To explain it to Mr Burely. The benefit for booing a player who is playing badly is strictly for the fans to vent their dissatisfaction. Think of it this way Mr Burely, we the fans pay to buy their clothing, buy products endorsed by the players, buy tickets to watch them at the stadium, pay money to watch them on streaming services, cable or whatever media we can find them and when they don't perform we are not happy.......so we boo them. In this day and age if you expect us to cheer them when they are good and cheer them when they are bad, then I would submit you are a bit on the naïve side. Yes, you are right most players don't plan on playing badly but when they do, booing is our way of expressing our unhappiness and also to hold them accountable. And we boo harder when we perceive they are not being held accountable and in Maguire's case, the perception or reality is he has not been held accountable for his poor play all of last season. He wasn't dropped very often from the club starting 11 and he still made the national team, not based on merit of his play for his club, but because his National Manager likes him and he plays well for his National team. We the fans don't get that at all....hence , we boo. Hopefully that explains it to Mr Burely.

@@andrewcameron1556 I think you're putting the cart before the horse there mate. It's not the fans responsibility to encourage the players to play well, that comes from their Manager and teammates. A player's obligation is to provide effort and good performances. A fans obligation is to watch and react, either positively or negatively. Fan approval or disapproval should have no bearing on players performances, that's something that comes from the players sense of pride and work effort. Players play and depending on how they perform, fans react. When home fans react negatively to one of their own, usually it's for a specific reason or reasons and normally it's because of bad performances. Ten Hag indicated that if Maguire plays well, his home fans will not boo him. It really is that simple. If Harry Maguire or any other United player require fans to support them when they don't perform well, they are suffering under a delusion. It may be a romantic idea but it's not reality.

Of course fans reactions have an impact on players. People's reactions have impact on people. Your family and friends reactions have an impact on you. But that's not what your original statement was implying. What you implied was that booing Maguire will not help him play better and my point is it's not a fans responsibility to make a player play better. That's up to the player, the Manager and his teammates but mostly up to the player. Players get booed all the time, that's part of the tradeoff for the money and the adulation they get. It's up to them how they react. Harry Maguire gets booed because his play was terrible. If he or you expect fans to show him encouragement for his terrible performance then I would submit that's an unrealistic expectation. Maguire should not need my nor your encouragement to play better. He's not playing in an under 10 league. As Ten Hag said, it's up to him and not anyone else. If fans boo Maguire and he doesn't play well then he's in the wrong line of work. Booing means you're not doing what we paid you to do.

Does he think that Maguire was trying last season when he jumped over the ball in the box against City, when he hit a lazy back pass to De Gea that was intercepted by Leicester, when he ran into midfield to tackle the Liverpool player allowing tons of space behind him for the opener, when he left Joax Felix open in the box for a header, etc?! I'm neutral on the booing, but I'm definitely not neutral when I saw a captain take no accountability or responsibility for his poor performances all season, in all competitions. Put a stone at magires position on the pitch and i bet the stone would do a better job than magire. A stone can atleast trip some players... Break up play by staying in the way, could actually hold a defense line, somebody could break their leg going against a stone.. aggressive enough. Just put a stone right outside the penalty box.... On a lucky day, a stone could even deflect 3 to 4 long range shots....

It’s not Southgate it’s the system. England protect him from doing any actual defending by protecting him in front and to both sides limiting Maguire to headed clearances from crosses. Maguire isn't the only player who played average last year, correct. Maguire is however someone who played at such a low level it was unfathomable how he played for United, in the PL, is Captain and highest paid defender. If he was an under radar player then it wouldn't even have been discussed any more than AWB or Shaw's poor performances.

Harry Maguire is the Defensive version of Dele Alli, there's a good player in there, we've seen it. But mentally they're both gone. The mental side of the modern game is a lot more important than most think. Can Ten Haag restore Harry Maguire? We'll see.

Uh no. He's never been good. People seem to think he won the league with Leicester but in reality he was getting relegated with hull. He looks semi competent at international level but so does Lindelof. International football is bog standard and so is maguire. If you actually watched football you could plainly see hes doesn't have a footballing brain, isn't athletic enough and is so technically limited. There's a documentary when pep is talking to his city team and he explicitly says - target maguire, he's the weak link. He puts more tackles in on his own players and if he didn't play for the refs favourite team, he'd have about 6 or 7 red cards. Stop watching fan channels and try watching football

Maguire was overpriced and over hyped and is no Van Dijk but he was a solid, strong defender, who's mentality got him to where he is. We saw it loads at Leicester. The guy will have to develop players from within because top class players don't want to play for him. They don't think he will succeed at United. De Jong doesn't think he will turn United around and doesn't want to kill his career by going to United. You can't blame him. Plus all of these players saw what happened to Ronaldo, they don't want to experience the same thing.
