Why is Fernando Sor called 'Beethoven of the Guitar'?

The music by Fernando Sor has been a pilar in the education of young guitarists and part of the concert repertoire for classical guitar, as well.
We often listen and read the Spanish composer being called the "Beethoven of the Guitar", designation that also titled Manuel Barrueco's album of Sor's music. But, for what reason?
In the make of this video I researched what could be the reasoning behind the question proposed, by looking into the context of the classical guitar in the 19th century and by analysing elements of the music by Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn (First Viennese School), along with resources employed by Fernando Sor.
What I found out turned out to be quite interesting and enlightening. You probably won't ever "see" the music by Fernando Sor the same way after watching this video. Enjoy!

What a beautiful video. Thanks Bruno, I was reviewing the Fantasy Op. 40 and I didn't feel completely comfortable, but the ideas you mention helped me a lot. One question: what are the books that appear at the beginning of the video? Thanks in advance

Thank you for your kind comment! The books are "Formas de Sonatas" by Charles Rosen (publicado en castellano por Mundimúsica), which has a chapter about the music by Beethoven and Schubert and "Estudios sobre Fernando Sor" (Luis Gásser).

Hello Bruno, thank you for your video, no doubt is very interesting, and informative. At the same time I would say that comparison often mistaken the point The dimension of Beethoven could be very difficult to be “comparable “ just the last quartets or pianos sonatas are a monument to human kind At the same time, I’m studying guitar, and I’m totally addicted and seduce by this instrument that in the wright hands is wonderful, and Fernando sor, carulli, carcassi They are wonderful and left a wonderful legacy, I’m studying carcassi and sor in this moment, and my day flows away Again, thank you for your video David

I think that "Sor is called the Beethoven of guitar" for his proximity(among them) in the time more that for your style, in fact, only Mozart is mentioned and imitated in his variations op 9 and others no guitaristics pieces. In his compositions he name to Cimarosa, S.Mayer, Paisiello, Aguado, Regondi, Coste and ¡Mozart! for more of four times of all Sor production. Mozart is the real inspiration of the Sor work definitely but "this saying" has remained in the popular culture. Thanks for your videos👍

I had NO idea, that our dear Sor was a pianist as well. He could make the guitar sound allmost symphonic - if the player had the technique for it.

Excelente vídeo! Yo diría que la música de Sor se inspira más en la de Mozart; también solo puedo comparar a Beethoven con …. el pintor Goya.
