I’ve worked in the corporate world for 41 years, back when I started in the 80’s, corporate jobs were what people wanted, they were highly desired, but times have changed. Corporations don’t value their employees the way they used to, lay offs, office politics, severe micro-management, toxic supervisors and management have driven too many people away. I currently work remote but I’m so micromanaged I’m literally changed to my desk on a headset, even restroom breaks are timed. I’m too old for this, I’m over it, and I’m retiring next year! 🎉 Glad people aren’t putting up with it anymore! 😊Good video!

I too remember the good days of the 80s. I also work from home, since Covid, but they are having us return to the office for 2/week. I’m not micromanaged, thank GOD. best wishes to you.

YES! I did this in 2017. No back-up job, no net. Never looked back. Some of our biggest lies are "secure" job, with "benefits". And I raised two kids, solo, who are now productive, healthy adults. There are so many lies companies try to feed us. Kudos to you! Thanks for sharing your experiences and hopefully inspiring others. We truly are responsible for creating our own reality.

Thats wonderful to hear. Your a rock star mom! My mom also raised me and my sister, working, while going back to school online, until she was able to break out of her corporate job and start her own client business. Life is about finding your path. I wish the best for you and your family 😊

100% Agreed. Post COVID I find myself wondering why I valued things the way I do. Biggest lesson learned is don’t undervalue yourself HOWEVER you must also be realistic with your career expectations and remember to save your money while you can set up your future self and work towards that dream goal.

This is so great!! Im really excited for you! I feel the exact way about corporate and the 9-5 situation. Its so hard to connect to people at work. I cant do the fake surface level act. The annoying thing is that I knew what i was getting into since I was little and was afraid to enter the workforce. I knew society was messed up, Yet I still went in because I thought I had no choice. I still dont really know what to do but I am taking a leave of absence from work due to health and moving back in with my parents who are in texas (im in chicago too btw). But theyre expecting me to do my masters in comp sci or something but I dont reallly like school d: All I really want to do is draw, i wish I could make a career in art but i have no education related to it. (my bachelors is in business) Honestly I should just become a forest ranger, or like work on a farm. I just like the simple life. XD

Thanks for sharing your story! I feel you. Its a career path that is shoved down our throats so young and it's hard to think of another way once you've been digging those grooves. I'm glad you are taking that time for yourself. There isn't anything wrong with taking a step back. Don't follow what your parents want if it's not gonna make you happy. If art is your passion dive into that. Frankly you don't even need a degree to be an artist you just gotta keep at it. For doing graphic design or UI/UX stuff you could take some google classes along with a little portfolio and it can take you further than you think. Part-time could also be an option while you move to something else. But also the ranger/farm life sounds awesome! Either way I wish the best on you path way to happiness!

@@chismprism thanks so much for your detailed response! I’ll definitely look into ui/ux. I kept looking at boot camps for those but I think I should actually try things out first and see if I like it. I was also looking at ways to get into concept art for industry’s or eventually freelancing, and practice skills to make a portfolio, while I work. But we’ll see! I’m definitely going to try going after my interests! 💖

As someone who works in corporate for the better part of a decade, I say quitting a job without a solid plan is dangerous especially in these perilous. Make no mistake, corporate careers are not the be all end all, and nobody should be blindly loyal to an employer, as the needs of the employer & employee are diametrically opposed. But just switching to gig work in this economic environment is a massive risk. Companies by default are penny pinchers and risk averse. Costs of living are spiking all over the place. I've adopted a middle road of working a decently paying job while saving and investing toward financial freedom. Minimalism and frugality have become cornerstones of my life. The rat race isn't the answer either.
@chismprism
@chismprism 25 күн бұрын
I appreciate your perspective here also. Thanks for sharing. You're right it's risky. The times we live in aren't ideal. Yet the alternative is settle, wait and live fearfully of change. I didn't say in the video but my company was laying off hundreds of people in the last 2 years. So its not always that "safe". For those with a low risk tolerance what I did may not be the pathway for them. Everyone's journey to their dream life is different. You're proof of another way. I'm only trying to tell my experience.

I hear you but times have also changed my friend. The cost of housing isn't what it use to be anyway and the amount of debts my generation carries can be crippling. She mentioned the word "feeling" at least 30 times in this video. Unfortunately, men don't have the luxury of getting our "feelings" right when it comes to making a living. Having said that...welcome to Corporate America.

I don't believe this is a gendered thing at all. I totally get anyone having responsibilities (family/kids, bills, etc) where it's not as easy to break from corporate but thats partly why I made this video. My mom is a great example of a single woman going back to online college, rising two kids, working corporate for 25 years but then decided to build her own business. Most people feel stuck in this rat race. Everyone's journey is different but there is a way to a more fulfilling life. I wish you the best in your path!
