Thank yo SO much for this video! We paused MWC grade 2 because same. WE needed to get a solid foundation on addition facts, so we're almost finished with AFTS, and I WAS going to moved us right back to MWC but I found Apologia math this morning, and I think it looks like a much better fit!

This is great! Thank you! In your opinion after using it a while, do you think the explanations are “deep” enough? And do you think the games are very time consuming? (I really dislike playing games because I’m always in a crunch for one on one work while watching my toddlers). One review I listened to said Apologia didn’t go deep in explanating things compared to MWC, but I know many people love Apologia. My incoming 1st grader really struggles with math and spatial reasoning. She memorized lots of things, but there’s no deep understanding. (I.e. She can count to 100 but can’t tell me what comes before 20!) I’ve been leaning towards MWC because I’ve heard it’s so good at explaining but I am already dreading it because of the reasons you mentioned. (And your review was so helpful!! Thanks to you, I have a plan for moving forward with my mathy soon-to-be 3rd grader doing FTS)

This is so hard!🧐 They are both really great! I would say the explanations are deep enough for my daughter. I will also add that I found it helpful to have the student edition of math with confidence because there really isn't any spiral book work in apologia math. There's games but not actually bookwork. The games at the beginning of the lesson are not time consuming and you can skip them if you want. I don't know which one to tell you to go with because we use them both. 🫣 I ended up with math with confidence because I was helping another mom while she was transitioning back to work and she bought an extra copy so she let us keep it. I really couldn't get down with the teachers guide and it could totally be because I had so many kids and I didn't prep beforehand.🥴 We are continuing with Apologia math. 🥳 Let me know what you decide to go with! I think you might like MWC but it's just so hard to know what will with with your family. 🙃

Which is faster to complete? My daughter is finishing up her kindergarten math with confidence and I bought the first grade level one, but I dread teaching it. It’s teacher intensive not smooth and too many manipulatives in my opinion. They say that addition facts that stick is included in the first grade level. If you had to pick the one that is smoother and faster, which would it be?

Hey! I'm helping my friend teach her kiddos math. They are using MWC grade 2. I'm not a fan of the teachers guide so we use their MWC workbooks for review and have moved them all the apologia level 2. You don't technically need AFTS because they teach it in a similar way. I purchased it because we didn't start out with Apologia Level 1 and my daughter didn't retain anything from her previous curriculum. 🥴 Apologia has suggestions on what they want your child to review each day so it just worked out that the review is addition and subtraction. It's allowing me to revisit these cornerstone concepts and teach it as if she did have apologia math level 1. I hope this helps! ❤️

@@ShardaeRenee ok this makes sense. Literally your review and response helped me decide. I went ahead and purchased apologia level 1. I’ll flip through it and I guess I will see which one we prefer. I flipped through the First grade MWC Teacher guide last night again, and it’s even busier than the kindergarten TG. Apologia seems like a better fit for us. Hopefully it works out. Thank you.

@@ShardaeRenee I have another question for you. 🙈As a former math teacher, do you think Apologia math is a solid/complete program? Does it teach mental math. I haven’t received my box yet, so I was wondering if had thoughts on this.

Yes. I'm sure you received your box by now. 😆I believe it is. It has review embedded in the lesson but it's still mastery. Let me know what your thoughts are at 1st glance.

@@ShardaeRenee yes I got my box. It looks so easy to teach. The activities and games look funner than the ones in MWC. The lessons look like they flow better too. We are taking some time off and will start apologia in December. I’m so excited! Thank you!

Do you think the math facts would "stick " with only using apologia from the beginning? It seems the way MWC teaches addition and subtraction with the 5/5 10 square block on paper thing (idk what curriculum calls it 😂😅) would help it stick with the kid vs drill and kill with flash cards apologia seems to do...? I know apologia does alot of games and such too....I'm just still torn between deciding between the 2. I'm in a similar situation as you were, where we are halfway through Christian Light Education 1st grade and my son does not have the facts memorized. So...debating doing like you and getting AFTS alongside apologia or doing MWC bc the concepts would be the same as he'd learn in AFTS. Ugh so sorry for the mile long comment!!! 😅😅 Thank you! It's okay! I love long responses and talking about curriculum! 😆 I wish I had a better answer but, I'm not sure. I actually love MWC BUT I couldn't get down with the teachers guide. It was too much for me. That was the deciding factor between Apologia and MWC. They are both great curriculums. I actually bought all 4 MFTS because the addition one was so beneficial to my daughter. I'll be doing subtraction with her this summer for enrichment. She doesn't have the facts memorized BUT she knows what's going on and she had a better math experience all around this year. Let me know what you decide on doing!
