Haha can certainly be a factor for some exercises (like flat db bench and db rows) but most movements are good :) That said the weight situation is a real issue for many, but for reasons that many lifters don't think about. See 4:15

I completely agree with this I was just having a conversation about it in regards to barbell vs. Dumbbells I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that people want to do what everyone else says and don't want to be left outbut in reality I feel like you get way better gains from the barbell

100% agree. I'll use dumbells if I go to the gyn on occasion, but at home I don't have room for them. It's all barbell work at home..which is 95% of my training these day's.

What I can't stand is how bulky a dumbbell gets over 30kg, may be if they were made of lead instead of iron...
@gravemind6536
@gravemind6536 3 жыл бұрын
@@demoncore5342 They do start to become cumbersome when they are heavy it more becomes an exercise or wiggling around to get them in poisition. Lots of people get snapped up by heavy dumbells due to balance issues or it simply wobbling in their hands and tilting side to side. I like dumbell shoulder presses and use dumbells for farmers walks which imo is a criminally under appreciated exercise and I use them for curls and Dumbell rows thats it.

First day impressions:It arrived in a waist high box. kzfaq.infoUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 Each dumbbell was in its own foam box within the shipping box. Everything was secure and in good shape. No weird smells. The weight changing mechanism is really smooth and straight forward. Changing weight is really fast and easy. Though the handle is plastic, I don't think it will be breaking anytime soon. So far pretty impressed after my first session with them. I was afraid they were going to be too wide at first, but I didn't have any issues with them while doing upright rows.

@NaturalHypertrophy
@NaturalHypertrophy 4 жыл бұрын
@@omp365 That's an excellent idea. I personally started doing that for biceps hypertrophy. The one thing I would say is pay close attention to your form on EZ bar curls and do them as strict as possible. Cheat EZ bar curls are fairly useless IMO since the double hand position on the barbell makes it easy to turn the lift into a supinated clean. I like to stay in the 3 to 7 reps for heavy work and do my volume with 8 to 12 reps.
@carlosmorris4510
@carlosmorris4510 4 жыл бұрын
This could be because there's more flexibility with dumbbells; when using them the biceps are forced to work separately - there's no assistance from the other bicep as when you're performing barbell curls, for example... Strict, unassisted isolation of each bicep. Using a regular split, I've found in the past that I like to work them out this way; performing dumbbell curls first before performing (bicep assisted) barbell curls. A highly concentrated pump this way too. Once they've been targeted this way, anything can be used as a finisher - icing on the cake.

Dumbbells can be occasionally helpful. Take a dumbbell bench press for example, it allows you to go beyond the natural range of motion of a bench press - not only can you lower the weights further, but you can also bring your hands together at the top which increases the range of shoulder flexion
@AlexLeonidas
@AlexLeonidas 4 жыл бұрын
For sure they can be helpful, I wish I had a 120-150 set. That said I disagree that you get more range of motion, when you're lifting very heavy dumbbells they get bulkier which takes away from that effect.

The grip on the dumbbell can be unforgiving. I remember Brian Alsruhe saying that he prefers farmers walk handles over dumbbells as they are easier to grip. Personally I’ve had rough times gripping the dumbbell when benching and rowing after exhausting my grip on the compounds. Straps are the way to go for sure.

In my opinion dumbells are great for getting a good stretch. Id say for example a DB bench press is better for hypertrophy than a normal one. And for example rear delts, you can get s crazy pump too with light dumbells. I think everything has its place.

Great points. The "exercise variation" aspect and its associated contribution to providing a novel training stimulus has never been unique and inherent to dumbbells. However, as you covered in other videos, we should note that the loading capacity of dumbbells is not comparable to barbell's and for long term strength/hypertrophy outcomes, we _have_ to include barbells (or some other form of more highly loadable apparatus). The same cannot be said for dumbbells, however.

Pretty much agree, it's for variation and keeping things fresh and new stimuli to adapt to. I have Ironmaster dumbbells in my homegym with 2" handle and 120lb expansion, there is another that can take them to 165. Don't really need that as I only use them for my accessory work outside of pullups (ohp, high pulls, alternating calf raises, farmers). Very much enjoy them and the grip strength I'm developing but probably would have gone with an olympic db handle if I had to do it over for cost benefit reasons.
@AlexLeonidas

You know it brother, and lucky you! Wish I had those Ironmaster dumbbells, looks like the best setup for home gym owners. Olympic db is good but the plates add bulk, so some movements may not feel the same.

I love dumbbells for the stabilizing factor. My barbell bench press is slightly stronger than my dumbbell press as I feel better balance with the bar. Barbell benching 275 is no problem, for 6-8. But damn when I pick up the 135's or 140's, balancing those betches can be tough and my stabilizers works work much harder. One thing though, I felt that as my dumbbell press got stronger, it carried over to my barbell press improving. It never occured the other way around. One thing which I did start doing is incline pressing with cables. I train mostly for hypertrophy so the tension is a must for me. It's so difficult especially as you get heavier.

@comingverysoon 9 ай бұрын
This is very late, but for many of us, DBs just fit our bodies better because they allow us to change to a more natural grip angle for pressing movements. I got sick and tired of shoulder and elbow pain during BB BPs. Switching to DBs completely solved the problem. I press 100lb DBs now and have no intention of going heavier. The stretch is unreal! I progress by slowing the eccentric and shortening rest periods.

When are you going to do barbell flat bench again?(intensity day) really wanna know how high in the 400s you are as a natty since your going best mode now and since you haven't rotated onto flat bench in ages bro.

Hey Alex, could you ever touch on varicocele when lifting heavy? I think i caused mine through the valsalva maneuver, not 100% sure though.

@James O'Connor oh i have been in the hospital already, now getting regular blood checkups to check if my hormones and blood levels are aight. But everyone i heard of with this problem who asked their doctor, the dr in question had absolutely 0 knowledge about strength training or the valsalva maneuver. That's why i asked Alex, i trust him, watched him for years. Of course i don't take his word off a golden spoon or anything but maybe he could have some really useful tips etc

I prefer loadable dumbbells over the regular dumbbells because you can make more precise changes to the weight. At my gym, the heavier dumbbells jump from 22 to 26 to 30 to 40 kilograms. That's too much of a jump to make progression easier.

M W if your gym has space try using a trap bar for farmers walk. You’ll be able to use more weight. The most I could do with dB farmers was 120lbs/55kg with the trap bar I’m up to 308lbs/140kg.

@@OkTr3y I agree I do it with dumbells because its more difficult and tests grip strength more. Farmers walk has done so much for my grip strength it used to be pathetic but its much better now.

Alex randon question...if I recall correctly you don't train much legs bc genetics maybe? However, aren't there studies that show hitting big muscle groups (legs) helps release more testosterone and thus helping other body parts get bigger/stronger? So shouldnt you train Legs more?
@AlexLeonidas
@AlexLeonidas 4 жыл бұрын
I'm hitting them hard now, but yeah I don't want my legs to get huge. I'll dial back the training if that happens. On your second point, I believe the benefits to be way overhyped. Little spikes won't make a huge difference. Could it help? Possibly, but then you gotta factor in the increased recovery demand and the % gained.
