I'll say this as someone who got my hair interlocked by someone who did a horrible job of it in my early months and then switched to another loctitian who knew what they were doing - interlocking is not the problem. Ignorant loctitians are. For your loc size though, I very rarely see people doing interlocks. If I had your size of locs, I would definitely stick to palmrolling. Interlocking does swell to 2-3times it size eventually, but I think it works better for loc counts of 200 or more. Any less, palmrolling is just better for the overall aesthetic IMO.

Hi, I thought i would just make few comments about your first point. I dont think the 'weak spot' your talking about is actually a weak spot. Interlocking compacts the hair more so that palm rolling so the interlocked portion is more dense than the palm rolled section. This difference in density causes the bend/weak spot you saw. I interlock as my method of choice which I do by myself and my locs are about as thick as yours. All in all I think interlocking is best done as a form a maintenance from the get go. I think people find the most problems when they start with palm rolling and then spontaneously decide to switch to interlocking as the inconsistencies are more apparent although that also depends on the type of rotation you use. (2pt rotation is less tight so allows for the locs to swell a bit more allowing for a thicker loc while the 3pt and 4pt rotation are more tight and compact so less sweeling can happen and so you get a thinner loc). Also I honestly think interlocking is best done by yourself rather than by a loctician. In my experience too many locticians interlock way too tight, are too rough or don't really know what they're doing so end up creating holes like you experienced. I think if someone wants to interlock their hair as a form a maintenance it's best to do some research into how to so it yourself that way you can control the tightness, rotation used etc.

I love interlocking my locs. It works for me and I will continue. I have small locs and they work for the amount of sweating I do when exercising. Do what works for you and your loc journey is what I tell anyone that asks what method they should choose. 💞🤗

I started interlocking right off the bat - I wasn't partial to any particular method. I have very thick, 4C hair, low porosity and prone to frizziness. Interlocking works for me - keeps my hair neater for far longer, very low maintenance (I'm lazy when it comes to styling, lol) and since it would very easily tangle when I was a loose natural, locing it allowed it to do what it wanted. It's a win for me!

If I have to do math or use a compass to do my hair it ain’t the method for me

My starter locs have been unraveling for months. My hair never locked at first because of the constant unraveling and interlocking helped my hair get started with locking. Not sure I’ll use this to keep my locks maintained but it certainly help jump start my locking process

I totally get it because early on in my loc journey, l had my locs interlocked because my hair texture is loose and some locs weren't locing but it wasn't a continued maintenance. I just get them palmed rolled now and l love them. I didn't like the feel of the interloced locs. Your locs are gorgeous. I'm almost 5 years in and this is my second journey.

I prefer interlocking. I’ve seen too many with thinning scalps from over twisting. Twisting doesn’t work for me.

I get my locs interlocked because I like to wash my hair weekly. I'll see how it goes, I might try twisting to compare.

So glad I found your video. I started and maintained my locs myself for 2 yrs. Decided to interlock with the new growth. Was huge mistake and my locs are growing from it crazy. Don't know how to fix them and was depressed about it. Your video made me feel better!

I interlocked my super short starter locs to help keep my sections from unraveling when washing. I will be semi free forming from this point forward. But it’s allowing me to wash freely.

At first I thought it was ok however I didn’t like the fact that it hurt 😞, also I hated the pulling and tugging on the roots. I Also I felt it made my Locs look flat and lifeless. My Locs are not as thick as yours so condensing the roots just didn’t work for me personally. I love more fullness hence why I don’t retwist often. I prefer to semi Freeform most of the time to allow my roots to breathe and grow out freely. I also noticed weak spots which I had to cut off eventually. To be honest I don’t know how they managed to pull your thick Locs through the hook. 🤔 I’m not surprised why you experienced damage. The good thing is your Locs are thick and strong so you shouldn’t worry too much. It’s a good thing you didn’t continue on with this method. It’s not for everyone. 😊❤️🙏🏾

Your hair is gorgeous and I would not interlock it either, if I had your mane. I have microlocs and use interlocking. If I may say, the interlocking gives you a tight form. Palm rolling gives you a looser form than interlocking. So it makes since that you can see " weaker" points , or in reality a different form within your locs. I like to describe interlocking as a rope like look and palm rolling as a sponge like roller. Lol from your typical method.

I started locs 5 years ago and interlock. They take longer to dry and have gone brittle, dry and some snapped off.I tied my locs into a knot where weak but it weakened the hair above the knot. I have now joined every 2 locs together. So now I am starting to freeform. In October I will have about 2 inches trimmed off. I first had freeform locs in 1989-91 and they were perfect compared to now. I have stopped dying my hair and accepted the grey sides. I am a white man and my hair is more like a Black persons than a white persons hair. My Black friends used to say I was a throw back lol. My friends mum who is a hairdresser and Black could not get over my hair how coarse, thick and coily it was when natural.-it coils when moisturised but when dry feels and looks like coconut shy.I wish I never watched youtube about interlocking. Freeforming is the way to go.

I have had interlocks for one-year. No problems so far.. 2 pt rotation is what I use and my hair has locked after 6 months..It's best to go to a loctition if you are less experienced with hair because you could damage your hair.

Love your channel! I have been following your journey throughout my 15 months. I started my journey myself with two strand twist. I did my research and decided to interlock since then because of my dry scalp, frequent washing and not wanting to use gel products. I do like my hair, but wish I started off with interlocking because my locs now are fluffy on the ends and the interlocking portion is tight and smaller in appearance. I kind of like the look, but I'm slowly palm rolling the ends to even things out. I do my own hair and I have 5 locs of 101 that have holes. Not visible, but I can feel it. I enjoyed your video....I totally understand everywhere you were coming from. You answered all the questions I've had in my interloc research. Some of the reasons you didn't like about interlocking were reasons I want to do it. I'm 2 weeks into my loc journey and have learned sooooooooooo much!! Thank you for your perspective and contribution to my understanding. Your locs are beautiful BTW but I personally don't want mine that thick and could not imagine pulling them thru the roots!! I had the exact same issues the one time I interlocked. And sadly it annoyed me enough that I cut that set of locs off a few months later. They did thin out at the points for me and the hair was less cylindrical along the interlocked section. Now I’m on a second set of locs and will never interlock. Like you I have thick hair that reverts but I’ve come to love that and I just don’t think interlocking is necessary or beneficial.

OMG! I so appreciate this video! I can't believe l just had the EXACT same experience with having my hair interlocked, without knowing how it was going to mess up my hair! I have always done my own hair, but l decided to have it professionally style for a break and a change. The stylist said and did exactly the same thing to me and my below shoulder locs, that yours did to you. She explained that the process was "crocheting", which l thought would thicken the existing locs. Up to that point, l was only retwisting and palm rolling. By the time l realized my hair was being interlocked, and further more, not being done correctly, it was too late. I'm "tender headed" like you and interlocking made my scalp hurt for days, even though l asked for it to be done looser. I was sooooo depressed! But you gave me hope that my hair will bounce back, but it's going to take at least a year to do so. However, l learned exactly the same things you did about this method. We have the same reasons for stopping. I always just upkept my hair myself with the least amount of manipulation as possible. I barely ever palm rolled either. However, I got to a phase still early in my journey when I needed something to help control all my loose strands. My hair doesn’t want to grow consistently into the locks. In my frustration I ended up interlocking twice and really regretted it. At first it seemed great. After the second time I finally began to notice that my locks were different. It created weakened spots along my locks were it interlocked. I have thick locks with bendy weak spots now. To the average onlooker it’s not very noticeable because my hair is very natural looking. It is uneven, lumpy and bumpy because of my curl pattern and never been manicured professionally. But I can feel the difference along my locks. Interlocking basically condenses and compacts your hair so much more than a retwist ever could achieve.

Is it really a “weak” spot or because interlocking makes tighter locs that’s its demarcation sign. I know holes from incorrect interlocking can create “weak” spots. I started my sons locs with 2strand twist & I won’t interlock his as I want to maintain an even form, I’m not against it as I interlocs mines but I have 185 he has 44. Goodness I love your locs 😍 I’ve interlocked twice because I have some loose hairs at my roots. My first time at 5mo, I messed up and did a 4pt (interlocked root but rest was retwisted) didn’t notice much of an issue. The second time I did a 2pt (maybe around a year) I interlocked entire way for some then only roots for remainder. I’m now 14mo and feeling where I’ve interlocked. It’s not a _big_ difference. I have some thinner locs that seemed to benefit from interlocking - they feel secure and very uniform/cylinder - however for the aforementioned reasonings, interlocking did not rectify my concerns. Still have loose roots 🤷🏿‍♀️ I did like interlocking for wetting my hair at my leisure but seeing as I don’t do that regularly, it wasn’t a dealbreaker for me. I love the look of interlocked locs but I can do without. Loving my retwists/palm rolling. Interlocking also hasn’t really affected the shape or size of my locs. If it has it just blends with the rest of whatever is going on in there so I don’t notice anything appearance wise 😂

I just got my starter locs interlock and to be honest I really hate it. It’s not the stylist fault at all but I just didn’t enjoy the experience of the whole interlocking process. I don’t care much for overly neat looking locs as my scalp has been through a lot. I’m just going to grow it out to next year just so that I can palm roll it. Hate interlocking…….sorry but not sorry

I have soft hair and I wash and condition my hair a lot therefore interlocking works well for me. Everything you described about interlocking is due to someone using the incorrect technique which causes holes, thinning, and an inconsistent loc pattern. Your locs are thick and beautiful 😊

I also have thick locs and started with interlocking. Unfortunately the person didn’t know how to do it well. It’s very difficult to see a good Loctician that interlocks well. Palmrollling is just safer. I also love crocheting. My interlocked ends are also very weak and have breaks in them. My Loctician strengthens it with crochet

No interlocking for me either. The weak points and holes are not something I want to see in my hair

I don't interlock. I have watched people locs who interlock and I think that it makes them look limp and lifeless. No body whatsoever!
