Going by the tarnishing of the hardware on that guitar, I would almost expect a guitar like that to be listed as 'pre-enjoyed'. When the hardware is worn but the paint is still in good condition it really speaks to someone having spent a long time playing and taking care with the guitar.

I'm glad that you use the correct term of "multiscale" rather than Fanned Fret. They're not the same thing, and there's a very important reason for this. A lot of people use the term "fanned fret" without understanding the implication of what one is, and yes, ideas blur over time but bear with me. "Fanned Fret" refers to the original Curtis Novak way of laying out frets as per his original patent, and existing active trademark. This lays out frets using a triangle so that if you stretched out the line of each fret in two dimensions, they would all coincide at one point. This only works if the strings are parallel, which they very rarely are in a guitar. A multiscale (or "compound scale") instrument takes the two outer strings - with whatever taper they have - and draws lines between where the scales are on each, interpolating the strings in between geometrically. We should always be mindful not to used "fanned frets" as it just implies that we are talking about a specific fret layout system, when we don't in fact use it.

I met Ralph Novak in the mid to late eighties when he was still working on his fan-fret prototype. Which was a modified Telecaster. The reason being is that there was enough room on the tele bridge to accommodate the saddle length difference between the scale lengths. The idea was that you could get Fender lows, Gibson highs, and a _Danelectro_ mids. When I played it, the only thing Ralph said to me was, "just don't look down.". Which helped. We discussed modifying a Les Paul, but at that time the hardware required and the work involved just didn't make it practical. I still can't look down when I play one.

I own a Korean Ormsby Hype GTR 7 string and a Custom shop 8 String Ormsby Hypemachine. I also own Mayones, PRS, and Ibanez guitars, and in all honesty, my favourite are the Ormsby's. Even the Korean one is my go to 7 string. They just sound, play and feel the best!

I was fully expecting that guitar to have a bolt-on neck. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't.

Here's what I'd do with upwards of 27 frets (yes I know there are 29 on that guitar): I'd tune to C# standard. Then I'd get my capo. I'd learn any Slayer songs that have guitars tuned to C#, then I'd attach a capo at the 1st fret and play along to Death songs because Chuck Schuldiner used to tune to D standard. I could also play along to Metallica's Sad But True in that tuning. Then move the capo up another fret to play Slayer because all their albums after Show No Mercy used guitars tuned ½ a step down. Then I could play the all the Metallica and Sepultura songs I know in standard tuning with the capo on the 3rd fret. I'd still have a minimum of 24 frets for solos.

I have a BTB805ms and LOVE IT! Multiscale is super easy to adjust to, I never even felt a difference when swapping.

For the nut, use super glue, not wood glue. Reason being is that wood glue expands as it dries, it’s really easy to use way too much and end up with a mess, and it’s also more meant for bonding wood to other wood, not wood to some other material like plastic / bone / etc. With superglue it dries right away too so you don’t need to worry about dry time.

Thick super glue (30 Stewmac) typically works best for nut repairs. Wood glue is old school but it’s been found that super glue is far more effective for slippery modern nut materials like TUSQ XL. Super glue (CA/Cyanoacrylate) also sets rock hard, whereas wood glue is designed to flex with wooden joints which you don’t want in a structural or musical sense for a nut fixture. The tiniest dabs on the fretboard face is enough, but do not let it get any where near the ledge of the fretboard because if you ever have to clean it off, you don’t want that to show

The term "Scale length" actually defines the measurement distance from the Nut to the Saddles. The "String Length" is the measurement from the fixed connections of the strings, usually the Tuners, and where the Ball Ends strings are fastened. The string length and string gauges define the overall "string tension" when tuned to a particular pitch. A longer string length requires a higher overall tension to be tuned up to the same pitch as a shorter string. The Reverse Headstock on many Baritone, and other Guitars, takes advantage of this physical property, as it allows good string tension and tone without requiring an excessively high string gauge. Short-scale Basses try to compensate for their shorted string length by increasing the string gauge, which rarely works well.

I think this might be my favorite of all of your guitars. Looks great, sounds great.

The fanned fret guitar seems like something somebody would have tried to design in the 80’s and failed miserably, but low and behold it does work like a damn charm. Sometimes physics is on your side.

I'd say that multiscale makes sense for 7+ strings on guitar and 5+ on bass to get that extra tension in those thick strings, although the fanfret does have it's merits on a 6 string for comfort.

I bought an ormsby a year ago or so and I really like the multi scale. It’s extremely comfortable and chugs feel good with more tension. I don’t really notice a tonal difference though.

I've never played a fanned-fret guitar, but I imagine they would be more ergonomic due to how the frets line up with your fingers. As if you need to move your arm less to change location on the neck to play in a comfortable position. Plus, they look cool as hell.

The reason we call it "multi-scale" instead of "fanned fret" is because "fanned fret" is a Ralph Novax trademark. As per baritones, Agile makes 30" scale guitars.

I've always thought that multi-scale guitars look cool & would love to try one. I'm mostly an acoustic player tho' & there aren't many MS acoustics on the market... As the idea has become popular, there are some cheaper ones out there, maybe I'll pick up a used electric if I see one I can afford.

I own an Ormsby TX 7-string, and I wish the neck pickup was also a humbucker. Maybe in the future I will change it, but it is fine for now.

Beautiful guitar! I had the same Ormsby in white, really regret selling it.... I actually loved the neck single coil though, best single coil I've ever used, ran circles around my Fender USA noiseless.

I love your Ormsby guitars, and I get a pang of Aussie pride to see how much you love 'em as well. I've been a subscriber since your Rob Chapman video and I've enjoyed your content ever since. I reckon your restring format is great as I'm as much of a gear nut as the next guitarist (i.e. obsessive hoarder level). I've got a bunch of mediocre guitars that I should put up on Reverb or Marketplace and invest in at least one Ormsby guitar. It's quality over quantity, right? 😉

I hate to be that guy but more the purpose of a baritone is to be able to tune lower without having increased tension. My 28 5/8" baritone that's in A with the higher gauge strings have relatively the same tension as my strat tuned to E.

The biggest problem with fanned frets especially if you have a 7 or 8 string is that the differing scale lengths need it's own separate neck relief. Unless you have two truss rods and literally torque the neck into shape by force, it will never have the correct neck relief and action. You set the action right for the low string and the high strings are a mile high, you do the opposite and the low strings bottom out on the frets. It's absolutely maddening.

It's not my type of guitar at all but I can appreciate it, without wanting one! I do like well played guitars that show careful ownership and the wear on the bridge typifies that. Too often, I see oxidised and tarnished metal surfaces which would actually be rubbed smooth if the guitars were played. Slightly worried to see little white spots under the neck lacquer. Wenge can be an oily/resinous wood and is not easy to finish. It could be that the finish is starting to de-bond from the wood. If so, I imagine there's years of playing before it becomes significant. Who knows - maybe it will also add "character".

I noticed you take the d'Addario strings out of a bulk pack. How long does it take you to go through the 25 sets? And do you notice any sound difference between the first few sets and the last few sets? The reason why I ask is that the strings in the bulk pack are not sealed in a plastic bag like the single sets.

I prefer the feel of a 25.5 scale. The biggest reason I don't have a 7 string is because now they are all 26.5+ or multi-scale for some reason

There's no real defined scale length when it comes to baritone guitars, for example prs considers 25.5 as being baritone, most yamaha guitars, are 26.25" (so shorter than the 26.5) on a side note the baritone scale with yamaha is lovely for a B tuning it feels in between a fender and gibson
