I discuss why I chose to sell my Husqvarna Norden 901 and replace it with an 890 Rally from KTM. While they share a chassis and engine, the suspension along with other items is totally different. The 3 reasons for the move were suspension performance, aftermarket parts, and wind buffeting. Why did I stick with KTM since my Norden had issues?

The weak link on the Norden is the rear shock. It was way underspeced for that bike. The front suspension is actually quite good. I solved the shock problem by replacing the stock shock with an 890 Adventure R shock. I bought that shock brand new for around $1300 and applied a KTM lowering kit to it. That lowered the rear of the Norden by 1/2 inch. To compensate, I raised the fork tubes 1/2" in the triple clamps. Whalaah!!! Shock problem gone due to upgrade and bike is lowered 1/2" which is good for my 30" inseam.

I'm doing the same swap and springs and revalving the forks. The KTM is an insect and the Norden a thing of beauty so its worth it to me. Love the Norden, except the damn rear spring, oh, and the windscreen would be better without one, but other than that, bingo!

@@BigRockMoto Not lowering it though, as I find it to be the height perfect. And I need the clearance riding on washed-out rocky jeep trails in the Colorado Rockies. I've brought this stock Norden places I would never bring my Africa Twin, with the new suspension it should go places where my buddies 690's go, well 95% or so, with a few drops maybe. But still, no comparison to the AT in the rough tough rocky stuff. Rode the T7 2600 miles around NE USA and SE Canada, it's a price point bike, a cheap little AT IMHO. The engine is brilliant but that's about it. Can't compare to the 890/Norden/AT. I don't think the AT compares well to the Norden, it's too big and topsy turvy.

Wind buffeting is a huge factor. My VStrom buffeted so badly in the middle of a two week trip, I tossed the windscreen in a bin of a parking lot. Pulled off of HWY 1 in CA into Pfeiffer park took it off and put it in the closest trash bin I could find. I never did put another on. Another great vlog, and useful. I was considering this bike, and now I understand it's not for me. I've got at least ten years on you, maybe 15, and my days of bombing around in the dirt are over. I like to putt-putt on dirt roads and good dual track. I don't camp anymore either, at my age everything hurts too badly sleeping on the ground. Not yet ready to leave the ADV life, just not that high level of dirt anymore. Thanks

Injuries take longer to heal too! :) I'm pushing 60 and I'm now satisfied with doing short runs, touring and exploring off-road rather than trying to get through it as quickly as possible. :)

For the record, my 790R's rear shock failed (lost all fluid, became a pogo stick) at 1,600 miles. Under KTM's instructions, my town's local KTM dealer rebuilt my motorcycle's shock. 1,000 miles later, it is still good. But I'm always wondering...

@@freebehindbars8654 Truth.... People do not realize how important a good dealership is when owning a bike when things go wrong.... or at least more than one in your State/ area. Part of the reason Harley Davidson is so successful in the USA, the dealerships are everywhere and if one is bad just go to the other .... A lot of the Japanese brands have horrible corporate type Jet Ski / quad setups where the people do not know much about motorcycles......

I used to go to a small local KTM dealership. They where mostly off-road enduro oriented and where the kind of shop that let you watch the mechanic work on your bike, give some diy advise and knew what bike you ride by saying your name on the phone. To bad KTM got bigger and bigger and demanded big stock and demo bike standards.for their dealerships which they could not meet. Now the KTM dealerships are the big anonymous dealerships selling all kinds of big brands and only interested in selling more and more.

Thank you for the vid... You touched on a key factor when making a decision and that is compromise. Something so many people, including myself don't consider enough. Your willingness to put up with the negatives, in terms of dealer attitude and support, for the positives of sheer riding bliss means ultimately you get a lot more from the riding experience. Your decisions are weighted towards the 90% of the time it does right. Rather than the 10% of the time it doesn't. Life lessons in a Motorcycle Vlog :-)

Important advise for 790/890 RALLY Owners. This Pro suspension comes with road settings and I've seen a lot off owners riding it offroad without tuning the clicks correctly for offroad. Also springs are for heavy riders. You can have the best suspension in the world but if you don´t do correct settings yo have nothing. I'm totally in love with mine.

The lack of reliability, wind protection, and overall rider comfort eventually becomes too much for Ian to handle with this rally, Much as it did with his 790R! What follows will be several videos espousing the strengths of the 890 rally, followed by a final disillusionment video warning prospective buyers of its weaknesses! I know this is probably shocking news to you. Ian is about to go through a very authentic reversal of previously held opinions about this motorcycle. He needs your support. I had a 790 advR and my dealer called me to tell me they got an 890 Rally in and gave me first dibs on it. The 890 motor is such a leap of performance over the 790 with its heavier flywheel that resists stalling. The Rally kit is premium and you do notice the big hit performance over the stock suspension. I’ve taken my rally out on mini MX tracks and had a blast riding it like a EXC. I did swap my rally seat for the lower SeatConcepts seat. The orange thread and carbon look really pops on the Rally

I can't see the sense in it. You were let down badly by KTM, so you've bought another KTM? I've got a KTM at the moment, and the dealer and KTM support has been so bad I'll never spend another penny with any business related to KTM. KTM washed their hands of any issues, stating that their dealerships are 'independent' and nothing to do with them. Strange that you got your warranty issue resolved on a big public platform, the rest of us get told to get lost.

The problem is, it's such a great bike to ride. Same with the old 690s and 950/990. Despite all of the 'issues' on the 790/890 platform only the immobiliser issue if it crops up is a show stopper that could leave you stranded. I would agree with not giving KTM any money until they show better customer care, but then you are depriving yourself of one of the best, most fun bikes on the market in its segment.

@@defylifeadventure I've had zero reliability issues, other than when I went to collect my bike from the dealership. Who had broken the headlight plastic and gave me the bike back with the clutch cable far too tight and for a clincher, a completely dead battery. When I complained, I was physically threatened by some employees and had to leave with a dead bike and in fear of a beating. Hardly quality service! KTM washed their hands of it, not their problem, dealers are independent magically and KTM are happy to use them (oh, and this has happened to others at the same dealership, as I found out after the event) So, call me cynical, but KTM can get lost. When my wee 390 adventure needs anything, I'll sell it and never touch KTM again. Great bikes. Worst company I've dealt with in over 40 years owning bikes

I usually don’t buy the same bike or model twice but decided months ago that I would sell my 790 r for an 890 rally because it’s been the best bike I’ve owned so far and the upgrades in the rally would take it to the next level. In my mind, no other mid-weight bike compares and I have considered others. It’s also been rock solid reliable for me and I mostly ride off-road.

Maybe, but a rider can only do what he (or she) can do. As an owner of TE300, EXC530, 690 Enduro R and Yamaha XT660R I very well know what I can do with those bikes. With 690 I can go to places I'd never manage with XT660R, and so it is, it does not make me any better or help to say that I am a lousy rider. My son can ride that heavy XT660R thru the same stone garden or a mud pit I can ride with 690. Same with TE300 vs. EXC 530. And, being a kid of 50's, it just is better to get a good bike than to get hurt with a heavy and soft thumper.

@@trevorwright7780 , what I’m saying it’s rider ability “ Tody Price could outride most anywhere on just about anything “ . Yes for us mortals 😂😂, we do our best and try and get the best tool for the job . I’m saying because you have a 790,890 , CFR1100 , KTM500 Husky 701 doesn’t make you a better rider actually getting out and riding does that and if you have been brought up riding from a young tracker that most certainly helps in most cases . Iv owned quite a lot of new bikes and yes on some great suspension is fantastic and at the end of a long days hard riding you will not feel as beaten up ⬆️ ESPECIALLY when you get older with stuffed knees back etc “ like me 😂😂😂” But we do all know ADV/ dual sport enduro bikes are money 💰 pits on modifying accessories etc .My outlook now buy a bike new or second hand with low kms and keep it for 5-6 years get your money’s worth out of it and the money you put into it . Also you don’t worry as much when you drop it etc . Say I buy a good low km bike for 10 grand with most fruit already put on the bike BUT as we all love putting stuff on our bikes we put say another 2 grand in .12 grand that’s cost you 2 per year over 6 years ( that’s cheap ) when you sell probably lose 1/2 but sell accessories separately to fund another bike. Obviously if the bike craps itself your up for more money 💰, but I’m not talking about service costs and general wear and tear items , tyres , chain and sprockets etc . I guess with age I have become more conservative with age , doesn’t mean I don’t have the money to go and buy the latest and the greatest would rather use that money out riding doing multi day trips away . Hay but this is just my option each to their own .

I get why you switched to the 890, but I sold my 890 for some of the same reasons you sold your Norden. Namely, poor QC and indifference (really, flat-out disregard) from KTM regarding honoring their warranty. My front wheel was out of round when I bought the 890, resulting in wheel hop, and KTM refused to fix it, even after acknowledging the hop. My TFT often fogged horribly (could not even read my speed or use the menus), even after a replacement, and they refused to replace it again. Those were the worst two issues, but there were others. Off pavement, it was the best handling ADV bike I’ve ever ridden. But I will never buy a KTM bike again.

I think it's a big mistake for you as a reviewer to sell the Norden 901, as it's in reviews of possessions that your strong point is. And you should not have sold the Norden for the reasons stated above and that would have been the value of your reviews (including discussing Norden's weaknesses and the dealer's troubleshooting). IMHO, it's much more interesting to watch videos of an interesting model with some problems than boring but reliable models. That's what Novelty Model Reviews is all about - the adventure of ownership.
@tHaH4x0r

You are the first person that I have ever heard say that reliability is somehow a bad trait of a motorcycle... Mind boggling. You probably do no actual adventure riding yourself right? Not a single person I know wants 'adventure of ownership' when out on a trip. Especially not when you are stuck far away from paved roads, and help is hard to come by. Sure if you already have 3 other motorcycles in your garage and only take your motorcycle for a sunday ride out, then reliability is of lower concern, but the purpose of adventure bikes is to be going on adventures further than the local Starbucks. And that is where a proper reviewer like Ian comes in, who can inform me as a potential buyer which bike will get me from A to B, and how it does this, and which bike breaks down after 1000 miles.

I kinda agree with you, Evgeniy. It would have been interesting to get more information about long term ownership of the Norden from Ian. Anyway, I can't argue with selling the bike because of the reasons told in the video, Ian shouldn't ride the bike for years if it's not what he wants imo.

@@tHaH4x0r I didn't say reliability was a bad trait. I was saying that not all good things are immediately reliable otherwise we would all only drive Toyota and Honda products, but for some reason we want to learn about Ferrari, Porsche or KTM and Husqvarna. This is not the review of a traveller who has chosen to own a motorbike and owns it all the time. This is a review by a professional reviewer who shows the pros and cons. If it were an ordinary traveller I would agree with the sale as he can't wait for his bike to be repaired. And here it would just be interesting how the problems are fixed, how the dealer and manufacturer treat the problems detected

I think wind buffeting is being caused by air from the lower fairing and around the headlight area. This air is aimed upwards at the rider's shoulders and mixes with the air coming off the sides of the windscreen, forming a turbulent vortex that shakes the helmet. Narrow adventure bikes seem to have this common problem.

The Norden probably has the best aftermarket support for a new bike ever, because it’s literally an 890 and the new OEM touring screen is shipping already. Justification statements are always a trap. Just say you got hella excited for an 890 Rally because it’s bad ass! :)

At 6 feet, but 32" inseam I have no buffeting issues. But, I don't have a ADV helmet (yet), but Shoei Qwest. Maybe the screen and helmet combo makes a difference. I'll mod my suspension before trading this great buy. I still giggle like you did in the vid...same engine eh. Price difference in Canada between the T7 and 901 makes the Husky choice a no brainer. THE WIND AND NOISE PROBLEM IS SOLVED - I just installed my Parabellum windscreen (size medium 17inch) on my Norden and it is the most AMAZING windscreen. It completely solves the wind problem and now my Norden's wind protection is significantly better than my Africa Twin with a tall screen. The Parabellum screen completely eliminates all wind off the torso, shoulders, and helmet, and there is absolutely NO buffeting AT ALL. I am 6ft tall so I bought the medium 17inch screen so that I could still look over it and get wind into the top vent of my helmet when I need to. The wind noise is SUPER QUIET, it's an extremely significant improvement. If the stock wind noise was 9/10 loud, the Parabellum screen makes it maybe 0.5/10. I have never experienced a windscreen this good on any other bike I've owned or ridden. It almost completely eliminated all noise and the bike is extremely pleasurable to ride now, this has entirely changed how I experience my Norden. I know you don't have the Norden anymore but if you found one with a Parabellum screen on it, you might want it back. I have had the Norden stock screen, the Norden Expedition screen, and the Givi touring screen, and they are all absolute dumpster trash compared to the Parabellum.

Ian, another great and honest comparison. For all the pre-release teaser videos it’s staggering to me that the Norden is flawed as it is especially the wind buffeting issue which is pretty much a universal concern. I love the styling but form has won over function as is so often the case. I have no off-road pretensions or real opportunities so comfort on-road plays a much greater part in my deliberations. An amalgam of both bikes is the holy grail it seems. I’ll be sticking with my ATAS DCT ES for now. Cheers, Ian

the only reason I'd go with the rally edition would be the resale value, due to the limited edition numbers. Otherwise, Aprilia Tuareg and the T7 world rally make for a much more compelling package. In fact, I think I just might get the Tuareg in the near future. Lightweight, cheap, engaging, superb sound, awesome looks. If I would do rally raidz, then I would shift towards the t7 wr as it is a bulletproof chassis and engine, very good suspenssion(on the wr variant) and it can take a beating. In contrast, I wouldn't take a KTM anywhere remote or far from civilisation as I don't plan do die alone near a broken motorcycle, regardless of the performance it has. Used lightly and considering its resale value, yeah, sounds like a plan. Currently there are more ktms than GSs at Starbucks so, it makes sense.

I still love my 901 but yes, the rear shock is soggy, cranking up the preload helped quite a bit... over 1,500 miles and so far so good... wind noise eh.. yeah... over 45mph it's a bit much... I'm short though so I bet an extender would work fine for me. Aftermarket parts will come eventually if they keep making this model... when I ask myself "do I ride KTM 890 aggressive?" I have to say mostly, no... do I get into some situations that I wish I had a better skid plate and beefier shock, yeah, definitely. All in all I'll keep my 901, if the shock blows up, it gets replaced.

I'm a big fan of the channel an like the style of the content. BUT i call bs on this one, was there videos made after the shock problems? Seems like someone got a very good deal on a 890 rally to compensate for the issues on the norden..(and not bad mouth the brand in exchange)

Hello Ian. I do not understand. You sold it due to poor reliability and bought bike from the same manufacturer? I expect it will also have the same problems.

Struggling to understand this purchase, maybe I misunderstood the comparison video with the T7 where the KTM engine was described as a bag of nails on startup. Perhaps a lighter 690 would have made more sense?

I don't love the sound and really wish it had a 270 degree crank, but the motor is a beast! And gets 52 miles to the gallon at 70 mph with luggage and cruise control on.

"Willing to sacrifice reliability for performance."?? I am confused by this statement. My first tick box for off-road, remote area riding is reliability. I want to make it home the same way I made it to my destination - not via a rescue operation. To each his own, but you are the 3rd person I follow on KZfaq trying the KTM 890 in place of what they had. I hope your XP goes better. The other two sold theirs within a few weeks of getting it. I enjoy your content and enthusiasm. I can recall some comment from a recent video of yours describing a storage location on some bike you were reviewing, and you said something along the lines of storing "...the tears of KTM riders..." in there. I laughed out loud when you said that. And here you are. :)

I was so mad that the 890 Rally was limited edition.... the 890 R doesn't even come in that blueish color which I like way better. Never liked bike manufacturers selling something that is so low on stock that unless you are paying cash upfront you have no chance to get one.

I heard all the after market parts for the 890 R will work on the Norden 901, so I'm not really understanding why you made that comment, except for the windscreen I definitely understand you on that note. Great video Ian another reason why I subscribe, and I love both bikes!

WELL! Glad we cleared that up. I see you're wearing the KLIM Induction Pro jacket--I bought the straight Induction (not pro). Part of the reason is that I live a little east of you (in Las Vegas) and we've had an especially hot summer.Second is that it looks better than the pro and costs at tad less to boot. I do like mesh jackets but no one should mistake them an Air Conditioned jacket! When vendors speak of "air-flow" and vents, they don't mention 110 degrees of air flow is still quite hot. The benefit (as opposed to just wearing a t-shirt in that kind of weather) is of course protection, and that the perspiration you bilt up at the last 3 minute red light is marvelously whisked away as you shift from first to second--and that DOES feel like air conditioning! I also see you installed a set of Black Dog X-large foot pegs. I did too--on my R1250 GSA (which I seldom ride on dirt, nor do I wear moto-x boots). I did need more foot room for my riding boots, but those pegs have made a mess of my shins--any way the can cut me, they have! Could be my fault, I wear shorts when I ride--don't judge me--I told you it's HOT in Vegas. Here's the conclusion I've finally come to: my GSA is a Street Bike, not a dirt bike. So I'm ditching the Black Dogs for a new set of RUBBER covered, Lone Rider Moto-Pegs. I'll let you know how that works out. Last item: YOUR boots--who wears street boots on a Dirt Bike?!!!

Don't you get that same upgraded suspension on the Nordon Expedition? From my memory, you had the regular Nordon. The regular Nordon has soft sprung road-oriented suspension.

Hello Ian, I'm very interested in getting an adventure bike and I want to be able to do some light/medium offroad and long-distance riding too... I am undecided between the Africa Twin 2023 AS(since it has a 19" front wheel), the Ducati Desert X, and the Huskqvarna Norden 901 Expedition. I always come and go between these and I believe my mentality is similar to yours (the best for the buck) and I think Husqy is the way to go. But I need your opinion on picking one of them. Which one would you buy if you were me? Thanks and sorry about the long question=) Love the content and wish you good luck.
