As someone who comes from poverty and was adopted into a white home I can relate to this a lot. I moved from East LA to Silverlake, it may not be that far away but it is a world away. I have nothing to go back to (my biological parents passed away) but sometimes I do miss those days. Yes, I was hungry and yes most of my childhood was watching brain cancer take me mamá away and it was a struggle but I do miss the community. I miss the cracked pavement, the tamalera that passed every morning, the barred windows and doors. I miss knowing everyone's name, inviting the crossing guard for café after school was over. I misss that life but now I have opportunities that I would not of otherwise had. My adoptive parents adore me and I them, they can afford to send to private school and any university of my choice. I know live in a three story house with three rooms all to my self. Instead of iron gates in front of my apartment there are ivy covered walls in front of my house. Objectively life is better and I am happy and I love my new parents but sometimes I miss my old life. It's okay for me to miss it, doesn't mean I'd go back I'm completely changed person. Let this guy grieve for what once was and miss that old life

Beautiful sentiments! I miss my island too but I choose not to go back to live there because I came to NY during my teens and now I have established myself in NJ with a husband and children who know nothing about island life. It's not an easy task to just get up and move when the rest of your family, parents, siblings, in laws, friends, church, etc..are all nearby. Also living on an island with a turbulent economy is very difficult and I have worked hard for what I have here. I have visited and will continue to do so. And even though I'm a bit sad when I leave Puerto Rico I always have my wonderful memories.

My father left Puerto Rico when he was 18 years old for New York. He misses it and he always talks about his childhood there to my brother and I. I have never been there, but going there would be a dream come true

This made me so emotional. I was never close to my Puerto Rican side growing up as my family is mixed and I moved around a lot. My dad even stopped speaking the language after marrying my mum. But I moved to Canada for university and made friends with many many latinos and that motivated me to reconnect with my boricua side. I visited la isla 2 weeks ago and it was such a spiritual experience for me. I never felt so connected to a place before and I felt like home there. It was definitely life-changing and I will be coming back as soon as I can ❤

last night i spent alot of time thinking about whether "home" to my dad is back in old san juan, or if it's here in the states. i'm not sure which answer leaves me with a greater sense of sadness, him not feeling at home in the only place i've known, or if he no longer feels a great connection with the beautiful island that he was raised on, but left 30 years ago to make a better life for himself.

i moved back to puerto rico because i couldn't make it well in america, ive missed being here so much, the salsa on the cleaning weekends, the rosters at 5am, the coquis singing at night, & that annoying reggaetón music we can't avoid but secretly love. even thought it has its ups & downs amo mi isla y donde sea que yo esté siempre la tendré en mi corazón y con orgullo puertoriqueño sigo caminando❤🇵🇷

To my Boricuas here.. if y all see someone posting a racist or ignore comment here. Let them be no matter how much you want to knock them out for being stupid. Let him be. Don't waste your energy on them. Just so love to the video. An to the ones posting negative comments go ahead. At the end of it all yall just showing your ignorance. An if that's what you want to show the world who you are then by all means proceed.

My grandparents were Puerto Rican, my father is a state side born Puerto Rican, my mother was a resident there when they met and her brother lived his entire adult life there until he died. Every year until he passed away we would go and visit him, visit the rain forest, the beaches, the mountains, & the caves. We would eat at the roadside stands and my parents would shut us up by giving us stalks of sugar cane, bags of quenepas, mangoes, and young coconuts (kinda wish my hands were still small enough to dig all the meat out like I used to) and I remember falling asleep to the sound of the coqui & rainfall. My parent's little family... my family started because of that little island - it's home. I haven't been back since I was 12 & I can't speak fluent or even conversational spanish... it died with my generation - but it's still my island, and I miss it.

An honor to be raised in this island as a child, to walk amongst my abuelas garden, to chase the chickens and climb the orange trees from my neighbors yard; to sleep every night, with the windows open the doors unlocked and the coqui’s singing their songs. Thank you Puerto Rico, siempre en mi corazón.

This made me cry a bit. I had to leave Puerto Rico in March because I couldn't find a job. But I've already made plans to go back for the second time. It's hard because all my friends are back home on the island and the big city can be very grey and people in it cold at times. But hopefully someday ii can go back to live again. Home will always be Puerto Rico. The warm people and it's vivacious culture will always be part of me.

This is such a lovely video and then the racists roll up in here leaving negative comments that have nothing to do with what he was talking about. I fail to understand why anyone would waste they're time watching something they don't like. Go do something better with your time instead of spreading hate for no damn reason.

Some of ya'll are dumb af. You can miss the island, but your economic situation might not let you go back, you might have a stable job, or your dream can't be archived in the island, no todo es #yonomequito. La situación en la isla esta difícil, y no nos hace menos boricuas querer mejorar tu situación, porque hasta donde yo se ninguno de los que esta peleando le va a pagar la luz a el (y a los otros que se fueron).
