Why I traded the Fujifilm X-T5 for the Fujifilm X-H2

The ultimate justification video for my Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS)! It was only a year ago that I posted a video about why I went with the Fujifilm X-T5 over the Fujifilm X-H2. All of my reasoning was sound and I was looking for a more photography-first camera. And as I used the camera over the course of the next few months, it proved to be all the camera I'd hoped it would be. But trouble lurked in making videos for this channel and as I started to use my Fujifilm X-Pro3 more for street and every day photography, I realized I had a problem with the X-T5. So I traded it for the X-H2. Did I make a mistake? Find out!

Thank you for your comments on the X-H2 being heavy, I just got rid of the BMPCC6kPRo, which I could use as a murder weapon, and I love the color/quality from it, but bringing it anywhere (specially without auto focus and stabilization), so while I LOVE the colors of the XH2, I dont want to carry a brick anymore.

It’s certainly relative, there are much bigger cameras than the X-H2 that are out right now. But in the Fujifilm X world, it’s a big camera. The X-T5 is lightweight and excellent for photography.

I had both. Sold the X-T5 even though I love the analog dials and the tilt screen. I felt the X-H2 had better build quality and the write speeds with the CF Express card can't be understated. Learning to get used to the goofy fully-articulating screen but it's a great camera for pro use and a very good camera for video. I picked up a mint used X-T30 II for $500 to get my tilt screen and analog dial fix. That is used mainly for street and travel.

I traded my X-T5 for the X-H2 simply for ergonomics... I come to realize how fun it is to shoot with the X-H2 when I started using bigger lenses. It is so comfortable compared to the X-T5 even with the grip. I miss the 3 way tilt screen though but the articulatating screen grew on me, something i am willing to give up. No regrets at all.

I’m not an action photographer so I feel my expertise in this is limited, but what I’ve seen for face tracking and object tracking has been dependable, fast. I took a photo of an eagle with the X-T5 that flew over me in Washington and it happened so fast and it was completely in focus, just poor exposure on my part. The X-H2 seems like it’s exactly the same. Unfortunately I can’t directly compare the X-H2S because I have not used that camera. I suspect that the tracking mechanism is identical, same processor and all. But I don’t know for sure. Wish I could be more helpful!

I reluctantly forgot about getting the X-T5 as soon as I saw there was no option to put on a vertical grip. The X-H2 took a bit of getting used to, and the menus are sometimes 😳🤔, it seemed rather weird to have to ‘configure’ the hot shoe before it would work with a flash trigger. Build quality appears so far to be the best Fuji has managed in its apps-c cameras.
@ChrisFreitag

Their menus are terrible across the board. Funny you bring up the hot shoe, I had a different problem with the remote port. I didn’t know where it was! All of my other Fuji cameras had it near the usb port. The X-H2 has a jack over there and the remote cable plugged in but no luck. Had to look it up online.

Very good video, good comparison. One question... how much does a file (a photo) weigh in JPEG using the 40 MP of the XT5? And...how much does an UNCOMPRESSED RAW file weigh in Fuji xh2 or xt5? We await your honest answer
@ChrisFreitag
@ChrisFreitag 2 ай бұрын
a JPG straight off camera varies wildly based on what is in the photo, but ranges from 12MB to 25mb per file. The RAW files are more consistently around 87MB. This is true for both the X-T5 and the X-H2. But some honesty here, I had an M1 iMac when I first got the X-T5 and felt the M1, just the M1 chip not the M1 Pro or M1 Max, choked a little on the RAW files.
@efroy2959
@efroy2959 2 ай бұрын
@@ChrisFreitag Thanks for your quick response. Your information has been very useful to me. And yes, that's the bad thing about raw files, they are very heavy. I know there is the lossless compression option, but in that case both xt5 and xh2 are no longer 40MP cameras, because they will give much lower resolution photos, which practically cannot be cropped comfortably anymore. I think that no one in their right mind takes a wedding of more than a thousand photos with uncompressed raw in this type of cameras with so many megapixels. We continue watching your videos!!

Everyone said they loved retro styles until they realised the ergonomics is suck. I am a Fujifilm shooter but what I can say is people in Fuji community always complain about everything and the typical example is the full articulating screen. For my personal, that was a great improvement when Fuji brought it to XS10 and XT4 but people started to complain about it intensely. And then when Nikon released their Zf with that screen, people loved it. What a strange world that I really don't understand :))
@ChrisFreitag
@ChrisFreitag 3 ай бұрын
From just a pure photography perspective, I much prefer the 3-axis tilting screen to the fully articulating screen. I find it easier to compose shots with the LCD panel close in relation to the lens. But as a hybrid video/photo shooter, the fully articulating screen is a must. You simply have to have it.

I have many different cameras and from Fujifilm I have a Xt3,XT5 and XH2 from Nikon I have a ZF, Z6II and Zfc, I also have cameras from Panasonic, Olympus and Pentax, the different screen types all have their place, if you are a photo centric photographer like my self, the tilt down screen on the XT 5 works works well with an L-bracket and a camera with a screen like the ZF is great for vlogging but works best in landscape orientation, the ergonomics on the ZF, XT5 and XT3 don't suck, I enjoy using them alot, that being said if you're shooting with large glass the XH2 is a better choice and while it is a bigger camera than the XT bodys it is not a heavy camera, it is like the Panasonic S5, if you want to work with a large camera try Pentax K1 MKII and the 24-70 f2.8 that is a heavy camera but a very good one.

My main photographic interest, is taking images (mainly still) of my wife's English Pointers at Dog Shows - hence my X-H2 C7 Custom Setting - Going to the Dogs. This camera is invariably used with an XF50-140mm F/2.8 attached to it. It's the best combination, and the best camera body for this purpose. However this is not my first Fuji love, which remains my X-Pro2 with XF18/F2 & XF35/F1.4. especially for street/travel photography. My Fuji journey over the last 10 or so years has meant that I've sampled most of the company's products, and until the introduction of the X-H1, I'd always been dissatisfied with the form factor of the XT line. I've loved the separate speed/ISO dials, but with longer lenses the cameras never felt right without a substantial battery pack which negated their size/weight advantage over alternative systems. I even tried to compromise with lighter zooms, although I found I needed the F2.8 option. Like you I initially found the X-H1 disappointing and when the X-T3 came out, I found myself hankering after and eventually exchanging the X-H1 for the later X-T4. A big mistake; I'd by then got used to, and was enjoying the better ergonomics of the X-H with the heavier XF/F2.8 zooms! So it was a no brainer that when the X-H2 came out, I didn't consider the X-T5, and I've been more than satisfied with my decision. Subsequently I've now exchanged my X-Pro2 for a Leica Q2, for when I'm travelling light... but that's another story (with possible regret?)
@ChrisFreitag

You are not the first person to mention a pang of regret moving from Fuji to Leica and I am paying attention to these signals. Like many people who use Fujifilm, I longingly look at Leica cameras as a goal, a place to get to. But if I love my cameras, why am I doing that? I completely agree about the body size and the larger lenses. The X-T5 body and the 16-55 2.8 was about the edge of comfort. I didn’t use a grip because I didn’t think I needed it.

Great summary Chris. I'm coming back to photography after 6/7 years out, so am starting again. The X-T5 is what sparked my interest with its design and retro controls (and obviously the sensor), but I just couldn't get on with the feel of it in my hand. I like to dangle a camera off my fingers when I'm walking about (like you demonstrate in your video) and that's not really possible with the X-T5 (I appreciate you can buy an additional grip). Last weekend I trialed a Sony A7iv and loved it. This weekend I have the X-H2 on my desk and love that more. The bodies are pretty much identically sized and weighted, but the Fuji really steals the lead in lighter, more compact, and more reasonably priced 1st party lenses. Add in the way it handles colour and the film simulations and I think I'm there. Yes the AF isn't as sticky as in the Sony but the latest v4 firmware seems to have made a difference, and the main thing is - I have more fun with the Fuji. It's making want to get out there and take photos, and that is ultimately what it's all about!

Interesting video mate! Great to hear all the opinions. Im on an Xh2s and I shoot alot of street and landscape. (No previous x series cameras owned) and using my mates Xt5 I cant stand it. He had to get an added battery grip due to the small grip which adds to the size on Xh2's but is not the full picture. I personally cant stand the retro dials. Using command wheel for iso and shutter speed is much more efficient and im not needing to move my hand from its grip position. It all comes down to what you're used to after time in hand but its great to see what others opinions are especially if they have moved to one system or the other.

Thank you! The retro dials were more than just a stylistic choice, they helped me learn my camera properly. I’ve been practicing for well over 20 years but usually shot in aperture priority or auto. Once I got the X100V a few years ago, I made it a point to learn shutter and iso and having them as dials allowed me to feel it out, see what they did as I composed. But now that I know and I’m comfortable, I’m alright with them hidden under a command dial.

I happen to think the XH2 shouldn't exist. I own 2x XH2S's, I need stacked sensor tech for my line of work, it's a powerhouse of a camera and a true hybrid. But I can really sympathize with the analogue fans that Fuji really skimped out on the XT5. Coming from the XT4, the XT5 wasn't a really huge upgrade, build quality is worse, EVF the same and even nerfed such as no battery grip! The energy spent on the XH2 should have been better spent on really making the XT5 a better tool. Imagine a XT5 with the better EVF, CFeB and a battery grip, with the performance confidence it needs. Literally the 'XH2' and 'XT5+No battery grip' drove working Fuji fans away from the brand... :/ But yeh, cameras generally fall into two categories, fun or work. I don't want to work all day with a camera with a terrible grip. I NEED a nice recessed grip (especially when using heavier longer lenses). Maybe Fuji need to be brave and create someone wholly new. How would a retro styled analogue dial camera be received with a deep recessed grip like the XH2/S has? My experience of 3rd party grips is they never really help that much, because the design of the button locations were factored in for the camera as is, 3rd party grips often push the hand and fingers further away from where they were intended.

It's interesting you say this because what I left on the cutting room floor was a bit about me saying that the X-T5 felt more like the spiritual successor to the X-T3 and the X-H2 felt like the successor to the X-T4. With the X-H2S being more in line with the original idea behind the X-H1. With all that said, it seems like the X-T4 was the anomaly, the product that kind of broke the product line and now we have this X-H2 model that's hovering between the X-T5 and X-H2S.

I agree with you 100% - the XT5 should have been the pro “photography” camera with all the XH2’s upgrades including the deeper buffer and better build quality. I love the XT3 and the best part of owning it is stripping it for compact travel, or slapping the battery grip on for use with the big lenses. I don’t mind the XH line but they definitely left out some critical pieces like clickable dials, battery chargers etc. Fuji made a mistake relegating it’s best selling line to “midrange” status.

Thanks. I wanted the XT5, but I wanted to have a vertical trigger battery grip option, and the XT five was the first Fuji camera in the XT series to not have this. That left me with the X H2. I actually got it brand new on a black Friday deal with no sales tax which alone saved me $200 for $1849 and a free Fuji $400 battery grip. If I had purchased the XT5 I would’ve bought the Fuji hand grip as I have large hands. It would’ve spent more money for a lot less features. Also, for the record, they are not exactly the same inside. The XH2 has a noticeably higher resolution EVF viewfinder, which by the way is wonderful.

@@ChrisFreitag you’re right about the same sensor. I actually also shoot with two XT2s and a Pro2. But the ability to get IBIS and 40 megapixels for landscape shots was very appealing. But the viewfinder to me is just crystal clear and noticeably better than my other cameras. I can use it with the grip for weddings and events, but for traveling and landscape, I use it without the grip. And you’re right, how the included grip is wonderful, even for those with large hands. For years, I’ve actually reviewed my photos using the viewfinder, which gives you a much better view in bright sun, so sometimes I even shoot with the rear LCD screen closed. And I thought I would miss the dials but 98% of the time on all my Fuji cameras I shoot with auto ISO and aperture priority so normally the dials are both locked on “A” anyway.

I had both available for exact the same price (new), I took XT-5 because I liked the smaller body and manual handling wheels on top of it so much. But since now I am in the fuji ecosystem with the lenses, I might in the future get a XH-3 body as a second camera, who knows. Currently I still wouldnt trade my XT5 to XH2, if I had to have just one.

XH2 Pro's for me: * The custom dials * Shutter is very silent Tjik instead of CLICK. * 40MP sensor prints are sweet * Grip (I dont have to add an l plate grip anymore) * IBIS That is why I went with the XH2 instead of the X-T5 though as a a photographer can't get used to that articulating screen and the smallrig l plate doesnt help (blocking the screen😢). Fortunately have the X-T3 still for the screen and the dial experience. Also in general I find the tracking of the Fuji camera's compared to Sony not very usable can't rely on it to photograph my running around daughter for instance. So have bought an a6100 just for that. 😢

Yeah, that's definitely one of Fujifilm's weak spots, the autofocus. I get decent performance on subjects in stills for street or landscapes. It is much improved with face detection and now object detection. But unless you're Johnny-on-the-spot with those settings, you can easily miss those moments. Overall, I'm happy with the X-H2 now, I don't believe I'd like going the other direction from the X-H2 to the X-T5.

Do you have any thoughts about the EVF of the X-H2 vs X-T5? I'm intrigued by the X-H2 EVF and the ability to better see and compose. I have an X-T2 and just purchased the Voigtländer 18mm and 27mm for street/travel. I'm considering an X-H2 or X-H2s or X-T5 (or just keep the X-T2) ((or wait for an XPRO4!)). Probably the X-H2 is a bit large for street/travel, but I like the quality and EVF.
@ChrisFreitag
@ChrisFreitag Ай бұрын
For as much fanfare as the higher resolution EVF on the X-H2 has gotten, I don't even notice. It's not in my comparison because I didn't even think of it because I seriously don't notice anything. I look through, compose the shot, take the shot, I'm done. I use the X-Pro3 which has a much lower-resolution EVF *and* I look through that EVF more often because there's no screen on the back and I don't notice. If this is to replace your X-T2 and you're looking to do street/travel photography, I'd recommend the X-T5 over the X-H2. It's a lighter camera with a more compact build and the tilting screen is much better for photography than the fully-articulating screen of the X-H2. The X-H2 is a tank by comparison. I don't know that the heftier grip would be as necessary with your smaller lenses.

You could have mentioned too that the X-H2 has a much better EVF as well as its capacity to hold long bursts whilst the X-T5 struggles pretty quick. ;) Otherwise I agree with you, the PASM world looks less fun initially but finally gets so much more efficient while shooting as soon as you master the different custom settings.
@ChrisFreitag

You know what's interesting is that I don't notice the EVF difference. I mean, if I'm looking with the intention of looking then I see that it's much better than my X-Pro3 but when I'm composing, I don't really think about it. But you're right! I forgot some key differences that I wish I had jotted down before recording. Like the X-T5 uses 2 SD Cards and the X-H2 uses an SD Card and a CF Express Type B, and the burst mode.

Thank you for your post. I owned the V and the T3. I use my H1, Graphite T1 and Pro1. Now the T5 has reverted back to the T1 size, along comes the H2. This is the second time I've watched your post, and I'm now in a quandary. I was going to buy the T5, now I'm not so sure. For me its good to see someone else was in the place I now find myself in. Combined, my sale of the V and T3 raised £2,700, which sits in my Fuji savings account. I guess I'll have to watch it again. I think It might be the H2 though. The idea of 7 presets is very appealing. Thank you again for an excellent depth post.

@@Deekdashocker I never comment on a camera unless I've used it for a while, that's not trolling, compared to other cameras I've used, it does feel lightweight and lacking build quality. Granted toy was the wrong comparison, it is a fine camera for certain situations,but I felt it a bit fragile especially the hinges on the back screen.

The XT-5 is worth it just for one reason. That lovely tilt screen, it’s so fast, inconspicuous and unobtrusive. Whereas the damned side hinged screen is a burden, so slow, obtrusive and inferior in every way. It sticks out like a sore thumb. … it’s for vloggers, whereas most of us don’t vlog.
