, and instead writing ridiculous laws like ones in L.A. that make it legal for a homeless person to pitch a tent in someone's front lawn (while it is illegal to live in your car and park on on-street residential parking), and the kicker is the homeowner can't do nuthing 'bout it. Let's not forget a statewide electrical grid that experiences rolling and frequent blackouts, and some of the highest fuel and energy prices in the nation, among god knows many others. So, as you can see, the taxpayers of the great Golden State receive *_top-notch services_* in exchange for some excessive tax rates, compared to other U.S. states at least.

L.A. and SF have massively abused property taxes as a way to fund personal interests. Bad voting decisions 20 years ago caught up with an aging population who locked in rates that benefited themselves. Moved to Cali in 2002 and it was tremendously expensive yet native Californians kept saying the COL was reasonable. 🤔 As new props popped up and got approved for other tax increases, those who voted for low taxes on properties of a certain age/locale didn’t care. It wasn’t until they moved that the sweet deal they had went sour. Some of the things they voted for in the 90s and early 2000s weren’t adjusted for inflation, thus making it messy. Politicians with self interests that helped them gentrify neighborhoods and milk reclassified blocks of homes came next. I left and moved back to Cali in 2018 and live inland. Less problems, very clean, etc. Buuuuttt... I’m leaving Cali next year because I miss my home state of Tennessee...

I'd say it's only a matter of maybe 10 years before Texas becomes the next California. Which frankly is a good thing for the state despite the politicization people will bring to the discussion. Probably the main reason California is failing is its utter failure to address the housing crisis. If that was solved, there'd be much lower cost of living, less homelessness, etc. It's less about Democratic policies ruining things and more about ending NIMBYism, which is frankly a stupid view shared by people of all political backgrounds (though specifically progressive Democrats in California of course). Texas won't have this issue for a while due to the amount of land there, but it will happen if they don't learn from California's mistakes.

@Sir We Are About to Die I disagree with what you said about having nice weather in LA is an extra premium that has to be paid. LA has always had nice weather and living there was a LITTLE more expensive that living in for example the midwest. Because people of my parents generation (1960's-70s) who left the midwest to live SF or LA were normal working people who were living in California were making it just fine because of the slightly high wages. But something happened in the mid-late 1990's where a switch got flipped and cost of living especially housing started doubling and tripling every couple years so now 25~ years later you can't buy a shack in SF for under $1.5 million or a decent house in LA for under $1 million while wages for normal working class people has been pretty much stagnant. How in the hell is someone making 40-50K a year going to pay a million dollar mortgage or a 2K-3K in rent? Similar things happened in NYC and other areas around the same time. I guess my point is LA has always had nice weather but something else happened in this country to drive these prices, this level of poverty, etc. and I just don't know what exactly happened. It wasn't always like this.

When a state provides massive welfare, that creates an incentive for poor homeless people to flock into that state from all over the US, until it gets to a point where the system breaks, the taxes get too high but it can never fully cater for the welfare system. That's basically, what is happening. I compare it to what we have here in Kenya. We have thousands of charity organizations from Europe and the US giving massive donations to people here. There are people who literally live off of the donations instead of putting more effort at employment or business (some literally choose to continue living in slums because the only way to continue getting aid is to remain poor).

There are so many people here that don't see the systemic issues that force people to make this choice, if employment has such little incentive that people would "choose to remain poor" because they're not better off than their current condition, maybe its a critique of how little incentive there is in employment. Maybe it means wages are so low that it's not worth all the trouble. If we don't look at the problem this way, your only solution is to take away the support and give people the very kind choice between starvation and death vs a miserable life low wage labor that barely improves their current condition. Or we can incentive working by making it more attractive and its benefits greater.

Kind of hit the nail of the head with housing prices. It's zoning laws that creates expensive housing. If a parking space, green space, and minimum living space are part of any development, you've set the bar for housing above what many people can afford and then act shocked when they are on the street. And in the pipeline right now are requirements that homes be natural gas free and have electric car charging. Guess how much affordable housing will get then.

@@jd8184 not sure where in my comment I stated homeless are homeless because of depression. Perhaps they have mental health issues because of their financial situation, how do you pay for that $3000 rent? With the money you get taxed higher on... which therefore leads to financial issues which CAN then lead to mental health issues.
@jd8184
@jd8184 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardf1157 then what are you even saying: "so increased depression, anxiety etc." - this seems to imply those mental factors cause homelessness The problem here is you are either intentionally or unintentionally conflating different types of mental problems. When Graham says mental issues hes talking about really serious problems like addiction, hallucination. You are talking about depression/anxiety, which are not nearly as damaging. The right answer is that higher cost of living can cause homelessness which can lead to drug addiction which can lead to serious mental disorders. But then the culprit would be higher rent/food prices. These are mostly caused by the amount of people living in these large metro areas. Taxes are but a small factor here, if we are being honest. If taxes were the only culprit then you would see the problem all over cali and not only in the la area or the bay area

Take a long hard look at how CA got to having the highest taxes, the greatest population of homelessness, high crime, filth on the roads from border to border and people leaving in droves. They are the largest and best example in the US of the failed social experiment. Progressive policy will ultimately cause a collapse because eventually the people bearing the burden of wealth redistribution to fund "from those according to their ability; to those according to their need" shrug off the burden. They either move or become one of the needy. Eventually there comes a tipping point where there is no one left with the ability to support those with the need and the system collapses. CA could have been a great state still but for the masses believing that it is ok to steal the wealth of those who create it, and excuse it away with "they are rich, they can afford it," thought processes. So, if you want NV to end up like CA, keep voting in those progressives.

The issue is the quantity of homeless outgrew the speed at with the government can implement solutions. It happened in Seattle and Portland as well and Denver Colorado where I live. Because they’re desirable cities the cost of living skyrockets (for example, more than half of the current subdivision of aurora didn’t exist in 2010, it hadn’t expanded to where it is now. It doubled in size alone in 10 short years) People underestimate that cost and get in their car and move, filling the state with people who likely will end up homeless or involved with crime EVEN IF THEY HAVE A FULL TIME JOB. Over 200k people move to California each month, and it takes multiple months to build 1 shelter that can house 1000 homeless Years to train social workers to help the mentally ill. No amount of money can correct that, the cures take months and the illness can take just DAYS
