The real question is ...why don't black people practice the same exclusionary customs as other people? We want everybody to love us , when we don't even love ourselves.

I was engaged to an Indian woman whose parents didn't know she was even dating a black man. Once they found out, they threatened she would be disowned if she continued dating me. She didn't want ro be disowned so she broke off the engagement. Year's later she got married to a white man and the family was celebrating like it was a new year's Eve party. I've seen this time and time again. Yes, they want them ro marry their own BUT they would rather have their children marry a white person than a black person!

The problem is focusing on the wrong things. Who GAF about what some other people think about you. Nobody has time for people whose minds are clouded with the fear and ignorance of bigotry or prejudice. Be about your purpose. Raise your standards of excellence. Reach for the highest status after all that's what's respected worldwide. Ask yourself, are they worthy of your time and effort, especially considering what invaluable assets (both in character and commerce) that you possess. Concede nothing without a demand. Let them wonder if You will find them acceptable. Make yourself the prize.

In India marriage is very complex. It isn't just about race (either white or black) or religion. It is also about communities and also within communities, you cannot marry someone closely related (from both parents' sides in order to restrict any level of incest). After you satisfy these criteria, you also match the janam kundili (a Hindu birth certificate detailing the constellation at the time of birth) so to marry, they also match these constellations. Finally, marriages in India are for life and it is like two families get bonded for ever.

Oshay hit nail on the head... You gotta prefer yourself. My cousin was in a relationship with a woman from a west/south asian group and after 2 ½ years of trying to appease her family he broke it off with her. He said he got tired of trying to show them that he was a *"Good Black."* It took longer than I would have liked, but I was glad when him made the decision. You shouldn't have to justify ethnic identity just to be with someone. B1

As an Indian man, there are many layers within the indian culture when dating/marrying outside of their race. Now I have seen relationships between Indian girls with black men and each of them ended up having a child and now they are single. This isn't even a race thing, this has become a cultural. I know black people that strongly believe in the family unit which aligns to traditional indian values however the western influence where a family unit is not priority and parents fear their child will be a single mother where the child has no father to raise and protect them. This is why stereo types plays such a huge part in why its frowned upon. I don't subscribe to all the indian traditional views but I understand why. This isn't a straight forward subject where it's purely based on racism. Indians have been racist to themselves with the caste system. But I have dated a black woman in the past and I love women regardless of their colour or culture. It comes down to culture more than colour imo.

Society were conservatives women couldn´t drive cars or even open a bank account by themselves needed the father consent. Please when you speak Western there are much countries in Europe not only USA. We are not all the same. As you said there are much layers to the WESTERN word. South countries are more similar to India in family oriented values, society evolve with time but we are not ignorant and not libertine or loose. I live in Spain and i know how difficult women had it here.

If you look at Caribbean, we can see inter racial marriages once cultural bridges are made, or cultures overlap and merge. I certainly think some understand of other’s values make an impact. I have seen educated Kenyans and Nigerians have strong ambition and family orientation which will fit very well with Indians but there is not wide awareness of it. In last few decades growing interaction of Indians in the west made the latter accept whites more. But stereo types of indisciplined black man still persist. Need to see more educated black men. I think Nigerian and Kenyan black men and women will probably the first ones Indians can easily relate to and connect.

If Im being honest, I can understand why other races would be particularly worried if their kid brought home a Black person to marry. No one wants their kid to marry into a community that has such a high level of self hate ( so many Black folk dont even want to deal with each other). Also, look at the conditions of most Black communities around the world. No parent in their right mind would want their kid to feel the lack of community support and broken down social network that the Black community shows daily. It is maddening that Black communities are in the state they are in. It wreaks of instability and danger. Yes, racism exists too, but it isnt the reason for all of what is going on in the Black community.

This here is the conversation we black people need to converse regularly until we get the value of it. We black people in this modern time doesn't talk about this issue at all, the urge to assimilate into other race is ubiquitous. Sticking to your own race is all about race loyalty not racism, racism is something totally different. Every race is loyal to their own kind except for black people, which to me personally is a curse for us blacks. Racism is when one race uses their power and authority to deny other race their right to prosper, live or survive. 😎💯💪🏾✊🏾

Blessings to you all for this conversation because it is a very important one that needs to be sorted out.Personally I am of the opinion that we must at the very least stay within our race because when we do not usually we as individuals and as a group loose resources that we can never get back and therefore we find ourselves being stagnant in financially, economically, educationally and spiritually,it is evident as we watch our people get taken by others in so many ways.We must practice "Sankofa"and get back to our once greatness and there is no way to do that when we allow other races and cultures to profit from our labor!

Speaking as someone who is classified as 'Black American', too many African/Africoid/Indigenous Black American people seem to be caught up marrying into another race of people and into another culture. And increasing numbers of Black men in particular seem to be too eager to marry women that are not of their same cultural/ethnic background. We don't want to admit it, but many of us are not pleased with the physical characteristics we have amongst ourselves. Note that when Black people, especially men, marry outside the culture/race, they're aiming for women with lighter skin and relatively straighter hair. They're not trying to build families with people who are unmistakably Black/Black African in appearance. Let's face it - we're considered a sorry bunch because too many of us are too desperate to be accepted by ANYONE else, and we don't respect and honor ourselves to the same high degree that other groups of people respect and honor themselves. We have to re-learn to be pleased with how the Creator made us, and be willing to share that love and admiration with others who mirror us in appearance and behavior.

Thank you for this well scripted episode. Being a Kenyan national of Indian origin in the USA, I like what Agaba Tumusime explains about his dad's stand and wisdom. While studying in Chicago in my grad class I did a book review on a book written by a Jewish author she writes on the similar lines. Here's my book review from my class on this subject: In conclusion, the importance of retaining one's exclusive traditions while reaching out and being open is evident: The victim group's narratives are neither "misogynistic, and boundary stories are not xenophobic. Maintaining and celebrating group identity without reinforcing estrangement and enmity between groups. Healthy boundaries are essential to retain separate traditions and not be so homogenized that we have no sense of identity or continuity or appreciation of historical purpose, advantages and dangers of openness, and the difficulty of maintaining identity without exclusivity" (P.352). The author acknowledges that the problem of healthy unity in a balanced diversity remains to be solved. This book is a great tool. Sharma, K. When I was growing up in the US, I remember learning about arranged marriages. I felt so happy that I would never have to deal with that. We are indoctrinated to believe that is oppressive, and people should just be free to do whatever they want. Now, I am the mother of a teenager. There is no way I would allow my son to pick a wife without offering my wisdom. Looking back, I wish my family could have been more involved in my relationships, vetting the men I dated. I probably would have had less heartache and wasted time. Arranged marriages have a bad name among common folk, but all people who are looking to build generation wealth do it. Those people are perfectly OK with those in the lower level of society mixing it up because without unity, there is no power. Now, most parents in the US feel out of place telling their adult kids who to marry. I suggest that we have a relationship vetting service to help our people, especially our women, with selecting a husband. Not just match making but actually vetting whereby both people are subjected to the same invasive scrutiny an Indian would have to go through to marry another Indian. Being Indian is only a prerequisite. Beyond that, there is more vetting into his family, his cousins, is anyone crazy on his mother side😅 Yeah, that's all useful information.

Those platforms (TV shoes, social media streams) are using the breakdown of relationships between Black people as entertainment. We would be facing so much less confusion and be able to meet on the same page more easily if we had a body of shared cultural norms and values that we respected at all costs. This was an interesting take. I am a product of an Asian Indian marrying a black man. My mother and her side of the family are from Mumbai , Maharashtra, India. I can speak in both Hindi and English and i know some Marathi. I was raised in a household where my father didn’t reject our mother raising us as Hindus . She always told us we come from a rich history/culture so i grew up and still to this day am extremely proud to be Indian. Even though i am just half. One one side I’m not fully black on the other I’m not fully Indian. But idc. I embrace both my cultures. My father is a black man but he was from Trinidad. He was married to my mother until his death in 2016 (RIP) …. Indians marry Indians because it’s easier marrying someone who is born from and who knows the customs of your same culture as well as following the same religion. That does not mean Indians won’t marry outside of their race. Indians will happily marry someone who keeps their interest and who is interested in their culture and id say most would prefer mates that doesn’t mind converting to Hinduism. Shri Krishna tells us to love all regardless of who it is they’re praying to or believing in. But Shri Krishna also wants Hindus marrying Hindus because within the culture marriage is sacred and it is what our Deva wants us to do. We are a culture going back to BC. We are one of the most oldest culture on earth if not THE oldest. The caste system has nothing to do with skin color. It has absolutely everything to do with Last Name, your family lineage and occupation. The Brahmans are at the top of the caste system and most people of the modern world aren’t in the position as a Sudra . But a Brahmin will never marry a Sudra. They could somehow fall in love and nope. The Brahmin family will never allow it. The book Devdas is a infamous story that depicts how caste system works . If i was living in India , i would be Viasya . I am a Chaudhari through my mother and her family are also married into Patel. Who are landowners. I didn’t mean to turn this into a biography… i just came across the video and the title caught my interest … i wanted to see what was going to be said

The comment section on this channel proves that if pale skinned ppl didn't exist, the "dark races" consisting of many ethnicities would still be indifferent/vain, hostile and competitive towards one another. The Europeans/Caucasians belief system just brought out behaviors and attitudes in the indigenous ppl that was already dormant within them. When ppl begin to look beyond the pigment of the skin, they will soon realize that the battle is really with the spirit/souls of ppl in general.

A few questions / thoughts: 1. Was the inter-ethnic marrying within African nations a common thing in the pre-colonial past or was it the "liberal" ideas that were eventually adopted that led any walls that existed? 2. The speakers on the right are American raised so there is a blend (and acceptance, not rejection) of the liberal values and their positive scenarios (which I don't they would want to give up for a more-strict ethnic culture if they had the choice) with the observation of the strength of homogenous cultures. I think part of the inter-ethnic and interracial (international marriage) is the at least ideal that we are all one and the same, and do not need to ostracize or be biased against romantic/love relationships across those lines. I mean, in theory, was it the highest form of integration than marriage. Maybe it has been naive and short-sighted, and maybe dark-skinned people (Africans in the context of this topic) have been seen as the lesser option in the eyes of others in the course of the integration of ethnicities and races. For example, in my home country, Nigeria, there were strong inter-ethnic conflicts and mistrust for centuries even before the colonial powers came in. Difference breeds mistrust (possible inescapable) which can lead to violent reactions if there is a sense of ethnic bias in power dynamics. There was an intentional push to expose people from different ethnic groups, including poking through the walls of long-standing marital restrictions, leading hopefully over time to more understanding and less conflicts (or at least the black-and-white mindsets that can lead to violent conflicts) and essentially spreading (lessening) the "risk" that would lead to "otherness".

Giving that amassed wealth back to groups of people who already despise us! Build up your own women! I respect tribal traditions, but he way I see it, as long as the person is black it's ok to marry them if the two can make their cultural differences work...Oshay is point too, by the way! I enjoy listening to this podcast. Marrying outside ethnicity is a dicey issue. I advocate marrying whom ever one chooses or who makes him/her happy. But i prefer that marriage should be within ethnicity. But another challenge we have is the diversity of the black race. Blacks is the most diverse race with so many ethnicity, so it's a bit complex. In Nigeria alone, we have over 300 tribes and cultures. There are some tribes that also cut across other countries as well. We have the Fulanis in Nigeria and other neighbouring countries. There is also the economic situation to it. Most people travel outside to earn a living. You're gonna meet different cultures and race. What am i expected to do ?

My sister in laws sister had a black partner but left her. Unfortunately too many times black brother do not stay around and this discouraged a lot of asian sister. I may be generalising but from traditional set up where divorce is frowned upon. Cultural familiarity breaks down a lot of obstacles. its not about race in the west but security. As an Asian, when it comes to marriage, they look for family stability, lineage, economic compatibility even with in their etheric back ground. . At the same time Black communities need to protect its own community as Malcolm X once tried to do. Self respect is born out of being grounded in your own history, culture but unfortunately years of brain washing and thought somehow Black in US (lacking traditional values) are better then African (with traditional values). For me , I have no problem my son or daughter marrying into black community provided they are strong man and woman grounded in Islamic faith with real tangible moral ethical values.
