We all have a thread that drew us to quilting. We sat down with Susan, a quilter and maker from Northeast Kansas originally, to hear about her quilting journey: how she got started, what she likes to make and give, and why quilting has remained such a big part of her life.
Every quilt has a story, and so does every quilter. We’re in love with them all. Does Susan's story resonate with you? Share with us in the comments below.
We’re almost a million quilters strong in this community. And we’re stronger still when we share with each other.
Missouri Star Quilt Co. provides totally FREE quick and easy quilting, sewing, and craft tutorials every single week because we love to help you create! I love, love, love watching this new series, it's so touching. At some answers I see myself reflected. I'm grown up in West-Berlin, Spandau part of the British sector. I saw the first quilt when I was about 9-10 years old, around 1962-63. In the west of Berlin there is the "America House" and there was an exhibition about traditional things from the US. I still remember the quilts that hung there and I was totally fascinated. I later learned that there was, for example, a Baltimore Album quilt, too. I started sewing when I was 3 years old and, without realizing it, had done some small patchwork work long before I got involved with patchwork and quilting in 1995. Today I am a course leader for the German Patchwork Guild and teach others this beautiful craft.

When I would see the KZfaq thumbnails for this "Why I Quilt" series up on the TV as I walked through the room, I would kind of poke fun at the whole thing to my wife ...... "You know, that just might be a worthwhile question for you to ask yourself?" I just watched this one, and it's really very interesting! What can i say? People's reasons and histories of doing what they do are just plain interesting!

Susan’ introduction to quilting is much like mine. The ladies of the church hand quilting on a large wooden frame with wooden chairs at the corners!! I had forgotten that until she mentioned it. Being in 4-H and not only sewing clothes but a bedspread which was a cheater’s cloth but it was my first experience with quilting. Susan’s story is so relatable and she is so personable. She would be an excellent instructor at a retreat!!! Love these interviews!! Love this series!!

My experience is SO similar! My earliest memories of quilting was of the retractable frame in my grandmother's living room where ladies would gather to quilt. It took up most of the room, so it was on pulleys and was kept raised then lowered weekly for the group to gather. I really long for an experience like that! My great grandmother lived with my grandparents and she quilted until she passed away in her 90s. Great memories! (And why I quilt! 🤩)

I enjoy these personal glimpses into the people who make up your quilt family. If you could make them longer by stringing a few interviews together. Maybe employees who all work in one workplace, or two at a time, or maybe introduce the clip during one of your triple plays, etc. I find short videos are annoying because I must sit and watch so that I can prevent youtube from loading another video it chooses. I tend to watch youtube videos when I knit or sew, so I like it when they last at least 30 minutes so I can get something done. I enjoy all your videos, thank you

I loved your interview. It was great hearing how you got started quilting. I thoroughly enjoyed the retreats I have attended at MSQC with my sisters. You and Cindy were a great team! I miss the two of you. Quilting is very therapeutic for me, and I enjoy giving quilts to others. I would love to visit Hamilton again. Keep doing what you do. We quilters appreciate it. Sending you love & hugs, from the California sisters. ❤
