It presents an ideal of what D&D could be, with a masterful DM and cooperative and collaborative players that are not murder hobos and are fully invested in the game world. Sadly, most games never even come close.

Um, yeah, what it could be with professional actors. It sets expectations on the high side. You will be lucky if you find a cohesive group in a year or two, let alone one that resembles anything similar to Critical Role.

simple, find the nerds that are also theatre kids. badabing badaboom. these nerds here were also theatre kids, you don't need to be professional actors to play a character and role play focused game, you just need people who are into that stuff.

Yeah first you gotta find people willing to get into it, then you have to find a DM capable of creating layered stories for the players to participate in. Once you've done that you gotta get players willing to get out of their shells and be someone they aren't for the most part.

I disagree. Encounter RP has all of these things, maybe more, and arguably done better than Critical Role. What they don't have is the cool factor of working in Hollywood. And they also didn't get the Stranger Things nostalgia bump.

@Cyanide well if she's so bad why is she among most employed female voice actors then? she doesn't have that big of a vocal range as male VAs yet she makes up with her performance. she's long way from jannifer hale though, but jen have been around longer

It took me embarrassingly long to realize Ashley played a minor role in The Avengers. Also, after a quick Wikipedia search, I realized I had unwittingly experienced the work of 5 of the cast members over time. The more you know.

Honestly the biggest thing about the show for me is the enthusiasm and energy of the group. Everyone is cheers for the good moments laughs at the funny or silly moments and sobers up for the somber parts. It's like a laugh track in a sitcom, but genuine.

IF they notice the flask has anything written instead of staring at the person talking about destroying people with lightning... IF they remember what it says. IF they put it together that it's not just one of Sam's bits. I think it's good. Pointing it out may have made it worse though!

Kid trunks or lust are probably more wide reaching. Dragonball is huge and has been for so long and Lust is from one of the anime you get people to watch to get them into anime

Definitely Jaina proudmoore. I had seen dragonball but no idea that was her. My hubby got me to watch it because he was like its illidan, jaina, mograine, turalyion, / gallywix, plus leo from tmnt playing dnd together. You'll love it. And I did lol.

Sure you can go to them when you fancy a break or a change of pace. Any time there's a big story shift in the main game is probably a good time to delve sideways into those ones. FYI the Honey Heist is great for young kids (the others' one shots are a fair bit darker!)

This is a great compilation, that took a lot of research work and editing skill combined with a vast knowledge of the foibles of Critical Role covering hundreds of hours of footage and harvesting the most choice morsels for our happiness. I am sorry youtube spent a month waiting to show me this, its really well done.

Well.. Obviously, like almost any form of entertainment the WHO is HALF of the WHY... But if you need more... starting at 6:15 in the video here is what it lists: (1) Commitment to Character, (2) Troubled Pasts, (3) Questionable Decisions, (4) Dice Rolls, And (5) Epic Battles.

It still left out a lot of whys like pop culture references, merchandise, sold out live events, and most importantly their charity work. And only focusing on campaign 2 with no mention at all of the campaign that actually got them where they are today feels wrong somehow.

They are the why. It's about the players, their characters, and the decisions that make. It's that simple. They just offer the most in depth, entertaining and accessible actual play on the internet. It's also a matter of timing, people have been congregating around D&D in the internet for a number of years and now we have a common interest to rally around. Critical Role is singlehandedly responsible for an exponential growth of that community, but they succeeded early on because they had an audience. Even from early on the enthusiasm of their growing fanbase made it evident that the people wanted and needed something like what they are doing

The WHY is simple, but many here probably won't like the answer. 1) Famous players/DM who are good at role-playing 2) Well funded studio/crew 3) Started on an already known channel 4) The game they play has millions of fans already Notice how I mentioned nothing about story or great characters??? That's because many other D&D live stream shows have great stories and characters, but no one knows about them (relatively speaking) because the channel has no money for production value and isn't filling the screen with famous voice actors. Critical Role defeated the very first problem any new show has to face, before they even started the first episode. That first problem being notoriety. Critical Role had the fan base behind the names on the show and that fan base spread the word when CR started. And once the money came in for the sets and so forth, it took off and never looked back. Proof of what I'm talking about is in movies that have a bad or merely OK script and did well in the box office because of the well chosen cast, while great stories with horrible casting bombs.

You forgot to mention the AMAZING fanbase, and the MANY charities they have donated to. Not to mention their countless Devotion to teaching children about math, science, English, and Imagination. Their Devotion to not only their jobs, the show, each other, and the fanbase is unwavering.

I was waiting for the high noon as well, alas... Anyway, my guess is the clips of Ashley are from the show Blindspot. Shooting of episodes for this show is the main reason for her absences from Critical Role.

Probably because Matt (supposedly) hates hearing that line parroted/joked and while the cast jokes about it indirectly, the line itself is avoided. Seems fair in respect to that to not have a clip of that in the various roles.

At the end of the day, D&D is hanging out with friends and playing a game. Its telling stories and having fun. Which is exactly what these guys do. They're friends who come together to play D&D. They crack jokes and eat snacks and just enjoy the time with each other.The fact that they're all amazing storytellers and great actors just makes things so much more awesome. Also, side note, apparently Ashley was also in Growing Pains, she's the younger sister.

been thinking, yeah i know, dangerous, lol, that being said, if i could pick a celebri-DnD show, Critical Role, the Mighty Nein, should "go on the road" and join a game in Joe Manganiello's basement, with as many of his regulars as possible. if not, i hereby request Ashley Burch as often as we can get her, plus Terry Crews was a delight.

I love when people blame her for killing Molly when she basically got one round in that fight. Yeah, she imposed disadvantage on herself, but she quite literally could not have done anything to stop that from going down.

Who would have thought that a show centered around a group of voice actors playing D&D would score a 9.5/10 on IMDB and be ranked amongst the Top 250 shows on IMDB. It's definitely a triumph for all of those involved, and a testament to their talent as performers

And now they’re a multi-media company producing the highest quality D&D content, comics and animated TV shows based around their characters and games, spin-off board games, and even their own TTRPG games. I think I’ve even heard rumors of a contract they signed with Amazon that includes another game adaptation like a movie or something. Absolutely BAFFLING

Oh I love these guys!!!! I caught the D&D bug long ago but could never play (wasn't allowed). Finally started playing 4e, then 5e. And watching these guys play just makes D&D so much more fun! Matt Mercer is an incredible DM! These guys have brought me to tears with laughter, to the edge of my seat in suspense. They have set the bar so high!

I had no clue these people have voiced these characters! I grew up with these people before I got interested in D&D and had no clue, especially that Ninja Turles, Ben 10, that was my childhood. Then the last of us, the avengers, and a bunch of stuff I don’t know. These guys are even more awesome to me now!

One of my favorite Animes of all Time is Ergo Proxy, and it has the voice talents of Liam O'Brian and Travis WIllingham, and the writing chops of Taliesin Jaffe

Would love to see some sort of D&D game where the cast each plays a character they've done in the past. Like Sam playing Donatello, Laura playing Jaina Proudmoore(or maybe Kid Trunks), Liam playing Gaara(or maybe Asura), Travis playing Mustang, Matt playing McCree, etc. Not sure how it'd work, but that sounds soooooo fun!

It’s so funny, people are so amazed by the casts range, but Mercer really doesn’t need to be mentioned...he’s just god. Perfectly bouncing between 3 or 4 voices in a scene sometimes, it’s not even believable even though I see it

Small error, the Margaret clip you used isn't Marisha, that's the OG voice actress Michelle Ann Dunphy. Marisha had to take her place in 2014 due to Michelle having a baby at the time of recording for persona q.
