Ex auto noise development engineer here. The acoustic foam in the tyre only helps the tyre cavity noise and I don’t feel most people would notice the reduced narrowband hum that is cavity noise. Even I wouldn’t bother as I feel it’s more marketing hype than bang for the buck. It wouldn’t even really effect the published noise dB rating on the tyre which is measured externally close to the tyre contact patch. This is dominated by the tread roar which is the broadband tyre noise you hear, mainly 600-1200Hz. So a non-acoustic foam tyre can easily be rated quieter both externally and in real terms in the cabin than ones with foam in. I won’t be paying. I found that a well fitted second seal door kit was well worth the expense and effort for my MY but be sure to clean the doors edges with isopropyl alcohol before application, or they won’t stay put and be effective. Thanks for doing the vid, you confirmed my suspicions 😊

Thanks for the comment yes thats very interesting, I honestly can't hear a difference and if I had to say either way, I'd say these are a bit more quiet. Yes thats a good idea about the door seal, I've always felt the Tesla one is a bit cheap

Hi Mark, I’m in Australia and these Michelins came with my M3SR. I have done 74,000 k’s in 2 years. I got 68,000 kilometres (45,000 miles) out of them. I live in the Sunshine Coast hinterland in Queensland and we have steep climbs and winding roads with some gravel roads as well. We have driven down to Melbourne and back three times (10,300 kilometres in total and also to Airlie Beach on the Whitsunday Coast and that’s another 3,000 k’s return with the majority being on the M1 National Highway which is an excellent road. So I have driven them on all road types and conditions. Like you I found them to be very quiet and also great in both wet and dry conditions. Recently replaced them with the same tyres with similar pricing to you (taking into account currency differences) and if I get the same distance and performance from these I’ll be very happy.

I did 63K km on my Model 3 LR in 2,5 years with stock 18" Michelin PS4. After 3 season I am looking at a new tire. But after watchin many EV tiers it seams like Hankook e-on evo is the best dedicated EV tire and Tesla uses them on 19" Highland. I am supries you didn't get those. They fit Michelin e-Primacy on 18" Highland but there so bad at wet road on test.

5:18 cheap tire question: I put Sava Intensa UHP2 tires on my front wheels. The only problem I have with them are soft sidewals, have to be carefull when going fast in corners and increased noise. They are great for driving normaly on the freeway and are blend between a sport and touring tire. Very comfortable and soft. Great dry grip and medium wet grip 100€ a piece

Hi Mark, I have gone the other way from a Michelin PS4 to the Hankook Ventus prime 4, £669.71 including 4 wheel alignment check. I wore the Michelins out in 17,000 miles. Tesla model 3 is not a heavy car if you compare to the MB and BMW equivalent performance “wet weights” as they are only quoted dry, very similar to the LR.

So.. I believe the Michelin you should have is the Pilot Sport 4 T1 which is marked for Tesla they include acoustic and high load (weight) feature sets. I am about to change mine for the first time at 60,000 kms. The handling is excellent and the noise low (even now). I have a RWD 2023 Model 3 so mine are Pilot Sport 4 T1 - 235/45ZR18 98Y Extra Load (original equipment here) Cost is high at around $460 each but I believe they are well worth it (especially given 60k life)

@mark - tyre pressures should always be set when the tyres are cold. The increase in pressure while driving is determined by friction and ambient temperature. 44-46 while driving conservatively is normal when ambient temps are @18 degrees.

I had those tyres fitted to my 2019 M3 Performance. The fronts lasted 19K miles, the rears 33K miles. The tyre pressures you quoted driving are correct when up to temperature at current conditions. One thing to look out for with them being grippier, is that they hold onto the stones so beware of stone chips to the side of the car and avoid dirty parts of the road. If not you’ll soon hear them!

Mark, my 2022 M3LR (Fremont, CA) came with Michelin Primacy MXM4 T1 tires that feature "Michelin's Acoustic Technology, which is the company's marketing name for tires with noise-canceling foam on the inner liner." I'm at 26,433 miles now, have them rotated and checked every 6 months and so far have had no issues with tread wear. The Tesla shop in Tucson which does the work hasn't indicated a need to change them, so I'm hoping for another 10k before they need replacing. These have been great tires, but I'm hoping by the time they do need replacing, there will be something even better. Just FYI from Arizona and thanks for all your videos!

My 2021 M3LR on standard 18" wheels came with MP4S tyres. It will be 2 years old in June and has done just over 13,000 miles and they are still looking pretty good. The windscreen wipers are more of a challenge in the wet than the tyres!! I have my pressure set at 44 (which I think is what Tesla recommend, although seems pretty high) and it goes up anywhere between 1-3 PSI on a longer run depending on the temperature.

The acoustic foam in the tyres are designed for american Tesla's where they have concrete roads and it supresses the road noise. There is a strech of concrete road on the M25 near the heathrow junction which you can test your tyres on, without the acoustic foam the sound is literally deafening, but how often do we drive on concrete roads? I too switched from the standard acoustic to Mich PS4 19", can't tell diff at all apart from when driving on that stretch of road

I have a MYP on original P Zeros, I can confirm these aquaplane so easily. I’m not sure if it’s the tyres alone or a combination of the low ride height of the car, the weight and the tyres. But other cars were able to easily breeze through the water at higher speeds (60/70mph), whereas I was easily 40/50mph and could feel the car moving and not stable.
@MBrown
@MBrown Жыл бұрын
Oh sorry to hear that, someone else told me that about the P Zeros, which is strange as they're meant to be a great tyre!
@billalnawaz
@billalnawaz Жыл бұрын
Update: after doing a little more research. MYP has a staggered set up, the rear tyres are very wide. The wider the tyre the more prone a car is to aquaplaning. Additionally, forums on P Zeros state that they’re not that great in the rain. I can recall even in very light rain, lighting up and wheel spinning all 4 tyres despite not having applied too much throttle. But then again I do always drive the thing around in full Sports mode all the time lol.

I just ordered a set of Falken Azenis FK460s 235 40 R19. Got them at Discount Tire; love that place. Go to tire rack and compare the stopping distance in the dry and wet and the lap times on these vs the Michelin PS4S. I drive on a windy road daily home and in the wet I think 6 ft shorter stopping distance can make a big difference in one's safety. I know the Michelin's are more of a premium brand and Falken is considered lower tier but I look at the performance more than the brand. I've owned Pilot Sports in the past on my BMW and they were great. No hate to Michelin, just more so praising at a bit of a lower price that the Falken's provide a bit more overall so I'm giving them a try instead but if these didn't exist I'd lean to the Michelin's then the Contis and the Pirellis thereafter imho.

I’ve the same car as you with the 19s and standard Hankooks. I’m at 28000 miles and don’t drive like a granny so doing really well. I can’t fault the tyre tbh across the whole driving experience and just feel a full high performance tyre would ne unnecessary despite performing better than the Hankook. With that wear rate I’m likely to stick with the Hankooks and I reckon they maybe slightly cheaper at £200pt. Usefully timed video for me!

I don't care if it's a Tesla or not, the tyres I have are XL extra load rated and whilst 18" rims, I got 4x Goodyear Asymmetric 6's for £360 fitted, so where does the rest of that price come from? I’m a semi-retired vehicle dynamics manager, everyone should realise that generally, vehicles are developed on one make and model of tyre (usually in conjunction with a tyre OEM). This means that all key attributes are tuned with these tyres. This includes (but not limited to), dry and wet brake performance, stability control, NVH, subjective feel - response, turn in, etc. This also applies to other consumable items such as brake discs, pads, dampers, etc. the vehicle is homologated with these components. It’s only after launch that other manufacturers homologate their parts and they only have to meet lower legislative requirements to enable them to sell them. For these reasons, I always stick with the OE parts.
@KC-bv9kf
@KC-bv9kf 18 күн бұрын
However, the OEM may not be the best tires that the manufacturer could have chosen because of cost, which is completely reasonable. So if a consumer is willing to pay more for the better tested tires, then why not?
