Households in Bengaluru, dependent on water supply from the Cauvery river or water tankers, are preparing for the situation to worsen as the city stares at a severe summer.
Whitefield and Varthur, which house the Information Technology corridor in eastern Bengaluru, are some of the worst-affected areas by the drinking water crisis.
As the city stares at a long, hot summer. K.C. Deepika and K.V. Aditya Bharadwaj report on the worries of the people at a time of drought.

Big apartment complex developers refuse to incorporate rainwater collection in their plans. And people waste water. Washing machines ruin at 45 min cycles everyday because people need a minimum of 3 changes of clothes. Until we change our wasteful lifestyle and developers incorporate sustainable methods in their building plans, we are doomed

Bengaluru has been booming as an IT sector.More IT companies means more people migrating to the city,more infrastructure and more stress on water resources. Companies need to start work from home as an alternative solution. Work from Home means, working from your actual town and no mandatory visit to the office twice a week.

I'm from a place never witnessed water crisis. My employer forced me to migrate to BLR, Whitefield an yr back after mandatory WFO all 5 days. They aren't giving transfer too. This city is visibly over populated & govt not restricting in flow. Already paying heavy rent + maintenance, on top of it now I'm buying water 🤐 Mid 2000s I enjoyed BLR as a boon & now living here has become a curse!

@stayhappy9324
@stayhappy9324 2 ай бұрын
It will be denied automatically if there aren't any resources left. Bangalore , Karnataka is only so big. Already with or without govt, forest land gets encroached upon. Bangalore itself has expanded, Mysore and B'lore aren't satellite towns with tonnes of empty spaces between. Even if they make lakes, one problem will be solved, so again loads of people will move in. It's not the size of India. The government Cong or BJP or whoever needs to grow and develop several other towns, and hope the population doesn't explode everywhere, but is evenly distributed. If nobody liked Kannada, or any other language , they wouldn't have to move, but stay in their comfortable language regions.

Problem is that the ministers have various business interests specially in real estate sector. They pressurised the companies to bring people back, saying local small businesses, autowalas are suffering. If you check, most of the tech parks are related to some minister. If people go back, they don't like it. So their greed has brought us here. If you don't have conscious people at the top, they will pull you towards disaster.

One crucial aspect overlooked here is the transformation of Bangalore before 1990, when it was abundant in trees. The presence of trees played a significant role in conserving groundwater. Here's how we can solve this for a sustainable life in Bengaluru: 1. Recover and replinish the lakes that are still remaining 2. Implement rain water harvesting 3. Implement sewage treatment 4. Recover the river. Stop pouring sewage directly into it 5. In the outskirts of Bengaluru build new reservoirs - pumping water to city isn't a huge cost now. We should have a network on reservoirs that store and supply sufficient water for Bengaluru and the outskirts. 6. Have a plan to retire usage of water tankers. Every house should have water connection and every house should get treated water - people are ready to pay. People are already paying a lot more. 7. In the new gated communities, enforce building up of ponds wherever possible 8. Deploy cloud seeding in the years/months of low rainfall. Just do it without deliberating too much whether it will be natural rainfall or cloud seeding rainfall. We need to look forward and plan. Spend money where it is needed to build a beautiful and liveable Bengaluru.

In the tapestry of time, Bangalore reached its zenith by 2012, yet the canvas was marred by irregular strokes of development over the years. Like leaves scattered by the wind, it leaves us wondering why the seeds of progress were not sown in cities like Mysore and Hubli, where fertile resources lay waiting to blossom into the next hubs of prosperity. Just as a river finds its course through the valleys, people and companies flowed towards Bangalore, enticed by the allure of quick returns. The garden of opportunity seemed to flourish, yet the roots of sustainable development were neglected. It's as if the architects of progress forgot the beauty that could have blossomed in other landscapes. Karnataka's potential is like a garden waiting to be cultivated; Mysore and Hubli, like unexplored petals, yearn to unfurl. The state government, akin to a wise gardener, has the power to plant the seeds of balanced growth. By nurturing these cities with strategic care, they can foster a garden of prosperity where the fruits of development are shared by many. Let's envision a future where each city becomes a vibrant bloom in the bouquet of progress. The focus shifts, not just on quick gains, but on cultivating a garden where the air is pure, the waters flow abundantly, and the pathways are free from the chaos of unchecked growth. Karnataka, like a guardian of nature, can sow the seeds of sustainable development, ensuring that future generations revel in the blossoms of basic amenities and civic harmony.

Very well put. There should be a place in every person's mind and in every leaders vision for our tiny existence on this beautiful planet. Nature has for uncountable ages been able to find balance and growth. With what we are capable of, we owe to the earth (our family) and to our own selves to contribute positively and grow harmoniously, and feel like a child that wants to make its mother proud. We may have larger frontiers in the future, not to conquer, but to join hands with. But rushing blindly ahead can only take you so far before you crash. And for the sake of the individual, all lives must be made equal and worth living as their own unique and precious experience. Healthy competition can be designed in a way that no one should find the need to sell their souls to get ahead, because there is no one direction in life, just a uniform "sphere" as far as the eye can see. Progress is just adaptation. Yesterday it was math and philosophy, today it is the internet and AI, and it may not be too long before we draw plans in cosmic neighbourhoods, but then again it may be back to playing with sticks and stones, just maybe in another world. As humans we will always be human, so let's not forget that in a rush to get somewhere.

Digging borewells wont solve the problem but conserving water, rainwater harvesting, recharging ground water table, strict restrictions on vicinity of river water bed and strict no lakes encroachment policy will solve this extremely severe problem. Every human being must understand that we need to realise our responsibility also to 'NOT WASTE WATER'. WATER IS LIFE AND WE SHOULD NOT WASTE IT.
