I don't understand why we want oscar's validation so badly even after knowing that there is a lot of politics that goes on behind the scenes . I think the need of the hour is to get films like tumbbad,sonchariya ,etc to get validation from the Indian audience itself as that is going to help the industry in the long run.

I feel validation at film festivals and critics is more important for the art of filmmaking than validation from audiences for the business of filmmaking... Also, there's nothing revolutionary about Tumbbaad (though a good film), compared to recent global horror films like Get Out, Us, Hereditary, A Quite Place...
@rahulvinalnarayan9743

I completely agree with that video. Listen..if an artsy low-budget film cannot finance its campaign at the Oscars, then worthy production houses must take over and allocate the needed financial resources. In other words sell the film to a production house that could finance that Oscar campaign. - Salam Bombay was a small independent artsy film; Lagaan’s Director was literally unheard of, making the film the biggest sleeper success in Indian cinema history; and Mother India was only a hit after its Oscar buzz..so what happened? How did these films get Oscar nominations? - the answer is fairly simple, THEY TOOK A CHANCE.!! they had sent the right film, financed by the right production houses that helped with this campaigning process. And no Korbin; Gully Boy did not stand a chance. It just was not up to par as compared to other entries from other countries. The films that actually stood a chance, and deservingly so were: - Sonchiriya - Kumbalangi Nights - Tumbbad - Super Deluxe - Jalikattu Rick; that guy didn’t say Joker was a mainstream film...he said that Joker was the most mainstream film AMONGST all the other films nominated that year, which is true.. And as far as nepotism at the Oscars is concerned than remember - the fight against corruption in cinema and the awards industry is not only achieved via administration of transparency and due diligence...good content and supreme artistry also has the potential to cut through nepotism and deliver perspective!! All it takes is one good film and a chance. And that chance can only be attained if india sends quality-filled work to the Oscars and then campaigns the heck out it!! Great reaction video nonetheless. Good conversation. Good debate. Goodnight. Be safe.

Boon/Slang the screenplay in Tumbbad was uniquely written - yes there was a message behind the mythical storyline but what makes the film Oscar worthy is in the way in which the film was written, directed and shot, making all the heavy culture, which might be alien to the typical foreigner, relatable! This makes the film intelligently universal - something jury members always look for which the film then capitalises on during the campaign. Everything in Tumbbad was understated and real - from the way the cinematography weaves it’s way to guide the screenplay to the sound design, score, costuming, production design and brilliant honest performances; does not at any point dictate your feelings to feel for a scene robotically, rather does it authentically. How many horror films do this? I’ll tell you Very very few. There was a good balance of artistry and entertainment...and it would have been something unique amongst the other entries.

Lovely reaction as usual. I love how you guys actually study movies and the demographics where it comes from. I seldom see reaction videos that are filled with genuinely intelligent discussions and do not have random comments about colors/music/dancing/costume when it comes to Indian movies. Coming to the discussion, I strongly agree with most of your points. Although, I would like to understand one factor that Rick mentioned and that is the "American audience". My presumption is (which could be totally wrong) that the audience during the academy movie selection is an audience with higher sensibilities and awareness to the world. Some of these topics of the movies are heavy but when it comes to the audience or the deciding jury of the Academy, I would expect them to have the tenacity to understand and consume world cinema with that much maturity. The art of making movies and telling stories can not and should not be restricted by one's abilities to understand the stories or the intricacies of it. More than me, you would know that the movie makers of such movies do dive deep and research a lot about the topic that they are presenting. A jury is expected to do the same (may be at varying degrees). I find it challenging that American jury/audience at the academy is expecting more of a spoon feed of sorts. Of course watching all the films is time consuming and hence, if it doesn't happen already, the academy should have subject matter experts led groups for the kind of movies to help individuals understand the message or the intricacies in the art. It is not a movie's job to educate while depicting a story but just tell the story with the utmost honesty. This in no means is a negative critique on the academy but a possible way of improving the process. Hopefully, this makes sense and I haven't just blurted something super illogical. Keep up the most amazing work that you guys are doing. We look up to you with great expectations and you always exceed it and set the bar high for yourself. :)

After gully boy was snubbed from the Oscars I guess I saw a vdo from film companion where they listed the top films of all time and gully boy was one of them..I was amazed at that..gully boy wasn't even the best film of 2019😂😂 how can you include it in the best films of all time..just showed that they had to do these things and give gully boy all the awards just to prove that their decision of sending it to oscars was right..gully boy is only a decent film..nothing to go Gaga abt it..so overrated it is..it's high time we send good films and there are films made every year here which are worthy of Oscar nominations..sending gully boy was a joke.. absolutely disastrous

The topmost film authority of India is the worst thing that can happen to Indian film industry. It is so much polluted that even the prestigious national awards are given to the likes of propoganda films which please the government. True artists are ignored and a specific bunch of people are hailed in the process. Otherwise there is no justification for ignoring films like Jallikkattu and Kumbalanghi nites and settling for crap movies. And the most important thing is that there is no point in expecting a positive change( atleast in the next successive years). #we viewers deserve better......

Also, given the diversity of our movies, the several languages and genres, movies commenting on so many Social issues; I believe that it's very disheartening to not have a legit and credible award of our own which can look through the entertainment side of award shows and appreciate the beauty and the art of film making. It would be great to see the best regional movies competing with the best of bollywood movies for that year. I think it will also help us identify the right contenders and make us wholesomely embrace India's cinema.

Please watch this movies and thank me later. My recommendations to you two (Spoiler alert 'A VERY LONG LIST') 1. Maheshinte Prathikaaram - Feel Good movie and one of the best in that category. A regional revenge story plotted in a cinematic background of beautiful Idukki and a wonderful cast to uphold the story - available on Netflix 2. Uyare - Indulging and Inspiring Drama about an acid attack victim (I like chhapaak too not a comparison on any level Uyare and Chhapaak are two different type of movie on a common theme with different narrative structure and both are good in their respective space). A Parvathy special movie with amazing cast supporting her in each and every scene of the movie. One of my favourite movie - available in Netflix 3. Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum : Can be Categorised as a Crime drama but it is much more than that & realistic in every sense (it's a slow burner kind of movie but have an awesome acting by fahadh- Suraj-Nimisha) - available in hotstar 4. Angamaly Diaries : It's an action thriller and have introduced 86 debutant actors in this movie. Technical brilliance, screenplay and a story that attached to a place in Kerala called Angamaly (It was a huge hit and was critically acclaimed). Food, culture and wild nature it's story keep you on your toes - available in Netflix 5. Traffic : It's a thriller which is inspired by a true event in Kerala (with some cinematic storytelling included for creative liberty). When a superstar's daughter needs a heart transplant, a dying journalist's parents agree to help her. But the only way to expedite the operation is by navigating a busy road amidst heavy traffic and more events/stories intertwined with it (their is a Hindi remake too if you want to watch it). - available in hotstar 6. Take Off : It's a thriller drama and it's awesome movie inspired by a true event. A Parvathy special movie with amazing supporting roles.Sameera, an Indian nurse working in Iraq, and her colleagues are held hostage by terrorists. Indian ambassador Manoj uses his wit and shrewdness to rescue them and get them out of the country alive. - available in Hotstar 7. Virus : It's pandemic disease drama and a thriller of it's own kind. (Nipah virus is a nasty disease to say the least. It is a member of the henipavirus genus of paramyxoviruses which also includes Hendra virus. The first outbreak of Nipah resulted in 265 human cases with 105 dying, a 40 percent mortality rate). A good watch for current situation in India. - available on Amazon prime video. 8. Sudani from Nigeria : It's a sports drama and the plot is - Majeed, a football manager, recruits three Nigerian footballers for his team. When Samuel, one of the players, is injured, Majeed lets him stay at his house and over time, they develop a close bond. One of a kind unique movie and Soubin Shahir's acting was top notch. - available on KZfaq movies, Google play movies and Netflix. 9. Parava : It's drama with a distinctive narrative structure. Story, character and cinematography with substance abuse a main part intertwined to it makes a must watch Shane-Soubin and Dulquer Salman (Extended Guest Appearance) with Amal Shah as Irshad aka 'Ichappi' Govind V. Pai as Haseeb put forth a realistic portrayal of the characters in Fort Kochi and characteristics of the region. Movie plot is - Irshad and Haseeb, two teenage boys from Mattanchery, share a passion for pigeon flying, a local game. Irshad soon opens up about a tragic incident that ruined many friendships in the neighbourhood. One of my favourite. Soubin in triple role as a Director, Screenplay writer and actor has done a great job. - available on hotstar. 10. Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25 : It's a Sci-fi drama movie and the plot of the movie is - Bhaskara, a conservative villager, hates the idea of his son relocating to Russia for a job. However, when his son brings a robot to care for him, he develops an unlikely bond with the machine. A Suraj and Soubin special movie and amazing performance by Suraj (a comedian in early stages of his career and now an awesome character actor). - available on Amazon prime video 11. Moothon : Moothon (transl. Elder brother, screened at the Toronto International Film Festival as The Elder One) is a 2019 Indian crime/action thriller film written and directed by Geetu Mohandas, and jointly produced by S. Vinod Kumar, Anurag Kashyap, Ajay G. Rai and Alan McAlex. Featuring a bilingual narrative in Malayalam and Hindi, the film stars Nivin Pauly, Sobhita Dhulipala, Shashank Arora, Melissa Raju Thomas,Sanjana Dipu and Roshan Mathew. Anurag Kashyap wrote the dialogues in Hindi. It's Geetu's second feature-length directorial and debut film in Malayalam. The film tells the story of a 14 year old child from Lakshadweep who comes to Mumbai in search of his elder brother. Brilliant, dark and authentic in every sense. Haven't release in any OTT platform, but when it's eventually there please watch it you won't regret it and I think Korbin will like it because of it's gruesome cinematography. 12. Jallikattu : Jallikattu premiered on 6 September 2019 at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and received widespread critical acclaim. The film was showcased at the 24th Busan International Film Festival under the section 'A Window on Asian Cinema'. It was released in home state Kerala on 4 October 2019. Lijo Jose Pellissery received Best Director trophy at the 50th International Film Festival of India. The film won the Best Sound and Best Editing awards at the 7th Aurangabad International Film Festival on 9 February 2020. Plot : Kalan Varkey is a buffalo butcher, whom the entire village(a collection of interesting characters) relies on for fresh meat. A regular ritual of buffalo slaughter goes haywire for Kalan Varkey, when the animal breaks lose and creates havoc across the village. Fingers get pointed, the police are called in, and the entire village gets sucked into catching the errant animal. Mob mentality soon prevails. The entire village is led by adversaries Kuttachan and Anthony(who have old scores to settle) and they take the matter into their own hands. The film also focuses on subplots like the father of a bride deciding menu for next day marriage, Sophie's problematic love triangle, unemployed youth and their pathetic ennui expressed through needs for validation that becomes a burden on the community, among others. The dadaist ebb and flow of the story strikes an uneasy balance between megalomania, lewdness and absurd frenziness. Brutally honest depiction of human behavior and one of most chaotic movie I watched in a theatre 'a must watch'. Available on Amazon prime videos. If you reach here then thanks for reading and these are the movies I recommend incase you want to keep some movie in que to watch from mollywood (Malayalam Industry) on covid quarantine days☺️. Thank me later...☺️✌️

One question if u guys could help me with! "If u are nominating one film (parasite) from the list of all foreign language nominated(IFF) films in the main category (Best Film), doesn't that mean it's better than those nomiated alongside it in the Int'l foreign film, then what's the point of keeping that award(IFF)?? "
@tweentycenturyrock
@tweentycenturyrock 4 жыл бұрын
No point but that's how it works. But it's not possible to nominate 5 foreign films in main category. And OSCAR wants to show that they care about other countries films so that's why that category exists. And very rarely a foreign movie also get nominated to main category.
@jayantjj
@jayantjj 4 жыл бұрын
This year was an anomaly so it looks stupid but understand that there are many foreign/international submissions every year which create their own reputation through their attachment with Oscars. A movie that gets nominated alongside Parasite will take pride in it and will be noticed. It would have been stupid to say that we are going to nominate Parasite for best movie so let's just not bother other foreign films. Think about it!

The way Slumdog Millionaire(Danny Boyle at the helm helped) won at the Oscars n the fiasco of what the 'Indianised' Oscars that year was a strange, bizarre (proud yes but one has to wonder why..) experience. Yes A. R. Rahman won but not for what he was known or famous for (The singer Sukhwinder Singh who sang this song 'Jai Ho' so beautifully (the highlight of the film were the leads n this song) was never even mentioned which was heartbreaking.. Oprah goes on to invite him (Rahman Sir) in her show n makes him perform where he just sings 'Jai Ho' n everyone looks perfectly fine with that(sheesh). Resul Pookutty won for sound design ensemble which is a very proud achievement for the gentleman n our country 🙏❤️🌹But having said that, it did make people look at Indians n India differently especially when they saw the leads didn't look as pathetic or poor at the Oscars. Folks especially outside India n essentially 'Foreign' are paying attention to more Indian content especially movies from India. With both of you and youtubers like Jaby showing so much respect, admiration and support for Indian cinema and its wonderful people, maybe one day we might get people to accept the brilliance of Indian cinema(from every state n film industries) without misconceptions, prejudices or disrespect... Thank you both for doing this video.. Great one n beautiful authentic reactions🙏😊😍❤️🌹Stay safe everyone and don't risk yourselves unduly 🌹💕

Infact they don't even submit good Hindi films. For eg Malayalam film vanaprastham had the potential to win the award in foreign film category. The cameraman was Renato Berta the great European cameraman. The movie had some great cinematography, characterization. As far as I know these movies should had been definitely submitted 1.iruvar(Craftwise the best film made in the country) 2.super deluxe 3.vanaprastham 4.jalikattu
