I am a Software Engineer, and I know it's next to impossible to replace Google, Microsoft, and Apple. It's a really difficult task to make a Search Engine like Google and Operating systems. There aren't enough skilled people for these tasks, and those who have, leave India for better Opportunities. First India should focus on retaining these people, by treating them right and removing some evil rules like reservations.

As a government employee, while working on Windows, I've often thought that the government should have its own operating system and browser for privacy reasons.

Linux already exist as free and open source OS, and many Indian (maybe mostly central) organisations (especially research institutes) promote using Linux. But many govt organisations are too lazy to train people in basic Linux (even like Ubunut or similar) or too dumb to adopt new OS other than windows.

Most banking apps are based on .net framework or web apps and it is way is easier to port them to linux, linux distro may not be ubuntu, it can be arch linux, gentoo or a custom distro to have more control over it. or we can even switch to BSD based OS for more security.

In terms of improving quality, not even countries like China became the best since beginning, they took their own learning curve and time. Problem is indigenous products in absence of competition are well...bullshit terrible. Look at USSR built cars. Look at Chinese social media. Look at how long it took for Tara and Mahindra to build cars that are kind of better now but we're terrible for 25 years. Isolation is worse for a country.

If India by chance launch its own search engine it will take time for us to adapt but still it will be worth it .....but the engineers worker and all might get only a minimum salry due to it being based in India with lesser audience than Google.......but we won't have to worry about foreign companies getting our data

I agree with your point on aatmanirbhar bharat.. But unfortunately you are incorrect in some cases.. We already have an Indigenous OS called a BharatOS. But it's adoption is low, because people are habituated with windows or Mac. Linux distro users are low. For maps we have MapMyIndia apps, for payment we have phonepe and paytm. For cloud we are yet to come up with a solution however, there is already a policy by govt I place which forces foreign companies to compulsorily store their data locally in India. Also even if western countries sanction us (l, which they won't, infact they cannot, as their dependency on India is much more than our dependency on them they depend on us for manufacturing industries, maintainance, software development and services, weapons. So if they do think of sanctioning they will end up losing money as most of Indian can survive without 1-2 months of salary due to our nature of saving money.

The solution is to use open source operating system softwares as well as application softwares. Replace Mac and Windows with Linux, Microsoft Office with LibreOffice, Adobe Photoshop with GIMP etc.

Agreed.. definitely a problem for us not having our own tech giants. But India being a huge market and US being capitalist, they will never stop serving us. Even a 5% market cap in India means a lot for their devices bigger than many EU/Asian/American countries combined. Also, even though cloud act seems like a loophole, companies usually demand for on-premise servers located in their respective countries which prevent cloud act from demanding their data. However, it’s still difficult to ensure full privacy.

Software sanction will not much impact India. The reason is that, there is open source option available to each software; either OS, database, any development tool etc. In fact, if US sanctions software on India, then it would be huge loss to all the US based companies. US knows, India would be independent in software field very very fast (whereas, in hardware field, India has begun to). And once India has its own all kinds of software (OS, database, development language, framework and so), then there will not be any need of US based software. JAI HIND.

User acceptance is important step in this case. contribution in open source (Linux , GNU, GPL ) is more important than using closed source project or software( Microsoft, iOS). Using alternatives of these closed source application is may feel difficult in start but its super benificeal in terms of privacy.

Unix and linux is also open source which can’t be banned. And major Enterprise Operating system which is handling worldwide data. For the OS part we are safe. But yes we can make it better and create our own OS by creating our own services merging with open source OSs.

@@pritech8302 it’s nothing about starting from scratch. Thousands of OS created from Unix and Linux: RHEL , X OS, etc are one of them which are at enterprise level. Basic OS has also much more capabilities and can be used as per the requirements.

Mac, windows, Linux are born from Unix and thanks to the creators like Mr. Dennis Ritchie and creator of Linux, Mr. Linus Torvards which made it for the humanity not for a country.
