Thank you! You have confirmed what I already thought, and you’re a tech pro-I’m a learn-as-you-go type. My frustration with Google drive is that when I think I’m making a file available to anyone with whom I share a link, invariably the person can’t open it and I have to “give permission” in a 2nd message. Dropbox ALWAYS works with shareable links and no 2nd step!

1) Dropbox is sometimes faster for saving documents, doesn't fail sync often - this is cos Dropbox did it first so they do it best 2) better offline sync functionality 3) offline sync also means that it's good for backing up files from your computer that you want on hard drive and cloud

hey thanks. i have been using dropbox for only super important personal documents. while i was just browsing around in file explorer dropbox showed up and got me thinkingi i also have it on my phone, laptop and pc. though i use Google docs because i can keep notes and thought maybe dropbox can edit file notes and such. so i started researching dropbox and watched your video and it verified i have been right about Dropbox is a secured file system. i will expand onto it. Thank you much.

Only problem for me is that OneDrive is actually cheaper. Right now it's $5 per user, per month for 1tb each under the business plan. Google and Dropbox cost more for less. I'm currently stuck on Google Drive but am eyeing OneDrive for this very reason.
@BradenChase
@BradenChase 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Siafu! I don't really have the space here to explain it all, but just know that the $5/month price tag is a bit deceptive. I signed up for it once and regretted it because it didn't really come with everything I thought it would, so the "more for less" wasn't really true. Plus, OneDrive can't sync programs/applications across its service. Dropbox can. It might work in your situation, but everything you can do on that $5 plan you can do on Dropbox (and then some). I'm on the 3TB plan for $20/month. Little more than half full.
@siafulinux
@siafulinux 4 жыл бұрын
@@BradenChase Thanks for the explanation. One other little snag I've found with OneDrive is that some files, like what I've got on Google Drive, won't open. I'd have to manually convert each file, it seems. I'll have to play around with Dropbox and see if they can. Just looking for the least expensive file sync with the most options. Thanks again!

For me Dropbox has a different interface on each of my devices so I can never find anything. It puts huge folders on each of my devices. It now put every file i put on my computer into Dropbox. I'm going to take everything off it, stop my subscription and only use it if i want to transfer a file from one device to another. I've had to find a work around to actually download files. Some devices are easier than others.

@@BradenChase I have looked at a few and I am a little dissapointed that Dropbox does not offer any of the smaller package sizes. You have to commit to 1TB as they do not offer anything less. This is way more space than I would ever need so sort of excludes it for me.
@BradenChase
@BradenChase 4 жыл бұрын
@@1414141x If all you want is cloud storage, Dropbox might not be a good choice for you. There are a lot of free options you can use that whave smaller chunks. Only iCloud and Google Drive offer the little chunks of data you're talking about. But even with them, the best value is always the 1TB option. For me, I don't use Dropbox for the space. Having extra room to grow is nice, but I use it for the functionality and dependability. That's worth $10/month to me.

Very interesting. I get OneDrive for free and had to switch over to DropBox for my sanity. The OneDrive Free Up Space function does not work and all of the MS techs are clueless. I traced the issue to BitLocker setting a file attribute to P and that tells OneDrive to keep the file on my SSD drive. MS techs don't understand that I'm not the one setting the file attribute to P and I don't want to kept the files on my SSD drive. Dropbox does not use stupid file attributes to control status so when you tell DropBox to free up space it just works.

The one thing I think Dropbox should improve (Other services like google drive or ms onedrive have the same problem) is that when you set a folder to be accessable offline on Android, you can only access this folder within the Dropbox App and not with file managers or music players. The files are not like on the pc version normaly stored on the local storage but are a part of the cache of the dropbox app.
@BradenChase
@BradenChase 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good point on mobile systems, but I think that is a restriction in iOS and Android, not really a Dropbox issue. On my iPad, I can do that (kind of) via the Files app, but it's still clunky compared to the macOS version.

I like Dropbox but their family plan cost more than individual 2TB plan and still remains at 2TB. It doesn't make sense. Onedrive family on the other hand gives you 6 accounts with 1 TB each, total 6TB + full use of office365 apps, integrate well with Win 10 and is cheaper.

Yeah, if all you want is space, then google's workspace business is unlimited. But It's not the space that matters for people like me, It's the quality of the service and sync. I've never lost a file with Dropbox, but I've lost plenty with the other services.

The same experience with me. I subscribed. Another issue with Google Drive is that it has a mediocre search algorithm. It is the like the search system of Gmail. GDrive and GMail could not easily find files easily compare to EverNote or YahooMail. When you are putting files on GDrive, more so if you have many many files, you are putting them in limbo. They will surely be lost. By the way, that's the reverse of the search engine.

I hate to break this to you, but Microsoft invented cloud based storage. OneDrive used to be called Sharepoint, it was for business as an alternative to local storage servers. Sharepoint started in 2001. Dropbox copied sharepoint and offered it to a wider audience being marketed more toward consumers. Dropbox started in 2008, 7 years after sharepoint. Also onedrive has a right click to share option, you simply right click and choose share. But google drive isn't great, ill give you that.
@BradenChase
@BradenChase 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gaertner! Thanks for commenting! Sorry, if my wording wasn't perfect in the video. If we're doing history, cloud storage has been around as long as the internet because that's the definition of the internet. But comparing 2001 Sharepoint to Dropbox 2008 is like comparing the Razor flip phones to the iPhone. Sure, they have some core functionality that's similar, but they just aren't the same thing. (I was there, I remember.) Before Dropbox, online storage had to be done through a browser, FTP, or a server setup. Back then, Sharepoint wasn't a true sync in the way we think of it today. It was a new(ish) server solution for hosting data within an organization. It was also about as user-friendly as a tooth extraction. Dropbox changed that and built the first non-OS app that defined the "sync" category that every service (from Microsoft to sugarsync to google drive to Apple) have tried (and failed) to copy. From pure technology perspective, Dropbox invented its AlphaSync which is still MILES ahead of OneDrive or Sharepoint, or google or iCloud. NONE of them can perform cross-platform application syncing at any level. Dropbox can without a hiccup. Sharepoint has its merits and a huge chunk of functionality that lies outside of the scope of Dropbox, but for what dropbox does, no one can touch them.
@GCOCommander
@GCOCommander 4 жыл бұрын
@@BradenChase Dropbox does not sync applications. You will have to give an example of what you mean with this claim. Because Dropbox does not sync and modify registry settings, so I'm not sure how it could install an application in a Windows environment.
@EnglishHackers
@EnglishHackers 4 жыл бұрын
Hi @@GCOCommander ! Yes, it does. I sync applications across my machines consistently. The confusion comes from a difference in vocabulary. For the past 30 years, "application" was the Apple-only word and "program" was the everybody-else word. That changed with the popularity of the iPhone/iPad, and "program" has been "overwritten" by "application" (or "app") in many contexts, even though they are basically synonymous. But from a technical standpoint, they are quite different. The Windows install process incorporates its programs into the system. Because of this, very few programs can be put in Dropbox and synced effectively. Practically, only the programs that operate independently of the registry can function this way. In the macOS world, most (but not all) applications are structured as an independent containing "folder" that has ALL of the needed execution code inside of it. They are not "installed" like they are on Windows systems and are fully functioning out of the gate. There is no registry to muck things up. In other words, you're able to sync applications on macOS just as you would any other folder. But since they are applications, they can run straight out of Dropbox. No need to put them into the official "Applications" folder. Applications I've done this with: Any education software from Cengage or National Geographic. Grammarly.app Kindle.app MindNode.app Omnifocus.app OpenOffice.app PixelMator.app Screenflow.app Skype.app Trello.app WhatsApp.app BetterTouchTool.app Amadeus Pro.app Amazon Music.app And much, much more... I don't use Windows much (thankfully), but I have been able to download .exe software to my mac, sync it through my Dropbox, and download it on company PCs without error. I can't do the same thing using OneDrive nor Google Drive. Something always gets messed up in the sync. Examples I've tested on a Windows machine: Any education software from Cengage or National Geographic. When I try to do the same thing with OneDrive, there INVARIABLY errors in the apps that make them non-functioning. The sync technology of OneDrive is simply inferior. But I recognize that this specific situation doesn't matter much for most people. How many people regularly need access to mac applications and PC programs at the same time, really? But the point is that Dropbox can do something that neither OneDrive, Google Drive, SharePoint, Box, SugarSync, nor any other "sync" app can do. And can do it flawlessly.

Even before xDrive there was sharepoint. but that is off the point... Similar to how Apple did NOT invent touchscreen NOR coin the word "smartphone"... I've been wanting to switch to gsuite to use their unlimited storage as well as their sync settings (stuff that dropbox can do), but it just really seems like Google Drive/Backup and Sync is not fully kitted. I'm also considering pCloud since it has the 1-time payment option for lifetime access. 3.5 years paying monthly = lifetime access. Have you had any experience with pCloud vs Dropbox?

@@BradenChase Wow! Thanks for all the info! Super helpful to hear your experiences! I'm on the 14 day trial of Gsuite, and currently trying to sync my whole dropbox folder to Google's "Backup and Sync" because I had a hard time understanding the difference between that and Google File Stream. You're saying that Google File Stream has a folder that syncs on your computer, right? In my short time experimenting with Backup and Sync, it appears to have that as well... unless I'm missing something? Dropbox is amazing but the smallest plan price is too expensive for me $119 per year and all my file sizes are less than 100 Gb. I wish Dropbox add another plan with less storage and price because at mean time I don't need 200 TB. Google Drive just £ 25 for 100 GB per year.

Dropbox is geared a little bit more toward professionals and people who heavily use online storage. Not so much for the casual user. That's why there aren't smaller plans.

Hi Braden! You are right Dropbox is far better! I wish I could afford it but it is too expensive for me. Most of my files are scattered across my dropbox ( Basic 16GB) and Google Drive (200GB). Most of the documents ( Powerpoints, Wordfiles, Excel) are stored in dropbox. Here's what I love about it. 1. Only Dropbox supports LAN Sync.... I don't know how the tech giants can't implement that. It saves a lot of time especially when you use a laptop and a desktop. 2. Block level sync. Only the part I edit is uploaded. In Google Drive and OneDrive., if I edit a 500MB PPT. I have to spend 1GB. A newer file uploaded and the same file is downloaded to my other machine as they don't support LAN Sync. In dropbox just a few MBs.... Dropbox is the best at what they do. I just can't afford to use it at the moment.

@@BradenChase I have that. I've actually learned that if you copy the share link and paste it into where you want the URL link, you can delete the 0 at the end of the link and change it to 1. Save that and then when the person wants the download file, it will automatically download it without going to Dropbox. And if you do that for audio or video files, these will play directly on your site. I hope that helps.

Thank you for sharing! Why do they, as in the different services only start off with only 2gb of free data? That's so little space lol. How much to upgrade for dropbox?
@BradenChase
@BradenChase 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Java Juice! Great question! There are a lot of reasons for this relating to their business model and marketing that would take too long to explain... They just "think different." But you CAN get more free space. First off, they have an onboarding process when you're new and if you follow all the steps I think it gives you another 2 or 3 gb for free. So you're right around 5gb for free within about 20 minutes of signing up, which is what Apple offers on iCloud. After that, you get an extra 500mb for every new customer that you refer to them. For example, I had just over 32gb for free when I finally upgraded to a paid plan. --That's more free space than anyone offers, but you have to "share the love" to get it. :) -- In addition, those free GB stay with you even when you upgrade to or downgrade from a paid plan. So my professional plan is 3TB (I know, it's huge) and, once I started paying, they tripled my "free space" to just over 100 gb. So I actually have 3.11TB in my account, even though the plan is just for 3TB. But if I canceled, I'd still have the 32gb on my account. Does that make sense?

The biggest con of OneDrive is that it's only 1tb per user. Dropbox and Google Drive have 2tb per user. And OneDrive is known to be government snitch. In terms of interface I go with OneDrive but in terms of safety and storage go with Dropbox. The biggest con of Dropbox is that it does not look professional as OneDrive does. With Dropbox you get the feeling that's made just to drag and drop files. OneDrive has this and that and easy to access. But at the end go with OneDrive because it's a very good streamer of movies. I got DVD movies ripped into OneDrive and I can use OneDrive as a streamer and the movies load instantly. The movies quality is 720p I don't see any video downgrade while streaming. Plus OneDrive has Xbox and Windows 10 which is made by the same company. That's a huge plus for me. I don't like Google Drive because they upload so slow the files. I uploaded the other day 600,000 files and it took Google 15 ( I never finished uploading them because I got bored of waiting) hours and OneDrive less than 4 hours.

If I need to delete original files off of my iPad and phone, will that cause them to also be deleted off of Dropbox?
@BradenChase
@BradenChase 4 жыл бұрын
The ios apps don't stay on your device unless you "make them available offline." So there's no need to delete them. Now, if you have a lot of files that are "made available off line" meaning they are downloaded from your Dropbox to your iPad, then you'd uncheck that box and they would be made "online only." So not on your device, but still in your dropbox.

Now in the middle of contemplating the switch - the only feature I would like in Dropbox is to share a folder thats not in my Dropbox folder - can this be done? On Google Drive you can select the folder from the app, no matter where it is located, and add it as part of the folders to be synced. This means I don't have to have everything in the dropbox folder...

I've been paying for DB for about 8 years or so, even when my storage needs have at times dropped below 200 gb. Why? Because I've never lost a single file. However, I can't say that I trust them as a company - the data breach, PRISM, Condi Rice, metadata stored unencrypted - but anything I consider private enough I upload already encrypted with my own keys anyway. That said, I must say I am starting to feel the thousand papercuts effect of all these subscription services. Google Drive is an unreliable mess, but Photos has no competition whatsoever. In an age where our phones can shoot 4k at 60 fps and our TVs are up to 8k, it's a massive difference playing back videos from Photos on your Chromecast vs trying to stream from the unorganized upload dumpster in a Dropbox folder. It took literally years to get DB to give OCR and content search to non-Business tiers. With Paper and this Showcase nonsense, it is certainly starting to feel like their R&D is spent entirely on enterprise in some sort of day-late-dollar-short effort to take on Slack, Teams, etc. When O365 and GSuite offer Exchange and other tools on top of storage, the temptation to give up on paying multiple companies for overlapping services gets strong. The only thing Dropbox could do to cement my ongoing loyalty is zero-knowledge hosting à la Tresorit, but with NSA's puppet on the board that'll never happen.
@BradenChase
@BradenChase 4 жыл бұрын
You make a good point. I don't trust any company that much, not because they are evil, but just because of reality. There are so many ways that things can go wrong that it's always better to take your own life in your own hands. :) One reason that I like Dropbox is how easy it is to keep everything in the cloud for sharing BUT also have "hard copies" of everything locally. So even if Dropbox evaporates from one day to another, I still have my stuff. You don't get that safety net with Google.

Yes! Dropbox works like iCloud (only way better). With the desktop app installed, you have a local copy of any file in your Dropbox folder at all times. You get full functionality of the Finder and it automatically backs up all files for 30 days, so you can get previous versions whenever you want. This is also true for deleted files. You have up to 30 days to restore any deleted file you want.

Dropbox used to be good, but now it's bloatware after all these updates. Takes up 30% of CPU doing absolutely nothing, crashes when moving/deleting many files, propagates notifications for shared folder edits without any way to globally disable them, spontaneously creates conflicted copies (for files with only 1 user accessing them...), and creates bloated internal index files that it never deletes (to the tune of 50 GB).

I am emailing support almost daily.
@BradenChase
@BradenChase 4 жыл бұрын
You know, I haven't compared that directly, but my intuition says dropbox would be much less since you're only syncing minute changes to each file instead of the entire file every time. Also, Drive has to load the entire web interface every time you do anything and that adds up if you're working with a lot of files. That's on top of the changes you make to the files themselves. Dropbox only syncs exactly what's changed, so there should be a significant reduction in data use. Just a warning though that the INITIAL setup and sync could be a lot for a pre-paid set up. The initial set up often uses quite a bit as ALL of your files need to be downloaded from Drive (lots of bytes) then uploaded to Dropbox (exactly double the download). Zapier can reduce that a bit with a direct Google-to-Dropbox transfer (if you know how to set it up). But it would still need to be downloaded to your computer, which would use some of your internet. Hope that helps!

Hmmmm.... no cost mentioned about Dropbox! Just think of it: GoogleDrive=$0.00, OneDrive is free with a Microsoft subscription ($8.25/mo. for 5 users) that allows you to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Notes, and more. DropBox subscription? $11.99/mo. (there is a free Basic sub that gives you just 2 GB of space; when 2/3 of the space is occupied, you get hit all the time with warnings that u r running out of space and need to upgrade to the paid sub). For me Dropbox means one and ONLY one thing: it's a ripoff company! Just think! $144/year for just sharing files!
@BradenChase
@BradenChase 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Telis! There's too much in there for me to address in a comment (maybe a future video...) But the short of it is that it doesn't seem like you have a real need for a service as amazing as Dropbox (it's WAAAAAY more than "just sharing files"). But millions of people have found the holes in Google Drive and OneDrive (and others), myself included. And we opt for something better. If you ever find yourself stuck in one of those holes, Dropbox will be there, ready and waiting to save the day. Side note: I have paid accounts for all of the services you mention and Dropbox still out performs them all. It also integrates with all of them, BTW.

@BradenChase
@BradenChase 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivan! I'm guessing the issue is in the file export or the internet connection. Dropbox is the fastest service out there, but if you're moving around files with a lot of gigabytes, that's going to take some time on any wireless internet as most Wi-Fi connections max out at about 300mbs. The length of the video matters less than the size of the file. For example, I have a few compressed 10-min videos that are less than 20 megabytes. Those upload very quickly...less than a minute. I also have 7-8 minute videos that are uncompressed and so are closer to 1 gigabyte in size. Those take quite a bit longer. Does that make sense?

Hi Gilbert! I pay for the full account now, but I didn't always. For a long time, I worked with a company and they paid for 1 professional account (1TB) and all the employees had free accounts. Then, we'd just connect on anything important through shared folders. For example, I had about 50GB of audio files to move one day which was larger than my entire free account. So I broke it into chunks of about 5 gb each and put that into the company shared folder. After it was uploaded, someone would move those 5 GB to a main "RAW Audio" folder that was part of the paid plan, but NOT shared with my free personal account. Then the space in my free account was available to upload the next set of 5GB. So there was only 1 paid account that acted like the "home base" for everyone and then we used free accounts and shared folders to connect to the paid account. Worked perfectly for years.

Hi I totally agree that dropbox is more valuable overall with saving and transferring large files, and most of all being saver! Some of the problems you mention you had with google can be easily solved by changing the flow. When you're creating a folder and share that link, and you ad all the documents you want to share in that folder, when you make a change and keep the same name it will update it. it's very easy and everyone can access I gave a link too, as long as the files are not too big. what I don't like that you have to log in to download files from dropbox. The person does not need a google account to download the files a link is enough. for small files documents that allot of ppl need excess too I use Gdrive. I used Gdrive with a big team for a festival and everyone used it with no problem. Dropbox gave us so many issues with being able to see the files. I have to pick one now, but after your video, I think I will use both.
@BradenChase
@BradenChase 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Saraz! I ended up using both as well. Dropbox is my primary and I usually end up putting just about everything in there, even if it's in Google Drive still. There are specific situations where Google wins though, like the one you described above. I can allow downloads without signing in, but that might be a feature of the paid plans. Another is that Google Sheets is a must if you're doing much work with Zapier. Dropbox recently incorporated the GSheets format into their system, but I haven't figured out how to make it sync with Zapier yet. Also, the search function in Google Drive is (predictably) better than the one in Dropbox, though Dropbox is quite good.
