Thank you for saying that about heat damage/heat 'training'. If your curl is altered/loosened from heat usage, it is heat damaged. I truly believe some people are in denial about that. Just because you have some texture left and it isn't completely straight, doesn't mean it isn't heat damaged. The amount of loosening just denotes the severity of the damage NOT that you don't have heat damage. I'm amazed at how much people don't get that concept.

The salon stylist I went to told me to "heat train" my 4c hair by coming to get a silk press every month. And she's "natural" herself. I said no,I did end up going to get my hair silk pressed a second time by her and my hair never reverted back. This was July. Then in October I had it flat ironed as a last minute look. My hair is almost mid back length and now I have to cut it off and start over. I know better now. I miss my afro so much.

Yesssss! My cousin is a straight natural, but she doesn't see herself that way. She claims to have her hair and edges "trained" not to revert and constantly complains about twistouts/washngos/braidouts not looking right. Duh....your hair is damaged by the heat.

ah...believe some stylist would disagree Sis...because hair has been heat trained to purposely loosen the texture/curl pattern (hence the definition of Heat Training)...dose not always mean heat damage...........one can still have a healthy head of hair with a looser curl pattern...can't lump it all in one pot...think it's a beautiful thing if a Sis purposely wants to heat train their hair....or if a Sis only wants to rock a straight style every now and again..the real beauty is choice..and if you do plan to use heat do your research to know what you are doing or what your stylist is doing

I don't wear my hair straightened myself, but shrunken hair is very prone to single strand knots. You avoid them by never letting your hair dry unstretched. That's what the washday twists are for. It took me a while to realise people didn't just do them for the chunky twist or twist out aesthetic. I love to style my natural hair and wear it open most of the time. I experience the least shedding when I do this. Also airdrying hair can be very dehydrating to the strands. Heat can help you seal your cuticles and keep the moisture in. You can sit under a hooded dryer to dry your natural hairstyles or use your blowdryer. I do this and I never have to remoisturise my hair between washdays.

@@stepheq7964 hi! One thing it could be is the shampoo.. some shampoo brands have a few ‘callout bomb ingredients’ but the cleansers are overpowering… that could be a contributor to experiencing strands getting tangled-knots. Second, ensuring your products are sealing your cuticles. Raised cuticles Can knot easier because they catch on each other… shampoos naturally raise up the cuticles. So following up with a leave-in or tea-rinse that is pH balanced to close your cuticles. It doesn’t ‘coat’ the hair-it actually closes the cuticles along your strands…. Aloe Vera does this AMAZINGLY so you can add that to your spray bottle and use as a leavein after you shampoo/condish/towel dry. Apple cider vinegar also will seal cuticles…however due to its strong smell-you can only use that in the shower when you’re going to rinse it and follow up with something that smells good. So the aloe Vera juice is more practical for daily use… By the way-aloe Vera juice looks and feels like water and has no Scent. The takeaway is that we can do all the steps-but if we don’t review the ingredients of the products-we might not see the results. The quality matters.

The thing is for people with kinky curls being a “straight hair natural” is highly beneficial if you take the correct steps to prevent damage. The reason kinky curlies straighten their hair is mostly because it’s a low maintenance style (if you can maintain it at least 2 weeks) and our ends don’t have the chance to shrink up and knot around each other.

As a straight hair natural I think I cracked the code, to having healthy natural hair while using heat. You gotta do keratin or hair botox treatments they help strengthen your hair and fill in the cuticles and your silk presses last longer therefore you don’t have to straighten your hair often that’s what is it

I didn't know i was a straight hair natural either. I stopped getting relaxers in 2014 and had just been straightening my hair every month. I wasn't doing any type of hair care. My hair remained shoulder length. Once I found out about deep conditioning and split ends I obtained a bit more length but only slightly pass my shoulders. In 2019 I don't know what video I watched but it made me not want to straighten my hair and that is when I say I started my natural hair journey because I was actively learning and taking care of my hair. Now I staighten it like 3 times a year to make sure it's looking healthy all around but I cannot fathom going back to straight hair for more than two weeks. I love the versatility of our hair. It's amazing.

This used to be me - I was a straight "hair" natural. I put hair in quotes because I literally had like 4 hairs by the end of 3 years. LOL. My hair got less and less dense over the 3 years that I wore it straight all the time. And my gosh the SMELL. Many of us try to ignore and pretend the smell is not there, but baby it STANK when you don't wash it. Wearing straight hair had me always delaying a wash in order to maintain the straightness. My poor abused hair rebelled and shed itself away every day until my ponytail was a sad string. Eventually I had to do a big chop. It was all in my mind that straight hair looks better. Nobody can't tell me that my AFRO ain't BOMB. It's the best hair of my life. xoxo

I wonder if heat damage is caused by the tools people use to straighten their hair because, as a child, my mother pressed my hair with pressing oil or royal crown grease every two weeks and I never had heat damage! I know this because my shrinkage was ubreal! My hair always reverted back to its natural state. That old stove steel hotcomb and hot curlers were the only things she used! I had the same method for years until I went to the beauty shop!

I guess im so used to relaxer/flat ironing my hair since a teen and that's why i feel better with straight hair, because that's when i feel i look like me. Now the older i got i stopped using the relaxers because im lazy and that was an extra step i had to do, so i guess i became natural due to being lazy😂. I tried the afro with water/cream and i got tired of doing that everyday/picking out the afro, so i started with the use of flexirods and i really loved how i looked, the afro stayed curly for days and thought that's how i would wear my hair. Yea no my hair broke off and i just cant believe i didn't notice but i guess the afro was hiding it. So i went back to just flat ironing my hair once a month, putting it in a bun and i was able to keep up with split ends and didn't have any single stranded nots anymore. But then my scalp developed flakes/i started trying to workout and got tired of my hair puffing up/getting dry/flakes. So now i wear my hair cornrowed and slap a wig on and go on about my day. This hair stuff is just tedious and i don't have the patience anymore. I'm not trying to sit in anyone's chair for hours getting a hairdo or braids, no more sitting under that hot ass dryer for hour(s) and no more losing sleep because I'm trying to sleep a certain way not to mess up my hair

+ Coco Monday If your hair hates Aloe, you might be low porosity. I know because my hair hates Aloe too and I'm low porosity. The scientific reason is that Aloe (along with apple cider vinegar) lowers the hairs ph and causes the cuticle to seal/lay flat, which is why it's great to seal in moisture for high porosity hair. But if you're low porosity the cuticles are already sealed/lay flat so adding Aloe just makes it worse. Also, Aloe can act like a protein or have protein in it, so if your protein sensitive(like me😭) it can make hair feel rough & dry. I learned all this the hard way.😭

Hey, new subscriber here 🙋🏽. I have natural waist length hair but wasn't always this way. I always had long hair but never knew my hair was curly due to my family relaxing my hair at a very early age. I also could never get it pass the middle of my back. From middle school to my mid 20's, I would always cut, color, relax and straighten my hair. I ended up cutting most of it off and that's when I learned that my hair is 3C/4A. I kept my hair natural and started wearing wigs for the different colors and styles. Once I learned how to take care of my hair, it started to grow like crazy. I do straighten my hair, maybe 2-3 times a year now. This is mostly in the fall/winter and after a very good conditioning and lot's of heat protection. This has really helped with keeping my hair heat damage free.

I haven't been a straight hair natural since high school. What I will say is, I noticed I would always have my hands in my hair when it was straight and always brushing/combing it. When I wear my hair in its curly state, I don't touch it until it's time for a wash (at the end of the week). Also, I think I look better with my curly hair. I get a lot of compliments and it's what I feel comfortable and confident in. When it's straight, I'm always worried about whether it looks frizzy and if it's reverting back.

I get it and agree. I will say that as a natural mostly wash and gos in summer and straight in winter. I have noticed because I work out that I get more shedding in winter with straight hair due to my root reversion from working out and sweating in my scalp. Also I made sure I didn’t let it rub up against cotton and wool clothing- that is a big help with tangling and breakage. However I did one time not workout for a month with my straight hair and saw significantly less shedding and more length retention vs my summer curly hair. So my point is I think straight hair for me contributes to length retention if you remove or at least are aware of some factors. The fact that you don’t work out ( you told me that in an earlier post) probably puts you in the advantage column. Your hair is beautiful so I say keep up the good work. Cuz it is work😀

Im a licensed hairdresser and there's no way I can't wear my hair not straight because its very thick and long 4c hair like a spring and is very unmanageable curly and dry. Heat only damage the hair if it is too high and you guys are not professionally taught how to use heat properly so it's damaging. No I don't think you should over straighten hair but I love my heat and i have healthy luxurious hair. Your hair is shedding because it's not strong at the roots from nutrition deficiency not from straightening.
@milami.

From my personal experience continuous use of heat is not the best for my hair….Even when professionally done. Also I don’t have any nutritional deficiency and I haven’t had any in the past. Different strokes for different folks. I’m not against straightening my hair I just no longer do it religiously. Do whatever works for you.

@@Chin715 I like for my hair to be straighter at the ends when blowdried. This helps me avoid snagging and tearing. After using the dryer my ends were a little too kinky for me. Based on the videos I watched I thought I might be able to achieve the results I was looking for but I never really did. The only way to get the results I was looking for was to add more heat with a flat Iron or blowdryer with a comb attachment. People gave me suggestions but it was too much effort for how much I spent. It seems to work great for other people...just not my cup of tea.

I am a new wig wearer. I am grateful for the discovery. You said it, I can finally give my natural 4b hair a break and still have the option of a curly style, straight style, braid style, etc. in the form of a wig. I was buying human hair wigs that last longer, but are more expensive. I just discovered synthetic quick weave wigs that mimic the blowout of our natural hair. It has been game changing - a whole new style for $30 or $40? I can’t believe it. I feel like an Instagram model when I get a new hairdo in the mail, lol. Underneath the wig I use chebe with a leave-in conditioner and twist it using the LOC method, every Monday. I put a black plastic cap over it and a wig cap on top of it, to protect my natural hair from the wig. I leave my perimeter out to protect my edges whether the wig is full-lace or a u-part (I like u-part wigs the most because they look more natural, but the full lace allows me to give my u-part a break too). My hair has grown immensely under the wig and I am grateful for discovering wigs and taking the plunge to wear them. I am in my mid-40’s and have spent my life natural, getting press and curls when I was younger, then having it flat ironed, then on to the round brush Brazilian type blowout of pressing my hair. I am glad to stop straightening it. Wigs have given me that grace.

What the heck!!! No one ever asks me anything about mine. Is it because l’m lighter and the texture is decidedly different because all of this is so insulting to us as women of color, especially when we know the history and the ethnic diversity within our culture.
