In this video I talk about why I think physical media is important to have in some form if you value your media. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Just a reminder, just because you bought a movie on digital, does not mean you actually own it. Once that movie app shuts down, you will not get your money back. Buy physical copies now, and save them

The same goes for physical media, yeah sure you own it.. for now. Physical media is subject to time, and time destroys everything. VHS detonation is at a rate of 25% per 10 years. DVD’s are a little Betty not by much. They can last 30 years, up to 100 if you never play them and keep them in a perfect environment where the temperature of the room and the humidity are carefully monitored. At the end of the day physical media is carbon based and which means it will be eventually eaten by time.

Another great thing about owning the physical media (be it paper books, CDs or VHS tapes) is that the content can't be changed if it becomes "problematic" for someone.

Yes, although VHS degrades over time in a way that digital copies don't. The CDs and DVDs can and do degrade over time, but it's a fairly long period of time and certainly longer than buying DRM infested digital copies.

I'm more a DVD guy, but I appreciate everything you're saying about the value of physical media. In another generation, everything will be a download or subscription. Some boutique companies might crop up to help fill the void, but inevitably, numerous films of the second-tier variety will become scarce. Even disappear completely.

Cause I don't like these audiobooks. And I do like these streamimg apps at least the ones i can afford and you need wifi and internet to watch them and also got to pay for them in order to watch. And some streaming apps don't even have all the movies or tv shows you are looking for and don't keep movies or shows on them that long.

It's pretty powerful to actually curate your media selection to what's special rather than being buried in a lot of stuff that isn't great, which is often the thing with streaming. The most important thing about owning physical media is that it can't be taken away from you with the click of a button. If you rely on streaming to watch your favorite movies, they can literally delete (or change it) with the click of a button. And it will be gone forever. This is already being done by major streaming services. Don't let streaming giants decide which history gets to exist and which gets deleted.

It is not very hard to digitize VHS tapes and put them on a Plex server. It is just a bit time consuming, but then you can buy two hard drives to keep them on. One of the hard drives can be a backup and both hard drives take up the space as one deck of cards. I collect DVD's for my Plex server. They can be ripped and loaded up in 15min in most cases. This is cool. Another thing about owning VHS specifically is they tend to be more true to the original look of the film. I've been noticing that many blu-rays and 4Ks are actually very inaccurate when it comes to the original colors and overall tone. Things are changed, color corrected and exposure is off. In the day and age of perfect looking digital I feel a lot of labels are trying their hardest to "clean up" the film grain and scratches and older film tone that they are completely changing the movie itself. Cinematographers choose specific lighting and color choices for a reason and for that to be completely ignored and changed is not cool. Plenty of VHS tapes back in the day had cool cover art often depicting the painted or airbrushed theatrical posters of those movies which were so visually appealing while that kind of artwork started waning in the 90's with boring headshots of the principal actors in the movie. Many DVD's still had great or similar artwork to their VHS counterparts, but when Blu-rays became available and now a lot of 4K's too (and definitely artwork for streamed movies), the artwork declined significantly to merely Photoshop artwork or headshots, etc. That's why I'll always get a kick out of collecting VHS tapes or specific DVD's or Blu-rays from niche or boutique companies that still have a love for the original poster art or they commission new artwork inspired by previous artwork.

There's something really special about not only collecting, but still using old tech. My woman and I collect all kinds of stuff from the 80's/90's. I'm particular with the Tupperware and afghan blankets and throws. We're also in VHS movies from time to time. It certainly humbles you in a really awesome way, and generates a type of gratitude being absolutely fine with older things. Anyway, I've subbed. Good stuff.

I completely agree with this sentiment and I practice the same concept of owning as much physical media as possible. The only aspect I really differ in is the idea of analog over digital physical media. I vastly prefer DVD or even Blu-Ray over VHS. This is almost completely because of the degradation properties of VHS. I have a ton of nostalgia for VHS since I grew up with that form of media being the primary option for home video but sadly VHS cassettes can and will degrade over time, even to a point in which they are completely unusable. This was one of the bigger factors as to why this tech phased out. Storing them a specific way can prolong their lifespan and slow down the degradation over time but eventually it will happen. Granted DVDs, CDs, and even Blu-Rays have a lifespan as well but the lifespan of a DVD, CD, or Blu-Ray is substantially greater and these forms of media are much much easier to digitally back up to a device such as an external drive of some sort that can easily be plugged into most digital televisions, dvd or blu-ray players, or computers to watch your favorite backed up videos. After I lost the vast majority of my childhood home videos because of the degradation properties of VHS cassettes, I completely gave up on the format personally.

It is important to note that having media in digital format. The problem l lies in DRM protected media. The DRM is what stops you from burning media to disc and/or just storing it forever, in essence, it is what keeps you from truly owning your digital content. Back in the 90's the record companies tried to say it was illegal to backup your own personal music CD's to your computer, but people fought back and they lost in court. People did not make a big enough fuss during the time it became popular to buy digital movies and that is why you cannot buy and download movies to your computer DRM free. I made this comment to educate everyone in hopes we can fight to maintain the ability to purchase digital mp3's DRM free and to fight for the right to buy DRM free movies.

There is one other benefit of what you're doing. Sometimes streaming services remove movies or TV shows due to licensing issues, making it impossible to purchase until the issue is resolved. I'm totally with you on this, I have never entirely stopped using VHS or DVD, and in recent years have gone way back into it, especially as streaming is not always the superior option. A lot of stuff that I want to see, there isn't a better-looking copy online anywhere, but I can get the tape and have a good setup which makes it worthwhile to watch. I find that VHS on a CRT tends to look about as good as a DVD on a modern TV-- not hi-def, but a decent way to watch most things. One thing that really made me double down on it was when I realized that a lot of older movies were originally shot full-frame, so it would get cut down to widescreen for cinema, while the full-frame edition was used on the TV version, which usually ended up on tape as well. If something was shot in anamorphic widescreen, it would get cut it down to 4:3, so I always want the widescreen of those films whether on tape or disc.

I am not sure when but believe it will happen. I remember my parents buying our first VCR for over $200 back in the 80s. I also remember VHS at one time some costing over $50. I was thrilled when they finally started selling for $19.99 and then less and less.

What is your website? I have a couple hundred commercial VHS movies, some still sealed, you can have free if you will pick them up.I live about 25 miles from Detroit.

I used my VHS to record a few films from a streaming platform with a Dablig translation that is not available anywhere except on the streaming platform. I have several VHS machines and a few TV sets from those times. Connected to a small video wall to watch films in my garage where I run my business.

Im going to hold onto my tapes and maybe sell some one day for a good price. I have a good feeling about them. VHS ages like wine.

Okay so where did you get the dresser you store those tapes in!? I’ve got like 400 vhs tapes and need a better storage solution for them. Love the 80s/90s woodgrain, mine are piled into my childhood dressers under my NES/N64/CRTs

One disadvantage of tapes is you do not have the option of sub titles. There have been times where I had trouble understanding what was being said. Roll back and turn on sub titles and you can see what is being said.

I am an all around physical media guy. VHS/ DVDs /BlueRay/ 4kUltraHD, it’s all great! For VHS I specifically like my old SOV horror films from the 80s. Many of them I have a dvd/blueray copy of as well, but the biggest thing is censorship. So many of these movies are not available on newer formats, or if they are, minutes are cut from them. VHS offers me a way to watch them how they were intended to be viewed.

Nice man. I'm Gen Z and I've been collecting VHS tapes and dvds since 2016. You can find some pretty good deals at goodwill and local thrift stores. Now I have hundreds of tapes and discs

It might not be as noticeable on such a small screen. Whether you have a low end or a high end VCR. It's definitely worth getting a high end VCR if you are going to mess with VHS. There is a night and day difference in the quality you will get out of your movies.

Being 54 years old, I definitely have a lot of nostalgic feelings for the early days of home video. Still have some old horror titles on vhs (even a few beta as well) as well as half a dozen vcrs stashed away. Have no desire to go back to CRT televisions however. If you've ever attempted moving house with a 36" tube tv you'll probably understand why.

I still have my Laserdisc player and VHS due to color grade, unaltered film(Star Wars for example), or audio. Some, never got a DVD, Blu-Ray or 4K. I still get current stuff on Blu-Ray or 4K from Asian cinema. Current films I get on iTunes which people barely discuss. You can remove the DRM of these purchases just like DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K and also get the extras from iTunes Extra. So everytime I hear people mention physical media ownership they tend to compare it to streaming vs digital storefronts that look out for the consumer like Apple, who fought with studios for the free 4K upgrade. Unlike SONY or MS who will remove films from your library. With iTunes, you still have access to delisted films. Overall massive props on this video and love your setup.

Thanks for the kind words and sharing your experience. I didn’t know you could remove the DRM from iTunes movies. I’ll have to read more about that!

I'm glad I am not alone. I have hundreds of VHS and DVDs. I watch it on my Widescreen CRT TV in my room with my VCR DVD Combo and my Home Theater is hooked up to a VCR, DVD Player Chromecast for more digital stuff and KZfaq. and recently I bought a Blu-ray player to hook up to it because honestly this is just better. I like owning my media. the same with music. I download a lot of my music still also have them on CD Tape Vinyl and Minidisc. It's a sad world today that people choose convenience over freedom. they don't care about owning the media until suddenly the media they loved just vanished online. Now they are up in arms but it's too late at that point

Agreed with every bit you’ve said. Sounds like you have a great setup too! I’m going to make a video eventually on that topic - convenience VS freedom, and why convenience isn’t always the best thing for us. Thanks for the comment!

Hello , I have a question to people who save the VHS tapes , If somebody know the best way to preserve them ?.
@Stuart267

Sadly VHS has a relatively short lifespan. I have a film that was my fathers called Blood Voyage the tape itself is over 40 years old & is unwatchable. Not because the films shlt, which it is, but because mould sets in to VHS tapes no matter how much you preserve them. You can send your VHS movies to a specialist who will transfer them to disk as its the only way to preserve them, I own very few VHS tapes as they were so bulky & legit filled an entire room in my house growing up.
