When I started as a freelancer in 2019 I dealt with an unhealthy amount of imposter syndrome. I still do to be honest but it's getting better. This video is my attempt at reviewing a great camera and to also give you permission to go out into the world to sell your service to clients. If you can shoot video or take photos and you have a camera there are people out there who need what you do.
Can the EOS R shoot pro level video in 2023? Yes, it absolutely can.

Thanks! It obviously depends on your desires but I imagine a lot of people want to make compelling work and no amount of specs are going to get you clients in the door or help you craft an emotion and maintain interest and wonder why doing so. I wish it were that easy. 🤪😃

I just did a client photoshoot with the 5D Mk II. I know it can deliver, client loved the results, doesn’t care what I used. I want an R because it doesn’t over complicate filming. Doesn't over heat. Doesn’t second guess or get in the way when trying to help. Doesn’t require me to tell it how to respond to what's happening in frame. Gets out of the way. I had an R6 and it was too smart for its own good. A hot-mess genius of a camera but every shoot was fraught with menu digging, gotchas and fiddling that just made shooting with it unpleasant. It cooked itself and died. When I got it back from Canon I sold it.

2024 and im using the eos R amd this video is great, I think the same, sometimes its about focosing on what can you do and what you have instead of dreaming of what you dont have

Good stuff, Jon! I was super impressed (as you know) in that last video with all of the shots in the woods. You're obviously nailing the exposure, which I think is the secret to making any camera look fantastic! I still have my original EOS R, especially recording to an external monitor to avoid the time limit, and bump up the bit rate. Excellent work!

Thanks my friend, as always. I think once you figure out light and how to shape it, it’s like unlocking another level. Obviously I’m not where near a master but I remember the day I opened a white door to act as a bounce for a photo I thought “where did that knowledge come from.”

The OG eos r is the best mirrorless. Not the r8 r10, R20. It's no longer available for purchase and im 100% glad that i purchase it early after its release. I will never sell it.

Jon, thanks for your video. On KZfaq you find many people who say they know everything but end up confusing. You simply get those who are starting out in photography or video excited and make their dream come true. I have a couple of questions for you, if you can answer them I will appreciate it. What type of lights do you use for both video and photography? What program do you use to edit? In What format you deliver your job? Thank you very much and good luck in your projects

I appreciate you saying that so much! Key light (main light) aperture 120d DaVinci Resolve Drop box (I used to use Google drive) For photography I have yongnuo flash. I use a reflector a ton on set.

I also started with a T6i. Now using an EOS R. There was a comfort level with the T6i that I can’t seem to duplicate with the R. I think it’s because it was so cheap I didn’t worry about breaking it so I used it everywhere.

I feel you! You’ll get used to it if you use it a lot. I work with my cameras often but I still was scared with mine at first. I’m filming a doc right now and I had a grip guy who’s been in the industry for 20 plus years on set one day and watching him throw stuff around kind of changed my perspective. 😂

Thank you for this. I’ve been debating on if the EOS R was the camera body for me until I heard other people talk about the video as I’ll do hybrid work for DJ’s and other Artists but this helped ease my mind on this point.

I was looking at getting a GoPro for my filming but they are too expensive for me and I have seen many reviews that are not happy with them at the price point. So I got one that got good reviews at about half the price. Not got it in the mail yet but we`ll see. It`s a start :) Two for the price of one in your case seems like a really good idea. Maybe that is what I will do for some cooler shots later.

Just have fun with it! Knowing your needs, in my case my client needs, and what you’re trying to accomplish really factor in a lot in the decision making process.

Great video. I have been on Ebay for the last month trying to get an R. But not sure if I want to spend $1k on it when a Canon refurbished R8 is $1100

I’m not sure of all the specs but it looks like the r8 has 10bit color snd is also full frame. That’s cool. Ask yourself what features matter the most to you and go from there. It all depends on what kind of shooting you do ya know. But 10bit color is one thing I was I had with the R.

@@JonJosephKuhn For me the main use is photography. I am not a pro like you, just a serious hobbyist for 20+ years. Everything I do is for fun and my own entertainment, but dammit, it would be nice if someone actually bought one of my photos! When I look at your video I am amazed at how awesome the footage is even by 2024 standards, but mentally I can't get past the sticking point it's a nearly 10 year old sensor from the old Canon 5D4. I know it sounds stupid. I still have my old Canon 5D2 and the M50, and I still love them, but I need an upgrade. My wife wants me to get the 30MB sensor of the R so I can do larger prints, so I am on EBAY looking for a good deal.

Yo! Offer to do a shoot for free. Offer to a business not a friend. Invoice the client for the shoot but discount the invoice to $0 and get permission to use the images for your portfolio. Then keep meeting people, pitching yourself, and show people your portfolio. It’s a grind, and if you quit you lose.

I appreciate you saying that! I use C Log. For most work I should probably just use a normal profile mode because I don't spend a lot of time color grading, but I feel like it's good to have the option to push and pull if I need. The 8 bit profile is the one draw back and the thing I come back to when I consider upgrading. Again, the upgrade hasn't made financial sense yet.
