FATRIDE

Жыл бұрын

After years of MTB/mountain biking racing I made the decision to switch to fat biking.
When I started mountain bike racing in the early 1990’s names like Tomac, Tinker, Ned, Missy, and Juli Furtado were the superstars .MTB was on fire during this time. The Norba series was the big circuit at this time. At this time to read your heart rate it was on a Polar watch. They sold a rubber watch mount you could put on your handlebars.
High end MTB racing level bikes were around $4,000.00 to $4,500.00 and that’s with XTR. Now you are looking at up to $12,000.00…..
Just a few years later the whole thing riding with a Garmin 810 was the big thing. Then shortly after that Stages came out with MTB power meters.. Before you knew it you had thousand dollars wrap up in it… Then the new fascination of reviewing and training to data started…
Rides were getting faster and faster. In 2013 I started a daily coaching program. I did get faster and faster but between being so focused on training I started to lose the enjoyment of riding with friends. On top of that I was constantly dieting to keep my weight down for my racing weight to power ratio.
When I had an accident and had 3 months off the bike I was able to reflect on what mountain biking had become for me.
At this time fat biking hit the scene. I tried it and enjoyed it. Once I figured out you could set up your fat bike for the MTB trails, I was in and once I found out there was suspension forks I was hooked.

Hahahahaha me too! I raced bmx and downhill for a long time. Once I rode a fat bike I was hooked and now have 3 and even bought the wife one and she loves it. Riding mostly all the same trails, jumps, drops and chutes I did on regular mtn bike. I’m never going back to a regular mtn bike ether

What can I add. After years riding mountain bikes since 1985, competing at National level in XC and DH, when I finally through a leg over a Fatbike my world changed. I own a bike shop and for many years the Salsa distributor in the uK tried to get me to stock fatbikes. I just laughed and another year went by. Then I was offered a demo bike to try, "Just see what you think Graham" they said. I rode a rather used Salsa Mukluk home from my shop on tarmac and in just 3 short miles I was hooked. For some reason it just blew my mind, I couldn't put my finger on it but it was just perfect. This was 2012/13. Now, I love the things so much I have my own brand, I make my own Fatbikes and ride nothing else. I do on the odd occasion think, maybe I would e quicker on a skinny bike but a few miles in and its clear its not faster but is limiting. Riding a non-fatbike is a compromise to me. There's always situations where you think, I could of ridden that if I'd had the fatty. Like every thing, there's fat bikes and there's fat bikes, I lot of people/media will ride a fatty that's not the best, very heavy, so give negative feedback. Tha and the fact just looks slow and hard work puts people off but I've long given up worrying about what people think. The proof is in the ride. Anyway, love the video.

Wow what an awesome story! A) Thanks for taking the time to share it. B) It sounds like we are brothers from different mothers. C) How cool that you owned your own bike shop. D) I totally agree that most rent or try a heavy version and get the wrong impression. E) Sure it takes me longer but you are spot on. With the fat I can ride any terrain plus what a great workout. Again thank you! RIDEFAT and have a great week. P.S I always look forward to your videos.

agree, I started mountain riding in the early 90's as well. I hardly touch my fs salsa horsethief. I now have 3 fatbikes: surly, salsa mukluk carbon, and just bought a new Borealis Creston. I ride them all year in North Idaho, and have been really enjoying them in the deserts of southern utah. keep up the content.

Just built a "new" fat bike. Got into fat bikes with an original 2012 Salsa Mukluk 3 for $750. Having been mountain biking since the 1980's the novelty was something to experience, and I took it everywhere, and I kept up. Eventually I got a skinny 29'er wheelset for it and I've been using the Mukluk as a bike packing bike. The frame is perfect, made for hauling, and the mud clearance is a good thing sometimes. I kept the wheels and I just built a titanium fat bike. Excited to start taking out on the trails and riding over everything again. Good luck with the channel!

I love my fat bike. My local trails are plagued with sand and roots (and often, mud.). Throw in snowy winters here, and going fat has really expanded the quantity AND the quality of my riding experience. BUT ...I gotta say ...all your reasons for "switching" are basically because you were taking biking too seriously. You could have simply opted out of racing and 90% of your "reasons" would be gone. That's not the bike. That was you. I am glad you are enjoying biking again. Personally I will hang on to my hard tail mtb and my fattie, and ride whichever looks to be the most fun given the trail/conditions/my mood. Its important to ride what makes you smile - "comparison is the thief of joy" whether it is who can ride the fastest, who can land the most dangerous jump, or who has the most expensive bike. It is supposed to be FUN.

I have a 29"Stumpjumper f/s trail bike, a Raleigh Talus 29" hardtail, and a cheap Gravity fatbike for snow. I have about $7K invested to be able to ride year round with the proper bike for each season and any trail condition. Sinking $2-3K into a fatbike seems silly to me. They are not fun to ride if you go more than 15 mph on trails with turns. The front wheel understeer is unnerving when you are leaning into a turn and waiting for the rear wheel to hook up, and the front wheel is meandering all over the place. I put my $ into my trail bike. It is the best bike 9 month per year. Fatbikes are fun on snow and sand for me. Hey, the best bike is the one you are on. Right??? Glad you found your riding sweet spot on a fatty. Happy trails. Btw I'm an old fart too at 54 years old.

Hello, Thanks for stopping by the FATRIDE channel. I appreciate you taking to time to leave a comment. Your comment may lead to a future video. You have quite the stable of bikes. I still have multiple bikes but what I found was trying to keep them all running at there best took time and money. I can see how a lower-level fat bike would be looked at that way. They are heavy and slow. But that level of fat bike is perfect for the snow or sand. The higher-level fat bikes are lighter and after years of racing MTB I found with a little tuning them into the dirt trails they can rock the dirt trails. I ride with my MTB friends all the time with my fat bike. 54… You are just a puppy 😊 have a great day!

@@fatride My fatbike is Bluto adaptable and has light tubeless ready rims. Those were my main wants in a fatbike. It is a rigid set up but only 36 lbs. That is alloy Enduro weight for modern Geos. II was only $700 delivered to my home. The only things cheap on it are the components, but that doesn't affect the handling so much. It is just not the correct bike for jumps and high speed chunk and corners in imo. I ride too fast to have a fatty as an all-arounder. For speed the ties need to be pumped up and to avoid tire pinches, or you pressure them down to get more traction... and risk the above mentioned. I would be trashing rims. I will admit, when I first bought a fatbike, i wanted to ride it on everything, and I did. The more time on it, the more I discovered its limitations.

@@petedog9581 What size wheels and tires are you using? I hit the big tabletop jump sections with my fat. I just need to hit them faster to get the height and distance. MTB can be a blast and they have become rocket ships. As noted I raced for years. With getting older the fat bike just fits me better at this point. Keep rocking for the 50 and over out there! Thanks again. Have you checked out my new CRIBS video?

@@fatride 26" 100mm rims with 4.25 VEE Bulldozer 72 TPI. Usually a $100 tire, but they are going for $40 right now. It is an all-rounder tire. Not huge lugs on the edges, but a quality tire. I ride them tubeless, but if ride in the high teens PSI for more speed, I get the basketball bounce rebound effect from the tires. It was really noticeable with tubes. I will check out the vid.
