Years ago 1st day of deer season I was sitting down wind of a heavily used trail. I was carrying a Martin Mamba recurve. The next day I hunted with a Howard Hill "Big Five" longbow and as I stepped into the woods with that longbow I suddenly felt "as one" with the forest. No clue why, but from that day on I carried a longbow and smiled.

I bought my first recurve a little over a year ago and learned on it. The people at the shop convinced me to go with a recurve even though I wanted a longbow. I ended up buying an American longbow a few months later anyways. Something was drawing me to it. Today the longbow is what I shoot with 90% of the time. It just feels better in every way. People at the range told me that it was a bad idea because of the hand shock, but I don't even feel it anymore. And the fact that it's so much lighter is a huge factor when you're hunting. There's a weird bias against longbows in my local archery community that I don't really understand.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow Жыл бұрын
yep its like that in pretty much all areas. local archery shops always think they know whats best for you because they spend all day telling people what works best. its a common cycle. but glad you stepped outside of the box and tried something different. im right there with you. got my first longbow many years ago and have not hunted with a recurve since and probalby never will again.

Thank you Jason, I appreciate so much that you put out these kinds of videos. Myself when I was a kid I used to shoot a longbow with plastic vanes and remember plenty of times how bad that hurt when the vaneslipped across my knuckles. For me to use a long bow I’d have to get over that fear, for now I prefer a shelf to keep my hand away from that thing!

The compound grip is similar to the recurve ;) Remember which came first. Both are effectively pistol grips. I've shot for sixty years, recurves and longbows, no compounds for me ;) And it's about what you enjoy using, more than anything else. Whatever floats your boat, if it feels good to you, if you enjoy using it, there's the why. :)

Nice video explaining YOUR preference between the two main styles or shapes of traditional bows 🏹🏹. After listening I may be inclined to go towards a takedown longbow. Best of both worlds for me as a beginner. A grip style that is more familiar and comfortable to me but with the durability and forgiveness of a longbow, plus not as much string snagging branches etc… I have been looking at the Galaxy Ember 60” takedown longbow on Lancaster for $199. It’s pretty much their version of the Black Hunter. I saw a couple more reasonable priced options on Amazon that I may think about as well. Plus with a takedown I can buy limbs and maybe a different string for a recurve if I wanted to or vice versa. Thanks again for sharing

I have both, an old Actionbow 8200 by Actionrod 60 inch duel sided all fiberglass flat limb longbow made from 1961 to 1979. Bow has minor notch handle with flat front to handle, I use more of a straight gripping style. With the flat limb longbow it is a 36 pound bow that I pull 34/35 pounds due to bow having a 4.5 to 5.5 inch brace height, once of the lowest in a mass produced bow that had weights over 30--35 pounds (with a 39 pound and 42 pound) until the super recurve bows came out. I then have a better Chinese made recurve bow off Amazon using a better fast flight Flemish twist string with Bear hair rest. The recurve is an OEELINE Airobow, the 54 inches one piece model that is basically a Super Grizzly but all proportions down to a 54 inch bow except the brace height of 6.5 to 7.5 inches. I pull that 54 inch recurve that is 45 pounds to 35/36 pounds due in part to a higher brace height of 6.5 inches I set bow to. I still try to as much as I can use a flat handle longbow/Asiatic bow type grip for the recurve as this feels best for me. The reason I have both styles is I wanted to try a longbow when I got back into archery in 2021, having only ever used except one time recurve bows or at one point a beginner compound from Genesis but the older 15--35 pound bow only made until sometime in 2000's. I just wish my flat limb longbow was a laminate bow because I find even in recurve that an all fiberglass bow as the speed of arrow release is more tied to poundage then with laminate bows but even more so due to this bow being a longbow design. I do like how little recoil the flat limb longbow I have has probably due to the bow being all fiberglass as the big reason as the flexible material can take up the shock. I know one bow I have used in the past have given me some hand shock, an old 35 pound Shakespeare/Root Targetmaster, probably because that bow needs one of two types of almost no grip styles of holding the bow to work best.

I agree with you on shoot what is the best fit for you. I love shooting longbows but got caught up in shooting for score at 3D tournaments and went to recurves. 2 months ago I traded my 64 inch Black Widow PMA to a friend for his 64 inch 3rivers Tomahawk. It draws 45 lbs at my draw length. I shoot longbows better because I enjoy shooting them more if that makes any sense. I enjoy the feel of the longbow at the shot. I don't have to worry about twisting a limb and you are right about recurves collecting every limb, twig or vine between the string and the limbs. Also I shoot higher scores on the 3D ranges than a lot of recurve shooters.

If anyone is looking for a lightweight recurve, the Bear archery bows they make tend to be some of the lighter/lightest recurve bows on the market with the one piece bows they make. I have not really found any of the laminate recurve bows to be lighter except some of the all fiberglass one piece bows, mainly Ben Person or Bear being the lightest for hunting weights. I bet some like the Martin or other even higher end recurve hunting designed bows are lighter bows for a recurve then what Bear makes, but I have not used those bows.

Not all recurves have a high-wristed grip. There are still many bowyers making 50's style recurves. They will likely have more of a dished area under the shelf than an ASL, but still require a low-wristed full grip to shoot. I am sure you already know this fact, but wanted to point it out because you were talking in absolutes. Also, between myself and my father we have owned several longbows and reflex/deflex bows. I love the look, but have yet to find one with with as smooth of a draw or as quiet as our Kohanna Kurves. I think we have about 6 of these between us also. However, you do have me wanting to try out a Northern Mist for myself. I might have to see if they will be at Cloverdale or if I can find a used one at a reasonable price.

So for pure looks I like the way a recurve looks better. Now I like the absolute simplicity of a long bow! Funny as much as I like both I’m actually wanting a Hoyt Satori for some reason. I guess I’m thinking one setup with multiple limbs could be more versatile? Lighter limbs in off season to keep shooting and as season comes closer quick switch and heavier limbs. The look is a little different but does look kinda mean. Still luv the look of a Black Widow KBx!!!

I shoot two types of bows. Historical longbows i make myself, with no shelf whatsoever, shooting off of the hand, and historical Turkish style bows with a thumb draw. Mostly because I'm a giant history nerd. The best bow for you, is the one you actually get out to the range with. I don't enjoy shooting modern bows nearly as much as historical bows. I just wouldn't practice as much with even the modern style longbows with a shelf, not because they're bad, but instead because they just don't have the same intrinsic appeal for me.

The length of a longbow is a plus. Recurves tend to be shorter and fussier. I like a longer recurve. Problem is a longer recurve tends to be lighter in pull weight, usually. I'm 71 years old and shoot a 65 pound longbow just fine. The longbow is just more forgiving.

Not a directly related question/thought, but......... Do you think that most dear shot at in the under 20 yard range (maybe even more so with a recurve) respond to the sound of the bow by dropping in spring mode to take flight before the arrow gets there? The point is that if so, then one's aim should be lower than on a static target. Watching videos of actual hunts I have observed two things. 1. Most misses are high 2. That a significant amount of dear did drop to spring load their flight My hunting experience is with guns, not yet tradbow. Shotgun shooting for deer at 30 yards typically has ballistic speeds around 1,200 fps, give or take. Which is far faster than any arrow. The deer have zero time to respond, but at a arrow speed of 170 fps... it seems it is a significant factor. Thoughts?
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 2 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct. But it's not just traditional bows. Until arrows reach 5 or 600 fps deer are fast wnough to jump the string on any bow today. Probably less likely with a traditional bow do to most trad guys shooting heavy arrows and the bows are so quiet. But nonetheless, all deer can jump the string as we call it and duck the arrow. It is a good idea to aim for the lower 1/3rd of a deer so that if he does drop you still get him and if he doesn't drop you still get him.

I would love to try a short “ long “ bow. The one thing I don’t like is the length. But I would agree a recurve demands mostly perfect form. But like you say it’s preference. I love my 48” bow for blinds and tree stands. I love my 58” bows for ground stalking. I am like you though vertically challenged so choices sometimes are limited. I buy all my bows off of eBay and I have gotten very lucky getting reasonably priced good bows. I agree you can control hand shock by brace height and arrow weight. I have had hand shock with recurved as well so I don’t believe someone when they say hand shock with a long bow only.
@TightwadTodd
@TightwadTodd 2 жыл бұрын
There really, is no such thing as a Short Longbow. Its a contradiction and a term made up by people to designate bows for classes in competition. The length, is what makes them Smooth to draw and forgiving. The shorter you go, the more you have to manipulate the limbs to accommodate the same draw or, you encounter stacking and finger pinch. When that is necessary, they are no longer, an ASL or Longbow, but a Hybrid, regardless of what people want to call it.

You are not alone, I have gotten hand shock from a Shakespeare/Root 35 pound Targetmaster due in part the bow probably needs to be used the way you see modern ILF target bows being used by most people with either the one/two finger grip or even using the finger brace with almost no contact.

Great explanations ! I'm still in the studying phase and money is tight . I have pretty much settled on the Sage as my first bow. I will mostly be shooting targets but will probably hunt with it when my skill level gets good enough. I'm an old bush Alaskan close range rifle hunter. So I know how accurate i Need to be to cleanly take game. One question I have tho. Everyone says start with a light poundage bow. How light should I need to go ? I'm a 220 lb 5'9" retired timber Faller, framer, Laborer. 63 y.o. stronger than average but no powerlifter. Currently still logging, milling , building and taking care of my homestead. Off grid in Interior Alaska. My thoughts for hunting is to use 50 to 60 lb. Would 40 lb limbs be light enough for starting out ? Or should I go lighter. Not trying to pin you down, but looking for some real world advice.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow Жыл бұрын
Trad bow weight is measured at 28 inch draw. And goes up or down about 3 pounds per inch of draw either direction. So you will want to find out what your draw length will be. If you buy a 50 pound bow and you draw 29 inches your weight will be 53 pounds. If you draw 27 inches your weight will be 47 pounds. I bet 45 pounds would be a great starting point for you and very easy. Or you could go right to 50 with no problem. Will only take a week or so to develop the muscles needed when you start shooting. After that week the 50 pounds will be a breeze

Then 20 then 25 ect per day for 5 days each week. Pretty soon I should have pretty good control of the bow. I really enjoy your vids. The Reflex/ Deflex as many call the modern laminated Hybrid bows, is actually a contradiction, that i see many, including Bowyers, improperly use for the style. Its actually a Deflex/ reflex. A true R/D is the style common among many Native people, often referred to as a double curve or Gull wing style.
