If you thought Canberra was nothing but pollies and public buildings…think again. Tony’s walk through the nation’s bush capital proves that the city its founding fathers built to rival the great European capitals is chock-a-block with some very surprising hidden history.

So I just had to make this comment. This was bizzare. Tony Robinsons walking history shows were one of my dads favourite shows, so to have him do one in Canberra, my dad would have loved. That White Lady Funeral Home was where my dads funeral was.

Just came home to Melbourne from visiting my nation's capital and I loved it! My parents brought me to Canberra when I was 7 years old (new Parliament wasn't even built), and I had never returned. Well, I returned after 38 odd years this week and I LOOOOOVED it. It actually made me very proud to be Australian...when you see what our Parliament was built around and the meaning behind how 'modest' it is. We're a great country, with problems, but we're a WONDERFUL country and this must be our focus...because we deserve to be proud of who and what we are...warts and all.

Dear Tony, I love your body of work. To discuss the history of Canberra without mentioning Walter Burley Griffin, the Public Service, Duntroon, ANU (1st in Australia, 30th in the world) or Jervis Bay is surprising. I grew up in that big country town. It is where I did my primary, secondary and tertiary education. I agree that it was a place without solar panels UNTIL the Raiders and the Brumbies came along. It is the best place in Australia for young families (quality and availability of education, services, sporting facilities, parks and playgrounds) but probably still the worst place for teenagers (venues, music and outlets). Just a little story from my youth: I asked a girl out from another school and she seemed delighted. My mother, a Public Servant, whom I had not informed of my new friend, advised me that I needed to be careful because she was the daughter of a Deputy Secretary. Canberra is/was a very incestuous place.

It's amazing how long ago this episode was filmed. Where Tony is standing on grass is in the middle of Northbourne Avenue (last 40 second of the episode) and has been replace by the light rail line into the city, the ugly mid-century concrete building over his right shoulder and the other three buildings on that block have all been demolished and replaced with two high rise (for Canberra) office towers and the blue glassed building over his left shoulders has also had a face lift. So much has changed over the last 10 years.

*Filming date: May 2013* From what I can gather, production of _Tony Robinson’s Time Walks_ Season 2 was completed in 2013. The original Canberra episode air date was 24 February 2014. Given the leaves are falling, then it is obvious that the season is autumn with the filming date being May 2013.

I spent a couple of years of my high school years in Canberra. One of those years was at Campbell High School at the base of Mount Ainslie right next door to the National War Memorial. I grew up in Canberra, Ainslie in particular. From my experience, those kind of derogatory comments won't get much of a reaction. What does get completely get Canberrans' collective goat is when in lazy journalism, instead of saying "the federal government did such and such" instead it will read "Canberra did such and such." Canberra is no just the parliament and this kind of conflation of the residents of Canberra with whatever the federal government might be doing is an annoyance.

Hahaha. Us local kids rolled down the lawn many many times. Canberra was designed to accommodate the political hub of the country. The origins were never aimed at tourism, but at making life 'relaxing and pleasant' for the people living there. 'To facilitate them being in the best of mind to perform their political responsibilities'

i've heard that the decision to make canberra the capitol of australia was not unlike the decision to make washington dc the american capitol. new york and philadelphia were both slugging it out over who was gonna be the capitol of the new united states in the same way that sydney and melbourne were slugging it out over who was gonna be the capitol of australia and so in both places at separate times with zero knowledge over each other's situations they settled on somewhere neutral neither of which had anything special about it and had to be made into the capitol from scratch. that's what i've heard anyway.

He lost me at the beginning, as he appeared ignorant of the winning design of Canberra being by Walter and Marion Griffin. Much less - the controversy of their winning the competition as Americans, when there had been a strong campaign by the local architects to restrict the competition to British Empire architects only. The second winner was actually Finnish. The local bureaucrats wanted to make up their own design by taking bits and pieces from all the entries. Fortunately the local Minister for Home Affairs, King O'Malley, squashed that. But in so doing Walter and Marion earned the undying enmity of those locals in charge, who did their best to stymy all Walter's efforts. Leading to a Royal Commission in 1917 - being so important at that time of World War 1. And Walter's resignation in 1920, having had one too many insults from those still resisting his design, his planning and his directions. Castlecrag in Sydney was to be the eventual beneficiary.
