Why I Sold The Worlds Greatest Overland Trailer
The famed Conqueror trailer went with us across the US. These are considered by many to be the greatest off road trailers on the planet. I camped, explored and lived inside of it for weeks at a time. It has all the features you could want, and it looks tough as nails. So why did I sell my overland trailer? I do still believe this is one of the worlds greatest pieces of overland equipment, but lets get into why I sold the worlds greatest overland trailer....

I bought my Conqueror in 2017, before there were so many options with off-road trailers. They have been making this trailer now for almost 30 years as the ultimate off-grid base camp. That’s how it was advertised and that’s why I bought it. I appreciate your comments that it doesn’t fit what you do. The ultimate design is that you set base camp and deploy the Rally Tent as a place to eat and store gear out of the elements. Then you can stay for a few days and be “at home.” I know several people who have lived out of their Conquerors for several years and two couples that live in their Conquerors full time. I think it is the toughest rig for its size and capabilities, and many other platforms are based on this build especially the “A-Arm” suspension. Good luck with your new project and I look forward to see how you build your new rig to match your needs!!

Hey Freddie! I recognize the name from the Facebook group. Yes, it’s an awesome camper for sure. It’s perfect for most people who like to set up for days at a time. I already have a little sellers remorse, but new cool stuff will occupy my mind soon. I definitely don’t think the Conquerors are bad at all, just not for me at this point in my life. Enjoy the warm season bud!

Yeah and the conqueror can do just that. Pop the top, and your good to go. But resetting up the table, moving gear around, etc is a bit of a hassle and then it has to be set outside. The next rig I will build specifically for me, and I think that will solve this type of issue.

I have never owned a trailer despite the itch many times. I am glad I saw this video as it really confirms all the concerns I have had about a trailer. It sounds like you are still going to have quite a setup. I have yet to move from a tent but I am starting to think about moving into something new (given lead times probably 1+ years!) and I think the slide in pickup camper might be my choice.

We went from backpacking to car tent camping on occasion to a small square drop, and now moving on to a slightly bigger off-road trailer with some inside space. Rented a sprinter for one trip and absolutely hated being tied down to the campsite after set-up, so could never see going with anything that’s tied to the drive vehicle because we like to move around too much. Our new trailer takes like five minutes to set up or take down because we studiously avoid all the outdoor walls and such. I would also never call a made in China Conqueror the best trailer in the world when there are made in Aussie and US trailers that blow it away now. It’s a good trailer, but anything that requires all that setup is just a pain in the neck as you found out. I just could never go with something like an alu cab on a truck when it traps you at the site after set up. Will be interesting to see how you find it after a while.

The new Conquerors are made in China, but this one was SA built. There are downsides to being tied down to camp but I prefer it for the most part. I like having everything with me at all times. It’s awesome that we have so many options to choose from!

Thanks for the honest review. Everything you mentioned about it being a pain to set up, is what was on my mind. I also think it's too heavy and the payload is too low. Towing with the FJ you must've used sooo much fuel. Thanks for sharing Mick
@IndependenceOverland
@IndependenceOverland 2 жыл бұрын
It actually pulled it surprisingly well, and I only lost about 3mpg. Of course a better tow rig would have been better, but it wasn’t horrible. A lot of people complain about the 490 payload. It seems if you filled it up every storage compartment and the wood rack you could easily be over.

Nice to hear about the direction you are going in. That's what I assume I will do too once the kids get bigger to comfortable take the gx460 and the dog. I have rented a teton x trailer before but getting through trails here in Colorado was a challenge. I am thinking of more bigger truck, tundra, zr2 silverado or rebel with a diesel and a Hiatus Camper since it's hard sided and seems to offer more space than most wedge style campers. ™

Thank you for another great vid! And straight talk! I had no idea the break down and checkout would take that long, but there it is. So, the ultimate,... no single one solution. Tundra for max space, Taco without crew cab for great maneuverability... Maybe TAV truck bed from paired with maybe the AT Atlas or Super Pacific? Have you decided on what you're going to next? (Please accept my apologies if I missed this conclusion in another vid.)
@IndependenceOverland

Hey thanks Derek! Yeah I have decided on what I’m doing, it’ll be a truck type build. I’m slowly unveiling exactly what I’m doing. It’ll be Alucab for sure! I will say though, the Tacoma with or without the crew cab is not he same length since you cant get the single cab anymore. And we have the dog so we need the extra space in the back for her. So I’ll have to deal with a longer wheel base unfortunately.

Tell me about how the FJ pulled with everything loaded? I have a 4runner and have been eyeballing the 490. I am a basecamp hunter, so I'd like your opinion. MPGs don't matter to me, I just need to know how it towed on the highway and the "hills" of Colorado. Wolf Creek, Lizard head, and Red Mountain Passes come to mind.

Hey Victor, the Fj did okay. Going up major inclines I would be slowed down dramatically. Vail pass was 3rd gear and 50mph max. I am heavily modified and heavy, so that didn't help. I am regeared to 4.56 gears which was a huge help. Its slow going, but doable. My Toyota has never been a speed machine so it really didn't bother me too much. Off road wasn't bad at all. In low range it did surprisingly well. I didn't take it over anything crazy but it always held its own off the pavement. For a hunting setup it would be pretty ideal!

Perhaps you've covered this in another video, why the Alu-cab canopy camper? I've decided that's the route I want to go, after a lot of research, I'm debating between the Alu-Cab and the AT Overland Atlas. Each has their pro/con making it a difficult decision.
@IndependenceOverland
@IndependenceOverland Жыл бұрын
Hey Ralph, I don’t think you would regret either purchase. Part of my decision is how great the Alucab tent has been for me. The Alucab is going to be a step up for dust sealing vs the AT. The Alucab has a lot of aftermarket support which is a big deal to me, as well as it’s just designed to be modified. It has T-slot all over it which I truly appreciate. The AT has better insulation, slightly cheaper last time I checked, and US built. They build very nice equipment as well, Alucab has just really grown on me. The awning integration, take integration, and a propane fireplace just check a lot of boxes. I like to build things that are complicated though haha!

Why not just have a smaller more mobile trailer w RTT? I think having a truck w RTT and tons of camo gear will weigh u down in the trails. My build is a Tacoma on 35s. And a small trailer containing camp gear/RTT. So I can stay Mobil wo having to pack everything up if I want to hit the trails

We have been looking at the Dweller 13 which has a GVWR of 5732 and that puts us grossly overweight.

I think a truck is going to be to small also. You'd do better with a 4x4 van. As a person that's been in the woods or camping most of my life. I never liked trailers because you are limited. I have a chevy van I'm going to do a 4x4 on next summer. I thought about trucks but they are so limited in my unbuilt van I can go anywhere without having to setup even in the rain. Just adding a little hard learned lesson. Everyone for years said you don't need a van you don't want that gas hog. Well yes yes I do. Of course some things need to be experienced.

The fuel wouldn’t bother me too much, but I don’t want to buy an older vehicle, because I already have an older vehicle. And the new vans are insanely priced and won’t wheel as well as a truck can. They can do a fair bit, but part of selling the camper is because it made me feel limited. A van would make me feel that way too. The only van I would probably consider is the 70 series Landcruiser troop carrier. Someday I would like to restore one. Just waiting on the front coil over models to be old enough to import.
